Summary â It was just supposed to be a game. Once a month. No names. No questions. A few hours where she could surrender fullyâbecause everywhere else in her life, she was drowning.
But Oscar Piastri was all quiet power and brutal precision. He didnât ask who she was, and she didnât offer. Not her name. Not the harsh reality of her past. Definitely not the part about being Toto Wolffâs daughter.
But itâs not a game anymore. Itâs a secret with teeth. And when it all comes crashing down, she doesnât know if itâs her heart or his career thatâll break first.
Warnings â 18+ Content, BDSM themes, realistic and flawed characters, Dom!Oscar, Sub!OFC, slow burn, lots of smut (obviously), strong language, detailed drug-addiction/past-usage, suicidal thoughts/ideation, past-suicide attempts, vaguely mentioned past sexual assault.
Notes â Please heed the warnings and take care of yourselves xxx This one is a bit intense (a lot) at times, but it's going to make their happy ending so much sweeter.

feeling experimental? iâve been toying with this idea for a minute but if i ever write itâll be months from now so im leaving it here with you as a request. wag x wag readerâŠ.id suggest for the same team. alexandra x lewisâs girlfriend. i think this has potential to be really cute. their just hanging out, getting to know each other at the paddock, maybe lewis and charles see the chemistry and push to spend time together during the breaks when they have work to do. alex is still with charles, reader still with lewis, everyone still in love. i could see alex falling for a slightly older woman (late 20s, early 30s which is perfect for lewis) i think youâd really pull this off, xo

in a world of roaring engines and flashing cameras, yn hamilton was the calm in the chaos. a powerhouse in couture heels, she was more than just the paddockâs most fashionable face â she was a legend in the fashion industry. creative director. brand founder. icon. and wife to seven time world champion, lewis hamilton. at twenty-eight, she moved through life with purpose and poise, never once doubting the strength of her marriage or the freedom that came with it. lewis had always admired her curiosity â especially when it led her to art, risk, and occasionally⊠other women.

soft-spoken, effortlessly chic, and wildly intriguing â charles leclercâs girlfriend didnât just admire ynâs work⊠she wanted to know her. slowly, curiously, flirtatiously. it started with a compliment. then came fittings, late-night wine, shared laughter, and a closeness neither woman expected. no secrets. no drama. just an undeniable chemistry â encouraged by the men who knew them best. because love, when itâs secure, leaves room for more. and this? this was just the beginning.

The second my heels hit the paddock floor, the cameras start clicking â like theyâve been waiting for us. I donât flinch. I never do. I lift my chin, let my fingers rest a little looser in Lewisâs hand, and smile like Iâm floating. Because letâs be honest â this is where we shine. Lewis is walking beside me in full Ferrari red, the jacket half-zipped, his chain glinting in the sun. He looks like trouble. Good trouble. The kind you let ruin you.
I glance up at him and smirk. âRed really is your color.â
He leans in just enough to murmur, âYouâre my favorite accessory.â
Typical. Smooth. And still makes my stomach flip. We keep walking, cutting a clean line through the chaos â PR teams rushing by, engineers calling out telemetry updates, reporters already lining up like itâs feeding time. But it all fades a little when I spot a familiar face ahead.
âYN,â Charles calls out, his smile soft and warm as always.
He moves toward me, arms open, and I let go of Lewisâs hand just long enough to wrap him in a quick hug. He smells like expensive sunscreen and adrenaline.
âYou clean up well, Leclerc,â I tell him, pulling back and slipping my sunglasses up into my hair. âIâve missed this circus.â
âAnd weâve missed you,â he says. âThe paddockâs felt too quiet without your chaos.â
Iâm about to make a cheeky reply when I notice her.
Sheâs standing a few steps behind Charles, just slightly off to the side â sunglasses on, one hand curled loosely around a water bottle, the other tucked into her hip. Alexandra Saint Mleux. Soft, chic, and sharp as glass. Iâve seen her online. Obviously. But in person, sheâs something else entirely. She gives me a tentative smile â polite but curious â and when our eyes lock, something lingers.
âAh,â Charles says, stepping back like he just remembered, âAlex, this is YN.â
She steps forward and offers her hand. âItâs so great to finally meet you,â she says, voice warm but slightly shy. âIâve been following your work for years⊠and maybe fangirling a little.â
I take her hand, noting how delicate her fingers feel in mine. âIs that so?â I grin. âGuess weâre both off to an honest start.â
She laughs â soft and a little breathless â and it hits me thenâsheâs beautiful in that kind of slow burn way. The kind that sneaks up on you in quiet glances and warm coffee light. And her energy? It hums. I can feel it. Beside me, Lewis shifts, catching the moment like he always does. I donât even need to look at him to know heâs smiling. Heâs always encouraged my curiosity, always let me roam a little â and Iâve always found my way back to him.
Alexandra releases my hand, her eyes flicking to the custom Ferrari zip-up Iâve got tied around my waist. âYou make red look⊠dangerous.â
âGood,â I say, tilting my head. âThatâs exactly what I was going for.â
And just like that, I know this weekendâs going to be a little more interesting than I expected.
â
The paddock has started to thin out â media wrapped, debriefs underway, and most of the noise has retreated into garages and meeting rooms. I know Lewis and Charles are locked away in strategy talk, but Iâm not in a rush to leave. Especially not with Alexandra sitting across from me, one leg folded under her, a half-melted iced latte between her fingers, and the softest smirk tugging at the corner of her lips.
âI still canât believe Iâm here,â she says, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. âItâs surreal sometimes. All the noise, the cameras, the speed. Charles is so used to it â but Iâm still adjusting.â
I smile, leaning back in the plush seat, swirling the espresso in my glass. âIt took me a full season to stop flinching when the engines started during quali. Now itâs just⊠background music.â
She laughs â low, melodic, like it surprises even her. âYou make it look easy. I swear, everyone watches you walk in like youâre about to announce your latest takeover.â
âWell,â I tease, âthatâs because sometimes I am.â
Her eyes crinkle as she laughs again, and I feel something shift. Lighter, warmer.
Thereâs a pause, the comfortable kind. I sip my espresso. She tucks a foot tighter beneath her. Then she saysâ
âI work in visual art, mostly. I started with sculpture but Iâm branching into digital installations now. Light, sound, space. Itâs⊠more personal than I expected.â
I tilt my head, intrigued. âThatâs beautiful. Thereâs something incredibly intimate about building a world from your own hands.â
She nods slowly. âItâs vulnerable. But also freeing. You ever feel that way with design?â
âAll the time,â I admit, setting my glass down. âWhen I first started, I thought I had to be sharp all the time. Armor. Precision. Everything buttoned up and bulletproof. But over the years I realized⊠softness has power too. Sensuality. Emotion. Those things arenât weaknesses â theyâre everything.â
Alexandra watches me, her expression softer now. âThatâs⊠exactly how I feel about my work. That balance. Control and chaos.â
âMmm,â I hum, smiling at her. âDangerous combo.â
Her lips part just slightly at that, and I catch the tiniest flicker in her eyes â not overt, not too much, just⊠present. A quiet curiosity. The same kind I feel bubbling inside me.
She leans forward slightly, resting her elbow on the table. âDo you ever design for yourself? Like, really for you?â
âRarely,â I say honestly. âBut when I do, itâs usually silk. Barely there. Something soft enough to remind me I donât always have to be so composed.â
Alexandra smiles again, but this time itâs slow â like sheâs savoring the words. âIâd love to see that version of you.â
I arch a brow, the corner of my mouth tugging up. âWould you?â
âI think everyone sees your power,â she says, tone softer now. âBut I wonder what youâre like when itâs just⊠you.â
Sheâs not flirting, not exactly. But it lands the same way. I glance down at her fingers, still wrapped around the cup, her delicate bracelets glinting under the hospitality lights. Then I meet her gaze again, and I know she feels it too â that quiet buzz in the air. Not loud enough to change anything, but impossible to ignore.
âYouâd be surprised,â I murmur, âwhat Iâm like off the runway.â
Her smile lingers. We donât move. Donât say anything else for a long moment. Just sip and smile and sit in the quiet, steady warmth of something beginning.
â
The chaos of race day is always a different kind of buzz. Everyoneâs sharp around the edges. Press, PR, team managers. Thereâs an intensity that simmers just under the surface â controlled, but volatile. You can feel it in the air. Iâve done this for years now. I know the rhythm. I know where to stand, when to step back, and how to smile without saying a word. It's an art. Alexandra, though? Sheâs still learning. And I can see it â the way her shoulders rise just slightly when a camera flashes too close or how her eyes flit to Charles when the reporters start crowding.
Sheâs standing just outside the hospitality entrance, politely trying to answer a few questions while Charles disappears into a swarm of red polo shirts. Iâm just inside, watching through the glass with a coffee in one hand and a pit pass in the other. Itâs all going fine until one of the journalists leans in just a little too close, voice dipped in something far less professional than curiosity.
âYou and Charles seem very close. Do you worry about being a distraction to his focus this season? Some people are sayingââ
She doesnât even get to finish. Iâm already outside.
ââthatâs enough,â I say smoothly, sliding into place beside Alexandra like I was meant to be there all along. âIf youâre interested in his performance, ask about tire strategy. Otherwise, I suggest we redirect.â
The reporter blinks, clearly caught off guard. Alexandra turns to me, her relief subtle but present â a small exhale, the way her shoulder shifts slightly toward mine like sheâs grounding herself.
âHi,â I say softly to her, letting the corner of my mouth lift. âSorry Iâm late.â
âYouâre right on time,â she murmurs.
I loop an arm casually around her waist, guiding her away from the crowd like itâs second nature. The photographers still snap, but the press doesnât follow.
We settle on one of the cushioned benches tucked into a shaded corner of the Ferrari suite. From here, we can see the screen broadcasting the grid buildup. The hum of engines is faint but rising.
âThank you,â she says after a moment, tucking her hair behind her ear and looking over at me. âI didnât know what to say. I didnât want to say the wrong thing.â
âYou were doing fine,â I say gently. âBut people like that? They donât deserve the careful version of you. You donât owe them grace.â
She looks down, cheeks flushed. âIâm still figuring out where the line is.â
âYouâll find it,â I say, letting my knee bump lightly into hers. âAnd when you do, Iâll be right there to help you cross it.â
Her smile blooms slow, head tilted as she looks at me. âDo you always talk like youâre in a movie?â
âOnly when Iâm trying to impress someone.â
She bites her lip â not shy, not coy, but thoughtful. âIs it working?â
âI guess weâll find out,â I murmur, âif you sit here with me a little longer.â
She does. We stay like that â knees brushing, drinks half-finished on the table beside us â watching the grid shuffle into place on the screen. At one point, I feel her fingers graze mine. Not fully a touch, but close enough that it sends something warm up my arm.
âI didnât expect today to feel so intense,â she admits quietly.
âIt always is,â I say. âBut there are pockets of peace. You just have to find them.â
âLike this?â
I glance over, and sheâs looking at me â really looking. Her eyes soft but steady, like sheâs studying something she doesnât quite understand but wants to.
âExactly like this.â
Later, after the race, Charles finds me near the garage and thanks me quietly, a hand on my shoulder and a grateful nod. I just smile and wave him off. He doesnât need to say anything more. Because Alexandra and I? We already said plenty â in silence, in glances, in the way we leaned a little closer than necessary. And in the paddock â where everything is loud â that kind of quiet matters most.
â
several weeks later ; third person pov
The late afternoon sun spilled golden light across the private Ferrari hospitality terrace, warming the dark wood table where Charles and Lewis sat, drinks in hand, their race suits rolled down to their waists after FP2. The garage buzz had quieted for the moment, replaced by the distant hum of equipment being packed up and engineers discussing data. But their attention wasnât on lap times. Not really.
From their table, they had the perfect view of the garden space below â where Alexandra and YN were sprawled out on a velvet picnic blanket someone had clearly stolen from a sponsor suite, sipping iced tea like they had nothing better to do. YN was leaning on one hand, laughing at something Alex had just whispered, her sunglasses perched on her head and the hem of her white sundress brushing her thighs. Alex, in a baby blue cardigan and wide-leg trousers, was tucked into the blanket like she was posing for a soft-focus magazine spread â eyes only on YN.
âIs it just me,â Charles said, sipping his sparkling water, âor are they actually in love?â
Lewis chuckled, low and fond. âNot just you.â
They both watched as YN reached over and brushed a loose curl from Alexâs face without even thinking about it â gentle, intimate, utterly natural.
âTheyâve been like this for weeks now,â Charles mused. âEvery city. Every flight. I swear Alex texts her more than me.â
Lewis laughed again, resting back in his chair, clearly unbothered. âShe does the same with me. Sheâs always like, âAlex wants to try this restaurant,â or âAlex says we have to see this gallery.â I just nod and drive.â
Charles smiled, then leaned forward, lowering his voice slightly. âDoes it⊠bother you?â
Lewis glanced at him, eyes warm but serious. âNot even a little. YNâs always had this part of her â this need to explore and connect. Itâs never been about lack. Just⊠abundance.â
Charles let out a soft breath. âI feel the same. I think she brings something out in Alex I donât usually get to see. A little boldness. A little bite.â
They both went quiet for a moment, watching as YN offered Alex her lipstick to try. Alex didnât hesitate â just applied it messily and leaned in to ask if she got it right. YN laughed, tilting her chin and wiping the corner of Alexâs mouth with her thumb.
âI mean,â Lewis said finally, âlook at them. Theyâre clearly having the time of their lives.â
Charles nodded. âAnd we still get to love them.â
Lewis smiled. âBest deal Iâve ever made.â
They clinked glasses quietly, not needing to say anything more. Because in a world of fast laps and faster living, what they had â what all of them had â felt rare. Soft. Beautiful. And if their girlfriends found joy and electricity in each other along the way? Well. That only made the team stronger.

Milan looks like a painting tonight â all warm, golden haze and flickering lights, like someone smudged the skyline with their thumb and called it romantic. Thereâs live jazz floating up from a street below, a half-empty wine glass in my hand, and Alexandra pressed up against me on a bench like itâs our date and the boys across from us are just lucky to be invited. Weâre technically on a double date â me and Lewis, her and Charles â but somewhere between the appetizers and the second bottle of red, Alex and I gravitated toward the same side of the table, legs tangled beneath the linen like weâve done this a hundred times.
âIâm just saying,â I declare, swirling my wine and turning toward her, âif aliens landed tomorrow and asked to see the best example of human beauty, I would show them you. And then maybe, if they were polite, the Margiela archive.â
Alexandra laughs â full-bodied, genuine, hand covering her face like she doesnât know what to do with me. Sheâs flushed, eyes shining, and for a moment I canât tell if itâs the wine or the way I keep saying things that make her blush like that.
âYouâre unbelievable,â she says, shaking her head.
âIâm right,â I reply, and pluck an olive from the little silver dish between us. I hold it out to her, fingers loose and slow, and she leans in and bites it from me without breaking eye contact.
Beside me, I hear Lewis chuckle into his drink. âShe does this,â he mutters, mostly to Charles. âPulls people in. Makes them feel like art.â
Charles leans back in his chair and raises both brows. âShe put Alex in two mood boards,â he says, sounding half-impressed, half-baffled. âTwo. For brands.â
âIâm starting to think I should be worried,â he adds, laughing gently.
âYou should,â Alex says sweetly, reaching over to steal a fry off his plate without looking away from me.
Lewis raises his glass in salute. âTo being supportive, secure men who hold the camera and pay the bill.â
âAnd occasionally get to kiss our girlfriend and wife,â Charles adds, a bit more dryly. âIf weâre lucky.â
âExactly,â I grin, resting my chin on Alexâs shoulder. âYouâre both doing great.â
The waiter drops off another bottle of red, and we all murmur thanks, but I donât really notice. Alex is turning toward me now, her perfume soft and close, her smile lazy like sheâs half-drunk on the wine and the heat of the night.
âYou know,â she murmurs, âyou always say the most unhinged things with the calmest voice. Itâs kind of hypnotic.â
âThatâs just my brand,â I say. âUnhinged couture. Chaos in cashmere.â
She giggles and reaches out to fix a flyaway strand of hair behind my ear. Her fingers linger, her eyes flick down to my mouth â barely, for a second â and then she pulls away with a smile like a secret. Across the table, Lewis is watching us like heâs just been handed front-row seats to his favorite art film. Charles is doing that thing where heâs smiling like he doesnât know whether to be annoyed or in awe.
âI feel like a third wheel on my own date,â Charles finally says.
Lewis just shrugs. âItâs their world, mate. Weâre just lucky they let us sit at the table.â
Alex squeezes my hand under the table. I donât even flinch â just lace our fingers together and lean back into her side like itâs the most natural thing in the world. And maybe it is. Because between the candlelight and the chaos, the wine and the warmth, I realizeâŠThis doesnât need a label. It doesnât need definition. It just is. And for once, thatâs more than enough.
 âÂ
Thereâs something sacred about the studio at night. The lights are dimmed low â not off, just warm enough to cast shadows over the mannequins and fabric rolls stacked along the far wall. My laptop is still playing jazz from earlier, some old record that crackles now and then, like itâs breathing with us.Alexandra stands in the center of the room, barefoot on the muslin-stained floor, wrapped in nothing but a half-pinned dress and a halo of soft golden light. Sheâs quiet. Not shy â not anymore â just still in that thoughtful way she gets when sheâs letting herself be seen. Her arms are raised slightly as I crouch in front of her, adjusting the hem of the silk skirt with a handful of pins clenched between my teeth.
âThis might be my favorite one yet,â she says softly.
âBecause itâs sheer,â I mumble around the pins, glancing up at her. âDonât act like youâre not obsessed with scandal.â
She laughs â low, breathy, a little sleepy â and I feel it settle into my chest. I stand slowly, letting the pins drop onto the nearby table, then circle behind her, smoothing the open back of the gown until the fabric hugs her spine. Her skin is warm. Bare. I press the silk against the dip in her waist and feel her inhale, just slightly.
âYou know,â she murmurs, voice barely above a whisper, âI never used to feel beautiful in things like this.â
My hands still. âWhat changed?â
âYou,â she says simply. âYou see me differently.â
I donât say anything at first. Just let my fingers trail lightly over the fabric-covered seams, securing them with the faintest pressure â as if the gown and the moment might fall apart if I donât hold them just right. She turns slowly to face me, the movement fluid, delicate. Weâre close now â closer than we should be. Her eyes search mine, not nervous, but open in a way that feels dangerous. Like sheâs giving me permission to go wherever this thing between us wants to go.
âI donât think itâs the dress,â she says quietly. âI think itâs the way you look at me when I wear it.â
I laugh once, under my breath. âThatâs not fair.â
âWhy?â
âBecause Iâm trying to behave.â
A pause. Her eyes flick down to my mouth and then back up. Her voice is soft, but deliberate.
âDonât.â
Itâs not a challenge. Not a demand. Just an invitation. The air goes still. I lean in â just a breath. My fingers graze her hip, hers drift to the hem of my shirt. I can feel the space between us disappearing, feel her breath on my lips, and for a second I think yes, this is it. But thenâ A sharp knock on the studio door. We both freeze.
Another knock. âBabe?â Lewisâs voice, muffled but calm. âYou left your phone in the car.â
Alex exhales slowly, eyes still locked on mine.
âSaved by the bell,â she whispers.
I swallow, smiling despite the ache in my chest. âFor now.â
She grins â small, knowing â and turns her back to me again. I zip the dress up slowly, the silence between us heavier now, charged. And I know. Weâll cross that line eventually. But not tonight. Tonight, we return to safety. To silk and seams and what-ifs. But my hands remember.
And so do hers.
 âÂ
The afterparty is still going somewhere down the street, but we ditched it hours ago â too loud, too many cameras, too many eyes. Weâre in my hotel suite now, music low, heels kicked off, the scent of champagne and perfume lingering in the air like a memory. Alexandra is sitting beside me on the velvet sofa, knees folded beneath her, her laugh soft and unfiltered as I retell a chaotic story from fashion week â something about a model, a smoke machine, and an accidental fire alarm. Her hand is on my thigh. Barely. But itâs there. And mine is brushing her jaw now, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear like Iâve wanted to all night.
Sheâs looking at me like she knows â like we both do â that weâre moments away from slipping past the point of no return. Her lipstickâs a little smudged. Mine probably is too.
âThis feels like a bad idea,â I murmur.
Alex leans in, voice barely audible. âSo does letting it pass.â
I donât know who moves first. Maybe we both do. Thereâs no hesitation this time. No uncertain glances. Just my hand sliding along the back of her neck and her breath catching right beforeâBang.
The door swings open.
âYN?!â
We both practically jump apart like teenagers caught sneaking around in high school. Alex nearly falls off the couch. I sit bolt upright, heart in my throat. Ollie Bearman stands in the doorway, frozen like heâs just walked in on something illegal. His eyes are wide, cheeks flushed, one hand still gripping the doorknob.
âOh my godâ Iâ I didnâtâ I thought you were aloneâ Iâm sorryââ
âOllie!â I snap, standing so fast I nearly trip over the edge of the coffee table. âWhat the hell are you doing?!â
âI needed to talk!â he blurts, clearly flustered. âIâve been texting you for hoursâ I was freaking out about something with my engineer and I didnât know who else to go to and youâre likeâ youâre like my safe person, okay?!â
Alex is stifling a laugh behind her hand.
I pinch the bridge of my nose. âOllie, you barged into my hotel room.â
âI knocked!â he defends, still hovering awkwardly in the doorway. âNo one answered and the door was unlocked!â
Alex waves gently. âHi, Ollie.â
He gives her a pained look, like heâs just realized he might have interrupted history.
âIâm so sorry,â he mutters, already backing toward the door. âIâll come back later, or like⊠never.â
âNo,â I sigh, rubbing my temples. âCome in. What happened with your engineer?â
Ollie hesitates, then steps inside like a kicked puppy. âYouâre not mad?â
âIâm mostly just humiliated,â I say sweetly. âBut thatâs fine. Sit.â
As he collapses onto the armchair, burying his face in his hands, I glance at Alexandra, whoâs still curled on the couch â her cheeks pink, eyes bright with amusement.
Our knees brush again. She doesnât say a word. But she smiles at me like this isnât over. Not even close. And I know, as I reach for Ollieâs shoulder and switch into protective, slightly-maternal YN mode, that the next time we get that close? We wonât stop.
 âÂ
The city is sleeping. But we never do. Itâs just us tonight â Alexandra barefoot on the studio floor, wrapped in one of my old cashmere sweaters, watching as I pull out sketchbooks and folders, swatches and clippings that have lived on the edge of my brain for months now. My desk is a beautiful disaster. There are mood boards taped to the wall, loose sketches pinned beside Polaroids of her laughing on rooftops and sipping espresso in Milan, lips stained red. Thereâs fabric I only ordered because it matched the color of her eyes in golden hour. There are notes scribbled in the margins â Alex hair down, Alex with that silver eyeliner, Alex laughing in navy organza. Sheâs everywhere. In all of it.
âI didnât mean for it to happen this way,â I say, voice quiet as I flip open one of the sketchbooks. âBut it did. You just⊠started showing up in everything I touched.â
Alex doesnât say anything at first. Her fingers skim over a photo I printed of her â one I took when she wasnât looking, on the balcony in Monte Carlo. She was reading something, barefoot and frowning, her hair a little messy, her lips parted like she was about to say something.
âI thought you were just being flirty,â she murmurs. âI didnât realize Iâd become this.â
âYouâre not just the inspiration,â I say, looking up at her. âI want you to be the face. The heart. The voice.â
Her eyes meet mine.
âI want to create a full capsule collection with you,â I continue. âYour energy, your taste, your art, your voice â in every look, every piece, every campaign. Weâd design it together. Name it after you. Launch it your way.â
She exhales shakily. âYNâŠâ
âIâm not just obsessed with you,â I say, stepping closer. âI see you. And I want the whole damn world to.â
Her eyes flicker â somewhere between awe and disbelief. âYou want me to design with you?â
I nod. âI want the next collection to be you.â
For a beat, all I can hear is the slow spin of the fan and the crackle of jazz on vinyl. And then Alex steps forward and closes the distance between us like itâs always been hers to cross.
âOkay,â she whispers. âYes. Letâs do it.â
And before I can say anything else â before I can thank her or fall to my knees from sheer adrenaline â she kisses me. Soft. Unrushed. Warm.
Her hands slide up to my neck, mine tangle in her sweater, and we just stay there â in the middle of my wrecked studio, surrounded by piles of paper and chaos and beauty that all led to this.To her. To us. When we finally pull apart, her smile is dazed and brilliant.
âIs this the part where we ruin everything?â she teases, breathless.
I shake my head, forehead resting against hers.
âNo,â I whisper. âThis is the part where we make something beautiful.â

Alex is standing in front of a linen-draped wall thatâs catching the afternoon light just right, wearing one of my favorite pieces from the collection â a backless ivory slip dress with hand-beaded straps and a long satin ribbon tied at her waist. Iâm crouched by her feet, adjusting the fall of the hem and smoothing the fabric over her hips like itâs instinct. Because it is. I donât think Iâve stopped touching her all day â gently, professionally, reverently â and she doesnât seem to mind. If anything, she leans into it.
âAre you even real?â I murmur as I rise back up to standing, fingers trailing lightly over her side. âBecause I think you were custom made in a dream I had once in Milan.â
Alex laughs, soft and sun-drenched. âYou say that like you didnât design the dream.â
I smile and brushed my hand gently over her cheek, deliberately leaving my hand there for just a moment too long. The photographerâs still testing light, but I swear the cameraâs already catching all of this. Across the courtyard, Charles and Lewis are leaning against a stone wall, champagne in hand, watching us like theyâve just been handed front-row seats to a love story unfolding in real time.
âDo you think weâre even in the campaign?â Charles asks, nodding toward us.
Lewis smiles, all pride and affection. âI think weâre just lucky to be allowed on set.â
Alex tilts her head slightly and lowers her gaze, her expression suddenly serious. âYouâre staring.â
âAlways,â I whisper. âI never get tired of it.â
The stylist calls for the next setup â a shot with both of us seated on a velvet chaise, surrounded by florals. We step into frame together, and without thinking, I reach for her hand. She takes it like itâs second nature. Between takes, she rests her head on my shoulder. At one point, she pulls a flower from the bouquet beside us and tucks it into my braid, biting her lip to suppress a grin.
âYouâre the prettier one today,â she says softly.
âImpossible,â I murmur. âI designed the collection around you.â
Behind the camera, we can hear Lewis trying not to laugh.
âSheâs been down bad since day one,â he says to Charles, who raises a hand like heâs surrendering to the truth.
âItâs okay,â Charles says. âI get it. I fell in love with her too.â
âTheyâre going to break the internet, you know,â Lewis adds, completely unfazed. âAgain.â
Alex squeezes my hand gently. âDo you think people will see it?â
âSee what?â
She turns to me fully, her face open and glowing in the last of the golden light. âWhat we are. What weâre building. What this means.â
I lean in, brushing my nose against hers, just barely.
âTheyâll feel it,â I whisper. âEven if they donât know how to name it yet.â
The photographer calls for âone moreâ â like they havenât already taken two hundred shots. We both look at the camera, still holding hands.
And just before the flash, Alex leans in and kisses my cheek. Soft. Barely there. But enough. I donât have to look at Lewis or Charles to know theyâre both smiling. Like they knew it all along.
â
Itâs one of those mornings where the sky feels like a blessing â soft blue with just enough clouds to make everything cinematic. The rooftop is dripping in florals, white linen, glassware that sparkles when the light hits it, and artfully scattered prints from the collection hanging on strings between garden trellises.
Iâve barely taken three steps into the garden before Iâm enveloped in arms and kissed on the cheek.
âYou did it,â Lewis whispers, pulling me into him like Iâm something to hold onto. âYou really did it.â
His voice is thick with pride, and when I pull back to look at him, I catch the tiniest shimmer in his eyes. Heâs in a sleek tailored suit in a deep red tone that matches the lineâs signature palette. One hand rests protectively on the small of my back, the other brushing hair away from my face.
âYouâre going to make me cry,â I murmur, resting my forehead against his chest for a second.
âYou already made me cry when I saw the final mood board,â he says, smiling. âThis just feels like the part where I get to brag about you.â
Before I can reply, weâre interrupted by the sound of Charles laughing â warm, relaxed â as he spins Alexandra around gently by the hand just a few feet away. Theyâre standing by the hanging lookbook wall, Charles pointing out which sketch he thinks is inspired by him.
Alexandra looks ethereal in one of the dresses from the capsule â a soft silk halter with delicate embroidery, the hem floating just above her ankles. She rolls her eyes playfully at Charles and mouths, "Delusional."
âExcuse me, madame muse,â I say, walking over and offering her a champagne flute. âAre you flirting with my business partner or claiming intellectual property?â
Alex smirks, taking the glass and stepping into my space like she belongs there. âBoth. Multitasking.â
Charles sighs dramatically. âIâm surrounded by dangerous women and their matching visions. Iâve accepted my fate.â
Alex rests her head against my shoulder as we laugh, and I feel her fingers graze mineâjust for a moment, subtle and grounding. A little later, everyoneâs seated, brunch served on gold-rimmed plates, laughter buzzing like electricity beneath the calm hum of the rooftop.Someone taps their glass. Alexandra stands. Sheâs glowing. Hair swept up, champagne in hand, dress cinched perfectly at the waist â but itâs her eyes that stop me. Focused. Warm. Nervous, but certain.
âIâll make this short,â she says, already flushing. âIâm not a designer. I never thought Iâd ever do anything like this. And then I met someone who looked at me like I was art before I ever believed it myself.â
She glances at me. I feel everyone else disappear.
âYN taught me that fashion isnât just about what you wear. Itâs about how you take up space. How you speak without speaking. How you feel before youâre even touched.â
She swallows, smiling now, voice a little shakier.
âShe let me be soft and sharp at the same time. She put me in sketches and stitches and campaign shots like Iâd always belonged. And in the process⊠she made me believe I deserved to be seen. Not just as someoneâs girlfriend. But as myself.â
I blink fast. Lewis grabs my hand under the table.
âSo to YN,â Alex finishes, raising her glass. âMy collaborator. My muse. My friend. And the only person I trust to make me look good in silk at 8 a.m.â
Everyone cheers. I canât stop smiling. My throat is tight.
Later, when most people are distracted by dessert and conversations about pre-orders and press releases, I find Alex near the balcony, looking out at Paris like sheâs memorizing it.
âYou always know what to say,â I murmur as I approach her.
She shrugs gently. âI meant every word.â
âI know,â I whisper, brushing my hand along her lower back. âAnd for the record... you didnât just belong in this collection. You built it.â
She turns to me, a small smile tugging at her lips. âThink theyâll let us do a second one?â
âI think,â I say, âweâll be unstoppable.â
We donât kiss â not with all these eyes around. But our foreheads touch for a moment, and her fingers lace through mine in a way that says we will.
And I believe it. Because this isnât just a launch. Itâs the beginning. Of art. Of partnership. Of something more. And itâs ours.

Summary : While filming a âWhatâs In My Bag?â video for TUMI during a dreamy shoot in Lake Como, Lando Norris proudly shares his favorite travel items: headphones, cinnamon mints, lucky charms⊠and a stack of Polaroids of his girlfriend.
Until one very private photo slips into the mix, and suddenly the internet sees a whole lot more than he meant to show.
Genre : suggestive, fluff, oneshot
Pairing : Lando Norris x reader
Warning : mature content, allusion to nude and sex activities
Main Masterlist
Author notes : funny and soft oneshot to bring a little bit of joy after the race of Sunday. Everyone please stay safe and if you can, stay away from social media if it gets too hard after this week-end race, love you all <3
Lake Como glistened in the soft morning light, its surface scattered with diamonds of sun as gentle waves rolled against the dock. A light breeze rustled the cypress trees lining the waterâs edge, carrying with it the scent of pine and polished wood from the nearby villas. Birds chirped, water lapped, cameras clicked.
And somewhere on a private terrace above the lake, Lando Norris was trying not to sweat through his linen shirt.
âAlright, weâre rolling in three, two, one...â the cameramanâs voice faded into silence as the red light blinked on.
Lando sat back in the sleek director-style chair, a black TUMI backpack resting on his lap. He adjusted the strap, cleared his throat, and gave the camera his signature, cheeky grin.
âOkay. Letâs go.â
His voice echoed softly against the terracotta walls behind him.
âThis is my TUMI backpack. I take it everywhere, especially when Iâm traveling. Itâs kind of like my...survival kit,â he chuckled, unzipping the top compartment. âYouâll see what I mean.â
One by one, he began pulling items out, placing them carefully on the small table beside him.
âFirst up: my headphones,â he said, holding up a sleek black pair. âCanât live without these. Whether itâs music, Netflix on the plane, or zoning out in the paddock, these save me.â
He paused and smirked at the camera. âThey also help when Iâm pretending not to hear Oscar.â
The staff behind the camera chuckled.
âNext... passports. Plural. Yeah. I have three.â He fanned them out like a hand of cards, laughing. âIâm international, baby.â.â
He dug deeper into the backpack and pulled out a small, velvet pouch. Opening it carefully, he revealed several stone bracelets in warm earthy tones.
âMy mum got me these for Christmas,â he said quietly, his tone softening. âI donât always wear them on track days, but I keep them close. Just⊠makes me feel a bit more grounded.â
He placed them gently down and then brandished a small tin.
âCinnamon mints,â he declared proudly. âFor the sweet tooth. Helps with cravings. Or when you want to pretend you donât eat like a raccoon at midnight.â
More laughter. The atmosphere was warm, friendly. Lando was in his element, somewhere between boyish and bold.
âNow weâre getting to the fun stuff.â
He pulled out a tangled mess of keychains, one shaped like a tiny McLaren helmet, another a fluffy orange pom-pom, and the last: a piece of tissue with the initials LN sewn into it.
âA fan gave me this,â he said, holding it between his fingers. âIâve had it for years. Itâs falling apart but... canât travel without it.â
He smiled at the memory, then paused as his hand slipped into one of the deeper side pockets. His brow furrowed.
âOh... wait,â he muttered, pulling something halfway out before immediately stuffing it back in.
He looked up at the camera, suddenly sheepish.
âUhh...yeah. Some stuff I definitely canât show you,â he said, grinning and scratching the back of his neck. âLetâs just say... it's better to stay protectedâ
The staff broke into laughter. One of the camera guys let out a dramatic âooooohhh.â
âWhat?â Lando laughed, holding up his hands in mock innocence. âYou never know, okay? I like to get prepared.â
Still grinning, he reached again into the bag and pulled out a small, silver disposable camera.
âThis guy comes everywhere with me,â he said. âI take film photos when I travel. Stuff thatâs just for me, you know? Not for Instagram. Just memories.â
He held it up with affection, then reached in again and began pulling out little mementos: a handmade skull keyring from Mexico, a folded receipt with something scribbled on the back, a broken friendship bracelet.
âIâm kind of a hoarder,â he admitted. âThese are all... pieces of places. People. Moments. I like keeping them close.â
His hand brushed against something in the side pocket. A small, rubbery bottle.
He pulled it out before he registered what it was.
There was a beat.
He stared at the camera.
The bottle gleamed in the sunlight. Bright pink. Labelled clearly ' Lubricant: Strawberry flavor' .
âOh. My god.â
He blinked, went pale, then immediately turned red.
âI...okay, thatâs not, this is not...this wasnât meant to be in here.â
He stuffed it back into the pocket, eyes wide.
The cameraman wheezed behind the lens. A staffer covered her mouth.
âI swear this is not... I didnât pack this bag this morning!â Lando stammered. âOkay I did, but not, like, not with this interview in mind so I didn't know I had to show it.â
Lando groaned. âCan we cut that out? Please? Itâs for...dry skin.â
âOh wich part of your skin?â
He buried his face in his hands and trie to change the subject.
Still flustered, he grabbed one of his tech pouches and unzipped it, desperate to pivot.
âOh!â he beamed. âOkay. These are my favorites.â
From the padded pouch meant for a laptop, he pulled out a neat little stack of Polaroids tied with a red ribbon. He untied them quickly, holding the first one up to the camera.
âThis... is my girlfriend.â
The way he said it, like he couldnât believe his luck, was soft, sincere.
He flipped through the pictures with reverence.
âThis is her in Spain last summer. Look at this, she was trying to take a serious photo and I made a face behind her.â
He laughed.
âThis is us in Monaco. Donât ask how I convinced her to get in the pool. She hates cold water.â
Another.
âThis is her sleeping. And this... this is her at breakfast, in my hoodie.â
His smile melted into something private, like a quiet sunrise behind his eyes.
âAnd this...â
He held up the next Polaroid to the camera without looking at it first. There was a beat. A pause.
From behind the camera, someone made a choked noise.
Lando glanced up. âWhat?â Then looked at the picture.
âOh...oh, no. No, no, no...â
He yanked it back quickly, his ears flushing bright pink.
âShit, this isnât...this was not supposed to be in that pile.â
He stuffed it deep into the side of the bag, clutching the remaining Polaroids protectively.
âOh my god, please can you blur it,â he groaned, covering his face. âThatâs from the other pile. Like...the private-private collection.â
The entire crew burst into cackles.
âI swear to god if that makes the cut, Iâm a dead man. Sheâs going to kill me.â
âWas that a nude?â someone asked, not even trying to hide the glee.
âI am not answering that.â
âWas it?â the assistant pressed.
âI plead the fifth,â Lando said dramatically, still red-faced. âBlur it. Blur it, please. Iâm begging you. I have a career. I have a relationship.â
He tried to laugh it off, but his smile was flustered, eyes wide and nervous.
Eventually, he cleared his throat, trying to move on.
âAnyway. My phone. My wallet. You know. The boring stuff.â
But even as he listed the rest of his items, he kept glancing at the camera, haunted. Regretfully boyish. Still blushing.
âAlright. Thatâs whatâs in my bag,â he said quickly, snapping the backpack shut. âAnd apparently... a reason to get murdered by my girlfriend.â
He groaned again. âCan we cut that part? Please? I swear, sheâs gonna make me sleep on the balcony.â
The red light turned off.
The staff burst into applause.
âBest interview yet,â one of the directors laughed, clapping. âGonna break the internet.â

Lando
Oh no god I forgot about that
The paddock was already buzzing by the time Lando arrived, hoodie up over his head like he was trying to go incognito. Not that it helped, cameras turned as soon as he walked through the gates.
Media day.
He kept his head down, offering a few tight-lipped smiles to passing crew and journalists. He could feel the looks. The barely contained smirks. The PR team had already warned him to "expect commentary.â He hadnât realized commentary meant the entire motorsport world was now intimately familiar with the contents of his bag.
He reached the McLaren hospitality unit and headed straight for the driver lounge.
Oscar was already there.
He looked up from his phone the second Lando walked in, and the smile started immediately.
âMorning,â Oscar said, way too casual. âSleep well?â
Lando didnât answer. Just dropped into the chair across from him and stared at the ceiling.
Oscar waited half a beat.
Then: âSo⊠whatâs in your bag today?â
Lando groaned, eyes closing. âNo.â
âNo what?â Oscar asked, blinking innocently.
âIâm not doing this with you.â
Oscar nodded slowly, tapping his phone against the table. âRight. Of course. Strict media day focus. No time for lube talk.â
Lando didnât move but look at him shocked. âOscar!â
âYes?â
âI will actually fight you if you keep talkingâ
Oscar continued, unfazed. âIâve learned a lot about you this week.â
âPlease stop.â
âYour skincare routine. Your travel essentials.â
âItâs for my girlfriend,â Lando muttered.
Oscar nodded slowly. âRomantic.â
Lando looked at him. âI didnât mean to show half that stuff.â
Oscar took a long sip of his water bottle, then added, deadpan: âYou were really sweating.â
âI was panicking, Oscar.â
âYeah. I noticed.â
There was a pause.
Oscar looked back down at his phone.
âI just didnât know you were the type to carry⊠souvenirs.â
Lando threw his head back and groaned. âItâs private. Itâs supposed to stay private.â
Oscar raised an eyebrow. âYou handed it to a camera crew.â
âI didnât know it was that one.â
Oscar hummed. âRisky system.â
Lando covered his face. âIâm not coming out for media. Tell them Iâve combusted.â
Oscar leaned back again, shrugging. âMight be safer. Someone from Williams asked if youâre sponsored by Durex now.â
Lando didnât respond. He was too busy trying to crawl into his chair.
Oscar gave a tiny, satisfied nod.
Then, after a beat: âAt least the mints were normal.â
âThanks,â Lando said miserably. âReally comforting.â
Oscar took another sip from his water bottle, then looked back at Lando, who was still sulking in the chair across from him, hoodie half over his face.
After a moment, Oscar spoke again. Calm. Curious.
âOkay, but... I actually have a question now.â
Lando didnât move. âPlease donât.â
Oscar ignored him, tone completely deadpan. âWhatâs in the pile?â
Lando sat up slowly, blinking at him in horror. âWhat the hell, Oscar?â
Oscar stayed relaxed, perfectly composed. âYou said it yourself. There's the normal Polaroids. And then thereâs the private-private pile. So⊠whatâs in it?â
âI am not...â Lando pointed at him, absolutely done. â...having this conversation with you.â
Oscar raised a brow. âJust curious. For science.â
Lando stood up instantly. âIâm leaving.â
Oscar shrugged. âFair.â
Lando stormed toward the door, muttering something about changing teams, changing sports, maybe even changing names.
He was halfway out when,
âOi!â Oscar called after him. âDonât forget your backpack, Norris.â
Lando froze mid-step.
Oscar was already grinning.
âYou left it,â he added, far too casually. âYâknow⊠the one with your precious things in it.â
Lando turned around like a man walking back into a crime scene, snatched the bag off the chair with one hand, and glared.
âStop talking about it,â he muttered.
Oscar just smiled. âIâm not saying anything.â
âYou are thinking them.â
Oscar leaned back, unfazed. âIâm not.â
âYouâre being insufferable.â
Lando slung the bag over his shoulder and walked out without another word.
As the door shut behind him, Oscar shook his head slightly and let out a quiet laugh, just enough to himself, just loud enough for it to echo in Landoâs memory for years to come.
for all the worry still pressing under his ribs, for all the fear curling like smoke in his chest, there is this. the way your face softens in the lamplight, the warmth of your thigh pressed to his, the knowledge that even in all the mess, in all the makeshift years, you have always chosen each other.

Ever since he first got his license at 17, Isack has always driven the same way: one hand on the steering wheel, and the other holding yours.
Itâs a quiet claim to comfort, to presence. To the rhythm of your pulse beneath his thumb, tapping lightly with every turn along the A13, tracing miles like they mean something more than distance. Paris behind you, Dieppe ahead. The sky in soft, late-morning bloom.
Youâre humming something, feet up on the dash like always, your window cracked just enough to let the sea air leak in. Salt threads your hair, your voice. Isack doesnât ask what the song is. He likes not knowing. Likes that it belongs only to you, for now.
Youâre still wearing the locket.
The chain around your neck catches the light whenever the sun breaks through the clouds, and heâs grateful that you donât notice how often he looks. Grateful, too, that you still trust him enough to let him drive you anywhere at all.
He hasnât told you about Christian.
Not because he wants to keep it from you, not really. But because today isnât about that. Today is about soft things. The raspberry madeleines in the paper bag between your feet, your thumb tracing lazy circles into his palm, the way you look at him when you forget to be afraid.
And itâs your birthday. So Isack keeps the memory of Christianâs voice folded small and quiet, tucked somewhere between the glove compartment and the back of his mind. Keeps it from bruising the sunlight pouring in through the windshield.
You talk about the beach town the way you always have: like itâs somewhere sacred. Childhood memories spilling through the cracks in your voice. Sandcastles. Cherry popsicles. A seashell collection that once lived in a shoebox under your bed.
Isack listens. He always has. Even back then, before all this. Before fists became currency. Before bruises and broken ribs were just part of the cost. He listens, and he watches the way your face shifts in the sun. Lighter, looser. Like the weight you carry has momentarily settled somewhere he canât see.
âYouâre quiet,â you say, turning to look at him.
He squeezes your hand. âJust thinking.â
âAbout what?â
He swallows slowly. âHow good you look with the wind in your hair.â
You roll your eyes, but you smile. For a moment, thatâs enough. The road hums beneath the tires. The ocean waits at the edge of it all. And Isack, who has fought in every kind of cageâringed in blood and steel and silenceâfinds a different kind of fight here. A fight to keep this day intact. A fight to give you something that doesnât come from pain.
He brings your hand to his mouth and kisses your knuckles one by one. Softly. Reverently. Like a vow.
The car speeds on. The light deepens. And still, he holds your hand.
Normandy unfurls around you like something remembered. Cobblestones catching sunlight, shutters painted in faded blues and greens, laundry lines swaying between windows. The town smells like the sea. Brine and wind and the faint sweetness of bread cooling in some unseen kitchen.
Isack parks the car with the same precision he used to lace your sneakers before gym class, all those years ago. You unbuckle before he can circle around to open your door, but he does it anyway. Even leans in to steal a kiss on your cheek, while your face is angled just so.
âYouâre not a chauffeur,â you mumble, sliding out.
He catches your hand and doesnât let go. Lunch is a small restaurant just off the harbour. White tablecloths, chipped ceramic plates, windows fogged from the steam of the kitchen. You order the scallops. You always do. Pan-seared, with a little butter and a squeeze of lemon, no parsley.
âAnd sheâll ask to swap the greens for frites, sâil te plaĂźt,â Isack tells the waiter before you can open your mouth.
You stick your tongue out at him. He kicks you underneath the table. When the plates arrive, yours exactly the way you like it, you flick a fry at him. It bounces off his shoulder. He lets it happen.
The scallops are soft and sweet, practically melting against your tongue. He watches you take the first bite, that familiar furrow of concentration between your brows. You always eat the same way. âStop watching me,â you huff as you half-turn, trying to hide the way youâre slurping away at the Normandy specialty.Â
âJust checking youâre still real,â he shoots back through a mouthful of his own fries.
Itâs not the kind of thing heâd usually say aloud. But something in him is gentled todayâlike all the fight has melted into something quieter, more devotional. Maybe itâs the locket glinting against your collarbone, or the breeze lifting the hem of your skirt, or maybe itâs just this place, this moment.
You steal a scallop from his plate without asking. He reaches for your lemonade in retaliation. âYouâre going to hate that,â you warn before his lips can even touch the straw.Â
He grimaces. âI always do,â he says, taking a sip anyway.Â
For a long stretch, thereâs no need for talking. Just the clink of cutlery, the muted chatter of locals, the gulls crying out above the harbor like theyâre narrating something you donât need to understand.
Thereâs a stillness between you, anchored by everything youâve lived and everything youâre still trying to unlearn. Love thatâs worn in, scuffed at the edges, but no less precious. Affection that is so deep-rooted that it needs no words, that the silence is just as good as what is spoken.Â
Isack settles the bill before you can argue. âItâs your birthday,â he argues when you give him a scathing look.Â
âYou never let me pay,â you grumble. âIt might as well be my birthday every day.âÂ
He kisses your temple in apology, even though heâs not that sorry. Not when that sounds a bit like a daydream to him. Your birthday, every day. Beach trips and seaside restaurants and the glow you only ever get when you know a day is meant to be all about you. Arguably, all of Isackâs days are already about you.Â
You both step out into the brightness, hand in hand, salt on your tongues, ready for the beach. It appears like a breath held too long, one finally exhaled. Pebbles the colour of ash and dove feathers crunch underfoot, round and cold, spilling in soft rivers beneath your sandals as you break into a run.
Isack watches you from the edge of the promenade, his shoulder leaning against the railing, his other hand still nursing the faint ache blooming beneath his ribs. The bruises are hidden beneath his shirt, but they tug when he breathes too deep, when he laughs too hard. When he sees you like this.
You stop just short of the waterline, arms outstretched like you could hold the whole sea in your chest. A wave rushes in, touches your ankles, and you squeal with a joy so unguarded it makes something swell in him.
âYou coming?â you call out, turning toward him with a grin that rivals the sun.
He raises a hand in a lazy wave, the other still tucked beneath his ribs. âGo on ahead, sirĂšne. Iâll sunbathe.â
Your mouth twists in mock judgment. âOld man.â
âWounded man,â he corrects, watching as you wade further in, your dress hitched up around your thighs, your hair caught in the breeze like a ribbon.
He lowers himself to the rocks with a quiet groan, easing back onto his elbows. The pebbles press into his spine, grounding him. Salt clings to the air, crisp and clean, and gulls wheel overhead like scraps of song caught on the wind.
Youâre still out there, laughing to yourself as the tide flirts with your knees. He thinks of all the times heâs fought to keep you safe, to keep the world from touching you the way it touched him. But here, now, the sea is touching you gently. He lets it. He begs it to.Â
He watches the way your body moves in the light, not with performance, but with ease. Your happiness is a language he still doesnât fully speak, but heâs learning. And maybe thatâs the most honest thing about loveâthis constant relearning. The daily vow to witness. To soften.
You call out something he doesnât quite catch, and he cups a hand to his ear with a smirk. You respond by splashing water in his direction, not that it reaches him.
Still, he flinches dramatically.
Heâll join you soon. He will. Just not yet. For now, he wants to memorize this: you in the surf, alive with sunlight, the locket at your throat catching fire in the golden hour.
He closes his eyes for a moment. Lets the warmth settle into his skin. Lets your laughter become his favourite sound again. And when he opens them, youâre still there. Still laughing. Still his.
But like the waves to the shore, the morning comes back to him slowly. The sound of your laughter, somewhere just beyond the tide, dissolves into the crash of memory.
You had been singing in the shower, and Christian stood on the doorstep like a nightmare came to life. You havenât been answering my calls, Hadjar, heâd said, and Isack resisted the urge to slam the door.Â
âI thought we were clear,â Isack had said, voice low, firm. He hadnât even fully stepped out of the apartment, hadnât invited Christian in. No, men like Christian didnât deserve courtesy.Â
Christian scanned Isackâs face with military indifference. âYou lost to Pierre,â he said matter-of-factly.Â
Isack didnât move. âIâm out.â
âNo one gets to be out after a loss like that.â
âIâm not doing it anymore.â
Christian raised an eyebrow. âTell that to the men who bet on you. To the ones who own that cage.â
âI donât care,â Isack grit out, the words brittle.Â
âYou think theyâll just let you walk away,â Christian said slowly, deliberately, âbecause you bought a necklace and made a promise over birthday cake?â
Isack flinched. Just barely. But Christian saw it. Christian knew, had seen this all play out time and time again among his fighters.Â
âIâm done,â Isack repeated, quieter this time.
âThey are going to call it running. Weakness,â Christian threatened. Warned. âIf you donât settle the score, you donât just lose a fight. You lose your name. I am not talking about honor, Hadjar. I am talking about safety.â
From the bathroom, you had hummed some song your parents used to play on Friday nights. Christian cocked his head to one side, as if tuning in. Isack wanted to scream, wanted to insist that Christian had no right to perceive you in any way, shape, or form.Â
Never heard of again after Christian was done with them.Â
Isack hadnât said a thing. He only felt his stomach turn as Christian said, sickly sweet, âTell your girl happy birthday. Meilleurs vĆux.âÂ
Then Christian was gone. Isack shut the door behind him and locked it twice. When you emerged from the shower, skin glowing, hair dripping down your back, youâd asked, âWas that Charles?â
Isack had lied. Without blinking. âWrong address. Delivery guy.â
You smiled, soft and unsuspecting. Wrapped your arms around his middle. Heâd held you tighter than he needed to, breathed you in like it might be the last chance heâd get, and showered so long you accused him of stalling.Â
Now, on the beach, the sunlight should be too soft for memory. It stings anyway.
The sea wind carries your voice back to him in pieces. Little shouts of his name tossed between waves, laughter stitched into the salt-heavy air. Isack, Isack, Isack. Youâre up to your calves already, skirt soaked at the hem. The sky stretches pale above you; the ocean before you, vast and glittering.Â
Isack peels off his shirt slowly. Every motion is deliberate. He can feel the echo of Christianâs voice in his bones, but he forces it down. He looks to you instead, cataloguing the shape of you in sunlight. The tilt of your chin, the way you beckon without saying a word.
The pebbles bite at his feet as he walks down the shore. His ribs ache with each breath. His knuckles are still scabbed over, raw where they split. The salt will sting. He knows that. He steps in anyway.
The water hits him like a dare. Cold, bracing, cleansing. He hisses through his teeth but doesnât slow.
You turn at the sound of his approach. Grin wide, bright as a flame. âYouâll catch hypothermia.â
He shrugs. âAt least Iâll die pretty.â
You laugh, and it cuts through him, clean and good. You splash at him, water glittering midair. He flinches out of instinct, then lunges forward. âYou did not,â he gasps, dodging a second wave of your ambush.
âI absolutely did.â
And then you're running. Wading deeper, shrieking when the tide tugs at your knees. Isack chases you, slower than usual, half limping, half laughing. His body protests with every movement; he doesnât care. Not when youâre turning back to look at him with that expression heâd follow into fire.
The sea is up to your waists now. The water slaps at your thighs. He catches you by the waist and swings you around, even if his muscles groan at the movement. Itâs worth it, he thinks. Worth it when you squeal with laughter, worth it when you dip your head back and your hair tangles in the waves.Â
The kiss comes quiet, soft. Not urgent, but sure. You taste like lemons and salt. He cups the back of your neck with a trembling hand and tries not to think of blood. Of bruises. Of everything heâs still hiding from you.
You pull back, chest heaving. Press your forehead to his.
âĂa va?â you breathe into the scant space between you. Are you okay?Â
It has become so easy for him to lie. âOui,â says Isack, his fingers curling around the back of your skirt.Â
You study him for a moment, skeptical but unwilling to push. After a terse moment, you nod. âThen kiss me again.â
He does. Longer this time. The tide nudges at your legs, tugging you both toward shore. You stay rooted there, wrapped in each other, as if you could stall the day from passing.
For a heartbeat, maybe two, Isack believes this will be enough. That the ocean can wash it all away. That if he holds you tight enough, the lies wonât slip through.
But the salt stings. And the cuts donât close. Still, he kisses you like it might.Â
The last of the saltwater clings to your calves as you both walk up the shore, bare feet ghosting over smooth stone. The sun has started its slow descent, warm and low, gilding everything in a light that makes even the ordinary look gentle. Isack carries your shoes in one hand, your towel in the other. Your laughter still echoes faintly in the hush of tide and wind.
Youâve changed into dry clothes behind the crooked screen of beach grass and dune. He had turned his back to give you privacy, but not before stealing one last glance at the curve of your shoulder, the way your spine arched as you peeled your salt-damp clothes away. Now, youâre in one of his hoodies. Hood pulled up, sleeves too long, hands tucked somewhere in the soft cotton folds.
He tugs you close as you walk the length of the beach, an arm slung low around your waist, thumb brushing absent circles into your hip. Your head rests against his shoulder. You donât talk much. Thereâs no need to.
Until there is.
âYou have been weird today,â you say, gently.
His step falters, just for a moment.
âHave I?â
You nod. âNot weird-bad. Just⊠far away.â
He wants to deflect. Say something stupid, like: Maybe the sea took my brain. But youâre not laughing. Your gaze is clear, soft, certain.
âSo?â you press, voice quiet enough to be kind. He braces for the hit that he knows is coming; it still knocks him off his feet. âWas it really a delivery guy this morning, mon cĆur?â
He stops walking.
The sea hushes behind you.
Your eyes search his, and he feels like every truth heâs swallowed is trying to claw its way back up his throat. He opens his mouth, then closes it. He canât say Christianâs name. Not here. Not with the setting sun painting your cheeks golden and your hand tucked into the edge of his hoodie.
So instead, he panics.
Isack blurts out, âMarry me.â
He stumbles as he says it. Not out of clumsiness, but out of something heavier. Something tangled up in fear and hope and the desperate thrum of his heart. Your expression has crumpled into one of shock, and it spurs him on. Maybe he can pull this off.Â
He tries to kneel, to make it look right, the way itâs meant to in movies or in the stories you used to tell each other when you were teenagers with nothing but dreams and borrowed time. But his balance slips in the sand, graceless and human. He ends up on both knees instead of one, palms planted in the grit like heâs bracing for impact.Â
The sun is behind you, haloing your hair in gold. His chest is tight, ribs too small for the surge of everything inside. Your mouth parts, brows drawn in a mix of disbelief and exasperated affection. Like you canât decide whether to kiss him or strangle him.
âIsack,â you say, voice low.
He looks up at you. His voice is uneven, breath catching around the words like theyâre too big for his throat. âIâm serious. Marry me. I know this isnâtâI know it doesnât make sense right now, but maybe that doesnât matter. Maybe itâs just supposed to be you and me. Toujours. Always.â
You exhale slowly. Your eyes soften, but your stance remains firm, like youâre holding something steady for the both of you. âGet it together,â you mutter, crouching down in front of him, knees digging into the sand. You rest your hands on his shoulders, grounding him. âI love you, but you look like youâre about to throw up.â
A huff of laughter escapes him, breathless and half-sick with nerves. âI feel like I might.â
You press your forehead to his, close now, the salt wind curling around the edges of your hoodie. He can feel your breath, warm and steady, and something in him begins to calm. âI want to marry you,â you whisper, barely more than air. âOf course I do.âÂ
He closes his eyes. Tries to breathe through the knot in his chest. God, he doesnât even have a ring.Â
And then, you say, âBut not like this.âÂ
âNot out of fear,â you continue, brushing his hair back from his face. âNot because you think it will fix something. Not because youâre scared Iâll leave.âÂ
His throat aches. His tongue feels useless in his mouth. Thereâs too much he wants to say, too many words crowding his lungs, and not one of them feels like enough. Youâre right, of course. You deserve more than a panicked proposal, more than an ask made because itâs supposed to be easier.Â
You lean in and kiss the corner of his mouthâsoft, sure, the way you always are when heâs unraveling. He could cry from the gentleness of it. âAsk me again,â you murmur. âWhen itâs just us. When the world is not bleeding into it. Ask me when youâre not trying to cover up some truth, mon amour.âÂ
He nods. Once. Shaky. Every part of him trembling with relief and something more tender still. You pull him into your arms, both of you still crouched in the sand, tangled in the golden hush of the dying day. He buries his face into your shoulder, breathes you in like heâs memorizing this moment, holding it against the dark.
âI know,â you sigh. Patient as a saint, lovesick as a fool. âI know you are.â
He barely waits until youâve rinsed the salt from your hair before he says it, voice casual but eyes too bright, too fast.
âWe should stay the night. Just one,â he says, waving his phone at you. âI mean, it is your birthday. Would be a shame to rush back when the oceanâs right there.â
Youâre sitting on a bench by the mouth of the beach, towel wrapped around your shoulders, the last warmth of the sun clinging to your skin. He watches the way your lips part like youâre about to protest, and so he keeps going, overcompensating.
âI booked something. Just now.â He sounds casual about it. As if he hadnât spent his last couple of spare euros on this impulsive decision. âIt was a good deal. Cozy. Sea viewâsort of. Itâs called La ChaumiĂšre. Sounds cute, no?â
Your brows rise. âYou booked a room without asking me?â
He shrugs, trying for a grin. âConsider it a birthday surprise. Come on, mon amour. You know you want to sleep in tomorrow.â
You study him for a beat too long, towel pulled tighter around you like armor. The way you look at him, itâs not angry. Itâs tired, knowing. Like youâve already read the footnotes of this story and are waiting for him to catch up.
But you nod, slow. Giving up. Giving in. âFine. One night,â you say wryly. âBut youâre carrying the bags.â
He would have done it even without you asking.Â
La ChaumiĂšre is everything the name suggests: small, endearing, a little worn in the corners. The walls are painted a pale sunflower yellow, and the bedding is mismatched but clean. Thereâs a rusted iron bed frame and a chipped vanity by the window, lace curtains moving faintly with the breeze.
Isack throws your bag down and spins in a slow circle like heâs unveiling a palace. âLook at this. Rustic charm. Character,â he declares. âIt is giving... Jane Austen by the sea.â
âItâs giving bedbugs,â you grumble as you inspect a loose floorboard.Â
But youâre smiling, mouth twitching despite yourself. And thatâs what he wantsâneeds. That flicker of light, that tiny break in the heaviness. He sits on the bed, patting the mattress beside him. âCome on,â he coaxes. âLie down before I recite poetry about you and the seagulls.â
âYou donât know any poetry.â
âThatâs not true. I remember one.â Isack clears his throat, the beginnings of a wide grin already pulling at his chapped lips. âRoses are red, violets are blue, you have cold feet, and theyâre touching myââ
You toss a pillow at him, and he lets it hit despite how easily he could have caught it. He lets the moment stretch and shimmer, just long enough for the laughter to stay in the air. For the truth to stay just out of reach, muffled under cotton sheets and sea breeze.
He watches you as you unpack the small things. A hairbrush, a bottle of lotion, your phone charger. He wonders how long he can hold onto this. This borrowed quiet. This soft reprieve.
Maybe, he thinks, as you toss your towel aside and curl up beside him, head finding its place on his shoulder. Maybe if he tries hard enough, keeps you smiling long enough, you wonât ask again tonight. Maybe youâll believe him for one more hour.
He kisses the top of your head and breathes in.
âHappy birthday, ma belle,â he whispers. More to himself than anything.Â
The first birthday he ever spent with you, you were nine and insisted on making your own cake. A disaster of flour and orange soda, baked in your motherâs oven until the top was blistered and the bottom still raw. He ate two slices anyway, cheeks round with sweetness and something gentler, even then, even so young. He remembers how proud you were of it, the way youâd stuck toothpicks in to hold the layers, declaring it a structural chef-dâĆuvre.
You turned thirteen in a train station, stuck on your way back from a school trip. Heâd waited for you on the wrong platform, holding a single slice of cheesecake in a plastic box. You were tired and sunburnt and you cried when you saw him. He didnât know what to do, so he sat next to you and passed you his hoodie and the slice, and told you heâd eat your pickles forever if it meant you wouldnât look so sad.
He turned fifteen on a school night. You gave him a mixtape and a pencil with his name carved into it. You watched him unwrap it like it was something sacred. Youâd shyly whispered, âYou said you always lose yours,â and heâd looked at you like youâd built him a cathedral. Like he might find religion between track three and the eraser of the Faber-Castell pencil.Â
Your seventeen was a blur of city lights and stolen gin, your hair pinned up with a ballpoint pen, dancing in a too-small kitchen with your shoes off and your heart wide open. He still sees you like that sometimes when he closes his eyes: all light and laughter, tipsy on joy and reckless affection. He still remembers what it was like to kiss you and taste the champagne on your tongue, to say the word love and instead hear the cadence of your name.Â
There was the birthday when you got sick and he stayed in bed with you all day, spoon-feeding you soup he could barely afford, reading aloud from your battered copy of Camus until your fever broke. Another when he surprised you with a trip to Lyon and you missed the train, so the two of you spent the night in the station curled up on your backpacks, laughing so hard you cried.
And now here you are.
The hotel room is narrow and smells faintly of lemon disinfectant and salt. The curtains are thin and dated, the kind of print that looks older than the room itself. Thereâs one lamp with a flickering bulb, and the radiator ticks in the corner like an old watch.
Heâs trying. God, heâs trying.
You sit cross-legged on the carpet, a plastic bag of convenience store food between you: two microwaved croque monsieurs, a sleeve of butter cookies, a bottle of lemon soda because the wine was too expensive. âItâs haute cuisine,â he boasts, peeling the plastic off the sandwich. âTrust me. Three Michelin stars.â
You bite into your half with feigned enthusiasm. âMm,â you hum, the same way a food critic might. âComplex notes of rubber and despair.â
âExactly. Thatâs the despair reduction aged in plastic wrap.â
You laugh. Itâs small and worn, but itâs real. He pockets that sound, hides it somewhere safe inside himself.
You lean your head on his shoulder. âYou didnât have to do all this.â
âI wanted to,â he says without missing a beat.Â
And itâs true. For all the worry still pressing under his ribs, for all the fear curling like smoke in his chest, there is this. The way your face softens in the lamplight, the warmth of your thigh pressed to his, the knowledge that even in all the mess, in all the makeshift years, you have always chosen each other.
âThis one is going to be another story we tell our seven kids,â he says after a moment, gesturing to the room. âThe great lemon soda birthday of Dieppe.â
âItâs not so bad,â you say, nose scrunching, âand we will not be having seven kids. Just twoâ
He watches you fight back your giddiness. Tries to believe you when you say itâs not bad, that thereâs still a life on the horizon.
Later that evening, the two of you lie in the dark like children afraid to waste it. The last few hours of your birthday stretch thin and sweet between you, like the bottom of a jar scraped for honey. The room is dim, still, save for the hum of the radiator and the hush of your breaths syncing into something slow.
He watches your eyelashes flutter against your cheek. Every time you blink, itâs like the night moves forward an inch. He doesnât want it to. Not yet. Not while he still has you like this, cradled in the quiet.
âAre you falling asleep on me?â he whispers, squinting playfully to check.
You exhale a soft laugh. âNo. You are.â
âAm not.â
âAre too.â
He turns toward you, barely a shift, just enough to press his nose to your temple. âWe should both stay awake. Just a little longer.â
You hum. It vibrates against his chest where your palm rests. âBecause the clock stops if we do?â
âOui,â he says, half-myth, half-truth.
It starts slow like everything with you does. A shift of your leg between his. Fingers curling under his shirt. His hand brushing the hem of yours. The soft, wordless pull toward each other. The way your mouth finds his without thinking, like it belongs there, like it always has.
Your skin is warm and familiar. He knows every inch of it by now, but it never stops feeling new. Your kiss is slow, languid with sleep and something heavier beneath. His hands find your waist, the curve of your back, the slope of your neck.
He thinks of the first time.
In his childhood bed, the ceiling painted stars above you. Youâd lit a candle, even though you werenât supposed to, and the wax had dripped onto the floor. Youâd both laughed, nervous and breathless, fumbling and shy and so very careful. Youâd kissed him like you were telling him a secret that wasnât yours.
He kisses you now the same way. Still reverent. Still undone.
Your body shifts beneath him, your thighs parting. He groans softly, pressing his forehead to yours. âYou okay?â
You nod, tugging him down. âYes,â you breathe. âCome here.âÂ
His fingers fumble with the edge of your underwear, breath hitching. His wounds sting with the stretch of movement, but he doesnât care. Heâd do anything to stay in this moment.
Then you pause.
It happens so fast. One second youâre pulling him closer, the next, your palms are pressing lightly against his chest. You break the kiss. Your breath is shaky.
âI donât think I can,â you whisper against his mouth.
He stills. Every part of him taut with confusion and sudden cold. You bite your lip, eyes glassy in the dark. âNot until we talk about it. About whatâs happening,â you manage. âAbout what youâre not telling me.â
The guilt swells again, hot and sharp. He nods slowly. His hands fall away. He knows youâre right, that you deserve this, but that doesnât stop the loss from curdling in his stomach.Â
âAlright,â he says, voice rough. âTrĂšs bien.âÂ
You shift, tug your shirt back down, and he does the same. The silence is thicker now, but not angry. Just waiting.
He lies back down beside you, careful not to touch you without permission. He stares at the ceiling like he did all those years ago, wishing he still believed in stars. You reach for his hand anyway. Thread your fingers through his. He holds on, even if it hurts.
You donât say anything. You just wait. The seconds swell around him, slow and loud. He listens to them tick by on the wall clock, a tinny little thing above the bed, hands stuttering toward midnight like itâs afraid to get there.
Youâre still turned toward him, knees drawn up under the blanket. He can feel your gaze on the side of his face, the weight of it soft and certain. You know heâs scared. Of course you do. You always have.
But still, you wait. You let him be the one to say it.
He canât look at you. Not yet. Instead, he watches the second hand. Thirty seconds to midnight. Then twenty.
He lifts your hand to his mouth. Kisses your knuckles one by one. At least three seconds each, spent on the smooth skin he bruises over. âIt will be a new day,â he says into the curve of your pinky. âIt wonât be your birthday anymore.â
Your eyes search his. You donât smile, but you nod. And when he kisses you, properly, it tastes like grief and gratitude and something raw in between.
âI want you to remember this birthday as a good one,â he murmurs, lips still against yours, âplease.â
You touch his face. Your thumb brushes his cheekbone, tender as prayer. âOkay,â you say. Your voice cracks like sea glass. âDâaccord.âÂ
He keeps his palm on your cheek. Lets his thumb drift over the bow of your mouth, the place he always returns to. He takes a breath, checks to be sure. 12:01AM.Â
He tells you everything.
About Christian. About the knock on the door, your voice muffled from the shower, the way heâd stood frozen in the foyer like a kid caught stealing.
About the last fight. The score he didnât settle. The unspoken threat that laced Christianâs every word.
About fear. Not of getting hurt again, but of you getting hurt because of him. Because he didnât finish what he started.
He says it all. Slowly. Plainly. Voice low like a confession, like a wound opening. You listen. You let the silence hold the weight of it.
When he finishes, your eyes are wet. But you donât look away. Instead, you lean in and kiss him again. There is no desperation, no anger. There is only forgiveness. Mercy. Love.Â
In that moment, he thinks maybe he can still find a way through. If youâre still here, maybe thereâs still a path forward, even if he canât see it yet.
Isack kisses you back like it might light the way.
He wakes to cold sheets.
Not the kind of cold that means youâve slipped out just a minute ago to wash your face or stretch by the window, but the kind that sinks in. The kind that means gone.
Isack bolts upright. His heart goes lopsided in his chest, tripping over itself. The light in the room is milk-grey, early morning pouring in through the thin curtains. For a split second, he thinks maybe youâre in the bathroom, that heâll hear the sink running, your voice humming something off-key. But thereâs only silence.
He calls your name once. It comes out hoarse.
He calls for you again, louder this time, as he throws off the covers. âMon amour?â The bathroom door is open, empty. The floor is cool under his bare feet as he stumbles towards it. Dread blooms in his ribs.
Panic is a strange thing. It doesnât hit all at once. It creeps. It curls. It climbs up his spine like ice. He pulls open the closet, the wardrobe, even the tiny drawer in the nightstand. Your shoes are gone. Your bag too.
He rips through the room like a man underwater.
The bed, the bathroom again, the hallway outside. He presses his forehead against the wall, trying not to hyperventilate, trying to think. Would they have come here? Could they have followed? Could Christianâ
The door clicks open.
He spins around just in time to see you step in, paper bag in hand, hair damp from the sea breeze. Thereâs a bottle of orange juice under your arm and a croissant clenched between your teeth. âHi,â you greet, voice muffled around the blasted pastry.Â
Isackâs mouth opens but nothing good comes out. âWhere the hell did you go?â he snaps, voice louder than he meant it to be.
The paper bag crinkles in your hand. You raise an eyebrow, expression soft with surprise, not hurt. Somehow, that makes it worse. âI was getting breakfast.â
He runs a hand through his hair, hard enough to pull. âI thoughtâputain. I didnât know. I woke up and you were justââ
You set the bag down. Walk toward him. âHey. I left a note.â
He hadnât seen it. The one on the bedside table, with your scrawl and your poor attempt at leaving a lipstick mark. Je reviens tout de suite. Be right back.Â
Youâre in his arms before he realizes he moved. He wraps himself around you like something desperate, clutching at your back, your shoulders, the crown of your head. âIâm sorry,â he mutters into your hair. âI didnât mean to yell.â
âI know.â You press your cheek against his chest. âI didnât mean to scare you.â
He pulls back just enough to see your face. Youâre peering up at him like this is something new. Something strange. In some ways, it isnât new. Isack has always worried, has always fretted over you. Never to this point, though. To the point of wild eyes and short breaths.Â
âItâs that bad,â you say quietly. It isnât a question.
He hesitates, then nods. Once.
Your fingers slide up to cup his jaw. âOkay.â
He doesnât know what he expected. Anger. Accusation. Maybe fear. Instead, youâve gone back to looking at him like you always haveâlike heâs still the boy you chose to love, not the man who brought danger to your door.
Even if he doesnât deserve it, he leans into your touch.
âLetâs eat,â you say into his shoulder. âWhile itâs still warm.â
He lets you guide him toward the floor, where the sun has begun to inch across the carpet. You unpack the bag, tearing open the plastic with clumsy fingers. He watches you move. He watches you breathe. Youâre here.Â
He still has time. He still has you.Â
Thatâs why the road home is extra long.
Isack drives below the speed limit. By ten, the sun has started to peek out, soft and watery through the windshield. The light feels older than that, like itâs been here forever. Charlesâ car hums low beneath you, tires kissing the asphalt in lazy stretches.Â
You donât question his pace. You sit with one foot tucked under you, looking out the window, fingers laced in your lap like a hymn.
He sneaks glances at you at the red lights. Your profile in the daylight, chin tilted just slightly, that little freckle on your neck half-hidden by your hair. You donât say much. Neither does he. Thereâs music, low. A playlist he made years ago, still miraculously apt on the aux. It skips every now and then, but it always settles.
Somewhere just past the halfway mark to Paris, he gruffly says, âI've been thinking.â
You let out a low chuckle. âUh-oh.âÂ
He almost smiles. âI was thinking maybe... maybe you should stay with your parents for a bit. Just until I figure things out,â he says, already preparing for the fire the words will inevitably light.Â
You turn your head slowly, the way you always do when youâre trying not to raise your voice. âIsack,â you say flatly, an dso he rushes on.Â
âJust for a few days.â His fingers flex at the wheel. He keeps his gaze ahead. âIâll call Christian. Iâll make it clean. I just... I need to know youâre safe.â
You shift in your seat, pull your leg down, your voice going tight. âSo you want to make decisions for me now?â
âNo, I justââ
âBecause it feels like you are trying to disappear me before something happens. Like I canât handle it. Like Iâm some porcelain doll you can wrap in bubble wrap and ship off.â
He grips the wheel tighter, jaw ticking. âYou are putting words in my mouth, mon amour,â he grits out. (No matter the argument, you will always be mon amour to him.)Â
âThen what did you mean?â you shoot back, skeptical. âBecause it doesnât feel like love when you are pushing me away for my own good.â
âIt is because of love,â he interjects. âItâs because I love you.â
The city looms closer in the distance. The skyline smudges with sun. You both open your mouths to retortâclaws out, teeth sharp.Â
Then the impact comes.
A sharp jolt. A metallic crunch.
The car lurches forward slightly, jerking both of you in your seats. Isackâs foot slams on the brakes, heart in his throat; one of his arms flies out to keep you from jolting forward too much, even though your seatbelt does its job.Â
âMerde,â he mutters, breath shallow.
You turn in your seat, eyes wide. âWhat was that?â
He already knows. Heâs felt it before. Fender.
You pull to the side of the road. The driver behind you slows too. Isackâs mind flashes to Charles, to the neighbor who had lent you the car like it was no big deal, with a wink and a clap on the back. Merde, merde, merde.Â
He unbuckles quickly, twists in his seat to face you. His eyes rake over you to check for anything he might have missed. âAre you okay?â
You nod, hand on your chest. âYeah. Just startled.â
He lingers, fingers brushing over your wrist like he needs proof. Then he exhales, jaw tight.
âStay here,â he says, already reaching for the door.
He climbs out into the sharp light, ready to face the driver, the damage, the next small disaster. Paris is still a couple of miles away. Thereâs nothing but road here.Â
The other car idles a few paces behind, black as pitch, windows too tinted for daylight. Isack squints into the sun and takes a step forward, scanning for the driver. âBonjour,â he calls out, already doing the math in his head.Â
Then the door opens.
And out steps Death himself.
Helmut.
The name, the face, the myth made flesh. He walks like a shadow cast in hard angles, dressed in a long, bone-grey coat that looks somehow too clean for this street. He carries a cane, though he doesnât seem to need it. Behind him, two younger men unfold from the car like loyal dogs. Isack recognizes them instantly: Arvid and Nikola. Fresh blood. He hasnât met them in the ring yet, but heâs heard enough.
Panic, the strange thing that it is, coils in his chest. It sends sparks down his fingertips. Not a random fender bender. God, when was it ever?Â
Helmut smiles without warmth. âBonjour, Isa-ack,â the man croaks. âBack to Paris so soon?âÂ
Isack resists the urge to take a step back. âHowâŠ?â he tries to say. The words fall flat. The sentiment does not.Â
Helmut chuckles. It grates on the fucking ears. âYou know how,â he answers, plain and simple.Â
The right-hand man. Christian.Â
Isack feels the edge of retreat press up behind him. He considers itâjust bolting, grabbing your hand, disappearing. Heâs always been a decent runner. He could carry you on his back, even.Â
But then he hears the passenger door open behind him. Your voice floats out, sweet and lilting in the stifled air. âMon amour? Everything okay?â
Too late.
Helmutâs head snaps toward the sound. His smile bares his teeth.
âOh my,â he says. âWho is this?â
It all happens so fast. Helmut nods once. Arvid moves. Quick as a whip, stepping toward you with a hand outstretched like he means to keep you back. You jerk in surprise. âHeyââ
Isack moves without thinking. The gravel scrapes under his shoes as he lunges toward Arvid. âNâose pasâ!â Donât you dare. Â
Nikola intercepts, grabbing Isack by the shoulder and slamming him into the side of the car. For a moment, thereâs nothing but fists, adrenaline, pain. Isack is single-minded in his focus. His instincts kick in the same time that the fear does.Â
Isack swings wild. Lands one. Nikola staggers backward, howling. Clutching his nose.Â
Youâre trying to pull away from Arvid, kicking at his shin. âLet me go!â you screech.Â
The sound of you struggling cuts through Isack more than the blows. He pushes off the car with a grunt, stumbles forward again. Heâs aiming for Arvid now, reckless and stupid and wholly yours.
Then everything goes white.
A crack.
Helmutâs cane connects with Isackâs skull.
Isack drops to the ground.Â
The pavement is cold against his back. Helmut steps forward, boot pressing down hard on Isackâs chest. âStill got some fight in you,â Helmut rasps, almost fond. âCâest bien. You will need that.â
Isack tries to move, but the world tilts sideways. He manages to glance up at you through the haze of pain clouding his vision, through the blood thatâs beginning to flood metal in his mouth.Â
Look away, he wants to tell you. Donât look.Â
He doubts youâll listen. Youâre still flailing in Arvidâs iron grip, spewing profanities despite the fact youâre already sobbing openly. That hurts Isackâthe fact that youâre crying. But he feels a tinge of pride, too. Because youâre the real fighter, not him.Â
Isack wishes he could find his voice, wishes he could say out loud how brave and beautiful he finds you. How itâs a truth heâs held close to his heart ever since he was 17, ever since he was 12, ever since he saw you on that playground where you refused to bow to the bullies.Â
His brave, beautiful girl.Â
Helmut swings again.Â
Your voice splinters into a scream as Deathâs cane whistles through the air.Â
Darkness follows.Â
(The last thing Isack sees is not Helmut, not Arvid. Not even your face.Â
Instead, itâs the locket resting above your collarbone. His birthday gift. The one that houses a sepia photo of you and him.
The one that holds a version of Isack that still might be worth staying for.) â

Pairing: Charles Leclerc x Lydia Colbert (Original Character)
Summary:
When Arthur Leclerc decides his brooding brother Charles needs a love life, he does the obvious: he makes him a secret dating profile. With their motherâs help and absolutely no permission, Arthur impersonates Charles on Rayaâand Chaos ensues. Until one suspiciously perfect woman (with a dachshund) changes everything.Â
Warnings and Notes:Â
Catfishing is obviously bad, even when it's played for laughs in this story. Thanks to the internet for helping me come up with some unhinged online dating stories.
As always big thanks to @llirawolf , who listens to me ramble
Lorenzo stood in the kitchen, nursing a glass of wine and watching Arthur scroll through his phone at alarming speed.Â
âSo,â Lorenzo said slowly, âheâs not coming to dinner?â
Arthur didnât look up. âNope. Texted me twenty minutes ago to say he was âin a complicated emotional placeâ and âneeded to listen to piano alone.ââ
Lorenzo exhaled. âJesus.â
âHe also said he thinks he might be âunlovable at a molecular level.ââ
âDid he actually say that?â
âVerbatim,â Arthur said, flipping screens. âFollowed by a photo of Leo looking like a tired therapist on his day off. and the crying emoji. Twice.â
Lorenzo dragged a hand down his face. âItâs been three months since Sophie.â
âTechnically, two months, twenty-one days,â Arthur said, glancing at the clock. âBut whoâs counting.â
Lorenzo sighed. âHe needs help.â
âHe needs therapy,â Arthur said with a snort.Â
And then Arthurâs eyes lit up like a cartoon character with a plan. âHe needs a girlfriend.â
Lorenzo froze. âArthur.â
âHear me out.â
âNo.â
Arthur put his phone down slowly, deliberately. âIâm making a Raya profile.â
Lorenzo blinked. âYouâre what?â
âNot for me. For him. Iâm going to fix it. The spiral. The sad playlists. All of it.â
âYou want to impersonate Charles on a dating app.â
âI want to rescue him. Emotionally. Romantically. Digitally.â
Lorenzo stared at him. âArthur. That is identity theft.â
âThat is love,â Arthur replied. âIâm Cupid with a Wi-Fi connection.â
âYouâre Cupid with a death wish. Youâre going to catfish people as our brother?â
âNot catfish. Curate. Like a gallery. Of his best self. Itâs not lying. Itâs⊠repackaging.â Arthur stood and began pacing. âCharles is clearly not going to do this himself. Heâs too busy posting moody black-and-white stories of Leo looking out windows with captions like âwe all leave eventually.â I meanâwhat are we even doing?â
âYouâre being insane.â
âItâs matchmaking!â Arthur said, pointing at Lorenzo like a man unveiling a conspiracy theory. âHeâs clearly not going to do it himself. Heâs still following his ex on Instagram, liking her stories at 2 a.m., and writing playlist titles like 'slow laps and slower heartbreak.' He needs help. Iâm being a hero. Do you remember what he said last week? That he was thinking of deleting Instagram and starting over under a new name in the Alps? Thatâs not healing. Thatâs the first act of a French drama where he falls in love with his housekeeperâs goat.â
Lorenzo pinched the bridge of his nose. âAnd you think putting him on a dating app is the answer?â
âWith me controlling it? Yes.â
âYouâre barely qualified to manage your own love life!â
Arthur ignored that. âItâs foolproof. Iâll use good photosâFerrari gala, that one boat pic, something with Leo so women know he has a soul. And Iâll write the bio. Sexy but a little tragic. Like if James Bond cried at Chopin.â
âThis is criminal.â
âThis is charitable.â
âYouâre going to end up matching him with someone who thinks astrology is a political stance!â
âThen Iâll filter for that! Lorenzo, trust me. Iâve seen whatâs out there. These women are feralâbut one of them might just be perfect.â
Lorenzo sighed. âJust donât use that photo from Mykonos.â
Arthur looked offended. âThe shirtless boat one? Thatâs the opener.â

Joris: Lorenzo.
We have a situation.
A serious one.
Lorenzo: If this is about Charles lying on the floor again, Iâve already poured myself a drink.
Joris: No, this is worse.
Arthur is making him a Raya profile.
Lorenzo: ...I know.
Joris: YOU KNOW???

Joris: He just asked me for high-resolution thirst traps.
High-resolution, Lorenzo.

Lorenzo: why would you send him photos???
Joris: BECAUSE HE SAID CHARLES WAS BROODING TO TAYLOR SWIFT AND I PANICKED.
Lorenzo: that⊠tracks. Let me guess. Monaco yacht and Singapore hair day?
Joris: Yes.
And he used the phrase âdo u want Leo to be his emergency contact foreverâ like this was a national crisis.
Lorenzo: That does sound like Arthur. Youâre an accomplice now.
Welcome to the pit.
Joris: He named the operation Raya Redemption.
Lorenzo: Of course he did.
Joris: Should we⊠tell Charles?
Lorenzo: Not until Arthur gets at least one date out of it.
I want to see where this goes.
Joris: Your family is unwell.
Lorenzo: Thatâs the most accurate thing youâve ever said.

Arthur Leclerc cracked his knuckles, opened the Raya app, and began typing with the enthusiasm of a man who once made a Tinder bio for Pierre Gasly that had just said âFrench. Fast. Flexible.â
He had Spotifyâs Ultimate Seduction playlist in the background, two open tabs of Charlesâ most photogenic Instagram photos, and the moral compass of a raccoon in a jewelry store.
âLetâs make some magic, baby.â
He hit âCreate New Profile.â
Name: Charles
Age: 27
Location: Monaco (obviously)
Profession: Formula 1 Driver. Winner of your heart.
Photos:
Shirtless boat pic from Mykonos (for the people)
Shirtless post-workout mirror selfie, beads of sweat on his chestÂ
Shirtless with Leo in his armsÂ
Shirtless from the beach in Sardinia, wet curls, gaze angled to the sun like a Renaissance oil painting with commitment issues
BONUS: A picture of just his hands, veins out, no explanation
Bio :
Fast cars. Fine wine. Passionate nights.
I like long drives through the Italian countryside and strong espresso.
Swipe right if you can keep upâon the track or off it.
Arthur read it back and grinned.
âPerfect. Bit mysterious. Bit unhinged. Bit sexy. Very meâI mean, Charles.â
Then came the matching filters.
Looking for: Women
Age range: 21â35
Distance: Global
Interests: Dancing, cooking, racing, danger, chaos, espresso martinis
Turn-ons (optional): Confidence. High heels. Deep playlists. Women who look like they could ruin my life in Italian.
Arthur sat back, admiring his masterpiece.
âThis,â he muttered, sipping Coke from a wineglass, âis how you get Charles off the floor and into someoneâs arms.â
He hit publish.
Fifteen minutes later, the first like came in from someone named Hot4Horsepower.
Arthur grinned. âAnd so it begins.â

Pascale was in the kitchen, folding linen napkins with the serene efficiency of a woman who had raised three sons, lived through Charlesâ La La Land phase, and once confiscated a bottle of cologne that smelled like âheartbreak and leather.â
Arthur hovered in the doorway like a raccoon with a secret.
âMaman?â
âYes?â
ââŠI need to confess something.â
She looked up, suspicious. âDid you crash another scooter?â
âNo. Worse.â
She put the napkins down slowly. âGo on.â
âI made Charles a Raya profile.â
A beat of silence.
âAnd Iâve been pretending to be him. Vetting the women. Andâplease donât yellâbut I think I mightâve⊠accidentally turned him into a sex symbol with commitment issues.â
Pascale blinked once. Then reached for her wine glass. âWhat exactly does that mean?â
Arthur swallowed. âOne woman sent a voice memo that was just her breathing heavily. Another wrote an essay about his collarbones. And someone named âMILFInSector1â offered to show him her Alonso tattoo. On her thigh, Maman.â
She closed her eyes. âShow me the profile.â
âYouâre not mad?â
âIâm disappointed. In your taste.â
Arthur handed over the phone like it was radioactive.
She scrolled through in silence.
First: shirtless boat pic.
Then: shirtless workout mirror selfie.
Then: Charles shirtless on a beach, looking like he was about to write a tragic sonnet about the sea.
âArthur,â she said slowly. âIs he wearing a shirt in any of these?â
âTechnically⊠no.â
She tapped the screen. âThis one looks like he just seduced a widow on the Italian coast and then vanished before sunrise.â
âThat was the vibe!â
She gave him a look. âAnd this one? With Leo? Shirtless again?â
âItâs the dog dad bait. Women love a soft side.â
âHe looks like a cover model for Brooding Bachelor: Mediterranean Edition.â
Arthur grinned. âExactly.â
Pascale sighed like sheâd aged ten years in five minutes. âRead me the bio.â
Arthur cleared his throat.
âFast cars. Fine wine. Passionate nights.
I like long drives through the Italian countryside and strong espresso.
Swipe right if you can keep upâon the track or off it.â
Pascale stared. Then sipped her wine with great purpose.
âYou wrote this like heâs a walking cologne commercial with a god complex.â
âThank you.â
âNot a compliment. Weâre fixing it. Sit down.â
They sat down at the table. Pascale adjusted her glasses like she was about to perform surgery.
âFirst, weâre removing at least three of the shirtless photos. Leave one. Two max. Any more and he looks like heâs trying to sell protein powder and regrets.â
âCan we keep the Leo one?â
âHeâs shirtless and holding the dog. Thatâs double bait. Youâre not stacking emotional manipulation with abs.â
Arthur sulked. âThe steering wheel hands?â
âThat one can stay. Itâs tasteful. Mysterious. Almost⊠cinematic.â
Arthur perked up. âKnew youâd get it.â
âNow,â she said, rewriting the bio, ââSwipe right if you can keep upâ makes him sound like heâs running from Interpol. Weâre dialing it back.â
They replaced it with:
âPiano at night. Pasta on Sundays. Quiet mornings, loud engines. Looking for someone kindâwith a sense of humor and a stronger tolerance for espresso than me.â
Arthur blinked. âThatâs⊠actually kind of good.â
âI raised you,â she said simply.
She also added a hard filter: âNo users with the words âferal,â âMILF,â or âtoeâ in their usernames.â
Arthur blinked again. âHow do you know this much about dating apps?â
Pascale sipped her wine and smiled. âDarling. I may be a widow. Iâm not dead.â

@/AnaSaysMaybe:
So⊠are you actually looking for something serious or just another Italian summer situationship?
@/charles_leclerc: Ideally something meaningful. No drama. No performative sadness.
@/NoelleDoesNotReply: Just a heads up thoughâI donât reply to texts between the hours of 11 p.m. and 4 p.m.
And I ghost people when Mercuryâs in retrograde.
@/charles_leclerc: So you ghost people⊠for sixteen hours a day?
@/NoelleDoesNotReply: Self-care x
***Â
@/AstridOnFire: You had me at âpiano at night.â
I melt for emotionally repressed men with a flair for the dramatic.
@/charles_leclerc: Iâm⊠not sure thatâs the healthiest criteria, but alright.
@/AstridOnFire: Itâs okay, I fix people.
@/charles_leclerc: That is the least reassuring sentence Iâve ever read.
***
@/CamilleOnCamera: Are you actually looking for a relationship? Or are you just here to cry to Chopin and pretend you're okay?
@/charles_leclerc: Iâm open to something real. Why?
@/CamilleOnCamera: Because I donât do emotions, but I do look great in photos.
So if you want a beautiful mutual breakdown, Iâm your girl.
***
@/JulietteFromNowhere: You seem genuinely lovely, but just so you knowâI bring a lot of intensity to relationships.
Like, âsent my ex a Spotify playlist titled âHaunt Me Foreverââ energy.
@/charles_leclerc: âŠOut of curiosity, how long after the breakup?
@/JulietteFromNowhere:Six months.
But I made the playlist during the relationship. Just in case.
***
@/ZaraLikesChaos: Do you believe in soulmates or is that too cringe?
@/charles_leclerc: I think it depends. Soulmates, maybe. Destiny, yes.
@/ZaraLikesChaos: Good answer.
Anyway, my tarot reader says Iâm going to marry someone with intense eyebrows. Iâm pretty sure itâs you.
***
@/TaliaWithoutLimits: Whatâs your opinion on monogamy?
@/charles_leclerc: Essential, if Iâm being honest.
@/TaliaWithoutLimits: Shame.
Iâm more of a⊠rotating-cast-of-men kind of girl.
But I thought maybe Iâd make an exception if you were taller.
***
@/NaomiNotNice: You look like you feel things. I like that in a man.
@/charles_leclerc: âŠThank you?
@/NaomiNotNice: Do you mind if I name our first child Enzo?
@/charles_leclerc: We havenât even met yet.
@/NaomiNotNice: Manifesting.
***
@/MilaInMotion: Whatâs your relationship with your mother like?
@/charles_leclerc: Close. She helps with most of my major life decisions.
@/MilaInMotion: Oh. Yeah. Thatâs going to be a problem for me.
Iâm allergic to mother-in-laws.
***
@/DaphneOnTheRun: Your dog is adorable. I trust men more when theyâre dog people.
@/charles_leclerc: Leo is the most stable relationship Iâve had.
@/DaphneOnTheRun: Same. My ex stole my cat in the breakup, but I got the espresso machine.
Also, I burned his passport.
@/charles_leclerc: Wait what
***
@/EvaAfterMidnight: Hi. If we go out, please donât talk to me about F1. Iâll pretend to care, but itâs mostly for the photos.
@/charles_leclerc: âŠCharming.
***
@/LucieOffGrid: Hi. You have a dog, a soul, and a tragic vibe. Iâm intrigued.
I live on a boat most of the year. No Wi-Fi. I churn my own butter.
@/charles_leclerc: Thatâs incredibly niche.
How do you⊠date people?
@/LucieOffGrid: I donât. I just appear in their lives, ruin them, and disappear again.
Like fog. Or ex-girlfriends.
@/charles_leclerc: Oh dear God.

Arthur was sitting cross-legged on the couch, hoodie up, blue light permanently etched into his retinas. His thumb moved on instinct now, scrolling through Raya like a war veteranâtwitching every time he saw the words âferal,â âopen relationship,â or âwanna crash into me?â
He was ready to give up.
And then.
@/lydiacolbert
Her profile popped up like a glitch in the system. A miracle in neutral tones.
Photos:
Lydia petting a small cream dachshund on a sunny terrace.
Lydia on a bike, holding her face in the sun.
Lydia laughing in Mykonos. Natural. Unbothered. Beautiful.
Lydia holding a flower pot like itâs an award she just earned.
Lydiaâs dogâin a sweater. A blue sweater and a pink collar. Judging the camera.
Bio:
Currently accepting applications from people who enjoy quiet mornings, dry wit, and very judgmental dachshunds. Looking for something real. Or someone who wonât mind that my dog hates 90% of men.
Arthur sat up straight.
He reread it.
Then again.
âCharles,â he whispered to no one. âThis is her. This is the one Leo wonât bark at.â
Raya Chat Log â @/charles_leclerc (operated by Arthur Leclerc, matchmaking menace)
@/lydiacolbert has matched with you. â
@/lydiacolbert: Hi Charles. I donât usually message first, but your dog looks exactly like mine when heâs silently judging me for talking to men on the internet. I respect that kind of energy.
Arthur stared at the screen.
Then sat bolt upright.
âSheâs perfect.â
Leo looked up from the corner, unimpressed.
Arthur cracked his knuckles and whispered, âDo not ruin this.â
He typed backâcautiously, like approaching a feral cat that might also own a book deal.
@/charles_leclerc: Hello. I think Leo and your dog would get along. Or at least agree to judge us quietly from opposite sides of the room.
Lorenzo: âŠYouâre not qualified to handle this.
Arthur: I KNOW.
I need backup.
Should I respond with poetry or just ask her what her dogâs birth chart is?
Lorenzo: Respond like a normal person. And donât mention astrology.Â
***
Back in the app, Arthur took a breath. And for once, he typed like Charles would.
@/charles_leclerc: Leo once refused to walk for three blocks because someone in a Juventus jersey smiled at him. I trust his instincts more than my own at this point.
@/lydiacolbert: A man after my own heart. Or at least after my dogâs high standards. Whatâs your risotto strategy?
Arthur choked on his Coke Zero.
âOh no,â he muttered. âSheâs real. Sheâs emotionally literate. And she cooks.â
He took a beat. Typed.
@/charles_leclerc: Parmesan. Patience. A disturbing number of YouTube tutorials. And wine. Always wine.
Arthur stared at the message. Then slowly turned to Leo.
âBuddy,â he whispered. âWe mightâve found her.â

WE ARE NO LONGER IN CRISIS
Lorenzo: Did she send you toe pics?
Arthur: NO.
She sent a message about her dog judging her for messaging men.
It was dry. It was flirty. It was sane.
She makes risotto and hates pineapple on pizza. Iâm in love for Charles.
Joris: So⊠weâre not deleting the app after all?
Arthur: No. Weâre framing this match and hanging it above the fireplace.
Pascale: Arthur, I swear to God, if you are still pretending to be your brother, this woman deserves better than whatever Cirque du Soleil act youâre pulling.
Arthur: Maman, relax. Iâm being tasteful. No shirtless photos, no espresso metaphors.
We even discussed dogs before pasta.
Lorenzo: Thatâs the most terrifying sentence Iâve read today.
Arthur: IâM DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT.
Even Leo approved. He wagged his tail. Once.
Pascale: You bribed him with ham, didnât you?
Arthur: Thatâs beside the point.
Joris: Okay, but real talkâwhatâs the plan here?
Are you going to tell Charles at some point, or is he just going to find out heâs dating someone from an app he never downloaded?
Arthur: Weâll ease him into it. Like exposure therapy.
Step 1: Let him spiral less.
Step 2: Keep messaging Lydia until sheâs emotionally invested.
Step 3: Gently reveal the deception.
Step 4: Wedding.
Lorenzo: You skipped âtell the truthâ and âdeal with the emotional falloutâ in your little master plan.
Pascale: I raised criminals.
Arthur: You raised innovators.
Pascale: When Charles finds out, Iâm making all of you explain it to him.
In person.
While I film it.
Arthur: Youâll thank me when heâs married to the elegant Parisian woman with a judgmental dachshund and a normal relationship with emotional intimacy.
Lorenzo: Or heâll drown you in the Monaco marina.
Arthur: Thatâs a risk Iâm willing to take.

Charles took a sip of his espresso and opened Twitter with the innocent hope of seeing race predictions or maybe a meme about Pierreâs new sunglasses.
Instead, the first thing he saw was a tweet with his face and the words:
@/paddocktea:okay but WHO is running charles leclercâs raya account(s) bc i just found TWO and they are⊠spiritually different??? exhibit a: âFast cars. Fine wine. Passionate nights. I like long drives and women who donât ask too many questions.â vs âPiano at night. Pasta on Sundays. Looking for someone kind and espresso-tolerant.â one of these was written by a shirtless man with cologne in his eyes and the other by someoneâs extremely French mother
[2 screenshots attached]
Charles blinked.
Scrolled.
Opened the replies.
@/feralgirlsf1: first version: "I will ruin you in Lake Como" second version: "I will feed you carbonara and never leave" who is writing this manâs character arc
@/drive_me_delirious: I KNOW ARTHUR MADE THE FIRST ONE. I KNOW IT IN MY BONES. but who made the sad poet rebrand? because I want to thank her
@/alonsohater420: Pascale Leclerc. Thatâs my theory. That woman raised sons and keeps receipts.
@/feralforferrari: âWinner of your heartâ STOP WHO LET HIM TYPE THAT???
@/leoclubfanpage: not me cross-referencing shirtless beach pics with his Instagram to determine authenticity đ
@/wifedashboard: someone said the new bio sounds like his maman made it and honestly?? not wrong
Charles put down his espresso with surgical care.
Then clicked on the screenshots.
First one:
Shirtless. Mykonos.
Shirtless. Beach.
Shirtless. Leo.
âFast cars. Fine wine. Passionate nights.â
He audibly choked.
Second one:

Charles: Lorenzo. There are slideshows. There are threads.
Charles: There are comparative analyses of which version of my fictional dating self is hotter.
Charles: Someone said the first one was âsex on a Vespaâ and the second one was âgrief with a good red.â
Lorenzo: ...Okay but thatâs honestly fair.
Charles: WHO. DID. THIS.
Lorenzo: I think nowâs a good time to ask if you are in the countryâŠ
Charles: LORENZO.
Lorenzo: Okay. Fine.
The first one was Arthur.
The second one was⊠a joint operation.
Charles: WHAT.
Lorenzo: Arthur made the original profile without your knowledge.
You were spiraling. He panicked.
Then he asked Maman for help and she helped him rebrand you into someone⊠softer.

Arthur: hi love

Charles: YOU PUT âWINNER OF YOUR HEARTâ IN THE BIO.
Pascale: I removed it. The first one made you sound like a cologne ad thatâs banned in most countries.
The second one is tasteful. Sophisticated. A man with depth and a signature pasta.
Charles: YOU REBRANDED ME AS A TRAGIC HUSBAND?!?

Charles: NO.
Arthur: YES.
Pascale: She messaged first. Thatâs a good sign. Confident. Emotionally balanced.
Charles: NO ONE IS EMOTIONALLY BALANCED IN THIS FAMILY
Lorenzo: She likes sarcasm, risotto, and espresso.
She messaged to say your dog looks like hers when judging her for dating.
You flirted about risotto for like six messages.
Charles: I DID WHAT??
Arthur: technically I flirted
but I was channeling your tragic poet energy so it was spiritually accurate
Pascale: Sheâs very elegant. Also, she uses punctuation in her messages.
We vetted her.
Charles: YOU VETTED HER??
Arthur: Maman and I read her Instagram captions.
She passed. No star sign rants. No frog collections.

Charles was sitting on the floor. Because of course he was.
His phone sat on the couch above him, like a bomb. Still open to the group chat where his family casually confessed to identity theft and matchmaking in one breath.
He sighed.
Then, like a man opening a cursed scroll, he opened the Raya app. Logged in with the password Arthur had supplied: PinsĂ roulettes16 (Arthur was not subtle.Charles should probably consider himself lucky that nobody had hacked it yet.)
New Matches: 1 @/lydiacolbert â
He blinked at the name.
Then the profile.
Paris.
Model.
Cream-colored dachshund in a blue sweater.
Laughing in Mykonos.
Holding a flower pot like it told her a secret.
Judgmental but kind eyes.
Her bio:
Currently accepting applications from people who enjoy quiet mornings, dry wit, and very judgmental dachshunds.
Looking for something real. Or someone who wonât mind that my dog hates 90% of men.
Charles stared.
Then scrolled to the messages.
@/lydiacolbert: Hi Charles. I donât usually message first, but your dog looks exactly like mine when heâs silently judging me for talking to men on the internet. I respect that kind of energy.
@/charles_leclerc (aka Arthur): Hello. I think Leo and your dog would get along. Or at least agree to judge us quietly from opposite sides of the room.
@/charles_leclerc: Parmesan. Patience. A disturbing number of YouTube tutorials. And wine. Always wine.
And muttered to Leo, âIf I marry her, youâre getting a tux.â
Leo rolled over, unimpressed.
***
Charles arrived early.
Like, way early.
Like, sat-down-twenty-minutes-before-the-reservation-straightening-the-salt-shakers early.
Leo was wearing his least-offensive harnessâthe navy one Pascale called ârespectable.â
Charles had asked his mother to steam his shirt because he would have burned it. And heâd spent ten minutes standing in front of his cologne collection with the expression of a man selecting a weapon for emotional battle.
He went with the subtle one. The one that didnât smell like haunted heartbreak on the Riviera.
Now he was trying not to pass out.
He kept checking his phoneânot for messages, but to reread hers. Like they were prayers. Or sheet music. Something steady. Predictable. Beautiful.
He was on the fourth reread when he heard a soft âHi.â
Because yes, Lydia looked like her pictures. The soft light, the clean lines, the effortless grace. But in real life, she looked like sunlight through linen curtains. Like the kind of quiet joy you donât realize youâve been missing until itâs there, in front of you, wearing ankle boots and a knowing smile.
And with every laugh, every dry observation, every easy silence, something in Charles started to settle.
Like maybe he wasnât broken.
Like maybe he was just⊠waiting.
Until the warmth in his chest got too dangerous.
And he blurted it out.
âI need to confess something.â
Lydia paused, cappuccino halfway to her mouth. âOkay. Iâm listening. Should I be concerned?â
Charles exhaled. âMaybe.â
She leaned in slightly. âDid you lie about being able to make risotto? Because honestly, Iâd survive.â
âNo. I can make risotto.â
âThen what is it?â
Charles swallowed. âThis profile. On Raya. It wasnât me. Not at first. It was my brother. Arthur. He made it without telling me.â
Lydia raised an eyebrow, intrigued.
âAnd then,â Charles continued grimly, âmy maman got involved. She edited it. There were⊠filters. There was a group chat. I only found out after it went viral on Twitter.â
Lydia blinked.
Then leaned back. Processing.
Then she squinted.
âWaitâboth versions of your profile were real?â
Charles groaned. âYes. One was Arthurâs masterpiece. All shirtless photos and chaos. The other was⊠Arthurâs chaos, edited by a woman who once made me redo a thank-you note because it wasnât emotionally sincere.â
And thenâ
She laughed.
Not a polite giggle. Not a smirk.
A full, head-back, eyes-crinkled, joyful laugh.
âYouâre telling me,â she gasped, âyour mother edited your Raya profile?â
Charles nodded miserably. âShe cut the shirtless photos. Said I was âthe first one made me sound like a cologne ad thatâs banned in most countries.â Her words. Not mine.âÂ
Charles looked at her sideways. âSo⊠youâre not running?â
âNo,â she said, smiling. âBut I am making fun of you for this forever.â
He laughedâreally laughed. The kind that surprised him. The kind that had been stuck behind his ribs since Sophie.
The kind he didnât know he missed until this exact moment.
Then Lydia, still grinning, reached across the table and stole half his croissant with zero shame.
Charles blinked at her, stunned.
âSo⊠am I meeting your mum on the second date or the third?â He nearly choked on his espresso.
She leaned closer and said, very softly,
âIâm really glad you showed upâeven if it took your brother, your mother, and a deeply haunted dating app to make it happen,â
And Charles, soft, stunned, grinning like a fool, thought:
Iâm screwed. Sheâs it. Leoâs going to need a tux.

ââââ ⊠Chapter II.
âMark Webberâ sounded like an important name, enough to have its gold plaque hanging on a solid oak door.
The man who opened it matched that imageâserene and proud, the kind of man that had known glory, however small, in the past. Mark Webber's charisma was undeniable, yes, but the expectation that lit up his face as he extended a hand toward you, the need for recognition clearly visible in his eyes, made him so painfully human that your shoulders relaxed.
He may have been the manager of your future clientâa âone-of-a-kind young talent in motorsports' according to the job descriptionâbut he was still a man, and you knew how to deal with those. Had been doing it for years during your bachelorâs degree and, later on, your masterâs in business administration and management. Those so-called âsons ofâ or âself-made menâ proliferated in Harvard, waiting for one thing only: for you to recognize them without ever needing to introduce themselves.
But because you desperately needed this job and hadnât gone through three interviews for nothing, you swallowed your pride, smiled, and extended your hand.
âMr. Webber, itâs an honour to meet you.â
âThe pleasure is mine, Miss L/N. Thank you for coming on such short notice. Iâm afraid time is not on our side right now. I do hope you had a moment to look over the contract HR sent you.â
He led you to his office, cluttered with paperwork. You winced at the chaos, resisting the urge to bring order to the madness. Instead, you sat down, crossed your legs, and pulled the employment contract from your folder.
Your very own Holy Grail.
âHereâs my copy. Initialled and signed.â
You had shed a few tears as you slid the pen across the pageâa strange blend of relief and frustration. One of those emotions only fate itself could concoct. Because you had not planned this. Not at all. For years, you had envisioned yourself as a talent agent, maybe a manager at a publicly traded companyâbut certainly not the personal assistant to one Oscar Piastri, whose name you hadnât even known three weeks earlier.
When life gives you lemons, learn to make lemonade or suffer their bitterness, your grandmother used to say.
You had chosen your side quickly, picked the lemons yourself, pressed them, sweetened the juice, and learned to savour the taste. You who had never liked citrus fruits had now convinced yourself to see in that pale yellow flesh a sign of future success, of stability.
How many lemon trees would you need to harvest before your parents got used to the sourness?
Watching their prodigy of a daughter become a ârich manâs servantâ, after paying for five years at Harvard, was a truth they struggled to swallowâa sourness lodged in the throat, leaving behind the bitter tang of defeat.
When you had graduated summa cum laude, your parents had imagined youâd be drowning in job offers. But reality hit hard. Brutally hard. Intelligence alone wasnât enough. The worldâs best companies didnât hire without connections, and you had none.
The first disillusionment in life stings like nothing else.
So, you had to swallow your pride, lower your standards, and look elsewhere. Anything, reallyâanything but unemployment and long days spent contemplating the wreckage of your ambitions.
Anything but failure.
The job description had arrived in your inbox amid hundreds of others. That night, you had drunk two glasses of red wineâmaybe moreâyour cheeks streaked with mascara and the remnants of your frustration. You had received two rejections that very morning. Overqualified, they had said.
Bullshit, you replied. They just didnât want to pay you what your degrees were worth.
For months now, you had been sufferingâstuck in this purgatory. Too qualified for some roles, not enough for others. The adjectives varied, but the outcome remained the same. You barely needed to read the emails anymore. You knew the words by heart.
After reviewing your profile, and despite its many strengths, we have decided not to move forward with your application.
It was with those words echoing in your mind that you clicked on the job offer. Personal Assistant. Your eyes widened at the jaw-dropping salary and the list of benefits.
âWhat the actual fuck?â you mumbled.
Suddenly sobered, you sat up straight and read the required qualifications eagerly, a flicker of hope warming your chest for the first time in weeks. The words were genericâexperience, organisation, management, flexibilityâbut you welcomed their familiarity.
Your internship with one of New Yorkâs top CEOsâthe one your classmates had mocked, claiming âit wasnât a real internship with real responsibilitiesââwas finally proving useful.
The next day, you received an email with an interview date.
A month later, you found yourself in the heart of London, ready to sign your first real contractâno matter what your parents thought on the matter.
You blinked away the sound of their voices. You wouldnât let a few bitter scraps of lemon zest ruin what was beginning to look like a stroke of fate. Instead, you watched Mr. Webber sign the contract. With each initial written on the paper, you felt a weight lift from your shoulders.
Thatâs it, you thought. I have a job.
Yes, being a personal assistant wasnât the career you had dreamt of; yes, you were overqualifiedâbut it was still a job. And a well-paid one. Probably better than a quarter of your former classmates now working as marketing consultants.
Mark Webber capped his pen and smiled at you.
âWell then, welcome aboard.â
You couldnât suppress the laugh of pure relief that shook your shoulders as you tucked the signed contract back into the folder.
Webber rummaged through the chaos on his desk and pulled from its depths a rectangular white box, which he slid across to you. A brand-new iPhone 14.
âHereâs your work phone. Iâve already inserted the SIM card. I donât know if youâve worked with this kind of setup before, but itâs a bit different from a regular iPhoneâmore secure, more restricted. Oh, and I almost forgot the most important part: HR should send you an email within the next couple of days with information you need to have, including Oscarâs number.â
âOf course.â
âYouâll meet him soon enough. Iâd like the two of you to feel comfortable around each other as soon as possible. Itâs his first season as a full-time driver and his first time working with a personal assistant. I want everything to go smoothly.â
âNaturally.â
Mark Webber sank back into his chair, eyes fixed on you. You held his gaze. He smiled.
âIâve got a good feeling about you. I had it the moment I saw your CV.â
âI wonât let you down,â you promised.
Just like Markâwho had insisted you call him thatâhad said, the meeting with Oscar came swiftly. An email arrived in your inbox four days after your interviews, listing a time and an address.
Six days later, as winter tightened its grip on England with sharp winds and grey skies, you wandered through the deserted streets of Hertford for several minutes before stumbling upon a building that looked quintessentially Britishâred brick walls, single-hung white windowsâthe kind your grandparents had once lived in. It was unremarkable, to the point that you wondered if you had typed in the wrong address in Maps. Didnât Formula 1 drivers earn outrageous salaries?
A gust of wind stung your cheeks. You pulled your coat tighter around you and pressed the doorbell labeled âO. Piastri.â The ink on the name was nearly washed away, chased by the rain and all the other pleasantries of English weather. Mother Nature herself seemed determined to guard his anonymity.
âYou can come up. Third floor, last door on the left.â
Markâs voice crackled through the intercom, as though his client had no voice of his own. Your mind wandered: would he sound the same, or had his years in England worn away his accent, like the ink on his doorbell?
Apartment 3Bâs door appeared sooner than you expected, leaving you no time to steel yourself. This was a decisive moment. If Oscar Piastri didnât like youâif he deemed you unfit for any reasonâthey would terminate your probationary period, and you would be cast back into the labyrinth of professional limbo.
I just need him to like me. Simple enough, right?
As you adjusted the collar of your sweater, the door opened to reveal Mark. He greeted you with a nod and stepped aside. You didnât spare a glance for the apartment. Instead, your eyes fell immediately on the young man seated at the table. Your gazes locked.
You gulped.
You had read Oscar Piastriâs Wikipedia page, of course. Before you became an assistant, you had been a student, and if there was one thing you had mastered during that time, it was research. You had stuck only to the facts, never clicking on the suggested videos or press interviewsâresolute in forming your own impression.
âHello. Iâm Y/N, pleased to meet you.â
âOscar.â
Your handshake offered little reassurance, nor did the driverâs impassive expression. You swallowed again and instinctively hugged your notebook to your chest before taking a seat opposite him.
You listened half-heartedly as Mark launched into a stream of benign, reassuring remarksâan overview of your role you had already read over multiple times. Realizing you wouldnât need to speak, you let yourself drift from the monologue and instead studied the boy you would be working for, scanning his impassive face for any hint on your potential dynamic.
Like many, you had seen The Devil Wears Prada, and while you were aware you werenât going to work for Vogue, Formula 1 seemed every bit as cutthroat as the fashion worldâcatfights and sabotage didnât seem far-fetched in a microcosm so thoroughly built by and for men.
âSo, thatâs everything,â Mark concluded. âAny questions?â
Oscar shook his head. You mirrored the gesture.
You both shook hands again, before you left Hertford with a new file in your handbag and a knot in your stomach.
December faded; January dawned, bringing with it a new year and its obligations. You moved to Hertford, into a small townhouse not far from Oscarâs apartment, though you never found the courage to cross the neighborhood that separated you.
Instead, you improvised a home office on your dining table, where you set up your laptop and phoneâdevices you would stare at for hours, waiting for the screen to light up, though it never did despite the messages you had sent Oscar.
Would you like me to order a coffee for your video call with Zak Brown?
Do you need anything specific before your trip to Monaco?
When are you planning to leave for Australia? Iâll book the tickets.
You always left your ringer on, even through the night. Just in case he calls, you told yourself. But it never came. No calls. No messages. No requests. Just silenceâheavyâand that infuriating âseenâ icon.
At least Mark had the decency to keep you in the loop regarding Oscarâs upcoming obligations. The driver himself had all but vanished. His absence brewed a storm of emotions in you.
First doubt. Then anger.
Did Oscar think you incompetent? Did he consider himself above you?
You lasted a week before you snapped. One week of avoidance. One week of âseen.â One week of voicemails.
You retreated from your desk to your bed, turned off your ringer, and replaced calls and messages with emailsâthough those, too, went unanswered.
Please find attached your outbound ticket to Melbourne, departing from London Gatwick on Dec 14 at 10:30 AM. A taxi has been booked to pick you up at 7:00 AM.
Let me know your preferred return date, and Iâll handle the booking promptly.
P.S. Donât forget your Zoom meeting with Mr. Ellis Woodward from McLaren HR on Dec 18 at 9:30 AM London time (6:30 PM Melbourne time). Here's once again the link: https://zoom.us/j/814553
Offlane would like to schedule a video call to discuss your websiteâs new branding. Mark emphasized that it should be handled before the New Year. Please let me know your availability.
Attached are the proposed designs for your review.
âI donât understand why you hired me if Oscar flat-out refuses my help," you said one day, matter-of-factly. âHe wonât even answer my emails.â
On your MacBook screen, Mark sighed. The sound crackled harshly in your ears. You grimaced, but quickly composed yourself, afraid heâd take the gesture personally, before turning the volume down and glancing around.
You found comfort in this silence. It was unlike the one at homeâless oppressive, more soothing.
Your latte, sweetened with vanilla syrup, was going cold. Yet even masked by sugar, you couldnât get rid of the bitterness that had seeped into all your meals.
Lately, the lemons life gave you were either underripe or rotten.
Oscar Piastri had spoiled the lemonade recipe you had spent years perfecting. You had forgotten its tangy sweetness and were now biting into the bitter rind of failure.
âOscar is... a guarded young man,â Mark replied after a suffocating pause. âThat mess with Alpine and his contract didnât help. From his perspective, you could betray him just like they did. McLaren are the only one he trusts right now. I think thatâs why heâs counting on their PR assistant for now.â
You frowned. The statement stung more than you cared to admit. Mark must have sensed it, because he quickly added: âBut donât worryâIâll speak to him. Things will improve. Whether he likes it or not, he needs an assistant. Iâve made that clear. Everythingâs about to speed up come late January, and I want him focused on racing.â
âThen why didnât you ask McLaren to hire someone if he trusts them so much?â you asked, your tongue thick with resentment.
âBecause a contract is just that. A contract. It expires and no one knows what tomorrow will bring. I want him to trust someone outside of that system. And if that means we pay your salary ourselves, so be it. Itâs worth it. Loyalty is rare in this sport. I want to give it a chance to bloom without any influence.â
You nodded, but a lump had settled in your throat. Guilt. On your parentsâ advice, you had begun quietly looking for other jobs.
You canât go on like this, theyâd told you. You deserve respect. And painful as it was to admitâthey were right.
âI understand,â you finally said. âAnd I understand his trust issues. God knows Iâve been betrayed more than once during internships. I donât blame him for that. But Iâd appreciate it if he at least acknowledged my emails.â
âIâll speak to him,â Mark repeated. âIn the meantime, keep doing your job. I see every email you send, and I want to commend youânot just for your efficiency and initiative, but for your professionalism despite Oscarâs behaviour. Your efforts are not in vain.â
You didnât know what to say, so you simply nodded. It was hard to accept praise when the one person you were meant to work for gave you no recognition at all.
âI have to go. McLaren call in five minutes. Keep it upâIâll handle Oscar.â
Your tired and discouraged face stared back at you on the black screen. You sighed, took a sip of cold coffee, and began typing a new email.
As Mark and your new McLaren PR assistant may have informed you, Quad Lock (an Australian brand for sports phone mounts) is interested in sponsoring you in 2023.
Theyâre only available on Thursday, January 16 at 10:30 AM, but youâre scheduled for a padel session then. Would you prefer I reschedule, or can you make yourself available?
That evening, you nearly choked on your red wine when your phone buzzed. You immediately recognized the soundâyour inboxâand tapped the notification with a trembling finger.
You ended up staring at the screen for far too long. Since when did a simple email affect you so deeply? You had studied at Harvard, for Godâs sake. Interned at prestigious firms. Yet here you wereâshaken by a curt reply from a bull-headed driver.
If your parents could see you now, theyâd sigh.
You typed a reply, erased it, retyped the same one, changed a word, fixed a typo, thenâuncertainârewrote it altogether.
Then deleted it again.
And finally typed: âThanks, Iâll inform them.â
You tossed your phone across the bed and drained your wine in one big gulp.
You didnât know what to make of the sudden shift, but one thing was certain: you could count on Mark. And there was nothing more reassuring than not feeling alone in your corner.
You longed for the sense of excitement that had animated you when you had signed your contract in this very office, just a few weeks ago. The golden plaque on the door still bore Markâs name but it no longer gleamed as it had that first day. It appeared dull nowâfaded, even.
He had summoned you to discuss Oscarâs upcoming first days with McLaren, and the logistical arrangements it would require.
Upon your arrival, the secretary had promptly informed you that the Australian would be running late. Something about a meeting âtoo important to be cut short.â
So, you had sat down in one of the waiting room chairs and begun flipping through your notebook to review the brief Mark had sent two days prior. But muffled voices soon broke your concentration.
You looked up. The office door stood slightly ajar.
You immediately recognized Markâs voice. Another, deeper and more assertive, kept interrupting him.
Oscar.
Eyes wide, you gently closed your notebook and placed it on the seat beside you before moving closer to the door.
âThis canât go on,â said Mark. âBesides your blatant lack of professionalism, you're making things harder for yourself on purpose.â
âI donât need an assistant.â
Theyâre talking about me, you realized.
You swallowed hard and leaned in.
âAnd Iâm telling you that you do. Youâre stepping into the big leagues, Oscar. That means four times the responsibilities, four times the meetings. Your little Google Calendar mightâve worked in F2 and in 2022, but thatâs no longer the case. You need someone.â
âThatâs why youâre here.â
âIâm here to help you negotiate contracts, not book your flights or your hair appointments. I have enough on my plate as it is, and you do too. Youâre literally starting at McLaren in two weeks!â
You recoiled. The words stung, not just because of what he said, but how he said it. You had expected indifference from Oscar, but never cruelty.
âYou can complain all you want,â Mark replied coolly. âIt wonât change a damn thing. She is your assistantâand given the excellent work sheâs done despite your shitty attitude, she will remain as such. So get used to seeing her around.â
âWhatever,â Oscar muttered.
Silence followed, then soft but steady footsteps.
Your stomach twisted. You scrambled back to your seat, notebook now trembling in your damp hands. Your heartbeat was so loud you could feel it pounding in your temples.
Oscar soon appeared in the doorway. His dark eyes immediately found yours. You froze, gaze fixed on a blurry sentence, your heart in your throat.
Out of the corner of your eye, you saw him stop. His stare scorched the right side of your face. Your cheeks burnedâwhether from fury or adrenaline, you couldnât say. Perhaps both.
After what felt like an eternity, the driver turned and walked away. Without a word. As always.
He didnât even have the decency to say it to my face, you thought.
Something inside you cracked at that realizationâthe last stronghold of patience, the final tower of understanding.
Rage surged through your veins and turned your chest into a battlefield. Amid the carnage, a voice pierced your armour. You looked up and saw Mark, one hand on the door handle.
âAre you coming?â
You followed him into the office mechanically, sat down in the leather chair, opened your notebook, nodded silently at every sentence he spoke, scribbled down notes you knew you would never read, and asked no questions.
More than once, Mark raised an eyebrow at your uncharacteristic silence, but you deliberately ignored his questioning glances.
Gone was the eager assistant, determined to prove herself, always anticipating her clientâs needs. In her place sat a woman with furrowed brows and brisk, sharp movementsâhardened by a fresh wave of anger.
One of the first management courses you had taken at Harvard had introduced the idea of professional archetypes. Who was motivated by emotion? Rewards? Everyone prided themselves for their individuality, their uniqueness, but, at the end, we all fell a category. And you knew you thrived for acknowledgmentâsomething Oscar had never given you. Not once.
And that hurt.
So no, you didnât feel guilty for not listening during the meeting. Mark continued with his verbose explanations, but you knew the spielâŠ
Oscarâs debut at McLaren was fast approaching. It would be a critical momentâfor him, for Mark, for you.
And yet, despite knowing all that, you couldnât bring herself to care.
She doesnât belong here.
At the memory of those words, you tightened your grip on your pen.
âY/N,â Mark said eventually, his tone tentative. âAbout Oscar⊠I think weâre finally getting somewhere.â
You stifled a bitter laugh and nodded. He eventually dismissed you, realizing you had nothing further to say, and you didnât hesitate to walk outâslamming the door behind you, decorum be damned.
Once home, you glanced at your makeshift desk on the dining table, then at your work phoneâsilent, as always.
That was the final strawâthe dark screen.
On impulse, you reached out to your cousin, a doctor.
One of your professors had once spoken at length about the value of networking and connections. You finally understood the importance of those when, thirty minutes later, a five-day medical leave form landed in your inbox.
You forwarded it to Mark, turned off your phone, and threw it into a drawer.
If Oscar didnât need you, then he could handle his McLaren debut on his own.
During the first two days, you didnât leave your bed. You stayed under the covers and ignored the world outsideâthough the latter seemed determined not to ignore you. Your parents kept sending you links to job offers, and Mark had started calling your personal number.
On the third day, someone knocked.
Oscar.
The moment you saw him standing there, you didnât thinkâyou tried to slam the door in his face. But the driver was fasterâdamn reflexesâand caught it with one hand.
âWe need to talk.â
âI have nothing to say to you.â
âPlease.â
That one word made you falter.
âI know you took medical leave,â he continued. âMark told me. I also know youâre not really sick and itâs because of me.â
That caught your attention. Oscar took advantage of the hesitation and slipped through the gap. You protested, pushed against his chest to get him out, but you were no match to his strength.
Soon, Oscar Piastri was standing in your apartment.
The sight was so surreal you blinked, convinced you were hallucinating. But no, he was real and had just turned your worst nightmare into reality.
âIâm sorry, okay?â he said. âI was an asshole.â
You scoffed and crossed your arms.
âUnderstatement of the fucking year.â
Oscar took your hand and held it in his.
Your eyes widened.
âI thought I didnât need an assistant, but I was wrong.â
You rolled your eyes before pulling away.
âOh, right. So what? You had some epiphany while I was gone?â
âYes.â
âBullshit.â
âI missed three meetings with McLaren and was late to two others because I didnât get your reminder emails.â
You raised an eyebrow.
âMark didnât send anything?â
It was surprising, given how insistent heâd been about professionalism before Oscarâs debut.
âHe said it was to âhelp me realize how much I fucked up.ââ
You stifled a smile as a warm wave washed over youâpart pride, part relief. Mark had stood up for you. Your heart felt just a little lighter.
You looked up at Oscar.
But then a memoryâsharp and coldâsoured the moment.
âYou said I didnât belong there,â you whispered.
You hated yourself for voicing it, for letting the insecurity slip through. The same one your parents had spent years nurturing.
A heavy silence followed.
âYou heard us,â he simply said. âMark and me. The other day.â
It wasnât a question, so you didnât answer. Oscar ran a hand through his hair and sighed.
âBecause I did,â he cut you off. âAnd youâre overqualified. You graduated from Harvard, for fuckâs sake! You deserve so much more than being my personal assistant.â
For the first time, you were speechless.
âBut I guess Iâm selfish,â he sighed. âI still think you deserve better, but now that I know how much I need you, I donât want you to leave.â
He stepped closer.
âSo please, forgive me. Iâll give you a raiseâjust name your price. But donât quit.â
You hesitated, frozen in the middle of your living room, facing a visibly nervous Oscar. Were you making a mistake? Giving in too easily? What if this was just a momentary change of heart? What if, in three weeksâ time, everything went back to how it was?
As if reading your thoughts, Oscar took another step and rushed to reassure you.
He smiled, and the sight of those bunny teeth softened something in your chest.
âThat too.â
You had come to love this job in the past weeks. It quenched your thirst of order and precision. And, Oscar aside, it was relatively simple.
The salary didnât hurt either.
âYou have no self-respect, woman,â you muttered under your breath before taking a deep breath and speaking aloud. âFine.â
You said it quickly, as if speaking too slowly would give regret the time to catch up.
Maybe forgiving him wasnât the best decision. Maybe your first impression hadnât been good either.
Maybe you had both made mistakes.
âWhat?â
âI said, fine.â
Oscar looked as though he wanted to hug youâyou saw it in the way his muscles tensedâbut he thought better of it and rested a hand on your shoulder instead.
âThank you.â
Yoy offered him a small smile and straightened up. Oscarâs hand fell back to his side.
âWell⊠Letâs start over, shall we?â
You held out a hand.
âHello, Iâm Y/N. Iâll be your personal assistant. If you need anything, Iâm here.â
Oscar took it and gave it a gentle shake.
âHi, Iâm Oscar and I wonât screw up this time.â
Woking was a rather dreary town, you concluded as you watched its brick buildings pass by through the window of Oscarâs car. A typical English town, with uniform neighbourhoods and a colour palette of browns and whites.
âFeeling nervous?â you asked, glancing at Oscarâs hands, clenched so tightly around the steering wheel they were turning white.
âYes."
âGood. It wouldâve been strange if you werenât. It means you care.â"â
He sighed and turned down the radio.
âMark warned me theyâd drown me with information. Iâm worried I wonât remember anything and that Iâll come across as a rookie.â
âThatâs what Iâm here for. Just try to remember the essentials, and Iâll take care of the rest,â you replied, giving your black notebook a shake.
The movement caught Oscarâs attention, and he glanced away from the road for a second. He hummed in acknowledgment, and silence settled once again over the car.
There remained in your interactions traces of your chaotic beginnings. The team-building week Mark had forced you into, squeezed into the slim window of time leading up to today, had helped, but one didnât simply erase a month of mutual silence with the wave of a wand.
Both of you had promised Oscarâs manager to try. You had sealed the pact without hesitationâanything was preferable to playing yet another damned escape room.
Oscar eventually gestured toward the notebook with a nod.
âYouâll need an orange one.â
You clutched it to your chest with a grimace. Loose pages and stray Post-its crinkled against your wool winter coat. It was an organized chaos of contracts and printed emailsâa reflection of the turbulent start to Oscarâs F1 career, and their own beginnings.
âItâs not even full yet! And I donât like orange.â
âA sticker, then.â
You pursed your lips.
âI suppose. But only if I get to pick the design.â
âIt has to be related to the team or me, though.â
âIt is related to you. It contains your entire life for the next eight months.â
Oscar cut the conversation short when he took a sharp turn.
âLookâweâre here.â
You blinked at the building.
What kind of Avengers shit is this?
The building looked like it had been plucked straight from the future and placed with uncanny precision beside the lake. Everything about it exuded innovation and ambitionâthe kind of place you had imagined yourself working for after graduating.
Today, you were entering it as a mere personal assistant.
A part of you felt bitter at the thought, but you quickly buried the feeling when Oscar opened his door and offered you a hand.
Mark was already waiting at the entrance, flanked by a man you recognized as Zak Brown, and another with tanned skin and graying hair.
âAndrea Stella, the team principal,â Oscar murmured in your ear, seeing your confused expression.
Zak and Andrea greeted you politelyânothing moreâbefore turning their full attention to Oscar. Mark, on the other hand, walked over to you with a sly smile on his thin lips.
âYou managed the drive without killing each other? Iâm impressed.â
As if he hadnât just forced the two of you into a three-hour tug-of-war last WednesdayâŠ
You all entered the building together. You were left speechless by the modern architecture and followed the group of men on autopilot. Very quickly, Oscar began meeting the teamâone person after another. The receptionists. The mechanics. The engineers. The technicians. The designers. You jotted down as much as you could in your little notebook, but even you soon felt overwhelmed, your wrist aching.
âOf course you know Cecilia, your PR assistant,â announced Zak Brown as they entered the office area.
That was enough to catch your attention. You snapped your head up so fast your neck cracked. You couldnât help narrowing your eyes, givng a once-over to the woman whoâd had such a good job back in November. Beside you, Mark stifled a laugh.
âCarefulâyou almost look jealous.â
âI donât care.â
But you couldnât hide your satisfied smile as you observed the interaction between the twoâcordial and awkward.
Take that, Cecilia.
âAh!â Zak exclaimed. âJust the man we were looking for! Lando, come meet your new teammate.â
You rose onto your toes to catch sight of the newcomer.
Of course, you knew who Lando Norris was. A McLaren driver since 2019 and now Oscarâs teammate. Nothing moreâjust the essentials. That was enough. Memorizing the information Mark and Oscar fed you already took up a quarter of your time; you didnât have room for another driver.
He shook hands with everyone with the ease of someone familiar in his environment. There was no hesitation in his movements, just a quiet confidence.
âNice to meet you, Oscar.â
âLikewise.â
The Australian stepped aside, revealing you behind him. Your eyes met. Landoâs widened.
âAnd this isââ
But before Oscar could introduce you, Lando stumbled and fell at your feet.
You blinked. Then rushed to help him. Your knees hit the smooth floor, but you had no time to feel the pain; your hand quickly found the Britâs shoulder.
âMy God! Are you alright?â
Lando sprang back up and recoiled from your touch as though burned, his face flushed crimson.
âY-yes,â he stammered, eyes fixed on the floor.
He mumbled words you didnât catchâsomething about an engineer and a meetingâthen spun around and disappeared down the corridor.
You blinked once, twice, then shook your head and hurried to rejoin the group for the rest of the tour, which lasted another two long hours.
âLandoâŠâ you began once you and Oscar were back in the car.
âWhat about him?â
âHeâs a bit⊠odd, donât you think?â
Oscar shot you a quick glance before focusing back on the road. Already, the McLaren Technology Centre was nothing more than a vague grey blur in the rearview mirror. The engine roared, churning your stomachâor perhaps that was the regret creeping onto your tongue.
You and Oscar werenât yet close enough for you to speak so freely. What would he think of you, openly criticizing his future teammate?
âI suppose,â he admitted, to your utmost relief. âI havenât really had the chance to talk with him yet. Weâre planning to meet up before the first tests. He mentioned something about padel.â
You pulled your notebook from your bag and uncapped your fountain pen, glad for the change in topic.
