In Dylan’s dreams, every night he sees the image of the same person, whose eyes, face, and figure he will never forget, whose death he himself caused. He had long since lost track of days and weeks; the seasons followed one another, and the guilt for the crime he had committed dragged him down to the bottom of his life with renewed vigor each day, as yet another hopeless winter gave way to spring. He, Hize himself, appeared to Dylan in a dream, foreshadowing an equally hopeless future, a warm spring, reminding him of a past to which Dylan is now connected only by memories and the gradually worsening state of his body, spirit, and mind.
