Sol's Soul Gem

Despite it being an old show, I still think it is best experienced with no spoilers, as I have in the past, and recommend that you watch it first, form your own opinion, and then come back to this blog.

I actually don't have a lot to say about chapters 4-6, I did wanna say there were some panels that were weirdly drawn, and that the fight between kyoko and sayaka was a bit confusing, but besides that the chapters were a pretty good adaptation.

They cut a few scenes/dialogue phrases out from the anime in the manga but I didn't mind it as much, most of them I didn't miss and I felt didn't affect the pacing that much, especially since it's a comic format

I read through chapters 1-3 of the madoka magica omnibus, and I have thoughts

Chapters 1-2 were very different from the show. Some differences I spotted were that the soul gems were necklaces, not rings, some small plot differences (mami was told about madoka and sayaka before hand) (homura never meets mami before the labyrinth scene in chapter 3), we get more details on mami's wish, through chapter 1 we hear characters thoughts, so on

I didn't like that Homura threatened Madoka in the first chapter, when Madoka held Kyubey. It felt out of character for me.

The first labyrinth wasn't anything extraordinary. I was scared that the manga wouldn't be able to adapt the feeling of the witches to comic in a way that conveyed the feeling that the labyrinths had on screen.

And then I read chapter 3

It was like watching episode 3 all over again. The page of the decapitation is absolutely insane. No words, they just made bebe terrifying for me again as someone who's seen the show way too many times.

The tone shift from getting to hear Madoka's silly thoughts to hearing them say the line "we understood nothing at all; not what it meant to pray for a miracle or the price of one" at the end of chapter 3 instead of beginning of chapter 4 as it would've been in the anime was a good choice for the manga. Overall, really enjoying it so far.

One final thought I will include is another thing I enjoyed: bebe's labyrinth and mami's use of magic are both really well depicted, especially mami's use of magic. The way Mami distorts reality anf transforms is really well drawn and I enjoyed it.
