Saetar has an endocrine disorder that means they can’t use pheromone signaling. This is a pretty significant barrier to finding a pack as an adult, as it essentially turns you into an emotional brick wall. Even the rutatarri language lacks emotion indicators, because spoken language is so heavily supplemented by pheromone cues.

As a pup, Saetar was very quiet, barely speaking at all. This does not mean they weren’t listening, and they hit the ground running when it came to written information; rutatarri written language is based on scent-blind, the sign language Saetar was raised with, because you can’t pheromone signal from a piece of paper. Rutatarri pups usually take a long time to learn to read and write fluently. Saetar did not have this issue.

Like a lot of socially uncomfortable kids, Saetar read everything they could get their claws on. Around age 8, their parents (a pack of 6 adults + 9 pups) realized their littlest pup had perfect recall, functionally a photographic memory. That’s a very prized skill for rutatarri, who tend to prefer speaking with subject experts to reading.

Saetar loved the idea of becoming a knowledge-keeper, a role that the translation team would later choose to translate into English as “librarian”.

rutatarri attraction is generally based on two components: nonverbal flirtation through pheromone signaling and social grooming, and perceived benefit to the pack as a whole. the more competent someone is, the hotter they are, ESPECIALLY if they have something to offer that their suitors do not.

Saetar is sort of… ridiculously sexy by the standards of their people. Librarians are hot by default, because encyclopedic knowledge is rare and valuable. Saetar is also good at mediating conflicts, which is vital in a species that lives in large groups. And then, on top of THAT, Saetar was the one who figured out that humans are less threatened by rutatarri that are laying down, because they read that as submissive instead of territorial???

strongest swimmer in the pack, gets drafted to be a sea monster and/or a mama squid when the squidlets are playing pretend. also great at bedtime stories.
