𝙼𝙰𝚈𝙱𝙴   𝙸𝚃'𝚂   𝙸𝙼𝙿𝚁𝙾𝙿𝙴𝚁 .               inside   the   castle,   there’s   a   tantrum   being   thrown   that   rivals   the   ones   her   sisters   used   to   toss   and   shriek   when   they   were   younger.   except   this   tantrum   is   from   a   fully   grown,   adult   man,   and   sophie   feels   not   an   ounce   of   remorse   which   is   maybe   the   most   improper   aspect   (   she’ll   never   admit   ).   she   sniffs,   feels   the   breeze   blow   her   skirts   around   her   ankles   and   pretends   to   be   oblivious   and   unaffected.   if   the   slime   makes   an   appearance,   that’s   when   she’ll   finally   step   in   and   bottle   it   up   before   it   can   extinguish   poor   calcifer   again.   for   now,   sophie,   with   her   best   posture   and   her   chin   up,   links   her   arm   with   her   apprentice.   she’s   been   by   her   side   long   enough   now   to   be   used   to   this.          ❛      i   only   cleaned   his   room.   it   was   worse   than   usual,   i   was   almost   certain   there   were   piles   that   would   come   alive   and   eat   me   every   time   i   walked   past.   how   about   we   take   a   walk ?      ❜

𝚂𝚃𝙰𝚁𝙻𝙸𝙶𝙷𝚃 .          that’s   what   she’d   been   told.   her   lightened   hair   was   surely   a   unique   color.   she   received   many   questions   and   comments   on   it,   weekly   and   sometimes   daily.   it   was   a   contrast   to   what   it   used   to   be,   but   felt   immeasurably   sophie.   she   basked   in   the   glow   of   it,   as   though   it   had,   in   fact,   come   from   starlight.   rose   rises   in   her   fair   cheeks,   for   even   now,   she’s   unused   to   compliments.   especially   ones   expressed   with   such   sudden   sincerity.          ❛      thank   you,   i   think   so   too.      ❜          smile   blooms,   like   a   rose   proudly   unfurled,   and   she   extends   her   hand.   conjuring   was   not   quite   her   strong   suit,   but   this   was   a   simple   enough   task.   the   form   of   a   peony   spread   from   her   palm.          ❛      for   you,   because   that   was   very   sweet.   and   if   i   complimented   you   in   return   as   i   wished,   i   worry   it   would   be   received   as   empty   and   out   of   obligation,   when   you   really   are   very   pretty.      ❜

𝚂𝙷𝙴'𝚂   𝙽𝙾𝚃   𝚆𝚁𝙾𝙽𝙶 .          shambles   is   the   closest   word   she   can   think   to   describe   what   stands   before   them.   well,   stood.   there’s   nothing   really   standing   anymore,   by   the   look   of   it.   deserted,   crumbling,   fallen   away.   some   places,   when   they   fade,   have   memory   etched   into   surroundings.   a   feeling   of   history,   at   the   very   least.   where   you   could   envision   what   it   had   once   looked   like   at   its   peak,   perhaps   full   of   women   in   exuberant   gowns   and   men   in   their   sharp,   ostentatious   suits.   this   can   barely   be   called   ruins   by   this   mess.   incredibly   . . .   underwhelming.   remaining   stone   is   cool   under   her   touch,   and,   like   everything   else   here,   falls   to   pieces.   sophie   sighs   and   dusts   her   hands.          ❛      that’s   what   happens   when   you   build   everything   from   illusion.   when   it   falls,   there’s   nothing   to   sustain   the   image.      ❜          yet,   it’s   certainly   vapid   appearance   made   it   perhaps   a   clever   hiding   place.   few   would   look   at   the   mess   twice   and   think   there   was   something   valuable   within.
