Pondering my orbs.
wattpad really gave ao3 a huge free promo with their new policy update that makes things even worse for their users. so to all the people who are now moving to ao3 due to thisβ¦
welcome! here are what you need to know about ao3 and how itβs the complete opposite of wattpad
trigger warning for the mention of contents that are allowed on ao3 that can be triggering to some.
ao3 is a non-profit organization. itβs run by fans (people like you and me), for fans.
fans donate to the site on their own free will to keep the site up and running smoothly.
ao3 is not a social media. it is an archive.
ao3 doesnβt have ads. it doesnβt have algorithms. it doesnβt have βgoing viral.β
everything is endlessly free on ao3. there is no βao3 premium.β you will never see a single ad on ao3, and you can download as many fics as you want to read offline for free.
ao3 doesnβt have an app. and ao3 doesnβt need an app. any βao3 appsβ you see are third-party apps and are not affiliated with ao3, so be careful giving these shady apps your login infos or other personal information.
ao3 was built with the main purpose to 1.) be completely against censorship and 2.) host fics that are banned on other platforms like wattpad.
the reason ao3 doesnβt have an app is because for it to have its own app, appstore and google play store will have to approve it first. and due to the contents ao3 allow, chances are that it wonβt get approved. which is actually a good thing. it doesnβt need an app. it works more than fine without an app.
on ao3, every single thing is allowed as long as it is fanfic or fan work (original works, fan art and video edits count as fan works, but if you want to post a video edits on ao3, you will have to post it elsewhere and then link it back to ao3 β ao3 cannot host video edits on its platform due to copyright issues)
by every single thing that is fanfic, I mean every single thing:
the filthiest smut without plot that is written purely for sexual pleasure is allowed. it has its own canonical tag called βplot what plot, porn without plot.β
fics that focus on non-consensual sexual intercourse are allowed, doesnβt matter if the fics glorify or romanticize the act, doesnβt matter if theyβre written as kinks. they have their own canonical tag called βrape/non-con.β
fics about characters who are minors are allowed, even if theyβre portrayed in a sexual manner, even if theyβre non-consensual sexual intercourse. even if the minor characters are romantically and/or sexually involved with characters who are adults. even if they fics are written in ways that glorify and/or romanticize the thing. they have their own canonical tag called βunderage sex.β
fics about incest are allowed. doesnβt matter if they glorify or romanticize the relationship. they have their own canonically tag called βincest.β fun fact: the first ever fic that was posted on ao3 was a fic about an incest ship from supernatural.
fics about self-harm and suicide are allowed. doesnβt matter if they glorify or romanticize the act. they have their own canonical tags called βself-harmβ and βsuicideβ also βsuicidal ideationβ, βsuicide attemptβ, βimplied/referenced suicideβ, etc.
fics about violence and gore are allowed, even if they were written for the sake of shock value. they have their own canonical tag called βviolenceβ, βblood and goreβ, βblood and injuriesβ, etc.
rpf is also allowed. doesnβt matter if the content of the fics are dark and taboo. theyβre treated the same way as any other fics.
every single dark and taboo fic you can think of is allowed. and it has its own canonical tag. because it is the main reason why ao3 was created in the first place.
βbut what do I do if I donβt wanna see fics about xyz?β you can filter out any specific tag, character and/or pairing you want.
βwhat do I do if I wanna find fics about xyz?β you can search for any specific tag, character and/or pairing you want.
a lot of ao3 users rely on tags to search for specific tags, pairings, characters they want. they also rely on tags to filter out and exclude specific tags, pairings, and characters that they donβt want to see.
ao3βs tagging system is by far the most efficient one Iβve ever seen.
on ao3, our main principles are βdonβt like donβt readβ β which means YOU have a responsibility to curate your own internet experience. yes, ao3 allows all kind of messed up fics, but they also allow you the ability to NOT see anything you donβt want to see, by filtering out specific fics, pairings and/or characters.
no. you cannot harass authors who write about things that disgust you. you can and will be reported for harassment, and ao3 takes harassment very seriously. they will not take your side. because fucked up fics are allowed on ao3βfucked up fics are the main reason ao3 was createdβwhereas harassment is a direct violation of their terms of service.
ao3 is a house of the freaks and the perverts (affectionate). you ARE in the house of the freaks and the perverts. so donβt think about harassing or being rude to the freaks and the perverts who built this anti-censorship house and are kind enough to let you in.
ao3 is proship, profic, and anti-censorship.
any writer can write whatever they want, however they want. the only etiquette is that you tag your stuff properly and accurately
mistagging for visibility is heavily frowned upon here, and it wonβt get your works more views. people will either block or report you if you deliberately mistag things with the purpose of getting your fic more views. as Iβve said before, ao3 is an archive. itβs not a social media. it doesnβt have algorithms or going viral.
if you come across a fic that has the tag βcreator chose not to use archive warningsβ it means the fic may or may not contain topics that can be triggering, but the author wonβt tell you what these topics are, or if there are any at all. so proceed at your own risk.
that said, because ao3 is a non-profit site that hosts millions of works about othersβ copyrighted characters, you CANNOT link a monetization platform anywhere on ao3, you CANNOT mention any donation, commissionβor anything that involves moneyβanywhere on ao3. no, you cannot imply donation, commission, or anything that involves money either. that is against their terms of service.
and because ao3 is a place for fanworks, the βwork sectionβ of your post has to actually be fanwork (fanfic, original work, fan art, link to a video edit count as fanwork). anything that isnβt fanwork is not allowed.
you cannot post something on ao3 that is not fanwork. so no political statement, no call-out post, no βIβm looking for fics about xyzβ.
ao3 is anti censorship as long as what you post is actually fanwork and as long as you donβt violate their terms of service that Iβve mentioned above.
ao3 has their own team of lawyers to protect them, their users, and every fanwork that is posted on their platform.
last but not least, donβt write directly onto ao3. write and store your works elsewhere before copy and paste them onto ao3 once theyβre ready to post!! because ao3 does NOT autosave drafts for you, you risk losing everything youβve typed if thereβs a glitch, if the site crashes or if your device unexpectedly shuts down for whatever reason.
thatβs all for now. have fun and happy writing/reading!
Ad blocking/reporting should have some sort of an "I never want to see this fucking ad again and if you fail me and show it to me again I will track down where you live and fucking kill you" option.

World Heritage Post
Someone hacked into and deleted my Tumblr while I was using it. All of my posts gained red text and the letters swirled around like a tornado before being scattered off screen. Presumably for others to use in their text posts

My boss has a new boss who's been dropping in to check on how different sites are doing and I keep introducing her to the clients by going "This is Hank. Hank, this is my boss's boss, she's very important, please tell her nice things about me" and that's my big Autistic secret to professional networking. Letting them think you're funny
Other fun Professional Hacks:
"Networking" doesn't have to feel like one big huge façade of manipulation and lies. You just find people you like. The things you talk about don't even have to be related, you just gotta find people who you like working with who you might reach out to for questions or projects later.
You don't need to look professional and respectable or like a "real" adult. I like to just show up and make it clear I'm receptive to jokes and quirks and weird ideas, and the people who vibe with that usually come to me.
Introduce people you like to other people you like. Talk them up. You can tell your boss "This is Mike he kicks ass, he knows everything about this place, if you want to know something talk to him, if he ever quits we're stealing him"
I found can't think of a polite or socially normal way to say something, sometimes you can just say it like "I don't know if this is dumb or not but I don't know anything about this. Can you explain what you mean?", or "I was taught something different. Should I change how I've been doing it?". I've never had a negative reaction to this.
When in doubt, ask a weird question. "What's your favorite dessert food" is a p good one. Sometimes folks think I'm childish but at least they know what they're getting into and they know I'm not judging them.
Sometimes when higher-ups approach me with a stiff upper lip I'll test the waters with a "is your job as insane as it sounds" or something similar to remind them that I, a worker performing a role, and speaking to them, a worker performing a role. If they give a stiff and measured answer I stay distant and professional. If their performance cracks and their tone changes or they smile or laugh or give a funny reply I know I can relax and joke a bit too.
I still don't enjoy business stuff outside of the most basic day to day duties of my job and conventions n shit are still pretty draining but learning that other people are also following a script and the performance has room for "yes-and" type improv has helped a lot
Me and my girlfriend did a lil photo shoot in our regalia back in December
Oh weβre engaged now btw π
Queer joy detected!
one time i was making potato soup and i needed broth for it but i was out of broth. but in my dog food cabinet there was a carton of chicken broth that i had bought for my dog. now the box did say HUMAN GRADE and the ingredients were just bog standard chicken broth. it did say something about joint health for dogs on there. but the ingredients were normal. i even compared the ingredients list to some normal person broth and they were the same. so i did put dog broth in that soup and it did taste completely normal. but i did use the dog broth.
"Write character relationships that are normal" WRONG β CODEPENDENCY BEAM π₯π₯π₯π₯π₯π₯π₯π₯π₯π₯π₯
I need people w ovaries who are on t to know that if your dr has tried to adjust your dose 100x and you can't figure out why you're still dealing with things like cyclcal symptoms of PMS or PMDD, cramps, and even spotting or bleeding, it's because 1/3 of people continue to have cycles and ovulate on t. Hormonal contraceptives can offer relief. This is also why t is not a method of contraception, so if you can get pregnant and don't want to be, then you need to use another method. It is safe to use contraceptives on t. They will not interfere with your HRT.
This is especially important information for folks who do not want a hysterectomy! Hysterectomy without oophorectomy (removing ovaries) does not stop hormonal cycles, either! Drs will often recommend a hysterectomy without knowing that a significant percentage of people still ovulate on t and that it can often be managed w contraceptives!
I have personally watched multiple people suffer from this issue for years without a single dr offering to try contraceptives and only recommending hysto, and some of these people went through with it and still suffered from the same issue afterward. You may never be offered other options without asking. People w ovaries who are on t need to know this.

The core conceit of Lord of the Rings is pretty funny. You are a twenty three year old in a suburb of Maine. The little bracelet in your grandpaβs attic has an inscription on it that is the password to the worldβs entire nuclear arsenal. It is up to you to walk to the only hydraulic press in the world, located in Arizona, before the FBI finds the bracelet, kills you, and enslaves the suburb of Maine you currently live in
Also the 90-year old hobo that your grandpa beat in a rap battle for possession of the bracelet while hiding from the Romanian secret police really loved the bracelet because it was coated in small amounts of LSD and tried to hunt and kill your grandpa to get it back. He was then apprehended by the FBI and instantly gave them your grandpaβs address. Seal Team Six is about to break down your door and shoot you, says your local congressman who can also do cool magic tricks
There's a guy in NY who MIGHT be capable of destroying the codes but won't coz he simply wants to spend time with his wife. So it's up to your grandpa's old friend in rural Ohio to get you the friends capable of finishing the task.
And we must not, at any point, remember the existence of aircraft and ask aloud why we can't just fly to Arizona
We can't use aircraft because the fbi has access to all the flight data how many times do we need to go over this
Doctors are like: ughhhhh. You're confusing. Come back if you die
