I think I have to go with forest, simply because I've never been to the seaside often enough to truly have....claimed it as my own. If that makes any sense whatsoever. Meanwhile, I have often gone walking in forests—sometimes as planned excursions, sometimes more just when I have to get outside. Away from people, away from noise. One thing that I find particularly attractive is getting to choose if I’m alone or not. Sometimes I prefer or even need solitude—but sometimes I prefer companionship. Honestly, hiking’s one of those activities that can be done with as many or as little people as possible. Except zero people, of course.
What's your favorite article of clothing that you own?
I have a very old, very soft t-shirt back from a run that I did a long time ago. It’s a little bit too big on me, and it’s splattered with paint. It might sound silly, but I always feel so comfortable whenever I wear it. I know where each splatter of paint came from, each of them a memory that lives inside of the reds, the blues, the yellows. I can recall just from one glance the way the paint smelled, the crunch of the plastic wrap under my feet. It’s not really “suitable” for being in public so I usually just wear it if I know I’m not planning on being anywhere—days where I just do chores, while sleeping. Things like that.
What is your favorite flower?
Sunflowers. There’s something so inherently cheerful about them. And of the paintings with flowers that Sarah makes, the ones with sunflowers are always my favorite. The dark brown centers of the flowers—they remind me of her eyes. And the bright yellow makes me think of the sound of her laughter.
