You are a warrior of the Freeborn Blades, a group of mercenaries known and feared throughout Vertiel. But as the Deadarmy breaks into a ritual organized by your latest employers, things turn sour and, and you find yourself suddenly possessed by a flame demon.

After your initial surprise, and that of your companions, you start feeling the power of the demon within you, running through your veins... but this power, should you decide to use it, comes at a price: your very own humanity.

Impact on the story

Your adventure in Bound by Flame will change radically according to the relationship you have with the demon: will you yield to the formidable power it gives you, or will you fight to preserve your human self?

At several key points of the story, you will have to make crucial choices, between using the demonic powers offered to you, or choose a more heroic path and preserve your humanity.

Be wary, as your choices will impact the reactions of the various characters and your companions… ultimately, the very way the story unfolds will depend entirely on your decisions.

Visual Impact

Each of your decisions will have an influence, not only on what and who is around you, but also on yourself!

The more of your humanity you give up to the demon, the more powerful you will become, affecting your appearance as your soul becomes more and more corrupted.

Venturing the “demon path” will transform your character, through different stages which show the progressive grip of the demon over your human self.

These transformations are not only aesthetic, but but have also an impact on your equipment.

When you reach a certain point on the demonic path, your character begins to grow horns, prevent him from wearing a helmet.

Further away on the demonic path, your burning chest will worn out your chest piece of armor… while this will have a negative impact on your defense, keep in mind your offensive potential will be bolstered!

Choosing to take the demon path is not a decision to take lightly. It is very costly, yet involves some powerful new abilities!

Impact on the skills

The combat in Bound by Flame offers various ways to destroy your opponents, and your choices throughout the story have a strong impact on your combat style!

Letting the demon take possession of you will grant you its powers, transforming you into a reckless pyromancer with a large panel of fire spells

But this newfound strength comes at the price of defense, which will be reduced in effectiveness, as your armor, not fully covering your body anymore, leaves you more vulnerable to physical attacks.

Since you are now also partly a creature of fire, you will be more vulnerable to frost elemental damage.

The constant inner battle between Vulcan and his demon is a key element of the story and gameplay of Bound by Flame.

It will deeply influence your experience of the game by altering how the story unfolds, the visual appearance of your character, and your gameplay in the numerous aggressive encounters that you will meet in Vertiel!

Mathras is certainly no ordinary undead. Educated and refined, he lived before the time of the Lords of Ice, even before any known civilization.

Sadly for him, Mathras does not have enough time to explain that he's not even remotely allied with the Deadarmy before humans try to murder him.

He will join the cause of the hero out of simple curiosity, or perhaps fun, but beware: on the battlefield, Mathras casts lethal spells on his enemies, controlling their minds and transforming them into allies during the fight.

After all, Mathras has had the last 3,000 years to perfect the art of jousting and fighting, skills he applies equally as well through words as well as magic.

Randval is a warrior, last survivor of an ancient clan that was decimated by the Deadarmy. He now lives with the burden of regaining the lost honor of his clan, or to die trying.

According to his strict code of honor, Randval protects the village of Valvenor, waiting for an opportunity to claim this honor back.

His meeting with the Hero of Bound by Flame will give Randval this opportunity he was longing for. The seemingly impossible quest the Hero has thrown himself in is an epic, heroic and desperate goal definitely worthy of the code of honor of Randval’s clan.

Randval is an extremely disciplined fighter, who is ready to sacrifice his life if it is necessary. He considers the demonic powers of the hero as a mean to fight the Ice Lords.

On the battlefield, he will rush into the enemies, taunting them to get their attention and have them focus their attacks on him, giving his allies freedom of movement and relative safety to attack.

In Bound by Flame, the craft system has an instrumental role. You’ll need it to advance in your journey, as it provides useful upgrades to your character, while also having a strong aesthetic aspect.

Throughout your quest, you will loot various materials and components hidden in chests or from the corpses of your dead enemies. These are the basic components to craft weapons, armors, traps, ammunition or potions that you will need to progress in the game.

Don’t underestimate the usefulness of crafting in Bound by Flame: some of the best pieces of equipment are crafted!

The character visual customization is very deep: some pieces of armor have up to 3 slots that can be upgraded, with a direct impact on your character’s appearance.

Crafting will transform your hero in a killing machine, while making you look a bada**!

CRAFTING COMPONENTS

In Bound by Flame, the opportunities to gather materials for crafting are many. Killing monsters, looting chests and coffins, or completing quests are all good means to collect various components.

There are a lot of crafting resources, and each of them has several quality levels:

Metal (raw, refined…)

Steel

Gemstone

Bones

Leather

Blood

Hearth dust

etc…

Most of these materials can have a tainted variant, implying various new crafting attributes.

While low quality components are very common, you will need to gather a large amount of high quality materials to craft the best weapons and armors.

Fortunately, low quality components may be used also to create higher quality materials, at the cost of quantity.

For instance, 3 coins let you craft a piece of raw metal, and 4 raw metal pieces will let you craft a piece of refined metal!

Another source of crafting materials will come from recycling your unwanted pieces of equipment.

When you find a new armor with better stats, you might want to dismantle the old one, in order to get some components back!

CRAFTING TALENTS

As crafting is a key element in Bound by Flame, you will have the opportunity to specialize your character for it.                                           

An entire list of talents are dedicated to enhance your efficiency in crafting.

As a master in craftmanship, you consume less materials and create more products. You can even boost the amount of loot you find in chests and on corpses! 

You cannot carry an unlimited number of equipment. If you reach the weight limit, it affects your movements. But several skills allow the hero to push the limits of their bag capacity, letting you carry more weapons, armor, and priced materials!

You can also enhance your recycling skills to optimize this process.

And all this work will pay off, when you will proudly display your shiny new armor!

UTILITY CRAFTING

Vulcan is a resourceful mercenary who uses explosive traps, crossbows (ammunition!) and potions.

These consumables are not unlimited, and every now and then, you will need to craft more of them to replenish your stock. Use these consumables sparingly, or you will chew on your materials like there’s no tomorrow!

ARMOR AND WEAPON CRAFTING

Bound by Flame invites you to create and customize your pieces of equipment at an incredibly deep level!

Vulcan can wear 4 pieces of armor: chest, gloves, boots and helmet. Each of them can be customized to add various bonuses according to your gameplay style.

Are you an aggressive warrior who likes to charge in the midst of battle? Opt for pure damage boost for your weapons and physical resistance for your armor!

You struggle a lot against enemies dealing magic damage? Increase your magic resistance!

Each of these options has a direct impact on the look of your character!

Just like armor, the variety of crafting options for weapons is huge.

You can customize the guard and the pommel of your blades, your war hammers, and axes. Find the one that suits you!

And join the battle with the weapon and the armor you created!

Everything is at your disposal to customize your character in every detail, while giving you the edge you need to overcome the dangerous creatures roaming Vertiel!

Shy yet ingenuous and combative, the wizard Sybil is the daughter of the leader of the Order of the Red Scholars.

Growing up under the cover of the order, she traveled around the world to gather and centralize knowledge of all kind.

On the battlefield, you can count on her offensive powers to fight your enemies, but she is also specialized in the art of healing, magically tending to your wounds in the heat of battle.

Diplomatic, very smart, Sybil is pushed by her curiosity to join the Hero in his quest.

She will help him to understand his new demonic inner self, and is the first to worry about the consequences the extensive use of his demonic powers may involve.

Rhelmar is an Elf with his own sense of justice. Alas, it rarely fits the definition the rest of the world gives to ‘justice’!

A former outlaw, Rhelmar rejects the Elves' neutral state in the ongoing conflict, and takes and active part in the fight against the Deadarmy.

Considered a pariah amongst his people, Rhelmar is determined to act as he feels right, even if it implies risking his own life.

On the battlefield, he's an elite archer who can inflict lethal damage to his opponents from range… but he is also more than able with a dagger, when close range fights are inevitable.

Fierce and powerful, nothing will stop the mysterious witch Edwen from getting what she wants.

She joins the hero to assist him in his quest, but seems to be guided by an all too personal thirst for vengeance.

In her opinion, the hero’s demonic influence is a mean to reach his goals, and he should embrace it to harness its powers.

She might become your best ally in the looming battle… if you bow to her will, that is.

The countryside is not safe for a lone man…

Golems and Ice Spirit hang around the caves of Vertiel.

Even if we are deep into development at the moment, we’d like to take a little time to introduce some of the creatures roaming the world of Bound by Flame.

The bestiary is an important aspect of the game, and this is why we've created these strange, nasty swamp creatures!

Today, we invite you to discover how Roy Temperance was created!

The design of a hero is always difficult, but we finalized Roy's face design pretty fast.

We took inspiration from Corto Maltese, the hero of Hugo Pratt's comic book series, as well as Roy Batti, the character played by Rutger Hauer in Blade Runner.
