Is that Danny Fenton with Mayor Masters at a table at the Nasty Burger? Almost looks like their on a date! ๐
Valerie had to do a double take when she had walked into her shift that evening.
Mayor Masters was her employer, sure. Both through ghost hunting and through the Nasty Burger. But she had never really seen him out of office. Especially not in this dump. Especially not with Danny Fenton of all people.
Maybe it shouldnโt be much of a surprise to her as it is. After all, it was no secret to anyone that the mayor and the Fentonโs had a connection. Valerie had even mentioned it once to Vlad about employing them. Heโd laughed so hard she thought he was going to have a stroke!
And maybe itโs not a surprise that theyโre there together. Itโs a surprise that Danny has that look in his eyes. The one he used to look at Sam and her with. His cute baby blues watching up at the mayor with wonder. Squinting every now and then and upturning with laughter as they talk. Itโs justโฆ surprising. Valerie thinks sheโs good at reading people. At least, she was good at reading Danny. And itโs so obvious that he is trying to flirt with the mayor.
Only thatโฆ the mayor doesnโt seem to have a problem with it. Politician grin covering his face as he leans in, snatching Dannyโs cup from his hand to sip at it himself. Danny shouts,
โHey!โ With a playfulness she doesnโt get to hear often anymore.
Valerie canโt help it. She moves closer to them. Her shift doesnโt actually start for another fifteen minutes, so she had time to spare. Only for a minute! Just to see what was going on here.
She ducks down at a booth behind the partition wall to them, ear up as she desperately wants to understand why theyโre here.
โHonestly Daniel, I canโt believe you convinced me that this was a good rendezvous spot.โ
โIโm tired of lobster,โ Danny says groans, โfancy places are boringโฆ and too far away.โ
โI told you I can always pick you up.โ
โAnd risk dad seeing you and trapping you in conversation?โ
โPass.โ They say in unison.
Rendezvous? This was a regular thing for them? Butโฆ why? Did Mr and Mrs Fenton not know about it? If she didnโt know any better she would think this is aโฆ
โYou could always come to my mansion.โ
Vlad never sounds like that. It makes her skin crawl a bit to hear it. Was the mayorโฆ hitting on Danny?
โOh and Iโm sure youโd let me leave afterwards.โ
Was Danny taking the bait? This was too weird. Was this a date? Or did they have the weirdest sense of humor between them.
โWould you want to? Honestly Daniel I donโt know if you can live in that house anymore.โ
โOh brother, here we go.โ
Valerie canโt help but whisper laugh.
โDonโt get exhausted with me yet, Iโm being serious about my offer, itโll be better for us in the long run if you-โ
Then he stops talking. Valerie doesnโt know why. She doesnโt understand why heโs stopped mid sentence but it canโt be good right? Why would Danny go to live with him? Why would he meet up with him there in the first place? Wasnโt mayor Masters just a good friend of the Fentons? Wouldnโt that make him Dannyโs uncle or god father or something? Why did he say itโll be better for them in the long run?
So many questions flood Valerieโs mind she doesnโt even realize thereโs shifting going on. Not until a loud voice comes from above,
โHey Val!โ
She jolts back, falling onto the worn vinyl of the booth seat. Eyes wide in panic as she looks up to Danny, whoโs now leaned over the partition and looking down at her with slight amusement.
โOh uh, Danny! What are uh, what are you doing here?โ Damn, she didnโt mean to get herself caught.
โOh, my uncle Vlad promised to get me whatever I wanted if I passed the biology mid term.โ She swears she heard Vlad make a noise at that, but she canโt be too sure through her anxiety.
โO-h.โ She sits up and rubs whatever sauce thatโd gotten onto her elbow off. โWell thatโs very nice of him.โ
โYouโre working tonight?โ Danny asks, more relaxed over the partition now as he eyes her getting herself together, trying to get hairs from her face to stay out of her eyes. โI thought you only did weekends?โ
โYeah, Sparky traded shifts with me last minute cause dad and I are seeing family this weekend.โ She glances at the clock. Still seven minutes until her shift started. Damnit.
โOh, okay, I wonโt bother you then.โ He stares at her a moment, mouth opening to say more but she stops him.
โIt was uh, nice seeing you Danny,โ she doesnโt want to hear it from him if he knew sheโd been listening to their conversation. When she glances back to them from behind the counter, theyโve already left the building.
Next time she sees Vlad as the Red Huntress, sheโs totally interrogating him about this.

Iโm currently taking an interest check for Vladdymas. It will be a prompt event celebrating and creating works for Vlad. As the name suggests, it will be held in December (but not just holiday prompts lol). If youโre interested, please reblog! If there are any questions, ask away!
Uh oh! Danny has another parent teacher conference, but his parents are can't attend for some reason! But say now, isn't the mayor his uncle? ๐
Hehe
Vlad wasnโt expecting a call from Mr. Lancer of all people. The only reason he recognized his name was because, well, he did stalk Danny. He knew all his grades and had seen his report cards. He knew his teachers names, how long theyโd been teaching, and how long theyโd known Danny- he even knew if Jazz had been in their previous classes.
โYou need to talk about Daniel?โ Heโd asked so curiously over the phone.
โAs his closest next of kin, and as an approved guardian of Danny, youโre the only other option we have while his parents are out of town.โ
Next of kin? Approved guardian? Now those are terms he will let go straight to his head. Not that anyone had any proof of him being next of kin, he assumed Jack had something to do with all of this. He did have back up plans sometimes, who knew. Vlad wishes he would have told him so he could have used it to his advantage before.
โI know youโre a busy mayor, but if you have the time-โ
โOf course I have the time for my dear nephew.โ
Vlad assures. โAfter school you said?โ
โYes, thatโs correct.โ
โSplendid.โ
High school. Vlad never had a good time in high school. The smell of cheap perfume and despair are lingering in the halls. He finds his way to the offices, unsurprised by the terrible layout of the building. And there waiting, arms crossed in annoyance, is Daniel.
โMayor Masters, Iโm glad you could make it.โ
Lancer spots them before Vlad can answer, which is totally fine with Vlad. The confused to horrified look Daniel has while his eyes rapidly bounce back and forth between himself and Lancer is satisfying enough.
โOf course, Iโm always happy to help when it comes to the well being of my dear nephew.โ
โIf youโll follow me to my office we can get down to business.โ
Mr. Lancerโs eyes go to Daniel and sharpen. Vlad can feel the sweat coming off of him.
When Vlad sits down, heโs reminded of just how much heโs grown since high school. Not because heโs better dressed or rich. But because these chairs are not meant for his height. Theyโre uncomfortable and hard. Daniel sits in the seat next to him, hands wringing the straps of his school bag as he tries to feign some sort of confidence about this situation.
โI donโt know if Mr. Fenton has filled you in,โ Lancer begins and Vlad almost winces. Mr. Fenton is what all the professors used to painfully seethe out towards him and Jack during class, โbut Danny is on a path to repeat his first year here at Casper High.โ
Vlad canโt help but to glance down to Daniel. Heโs still in his seat and now hard staring at the floor. Lips in a thin line as his cheeks shine red.
โI had no idea.โ Which is true for the most part. He knew Daniel didnโt have the grades his sister did, but he didnโt think it was that bad.
โWhile his grades could use a lot of improvement, itโs his attendance that is holding him back.โ
Ah, well, that made a lot of sense.
โI see,โ Vlad nods as Lancer slides a copy of Danielโs absences towards him. Just in the last month alone, heโd missed half the day at least three times a week and a full day one to two times a week. Vlad tries to remember how much Amity Park had been in any danger. He wasnโt the hero, though, it didnโt matter to him what ghosts were up to as long as his voter ratings stayed steady. So if there was an uptick in ghost activity, he wouldnโt have noticed. Other than keeping track of how many articles were written about Phantom.
โThe absences marked in blue are ones Iโve manually excused in the systemโฆโ itโs mostly the half day absences, โIโm actually glad you came today rather than his parents.โ
Mr. Lancer does know how to stroke his ego.
โIโm concerned with the lack of sleep he may be getting, many kids these days fall asleep in class from being up with their computer games and such, but Iโve never seen anyone soโฆโ Lancer glances to Danny, eyes squinting as his hands play in the air. Whatever heโs trying to say, Vlad thinks heโs trying to spare Dannyโs feelings about it. โLethargic.โ He finally decides to settle on the word.
Lethargic was one way to put it.
โMr and Mrs Fenton donโt seem as concerned, but donโt be mistaken that if this type of attendance does not improve he will be held back.โ
Maybe having Daniel in on the conversation wasnโt the best. Just one more look at him and Vlad can see the embarrassment had turned to shame in his eyes.
โI appreciate you bringing this to my attention Mr. Lancer, Iโll have a talk with Danielโs parents about this,โ he looks back up to the paper with a myriad of absences all over it, โtell me, is it unavoidable now or is there anything he can do to make up for his lost time?โ
Lancer coughs in his fist and nods, โwith the amount of time and work that has been missed, Danny would have to correct his attendance to being present every day of the week, then he would have to begin remedial classes every Saturday until the end of the school year, and then attend summer school.โ
โBut that would save him from being held back?โ
โOnly if he puts in the effort required.โ Lancer nods.
Vlad chews on the facts in his mind. It would be one thing if this was just about Daniel not being able to keep his pants up or getting into trouble with bullies. It might even be fun to tease him about how little power he had with so much of it in his hands.
This, though, doesnโt sit right on his tongue. Daniel is so quiet that he feels like he has to listen to make sure his heart is still beating.
Nodding slowly, he sighs.
โVery well then,โ he starts, โsign him up for the remedial classes, thank you for your time, I can tell you care very much for my nephew,โ because any other school system would have failed him out and sent him to a different school by now.
โHis sister does a lot to convince me of his bright spirit,โ Lancer admits, โbut I have confidence in him as well.โ
They shake hands as they stand. Danny gets up beside him. When they leave, heโs quiet. The only thing filling the halls is the click of Vladโs low heels.
He looks down to him again. He thinks his eyes are stuck on the floor.
โIโll take you home.โ
He expects resistance. Instead, Danny just nods again. Maybe heโs not thinking right. Still, he gets into his car and buckles himself. If it were any other circumstance, he might just kidnap him.
The situation had unfortunately tugged just enough at his heartstrings that he felt sorry for Daniel. Not in the condescending โIโm sorry Jack Fenton is your fatherโ kind of way. But in a way that made him genuinely empathetic for the boy.
When they arrive in front of the Fenton Works building, he can see surprise in Dannyโs eyes. Maybe heโd thought heโd just drive away with him too.
โArenโt you gonna laugh?โ
His voice is scratchy. But itโs the first thing heโs said since theyโve left the school.
โWhy would I laugh?โ
Daniel does. Laughing half heartedly as he holds onto himself. He wonโt even raise his head. If Vlad wanted to, he could knock him unconscious with ease.
โBecause Iโm failing at everything,โ Dannyโs fingers dig into the skin of his arm, โat school, at home, at being the towns hero,โ his voice cuts, โthereโs this ghost thatโs been hanging around and causing trouble for months and I canโt- I canโt catch it, itโs too slippery and gets away and I- so many people have been hurt by it- and I stay up to fight it and anything else- then I study- and my alarm clock isnโt enough to get me up every time- and I just- Iโm failing Vlad, Iโm a failure,โ when his voice begins to crack, Vlad thinks thatโs the final string inside him to be tugged, ripping open the heart heโd carefully mended together long ago.
For the first time, it really hits Vlad that Daniel isโฆ Daniel is just a kid. Not a pawn. Not a nuisance. Just a child with the burden of ghost powers and parents too blind to see his struggles.
โSo go ahead and laugh, I know you want to.โ
โDaniel,โ Vlad starts carefully, heโs really not the person Daniel needs right now, but he is the only one here so heโd have to do, โyou know youโre not obligated to protect the town.โ
โI canโt help- itโs not- you of all people know I have to.โ
The glare he receives riles his own defensiveness for a moment. Yes. He knows Daniel had to protect people. Thatโs who he is. What he does. If only his obsession hadnโt formed over such a thing.
โI know,โ Vlad sighs and pinches his brow, he understands the frustration, โthen Iโll handle it.โ
โWhat?โ
โThe ghosts, the town, Iโll handle it.โ He is the mayor, so he probably should care more about people. But really, heโd rather do it for Daniel instead.
โYou canโt be serious.โ
โIโm sure after seeing someone competent at fighting, any other ghost would feel foolish to dare cause a scene.โ He smirks at the fierceness that lights behind Danielโs eyes at the comment.
โAnd why should I trust you? Youโre not actually my uncle yโknow.โ
With hesitation, and a dozen second thoughts running through Vladโs mind, he finally sighs while admitting, โI failed the eighth grade.โ
โWhat?โ
โI failed the eighth grade Daniel, and no nephew son of mine should have to deal with that kind of embarrassment.โ
โYouโre bluffing.โ
โOh no, I wish I were dear boy,โ Vlad hates to reach that far back into his memory, but like many things he failed to do in life, they brand into his mind so even if heโs not thinking about them theyโll always be there. โI was quite the rebel back then, skipping chores, skipping school, smoking and shoplifting alcohol.โ
Daniel looks at him for a minute before wiping what tears were left from his face. โWhat did your parents do?โ
Vlad pauses and coughs into his hand, โletโs not get into all that,โ memories he wonโt burden Daniel with, โso youโre going to study, and rest, and pass onto your sophomore year with your friends.โ
Again, Daniel laughs, but more light than before, โyou know youโre not the boss of me, right?โ
โAre you denying my offer? Because I have much more dubious ways to-โ
โOkay.โ
โPardon?โ
โOkay, fine, but there better not be a catch cause Iโm not disowning my dad or whatever.โ
A catch. Vlad knew he was forgetting something.
โWhy donโt we wager on it hm?โ Vlad grins, โif you fail, youโll come live with me as my son for as long as I see fit, and if you passโ allfouryears โIโll pay your college tuition.โ
Danielโs blue eyes sharpen at him for a minute. Vlad just smiles as innocently as possible at him. Even though he could absolutely sabotage the deal, he wouldnโt. Heโd meant what heโd said. Daniel needed help andโฆ for some reason Vlad wanted to help him.

Headcanoning Vladโs hands are constantly covered in cat scratches from playing with his cat(s). It gets to the point where his increased healing either canโt keep up or it just gets used to the scratches because they happen so much and kind of ignores them. No point in healing a scratch if itโs going to be back the next day again.
Inspired purely by the catsitting Iโve done and how I end up with at least one new bandaid on my fingers every day from playing with the cats.
@solionette Iโm cradling your tags so gently in my hands. Yessss I love the poetic-ness of Vlad walking off fight after fight without a single wound on him, yet his hands, something covered completely when heโs projecting his might as Plasmius, those hands are covered in small scratches and callouses. The only marks on him are self inflicted or from the only thing he lets get close to him (his cats). Everything else canโt even leave a single mark on him.
And those few scars from actual fights just serve as a reinforcement for his belief of never letting his guard down, he let it down just a bit and it left him hurt and marked.
I also just really love the idea of his plasma sword leaving marks on his hands too, from regular wear and tear of handling a sword but also from the close contact with his burning hot ectoplasm kept so close to the sensitive skin of his hands.
i keep thinking about this cause like. you can tell a lot about a person from their hands yknow? like cracked skin on the edge of the palm or thumb? real leather gloves will do that to ya- the friction gets easy to ignore, but it'll keep building up. lots of tiny cuts on the fingers/near cuticles? probably handle a lot of paper or cardboard in a day. small, deep cuts on the very tips of the finger or near the knuckles? common while cooking, especially if you zone out while chopping.
calluses on the fingerpads and right over the carpals? meant to give you protection from whatever it is you're griping so long, like a hammer, saw, weight bar, or.... say, a sword. an ectoplasm sword, even, which would definitely burn even through his gloves after extended use. and who knows how long it may have taken Vlad to learn how to properly control the energy output of his ectoplasm as a young ghost.... probably a patch of skin still scarred from trial and error.
and of course, plenty of little red welts from Maddie's teeth and claws- cats can be so tempermental when they're done being petted.
after spending two decades living more ghost than man, isolated, it would be hard to believe that there's much human left in his dna. except everything he touches has a chance to embed itself in his skin as a reminder: Vlad's still in there, somewhere.
