The myth of âThe gift of submissionâ
Letâs retire one of the most romanticized phrases in BDSM.
âSubmission is a gift.â
Is it? Then answer me this.
If submission is a giftâŚWhy do we endlessly talk about a Dominant earning submissionâŚbut almost never about a submissive earning Dominance?
Funny how that works.
Apparently only one side has something that needs to be earned.
Letâs be honest.
Submission isnât a gift. Itâs an investment.
And so is Dominance.
The difference is that weâve convinced ourselves only one side must continually justify receiving it.
People love saying, â a Dominant has to earn submission.â
Good. They should.
Now finish the thought.
A submissive has to earn Dominance too.
Not once.
Not during negotiation.
Not after receiving a collar.
Every single day.
Because hereâs a question nobody seems willing to answer: Why should a Dominant continue investing their leadership in someone who no longer invests in the dynamic?
Dominance isnât free.
It costs.
It costs patience.
Time.
Restraint.
Responsibility.
Emotional labour.
Decision-making.
Protection.
Consistency.
Sometimes sleep.
Sometimes peace.
Sometimes carrying someone elseâs emotional weight while quietly carrying your own.
Why should that investment be automatic?
Yet somehowâŚModern BDSM increasingly treats Dominance as an obligation.
The Dominant must regulate.
The Dominant must notice every emotional shift.
The Dominant must recognize trauma.
Prevent dependency.
Maintain communication.
Lead perfectly.
Protect continuously.
Recover every mistake.
Carry the relationship.
And if the dynamic fails?
Look at the Dominant.
MeanwhileâŚWhat exactly is expected of the submissive?
ApparentlyâŚExist.
Letâs stop pretending thatâs equality. Because it isnât. Itâs entitlement wearing the language of submission.
Hereâs another uncomfortable truth.
Submission doesnât make someone virtuous.
Submissives lie.
Submissives manipulate.
Submissives avoid accountability.
Submissives violate agreements.
Submissives betray trust.
Submissives weaponize vulnerability.
Being submissive doesnât magically make someone emotionally mature.
It simply describes how they choose to exchange power. Nothing more.
And hereâs where the entire âgiftâ argument falls apart.
Submission can be withdrawn.
Everyone agrees with that. Good.
Then answer this. Why canât Dominance be withdrawn too?
If respect disappearsâŚ
If honesty disappearsâŚ
If trust disappearsâŚ
If effort disappearsâŚ
Why should leadership remain?
Why is one side expected to keep proving themselves long after the other has stopped trying?
No one deserves meaningful submission because they call themselves a Dominant.
Agreed.
But no one deserves meaningful Dominance simply because they identify as submissive.
That shouldnât be controversial.
It should be obvious.
The healthiest dynamics Iâve ever witnessed werenât built on gifts.
They were built on reciprocity.
Respect earned respect.
Trust earned trust.
Leadership inspired submission.
Submission inspired leadership.
Both people continually gave the other a reason to keep investing.
So perhaps weâve been repeating the wrong phrase all along.
Submission isnât a gift.
Dominance isnât a gift.
They are reciprocal investments.
Stop treating one as though it must endlessly prove its worth while the other is simply entitled to receive.
Because neither survives entitlement. Neither is owed. And neither is unconditional.
The strongest dynamics arenât built on one person endlessly earning. Theyâre built on two people who never stop earning each other.
Every.
Single.
Day.
