Come gather ’round people Wherever you roam And admit that the waters Around you have grown And accept it that soon You’ll be drenched to the bone If your time to you is worth savin’ Then you better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone For the times they are a-changin'
The house relies on the hill.

A Year
If I lived for only a year
I would help you steal the salt from the sea.
I would stare into soft-edged mornings with you
And wonder where the edge of the night lies--
If it meets at the ends, or if it stretches only as far
As the back of my hand to yours.
I think of the obituaries as the lottery. Sooner or later, someone I hate is going to be in there.
A construction worker I overheard today.

A Symphony in Oxygen (2010)
We talked in music. In the middle of the night, when I’d fall asleep to the highest string of his beaten-up guitar quivering in the dark, he’d draw mirages behind my eyes. I’d hear the undertones of minor chords under whispered dialogue, melody layered under melody.
I knew him by the heaviness of his footsteps, the depth of his breathing, the curve of his spine behind mine. He was more natural than air. There were nights when he didn’t come home and I didn’t sleep at all. I don’t know what bound me to him, what made me lay awake for hours waiting to feel his side of the pillow cave in.
I sought him out in the space between stars. I didn’t know it, but I loved him. I didn’t know what love was, so I mistook it for gravity. I fell, and I kept falling, right on through the other side of the world and out into space forever.
As I'm sure I've told you, I'll love you for love. As long as you don't bomb downtown Cincinnati, I'll be there.
