I’m posting Jonathan Roxmouth’s post responding to Instagram harassment he’s been enduring, but I’m not including the harasser’s name or instagram, as she is very likely seriously mentally ill. If someone replies to you making allegations about him, just block them. Please don’t respond their atrocious behaviour by dog-piling or attacking them back (this can in fact be very dangerous if mental illness is a factor). But do let Jonathan know he’s supported if you’re on Insta! 

This is really disturbing and screwed up, and I feel terrible for Jonathan Roxmouth.

I mean, it is actually very entitled to expect some you’re a fan of to answer a DM at all - they aren’t obliged to, they may be flooded with tons of messages every day! And it feels great if they do, but that doesn’t mean you’re their special best friend or that they owe you anything, including any further conversation.

A number of the classic Phantoms had stalkers who’d follow them home, which is a different kind of scary; but today with social media, people can go on campaigns of extended harassment. Something similar happened to one of my favourite Phantoms some 15 years ago, but at least the internet was smaller then. (Amongst his stalker’s convictions where that he was looking at her directly 20 rows back in the audience and making eye contact with her when he sang Music of the Night… uh, no.)

I think when we feel so passionately about someone’s performance of a character we also feel passionately about, we naturally project a lot on to them, and seeing them at the stage door, or getting personal contact with them, is thrilling. But some people then project massively more personal friendship or an intense personal connection that doesn’t exist, and turn very nasty when they feel rejected.

I strongly don’t think people should contact this woman, as trying to reason with people like that generally goes nowhere and increases their anger and hostility. Also when this kind of thing comes from serious mental illness, people don’t always have any level of real control over their own actions. Please do not send her messages or harass her back.
