Hey. Sophie? I’m bored, wanna learn how to stab someone properly?
- @auburn-talle-mesmer
It takes a moment for Sophie to comprehend what’s happening. This isn’t out of character for Auburn, from what she knows, she’s just not used to Auburn being at Havenfield yet. It’s only been about a day in her temporary stay with the Ruewens and two have only really interacted during meals.
Yeah, sure
Sophie gets out of bed setting her book down on her nightstand.
Sophie normally just uses Sandor’s weapons when he helps her train but he’s busy with Edaline right now and she doesn’t keep weapons on her at home.
I’ll need one.
Sophie smiles as she watches how excited Auburn is. She grabs a shirt that she normally trains in and pulls it on over the tank top she already had on. Aside from that she pulled on her training boots.
I’ll grab you one. I think you should start with something in the middle. You don’t want to have to get too close to your enemies but you also want the blade throwable in case you get in that situation.
*She rushes off for a moment, returning with two wickedly sharp blades. Fully stepping into Sophie’s room, she holds one out to her.
Sophie finally gets a look at what Auburn is wearing. Black leggings paired with a ruby red tunic. She clearly has a favorite color.*
Sophie takes the black from Auburn making sure to hold it carefully enough to not hurt herself of accidentally hit anything around her. Then she follows Auburn out of her room.
*She leads Sophie to the field near the Panakes tree, wanting to be near the healing blossoms just in case. She didn’t expect anything bad to happen, but it never hurt to be prepared. There was a training dummy with quite a few slashes and holes already in it standing in the field.*
Okay. Show me how you would hold the knife to stab.
Sophie hold her knife out in front of her in a front-hold. This was probably the easiest way to stab but it also wouldn’t work in a lot of situations especially with how intense fighting normally is.
Even though her knife hold is simple she makes sure to be in the proper stance Sandor had taught her.
Sophie nods at what Auburn says then takes a deep breath. When she stabs the dummy she steps forward into the attack but it lands a little off where she aimed due to the new grip she has on the knife. Once the knife is embedded in the dummy’s stomach Sophie pauses and looks over her shoulder at Auburn.
That’s also fine. But it won’t hold up in a real fight, not when your target needs to be exact. Here, watch what I do.
*Auburn grabs her own knife and makes a stabbing motion. She’s fast, decisive. She put another hole directly into the dummy’s chest.*
Try again. I know what you’re trying to do, but you’re smaller than a goblin, so their fighting techniques won’t work as well for you. Do what I do and you’ll have a real chance of surviving a proper fight.
Again, Sophie stabs the training dummy, this time quicker with more force, similar to Auburn. The attack isn’t perfect and is still slightly off her mark but the dagger does get imbedded deeper into the dummy’s stomach.
You’re getting better. But your aim is still off. Here, let me-
*Auburn grabs Sophie’s wrist, guiding her through the motion until she’s confident Sophie can hit her mark.*
There. Now stab. And commit, Soph. Don’t be afraid. The dummy can’t feel pain, and if you ever have to do this against a real enemy, well, you’ll want them to feel it.
Sophie states at the point she is trying to hit then lunges forward putting force behind her attack. This time she hits her mark with enough energy to get her blade deep into the body of the training dummy.
Pride swells in Sophie’s chest at how well this attempt went. It probably wasn’t perfect but she clearly did better than every other time she tried. She looks over to Auburn grinning.
Good. See, you’ve just got to be a bit ruthless. I can give you a lesson, if you want.
But first, I think you’re ready. Fight me. Dagger on dagger. It won’t be a real fight, of course. Mr Ruewen would kill me if I actually hurt his daughter. But sparring can be good for you.
*She lifts her own blade with ease. She looks…eager, maybe.*
Sophie also raises her dagger but more tentatively. Sandor refuses to spar with her because of how easy it would be for him to accidentally hurt her and aside from that she doesn’t get many chances with others.
She takes a deep breath and waits. Auburn seems excited, if Sophie just waits for a bit she’ll attack first.
Sophie, who had flinched back trying to avoid Auburn, returns to the correct fighting stance. Even after what Auburn said she still stands there for longer than she probably should.
She doesn’t want to accidentally hurt Auburn, even knowing that she’ll probably not land a singular hit on her today. Holding a knife is like being an Inflictor, she realizes. It’s a weapon and she could hurt someone which is exactly why she’s training now and why she practices Inflicting. So she doesn’t hurt anyone accidentally and can attack more effectively when she has to.
Holding onto that though she lunges forward aiming her blade at Auburn.
*She twists out of the way, using Sophie’s own momentum to send her falling to the floor.*
Better. But that time your stance was wobbly. You’re still afraid. And “afraid” isn’t going to serve you. Do you want to see what moving with real confidence feels like?
Sophie presses herself up off the ground to look at Auburn.
I guess..?
What is she talking about? Auburn’s a mesmer. Does she want to use her ability on Sophie? Grady probably wouldn’t approve of that, he always tries to be incredibly careful with how he uses his ability.
If it will actually help her though…it’s worth it.
*She smiles, a new light in her eyes. Focusing for a moment, she takes hold of Sophie’s mind. She guides her through a perfect manoeuvre, stopping her blade just short of her face. It’s flawless, smooth and confident.*
Even when she moved confidently she could feel what seemed like bugs under her skin. While under Auburns control she had no control over herself, it felt like her mind had been sectioned off from her body. Nothing she did was her own.
Yet, she did the best she has ever done in training, she can recognize that beyond the unnerving feeling of her body being out of her reach. If it helps her fight—helps her win—then she should use the tool she’s been given.
Sophie swallows and takes a slightly shaky breath.
*She guides Sophie through a more complicated move, parrying the blade with every strike. It’s fluid, like watching water flow through a maze. The movements feel effortless, but…not entirely natural.*
*She gets a bit carried away, the battle getting faster and faster until they’re both a blur of motion.*
Everything is moving too fast for Sophie to comprehend fully, she’s lost track of what her own body is doing. Steel hitting each other jars her arm but her body keeps pressing forward.
If her mind was walled off before it’s completely detached now. She’s not sure whose fault that is. Has Auburn put more pressure into her control or has Sophie’s mind stopped fighting.
She can only catch glimpses of Auburn in their whirlwind of motion. She looks happy.
*She’s enjoying herself a bit too much. The rush of a proper fight…it’s a high unlike any other. She doesn’t want to hurt anyone, that’s why she’s intentionally controlling both of them instead of just attacking. But she’s getting intense now.*
See what you can do, *she asks, a lilt in her voice,* when you stop holding yourself back?
There’s something in Auburns voice that makes Sophie uncomfortable. She’s acting off. Too excited for any sane elf while in a fight.
It’s to the point that Sophie is as terrified as she would be in a real fight with someone actually trying to kill her. Maybe that’s good, it’s practice. But she can’t take that kind of fear lying down, without fighting back in some capacity. Sophie knows she can’t fight physically in any way aside from what Auburn is forcing her to, so she falls back on what comes naturally to her and reaches out into Auburns mind.
*She can faintly feel Sophie slipping into her mind, but she pays it no attention. The thrill of the fight is too strong. Her control starts slipping mid strike, and theres a flash of something akin to fear in her eyes.*
*She’s breathing harder now, but now slowing down. The strain is getting to her, but her manic energy is keeping it at bay.*
Once has gotten a hold in Auburns mind she starts speaking to her telepathically. Her movements have already slowed so maybe talking to her can get her to stop fully.
Auburn? I think I’ve had enough training
Sophie feels bad. She hopes she didn’t scare her too bad, or make her too uncomfortable. They both know Sophie shouldn’t be anywhere near someone’s mind without consent.
As soon as Sophie can feel her body again she pulls out of Auburns mind. A sigh of relief naturally escapes her at being able to control herself fully again.
I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.
Sophie knows her worry shows in her creased brow as she takes a small step closer to Auburn with a a tentatively out.
Yeah. I’m okay. I’m just, uh, not used to Telepaths yet. Thank you, by the way. I don’t know what possessed me. I’m sorry too. How about we don’t tell anyone, yeah?
Probably for the best. I mean…I think we both broke a lot of rules.
Sophie pulls lightly at her eyelashes. Last time Sophie had tried to look into someone’s mind without permission it had ended horribly for her and her friends, best to not repeat that.
*She takes her knife back, petting the handle gently. Once they get back inside, she slips off for a moment to put them away before rejoining Sophie in the foyer.*
You first, *she says, a bit timid now that she’s inside, like something about is is throwing her off.*
Do you want help with anything? I can help. Please let me help.
*She’s pacing in place, toying with the hem of her tunic. She needs something to do with her hands. She’s acting very differently from how she was outside and from how you’re used to seeing her. The domesticity of it all was freaking her out.*
You can cut pieces of mallowmelt for us if you want. There should be knives in the drawer closest to you.
Sophie nods to a drawer at Auburns side before turning to gather the other utensils. Even though Sophie is glad to be back inside she can tell that Auburn is anxious, or something similar, but she’s not sure what to do. The mallowmelt should help. It always does.
*She pulls out a slender knife, finding the mallowmelt on the counter. She cuts two slices, her cuts exact. This is something she’s used to; it makes her feel…not safe, exactly, but something close. Familiarity. Her shoulders soften as she works.*
It’s been a while since I’ve actually had mallowmelt. *She admits.* Mother’s not a fan of elvin sweets and I’m not much of a baker myself.
Sophie sets the plates she grabbed down on the counter next to Auburn.
Lady Cadence and I are gonna have more words than normal in our next lesson.
Sophie shakes her head disappointedly. It was partially a joke but she’ll never understand anyone that doesn’t like mallowmelt. If Auburn hadn’t had any as a kid it explains a lot about her. Not that Sophie had had any either.
Hey. Sophie? I’m bored, wanna learn how to stab someone properly?

Hey. Sophie? I’m bored, wanna learn how to stab someone properly?

It takes a moment for Sophie to comprehend what’s happening. This isn’t out of character for Auburn, from what she knows, she’s just not used to Auburn being at Havenfield yet. It’s only been about a day in her temporary stay with the Ruewens and two have only really interacted during meals.

Hey.

Hey.
