This is a (mostly roleplay) blog for a Sonic the Hedgehog AU in which his role is swapped with an OC, Crystal, who I made up for a fanfic that I haven't finished writing. (Please feel free to ask about it, I will appreciate it greatly.) This AU was meant to be a bit of a thought experiment.
Clearly, something went wrong along the way and now I'm attached to it.
The current timeline can be found here.
Main Rules/Guidelines:
This AU is largely canon compliant, so please minimise the swearing. I know that certain characters are known to use the odd bad word (most notably Shadow) and that level is fine, but let's try and keep it at the same level as the games.
In the same vein as rule 1, please minimise the gore. While terrible injuries could and, I would argue, have been implied, we have not (as far as I recall) seen them in detail. I don't think we've even seen a drop of blood. That being said, I am not going to discourage you from permanent injuries - Crystal has lost her hearing to Metal Crystal. There is plenty of room for this.
Don't be rude ooc. I'll be fine with in-character trash talk, but I will not tolerate you being rude as a fellow person on the internet.
Ooc Discrimination - Homophobia, Transphobia, Racism etc - is NOT allowed.

Main Muses
Crystal
The main character of this AU is a light green dog - Border Collie/Golden Retriever cross - with deep blue eyes and the ability to influence emotions with her voice, as well as the ability to reach unnatural pitches with it. She wears a variety of outfits, often to convey a certain message, but is known to like the colour red.
She doesn't like talking much, as she can no longer hear, but is quite happy to just be in the same area as her friends.
Has a toy robot of herself that she was given by @lumencrest
She also takes care of several Chao, although which one is officially "hers" is anyone's guess.
Metal Crystal Mark 1 Copper the Metal Crystal
A former enemy of Crystal's, and still somewhat like her canon counterpart. (Metal Sonic.) Unlike him, she has gone rogue, and now works alongside Crystal. She actually plays some pretty important roles following the events of Forces. These include during the Metal Virus arc and Frontiers, as otherwise these plots have conflicts that may not be resolved.
She can struggle to interact with people, as she's still afraid that they may not trust her, but can be quite cheerful if you do interact with her. She doesn't know much about organic beings though.
She has an interdimensional sister in Kaia the Metal Amy Kai - @refractory-facsimile and a Chao named Kira.
Sonic the Merhog
You can actually interact with this AUs Sonic - provided you can survive underwater, that is. He's a merhog - a hedgehog with an aquatic lower half instead of terrestrial legs - and does still have the Super-Speed for which he is known in most universes. He has a Chao named Rascal
Metal Crystal (Mark 2)
In the current point in the timeline, Metal Crystal Mk2 is nothing but a menace. She has little thought and little feeling at this point, but can be sent into Combat Mode via a remote control Despite their barely developed personalities, she appears to be quite close to Metal Sonic.
Metal Sonic
A metallic counterpart to Sonic the Merhog, created around the same time as Metal Crystal Mk2. Like Metal Crystal Mk2, he has little thought and little feeling, and is sent into Combat Mode via the same remote control. Despite their barely developed personalities, he appears to be quite close to Metal Crystal Mk2.

Copper stumbled in, beaten half to scrap and seemingly trying to drag something - or heaven forbid, multiple things - through the door with her. Her eyes were their original red, a clear sign of distress by now.
Sis!
-I run up to help her, taking her by the shoulder worriedly.-
What happened to you? And what do you have? Amity, can you come help too?

Sis!
-I run up to help her, taking her by the shoulder worriedly.-
What happened to you? And what do you have? Amity, can you come help too?
That's amazing synergy! I'm actually kinda surprised my maker didn't try anything like that. Like with me and my bestie, or...or Metal Sonic and his little bro! Though maybe that's a blessing in disguise.
-I pull them in for a hug.-
Well, I hope I can meet more of the other units! Looks like even here, I have one heck of a growing family♡ Copper, Amity...now you guys.
-I blush a little as Crystal arrives, realizing...she's right, isn't she? Still holding my robo-nephews closely, I press my subscreen button to communicate with her.-
Gosh, that just makes this moment even sweeter. Hi Crystal! Sorry Copper isn't here, she had to go pick up a friend. How are ya?
"I'm pretty good, aside from turning on my laptop and finding out that A, Copper's been talking to some variation of Metal Sonic and B, her daughter's missing."
Apparently Copper had rerouted her chat through Crystals computer to avoid the Eggnet. It would seem that she didn't ask about this.
It all just kind of came up so suddenly. To my understanding I'm aunt to a lot of little robots now. Some of them even have names I would have come up with.
-I rub Buster's head.-
Kinda crazy, isn't it? So how is she doing over there with Metal So—
-I blink, suddenly parsing where Copper is.-
...Well. That's interesting. Didn't expect big bro to get involved.
I recognize the code. That version of him, Swift, is safe. I actually recently helped him reunite with his own Metal Tails, who we call Mach. Short for Machina. They've been staying together since.
So yeah, safe to say that that niece of mine is in good hands! If I had known, I'd have had big sis say hi to him for me!
Yeah. Maybe...maybe those two could also help us with some system updates. There's some security flaws with the pairing mode my nieces and nephews had, so we had to reboot Buster and Breeze one at a time. But Swift's very own lab is another great place to work on a fix for that stuff!
-I look happily at my metal nephews.-
We'll have you guys back at your best before we know it at this rate. How amazing is that?
Mhm. And hey, if any of you need somewhere to crash, I'm sure Amy would be happy to help work it out too. Or maybe Copper already talked to her about it, I dunno.
-I glance at Amity.-
How're you feeling, Amity? Any input on the subject? You've been pretty quiet.
She thought for a minute, trying to decide on one.
"I mean there's why you - no...I should run it by Copper first." She thought for a few more minutes before finding something more suitable. "Have you ever heard of Dark Gaia?"
"Legend tells of a beast locked within the planet itself," she began. "It was foretold that should it ever be released, it would wreak havoc on our world, bringing and age of total darkness and despair."
Bismuth seemed surprised, somehow. Copper simply hugged her sister - Bismuth just wanted her brothers by now, and they quickly huddled together in their own hug.
"As far as I can tell!" Coppers eyes had returned to their typical colour. Breeze and Buster seemed excited.
I can only imagine how scared you must've been, separated from your brothers like that. We were pretty worried too. It's good having the family together again, isn't it?
Hmm, well, it seems like pairing worked with no issues there, but would you guys like to keep chatting while we run a few system checks? We really should see if we need to work on a software patch or two for you and any other units we run across later. I even got a computer set up in here just for that.
Oh, the lag spike? I noticed that too. Seems like systems are otherwise running fine though... I'd guess we wanna look deeper to be sure there's nothing malicious hidden?
She nodded. "By all means. Although I wouldn't be surprised if it's just how I "programmed" her...I can't imagine Crystal really knows how to deal with telepathy."
"Just Bismuths," she confirmed with what seemed to almost be a sigh. "I didn't have much time or sanity, and I essentially just stuck a copy of Crystal in there."
Sure enough, Bismuth seemed to do a sort of "double take" every time one of the others addressed her directly. It seemed like she was getting better, but it was very clear she hadn't had the chance to do this often.
That would explain why she thought she was supposed to be deaf. I'm pretty sure my whole model line had at least some modifications to "help" us settle into life as Eggman Empire robots...
-I gently pat Bismuth's back and look to Copper with a gentler smile.-
...For what you could manage in that time, I think you do a way better job than my so-called "dad," big sis.
"I tried. I wanted her to be like me, almost. But with more autonomy and more support behind her. I don't know how I pulled this off, though," she noted, pointing at the screen.
Bismuths almost miniature Operating System was remarkably well formed, all things considered. Though it did seem to adapt itself, even as they watched it.
"I'll probably go back over it later. Even with this ability to adapt itself, it could do with a little streamlining. I could give her a proper Heads Up Display too," she noted. "I'm not sure she has one."
That'd be cool! Okay, then I think that'll be it from me.
-I close out of the windows we were using to examine the trio's programming and sigh in relief.-
Okay, you three, you're safe to disconnect! Wanna hang out on the couch, maybe? Something light like that? Taking it easy sounds like a good idea, and I'm sure you're all curious what else we've been up to.
They nodded, disconnecting. Copper was still monitoring the three, and noticed that Bismuth was beginning to more easily disconnect herself.
"We don't even really know what Mama was doing when she made us," she noted, signing with her words. Copper didn't seem surprised by how Bismuth referred to her - that was what Crystal called her own mother, after all.
-She even calls her Mama. How sweet! I beckon to my niece and nephews, sitting on the couch.-
Sounds like even she doesn't fully understand. It's basically a clean slate for all of us, better or worse. But I know the intent was good. She poured a lot of care into you three. I think Crystal can agree on that♡
-I cuddle with them on the couch, administering a boop for each of them.-
You have a wonderful mama who made and programmed a few sweetie bots all by herself... You have loving aunties who are happy to meet you and help clear things up... What's not to like? I'm happy for us. Even if we practically just met, I feel a strong connection between us. We're closer than I've ever known.
Copper seemed to disappear after a short time. It seemed like Breeze and Buster panicked, but Bismuth calmed them down. Even though the virus was long gone, she was still picking up the pieces .
