and for that matter why have i seen posts on here trying to rehabilitate the reputation of fucking 4chan. like i say this as a person of color tumblr is racist yes but it is not "incited multiple white supremacist mass shootings" levels of racist. it is not "started gamergate" levels of misogynist. what are we doing here. if you found community and support in 4chan good for you but everyone else has the right to feel uncomfortable that you found community among nazis and racists

something i'm enjoying in the early eps of pursuit of jade is yan zheng in the upper rooms, looking like a beautiful attic wife. pushing out the window shutters, gazing down below at changyu and her life and being so So normal. he's resting up and healing and immediately marrying himself into the family the first chance he gets. he's just an ordinary (bloody, battered) guy she found in the woods. who absolutely will stab and torture anyone at the slightest inclination that they'll make trouble for the fan family. no crazy eyes here. he's just puttering around the house in long draping robes, blood splattered and gently folorn looking. an utterly normal average guy

dear people with OCD: the next time you have spiraling & intrusive thoughts, what-ifs, or catastrophizing scenarios, I am sending a cardigan-wearing 46-year old NYU professor directly into your brain and he says "Aaaaand scene!!!" and he claps his hands slowly. and he says "Wow. Wow. Powerful stuff. Evocative imagery. A little bit post-modern, a little bit hysterical realism in the vein of Don Delilo but let's pause right here." and you will recognize your thoughts as a perplexing avant-garde film shown to an audience of 15 liberal arts students who are now trying to get a good grade and sleep with their professor.

Okay. For my money, the entire thesis of Chris Nolan’s 2026 film The Odyssey is that society chokes and sputters and dies when we abuse, ignore, or violate social norms like the laws of hospitality. That is not really what The Odyssey (the book/poem) is about, but I can clearly see why in the horror that is the 2020s, someone could read The Odyssey and go oh my god that’s a lot of bad dropping in. That’s a lot of bad visits. That’s a clear vision of how the loss of social norms and cohesion fucks you up and how war, literal, brutal war, is a terrible wound that destroys your humanity and your understanding of what civilization and society is. I don’t know that the iteration of Greek society that ultimately birthed the poem would agree with Nolan’s take, but I think this movie is quite ideologically coherent, that Nolan knew exactly what he was trying to say with each and every adaptational change, and I think he wasn’t nuts for using one of the most famous classical western civilization works as a way to make that argument.
