Sokkla Saturdays 2025
Chapter 9: Home
AO3 & FF.Net
We've wrapped up Sokkla Saturdays once again. As always, I enjoyed this event. Writing and reading. This was my first fanfiction that I've (for now) completed, and it was a fantastic experience. Writing an entire story is anything but easy. It requires a lot of planning, revisions, and adjustments. I've definitely gained a new respect for writers and authors who even write entire book series. It took a lot of thought and effort, and I really enjoyed writing it. The story ends here, for now (?). I liked this setting and this version of Sokkla, and there are characters and things I'd like to explore; develop further. I don't know, but hopefully, I can continue working on this story in the future. For now, I hope you'll like this last chapter. I had a very different one in mind when I first started writing this story. Things turned out this way and I believe this was the right and most fitting way.=) Thank you so much to everyone who read my fanfiction and for your lovely comments. I was so happy about them! <33 And thank you to everyone who organized this nice event! I'm already looking forward to next year.
The next month passed by quickly. After the thunderstorm that lasted for two whole days, the islanders went to their daily usual lives.
Sokka, however, wished itâd be endless thunderstorms, so that he could stay in the house with his wife forever. Talking, cuddling, playing games, preparing food clumsily and lovemaking, followed by taking a warm bath and lots of playful teasing and laughter.
But duty was calling and he went to his usual work mostly in the barracks and controlling points. Azula accompanied him every now and then. On other days she explored Kyoshi Island, spend time with the people and the guards together with Ty Lee often. Sokka made an official announcement, confirming Azulaâs title as Crown Princess. Everything found its way. Keona apologized for his unfair treatment of Azula, which she accepted. Despite it all, she still was wary around him. Which was rare since Keano mostly accompanied Sokka and had other important jobs on the Island.
The weather became slightly warmer. Azula could see the sun again, since the fog had gone. She grew to like the rain and the fog, but it felt good to have warmer seasons occasionally too. It reminded her of the times she watched the sunset in Caldera City.
Sunsets could be seen clearly from her and Sokkaâs house, which she never missed when she was home. Her arms crossed, she stood on the balcony enjoying the spectacle of nature.
Arms slung around her suddenly. A kiss pressed to her cheek with a pleasant humming noise. She instantly smiled.
âHard day?â Azula asked, sliding her hands on his arms.
âRead too many protocols today. But itâs finally over.â Sokka said, resting his chin on her shoulder.
He waited patiently. When he was done he couldnât wait to come home as quickly as possible. To Azula. His wonderful wife.
âYou must be hungry.â she said.
âI definitely am.â he said.
Sokka felt a little melancholy coming from Azula.
âHow was your day? Is everything alright?â he asked.
âI went to the bakery after my visit to the hut. Bought our favorite baked goods.â Azula said.
âArenât you the perfect wife.â he said pressing another kiss to her cheek, âOther than that?â
Azula smiled wide. He was just so mindful and attentive. How was he so amazing, she didnât know.
âAlright, you caught me again Your Highness.â she turned around in his arms, resting her palms on his muscular chest, âYou never miss anything do you?â
Sokka smiled lovely at her, pecking her lips.
âCanât help it. Need to know exactly why my wife is troubled.â he said.
âItâs not a trouble. I was thinking that maybe I could work. As Crown Princess, maybe I could be included?â she asked shyly.
Sokka listened intently, taking her words and troubles seriously as always. Throughout the last month they talked about a lot of things, but he felt her holding back on some things. He always thought it was because certain things were painful for her, certain memories. Sokka would never want her to hold back with him. Yet he would never pressure her. He would try to read her eyes, understand her voice, and give her time. That she expressed her thoughts now, especially about her role as Crown Princess in his, their Tribe, made him very happy. He smiled encouragingly at her.
âWhat do you have in mind?â he asked.
Azula looked at him warily, yet with a smile. He didnât even question her thoughts.
âThe roles of the Royals are not listed in the Northern Water Tribe. Maybe centuries ago.â Sokka started explaining, âWell the male Royals and the men in general have certain responsibilities of course, which we proudly and willingly fulfill. Such as taking care of our family and providing their needs.â
âAs for the women: well, no one would ever judge or question you if you donât take part in working. But if itâs what you want, itâs respected and valued as well as motivating. But in our case, I would of course never want you to overwork yourself.â
Azulaâs heart warmed more at his words.
âYou know Sokka, I often wonder how lucky I am to be part of your, I mean our Tribe. To be with you.â she whispered the last bit smirking.
âItâs me, who is lucky.â Sokka said.
âI was thinking about school for one. Like, maybe including some new lessons that would be helpful.â Azula said, âOr I was also thinking to come join you in reading protocols and have an eye of the traffic on our outer islands?â
âThat sounds great Azula! Iâll arrange a meeting with the head teacher next week?â
âThat sounds great Sokka.â she said lovingly and they kissed.
âI need a bath.â he said.
âMe too.â she said.
Without warning, Sokka knelt and threw her over his shoulder, carrying her inside. Azula let out a shriek.
âRude Crown Prince.â
Sokka laughed at her comment.
âNaughty Crown Princess.â
They enjoyed a round of lovemaking while the bathtub filled. After washing themselves, they relaxed in the warm water amid bubbles. Azula stroked his back scar, which he got used to. Every time she did that, it reminded him of the first time she asked him about it weeks ago.
Sokka, searching for clothes Infront of the wardrobe, felt Azulaâs finger stroke his scar on his back. He went still. The scar still hurt from time to time. Right now, it felt good. It felt healing when she gently touched it. He felt her fingers trembling.
âSokka.â she silently said, âHow can you be so nice and polite to me and my family, when it was my uncle who did this to you?â
He turned around.
âI read the book. I wonât ever forget.â she said.
Sokka smiled, running his hand down on her hair once.
âI would never blame others for one personâs sin, if the others arenât even included. Zuko for example has been my friend for years now. As for Iroh: I will forever loath him for trying to attack my sister. We never knew if he planned it, because it was a last-minute decision for Katara to go to Whaletail Island. What he did still canât be justified, yet we could understand that hatred of a hurt father who just lost his son. In his eyes, it was our fault that he lost Lu Ten. But in his last actions, he went too far. It is never acceptable. This time, he deliberately aimed for me, us.â
Azula hugged him tightly, pressing her face to his naked chest, stroking his scar.
âHey,â Sokka said, when she sniffed, trying not to cry, âItâs over now. Nothing hurts when you are with me.â He kissed her head, holding her close to his chest.
They talked leisurely at dinner. Sokka told her about the newest trading and what most likely awaited them in the coming weeks.
âAs for working, maybe itâs time we slowly built a new foundation and form new ideas about a true partnership with the Fire Nation. Preferably with Zuko in the first place.â Sokka said.
Azulaâs heart skipped a beat. She tried to calm down, wondering if it was silly of her to be excited about that, when Sokka actually wanted it from the beginning.
âSounds pretty good. Zuko visited Water Tribe Islands often.â she said.
âNot only that, but we can also visit the Fire Nation.â Sokka said.
Azula looked up from her food eyes wideing. Sokka smiled at her reaction.
âThis was my plan and wish for a long time now. For a trusting partnership. It grew immense after marrying you.â he said, taking her hand from across the table and kissing her knuckles softly, while still looking at her.
Her heart, warming constantly since coning together with him, warmed even more at his words and actions.
âI appreciate that and would like to have the same thing. But I doubt others will like it much?â
âThey will, trust me.â
âWhat if Zhao or my father pull anything wrong?â
âThey need to earn out trust of course. As far as things stand, all went smoothly so far.â Sokka said.
Azula raised an eyebrow at his claim.
âExcept for Iroh of course.â
âI think it is actually a good idea. Start with ideas and plans. I especially would be glad to see my brother.â
âWhen we work on a plan and our court also sees it, theyâll trust you and me. And then, Zuko can also come visit us here on the island.â Sokka said.
âIt sounds like a dream that wouldnât come true.â Azula said.
âBut it can be. It will be I believe in that.â Sokka said, âWe also had meetings on the outer Islands of the Fire Nation.â We can go there as well when things are safe.â
âSokka, are you being serious?â
âOf course.â he smiled encouragingly, âSo far, I visited some of the outer islands and also Fire Fountain City, which was the closest to the capital. Farer away was never allowed. But I heard Ember Island and Shu Jing are nice?â
âThey are believe me. The scenery in the Fire Nation is always beautiful. Here too of course, but you know what I mean, just different. Itâs also much warmer than hereâŚâ Azula kept explaining enthusiastically.
Sokka smiled, a little sadly. His chest hurt. Azula never once told him that she wanted to visit the Fire Nation. Never asked him for trading plans. Yet he deep down knew, she would welcome it. She might not miss the people she grew up with around there, except for Zuko, but she would surely like to see nature and the cities, towns and islands. And he would be excited to see it with her. He always wanted to see more of the Fire Nation. Going there with her, his wife, would be wonderful.
Azula slid in yet another one of her pretty dresses. Combing her hair in front of the mirror. Sokka couldnât help but steal kisses. Pressing his mouth on her shoulders and neck.
Playfully and with laughter, they prepared for the day. Sokka loved hearing her laugh. It was one the most beautiful sound he ever heard.
The dining room wasnât empty. Katara sat at the table, waiting for them. Azula and Sokka knew sheâd be visiting today.
âWell, well, look whose here.â Sokka said.
Katara hugged him then turned to Azula.
âGood morning Azula.â
They only met two weeks ago after the event in the Northern Water Tribe. Other than exchanging greetings, they hadnât talked much. Sokka didnât urge them to, deciding it needed time. But he hoped they would slowly warm up to each other.
âWelcome to our home Katara.â Azula replied.
They sat together at the table where Yori prepared breakfast first and then left for the weekend.
âI have an invitation for the two of you.â Katara said, pulling out a scroll, that looked very elegant.
She actually handed it to Azula instead of Sokka. Azula seemed surprised at her âgestureâ. She took it and thanked her.
Sokka neared her, peaking inside the scroll Azula opened.
The King & Queenâs 35th Anniversary
âYeah, I had forgotten about that. Itâs already in two weeks?â Sokka asked.
âYes, they drive me crazy Sokka. I am so happy for them, but the enthusiasm and romantic gestures in front of me are too much to take. Iâd like to stay here for a couple of days please.â Katara said.
Sokka laughed at that and Azula actually smiled. She was still kind of like a stranger to the royal couple. But she liked them. Even if Queen Kyaâs actions the last time still baffled her.
âThey are also excited to receive the Crown Princess properly this time.â Katara said looking at the person in question, âI think theyâll give you two tons of love advice.â
âI couldnât get to know them so well the last time.â Azula said silently.
âBelieve me, they are two goofy lovers. You might think after decades of marriage it would go away, but it didnât.â Katara smiled, âEven if they can be annoying, they are dream couple.â
âYup, they really are.â Sokka said, âBut do you know who is even dreamier?â
Azula and Katara looked at him questioningly. They feared the answer but didnât say anything. Sokkaâs wide toothy smile faded when no one talked
âCome on guys you know!â
When still no answer came, he huffed annoyed.
âMe and my wife! Crown Prince Sokka and Crown Princess Azula of course!â he said, pulling Azula to his side.
Katara shook her head and laughed.
Azula blushed but smiled despite herself. She never thought much of relationships. Yet deep down always had wondered if someone could love another person outside their family members, much. If a person would put a loved oneâs life over theirs. And she silently wished, that if she would fall for a guy, it would have to be a true man. A man. When the world around them crumbled down, and the worst things would happen to her, she would press her head on his chest, stay in his arms that would be wrapped protectively around her and everything would feel safeâŚ
She was in the arms of that man now. And she prayed and thanked God everyday for it.

Chapter 8: Love & Thunderstorm
AO3 & FF.Net
M/R-Rated
Again, it seems to be impossible to upload on ff.net.
Due to the approaching thunderstorm, it seemed as if it were already night, although it was only dusk. Sokka urged Azula to go up to the house. He insisted on walking her there himself, yet Azula told him to go finish his business as quickly as possible.
Accompanied by half of the royal guards, Azula rushed inside the house. She wanted to wash herself and change into fresh clothes. As she entered the house, a feeling of familiarity enveloped her. She had only been gone for a day, but it had felt longer with everything that happened.
âAzula!â Ty Lee appeared suddenly.
She gave Azula a hug, looking worried.
âWhat happened? Are you okay? Did you really go to the tribe? And Zuko? Is it true he came here?â Ty Lee asked.
âYes. Iâll explain everything, but first I need to wash myself.â Azula said.
âYori prepared a meal for us. We were informed of your arrival.â Ty Lee said.
Azula nodded. She told Sokka to eat something in his meetings, since she wasnât sure he ate anything at all today.
After Azula was ready, the friends shared their meal, having long conversations. It helped her. Ty Lee told her about her life in the hut too.
After her friend left, Azula kept staring out of the window. It had already started raining and Sokka hadnât come home yet.
âYour Highness, this scroll arrived from the barracks for you.â Yori said.
âThank you.â Azula said.
She immediately opened the scroll.
I might take longer than I thought, but I promise Iâll be home before the storm breaks. Please do not leave the house. If you need something, ask the guards. â Sokka
Azula smiled. She hoped heâd come as soon as possible. She wondered if it was silly of her, but she put the scroll in her dresser. A part of her wanted to keep it. It felt like a first letter from Sokka.
While wandering around the house she realized that she never saw Sokkaâs room. Excitedly, she went into it. It was a room that was fitting for him she thought. She looked over his desk and took in everything. There was a little painting of him with his parents and sister when they were children. Her heart grew warm at the sight of cute little Sokka. Maybe one day, she could spend more time with his parents, get to know them better.
Her eyes caught his bone necklace on the chest of drawers next to his bed. She just noticed that he hadnât been wearing it. She took the necklace caressing it. His bed was slightly more spacious than Herâs. With the necklace still in her hand Azula sat down on it. Surely, it wouldnât be a problem to lay on his bed for a short whileâŚ
....................................................................................
Night broke when Sokka finally arrived home. Thunder and lightning danced over the island. Sokka thought Azula might be already in bed. But her room was empty which scared him a little too much. He rushed through the hallway and checked the bathroom. Also empty. By reflex he opened the already ajar door to his room and breathed out of relief. He felt a little foolish over worrying so much. She wouldnât, couldnât possibly leave.
Warmth spread in his chest at the sight of her, on his bed, with his necklace in her hand. His heart skipped a beat now. She had a thin strapped dress, her shoulders and neck completely bare. He neared the bed and caressed her hair lovely. Carefully he pulled the duvet from under her, trying not to wake her. After covering her, he run his finger over his wedding ribbon he never removed except for when taking a bath, which he had to do now.
When he came back he put the ribbon on again and snuggled up to her from behind, putting one arm around her. Azula took his hand in Herâs smiling. Sokka didnât say anything, just held on. He would have loved to turn her around and kiss her gently. Azula wanted to kiss him, for him to tear away her dress. But they just slept, which was the best thing for now. Sokka had to rest.
Next day arrived, the morning greeted with dark skies. Azula's back was pressed against his chest. She could feel his breath on her shoulder. They were still holding hands. Azula quietly turned around in his arms and smiled at the sight of him sleeping peacefully. A new sight greeted her: Sokkaâs hair was loose. It felt soft around her fingers. Unable to resist the urge, she leaned in and pressed a soft kiss on his eyebrow.
The need to go to the bathroom made her leave the bed. After tending to her needs, she noticed an unusual silence in the house. No sound came from the kitchen, Yori was nowhere around. Her stomach growled and she took a small slice of bread. Then she walked down the stairs going to the garden. A loud thunder made her jump.
âGood morning Your Highness.â the guard standing in front of the patio doors greeted.
âGood morning.â Azula replied, âDo you know where Yori is?â
âShe spends the weekends with her family.â he replied.
âI understand.â she said, looking up to the sky. She was amazed by the generosity of the Water Tribe Royals.
âYour Highness, this is your last chance to take some fresh air. Weâll close all doors and windows soon and stand guard inside. The storm is arriving.â he said.
âAlright then.â Azula smiled at him.
She walked around the pond, the sky was darkening although it was midmorning, she could see lightning far away. Her eyes caught Sokka in the balcony of his room, which was also connected to her room. He was standing there shirtless, watching her while holding onto the railings. Azula smiled and walked inside.
....................................................................................
Sokka loved Azula. He admitted his feelings to himself and her. She was with him, didnât leave him. They kissed and slept on the same bed. He was sure she cared about him too. Yet a part of him was scared. Unsure still.
âAwake already?â she asked.
Sokka turned around as she walked out to the balcony. Raindrops started to fall.
âGood morning.â he greeted, smiling halfheartedly.
âMorning.â she said, walking closer to him, standing right in front of him.
Silence filled the air for a moment.
âSokka, is something wrong? You seem thoughtful since yesterday.â she asked.
Azula was looking so tenderly at him, with her glowing eyes and full lips. He stroked a curly strand of her hair.
âIâŚâ he started.
âYou?â Azula said, when he stopped, âYou do not trust me right?â
Sokkaâs eyebrows furrowed at her question.
âI gave your brother permission to sail on our waters, ensured you two could meet, took you to the Tribe , although I caught you sneaking around twice, and you think I do not trust you?â he said.
Azula both felt bad and insulted. Her mood fell a little. A part of him was still angry she thought, it wasnât done yesterday on the ship.
âI am not saying this as to rub it in your face, never! But I think itâs you who doubts me. You are not trusting me.â Sokka talked gently, he looked hurt.
âI do Sokka!â Azula said, âI trust you more now, itâs true that I needed time. But I trust you. I came here with you. I donât want to do anything bad to you or your Tribe, I never did actually, and I think you might figure it out yourself already.â
âOur Tribe.â Sokka corrected.
âOur Tribe.â Azula whispered, eyes watering,
Sokka took her face in his hands, stroking her cheeks with his thumbs.
âAzula, I want for us both to be honest with each other, always. No secrets or mistrust.â
Azula nodded, putting her hands over his on her cheeks.
âI need to hear it Azula.â Sokka whispered, âDo you want to stay, be here with me?â
The smile she carried this morning came back to her face.
âYes. I want to be here with you. I want to live here on Kyoshi Island, in this house, together. I want âŚâ she closed her eyes for a moment, unable to keep talking.
Sokka would wait. Even if he would have to wait forever. For her, he would wait patiently. Give her as much time as she needed, to express herself, to open up to him.
âIâŚâ she opened her eyes again and put one hand on his heart. Sokka gulped at the touch.
âI want you. I love you Sokka.â
His features softened even more. He had so hoped to hear her say these words.
âI love you Azula.â
Both leaned in at the same time, kissing passionately. Sokkaâs hand slowly stroked its way to her bare neck, to which she reacted with goosebumps. She caressed his chest, his kiss grew firmer, yet still gentle. Azula pressed her body into his, her hands landed on his shoulders. One of Sokkaâs hands held her on the waist, the other on her neck went to the back of her head, holding her in place. She was shorter and needed to look up.
They broke the kiss to breathe and to look into each otherâs eyes, meaningfully.
Sokka caressed her bare arms sensually and she kissed him wilder, while he tried to stay gentle, but stroked her tongue with his. He knelt down just a little, and she wrapped her legs around his waist, her dress sliding up baring her legs. His hands landed on her thighs, holding her. Sokka walked into the room, closing the door to the balcony behind him in time the thunderstorm began.
Sokka carried her to the bed and climbed on top of her. Azula stroked his face and placed her hands on his shoulders, while Sokka repeatedly kissed her neck. He slowly pulled down the straps of her dress before looking for her reaction. Azula slid her arms out from the straps herself and pressed her lips to his. If it wasn't for the thunderstorm, their heavy breaths could've been heard nonstop.
Desperate, nervous, and excited, Sokka pulled down her dress and with it, her underpantie. He kissed his way down, one hand on her leg, the other on her breast, he went down on her. Azula pulled at his hair, which encouraged him. Her hands grabbed the sheets when she reached her peak. Sokka would have loved to show her more love. Kiss and touch every single part of her skin. But Azula couldnât wait any longer. She pulled him over, urging him to get rid of his last pieces of clothing.
Full of passion, holding on closely, moaning each otherâs names over and over again, they made love. Sokka gently pleased her in the best way, which made him feel great  too.
Sokka kissed her lovely. Then climbed off her to lay next to her and pulled her tightly against his chest. The duvet tugged over their sweaty naked bodies, he didnât let go, his arms wrapped around her. Azulaâs hands were nestled on his chest, feeling his heartbeat. They enjoyed their most peaceful and happiest moment.
....................................................................................
The storm would stop for a few minutes at a time and then resume violently. Sokkaâs empty stomach was the only reason that led them to leave the bed. Azula and Sokka made toast in the kitchen and enjoyed their meal in the cozy room with the bookshelves.
Sokkaâs eyes caught a scroll on the table.
âHave you not read your fatherâs letter?â he asked curiously.
âI have. Nothing new. Kinda repeats Zhaoâs words.â Azula said, âYou can read it too if youâd like to.â
Sokka pulled her on his lap since she seemed bothered by the letter. Azula blushed.
âWe are closer to a good partnership with the Fire Nation than ever. Once Zuko is crowned, that partnership will turn into friendship.â Sokka said.
âI do hope so. But here are people who donât even trust me yet Sokka.â
âMy parents do. And believe me, thereâre people who already like and respect you. You saw it when we did the tour on the island. Our guards included.â
âYour father has been so nice to me. You two resemble each other a lot.â Azula said smiling. She stroked his neck and stubbles.
âI know. He has been always my hero. Both my parents actually.â Sokka didnât say more. He was afraid since she wasnât lucky with her parents.
âI barely talked with your mother though. And I still wonder why she let me go.â
âNext time, youâll have plenty of time to interact with her.â he winked.
Azula looked at him with skepticism.
âWhat? You think you wonât ever go to the Northern Water Tribe?â he asked.
âI mean⌠I didnât have time to consider it.â
âUnder better circumstances of course.â Sokka said smiling. âBesides, once the storm is over, Iâll make an official announcement.â
âWhat announcement?â she asked.
âYour title is going to be official.â
âSokka are you sure?â
âEhm, you are Crown Princess already. But after the clear announcement nobody can question you.â he said.
Azula smiled. It touched her so much to know that he trusted her so much already.
âKeano canât question you either.â Sokka said.
âI am not so sure about him to be honest.â Azula said.
âHe will, trust me.â Sokka said seriously.
âDid something happen?â
âI got angry at him, well to everyone who made you sad in the Tribe. But we talked yesterday and all is good, donât worry.â he said kissing her cheek.
âSokka, Iâd never want to stand in between you and any of the people you care about.â
He pulled her closer, âYou are the one I care about.â
His thumb slipped under her dress and stroked her thigh.
âBold of you, Your Highness.â Azula whispered dangerously.
Sokka smirked. She kissed him sensually, putting her palm on his crotch.
âAzula!â he panicked, eyes parting.
âYou think only you can be bold?â Azula whispered on his lips.
Sokka put his whole palm on her thigh lightly squeezing and running it up and down. She moaned into their kiss, she caressed his neck and chest. It wasnât long before things got heated and he carried her to the bedroom again that day.
This time they didnât rush. It was more thorough, cherishing, yet still very loving and gentle. Sokka gave her so much love and tenderness. Azula rested on his chest afterwards, Sokka holding her closely, caressing her hair and running his hand up and down her spine. They rested for a long while, watching the lighting out of the window.
âI love you.â Sokka said.
âI love you.â Azula replied, with a happy smile.

Authorâs Note:
Hey there, brave reader. First off, how are you holding up after that last story? It was heavy, I know. Hopefully, you managed to find some space to breathe. To make up for it, this oneâs much lighter, cozier, and easy to digest. So kick back, maybe grab a warm drink, and let this story be your little pause button for the day. The morning sun filtered softly through the curtains, painting lazy gold patterns across the room. Outside, the world buzzed with the usual chaos, but inside, there was only quiet, and a reluctant agreement that today, neither of them was going anywhere. Not really.
Sokka stretched, letting out a slow yawn, eyes half-lidded as he glanced over at Azula, who was still curled up under the blankets with her usual sharp edge softened by sleep. No plans. No expectations. Just the simple, unspoken understanding that sometimes, a day spent tangled in sheets and silence wasnât a surrender. It was exactly what they needed.
Sokkaâs eyes fluttered open, sunlight catching the faint lines of exhaustion still etched on his face. He stretched, letting out a soft groan, a sound that had become their unspoken morning alarm. Azula, nestled against the pillow, cracked one eye open and glanced at him with the faintest sigh. If Sokka was awake, she knew what that meant: the day was about to start.
She pushed the blankets off, preparing to rise and face the usual demands waiting beyond their quiet sanctuary. But just as she swung her legs over the side of the bed, Sokkaâs hand shot out, catching her waist with surprising firmness.
âNot yet,â he murmured, his voice low and lazy.
Azula froze, caught between the pull of responsibility and the unexpected softness in his tone. She looked down at his hand, then back to his face. That familiar stubborn grin tugging at his lips.
âYouâre supposed to be the reliable one,â she teased gently, trying to pull free.
Sokka tightened his grip, pulling her closer. âToday? Iâm unreliable. And besidesâŚâ He gave a small shrug, âMaybe you donât have to be reliable just yet, either.â
Azula blinked, surprised at the weight behind his words. For once, the world outside could wait. Today, staying wasnât a failure. It was a shared rebellion. She settled back against him, a quiet smile spreading as she let herself be pulled into that lazy, lingering moment.
Sokka smirked, his eyes gleaming with mischief as he shifted just enough to look down at her. âBesides, there is no way that youâd leave the bed when we make a bet. First one to leave this bed loses.â
Azulaâs smile flickered, sharp and confident. âYouâre on.â She responded confidently as she started grabbing pillows and twisting the bedsheets, her fingers working quickly as she began constructing a fortress around them. Something she seemed to have always wanted to do.
Sokka chuckled, watching her with amused admiration. âYou sure about that? Iâm pretty good at staying put.â
âMaybe,â she said, her voice low and playful. âBut Iâve got a secret weapon: patience.â
As the fortress grew bigger and better, their laughter mingled with the soft rustle of fabric, the room shrinking into a world where nothing mattered except the warmth they shared and the quiet joy of a day stolen from duty.
They nestled into the last pillow, the fortress complete: A cozy, uneven castle of soft fabric walls that cocooned them from the rest of the world. For a moment, neither moved, just looking at each other with something new flickering in their eyes; a quiet admiration, a fragile trust.
Azula let out a small, uncharacteristic laugh. âThis... this reminds me of something.â She hesitated, then the weight of the moment softened her usual steel. âWhen I was little, I used to build forts like this with Ty Lee and Mai.â
As Azula spoke, her fingers slowly found Sokkaâs hands beneath the fortress canopy, curling around them almost without realizing it. She pressed her palms gently against his, the warmth seeping through, grounding her as much as it grounded him.
Her cheeks flushed slightly as a rare, shy smile curved her lips. âOne time, I was so proud of my fort that I insisted it was impenetrable. But then a stray cat got inside and scared me so badly I screamed and fell right out of it.â she said with a quiet chuckle, squeezing his hands just slightly, as if to remind herself that here - now - she could let that go.
Sokka grinned, the softness in her voice making the story feel like a precious secret shared. âI canât picture that.â
Azula nudged him gently. âWell, youâre looking at a very different Azula today.â Her eyes sparkled with the small rebellion of a child finally allowed to play. Sokkaâs gaze dropped to their joined hands, a gentle smile tugging at his lips. He gave her hand a reassuring squeeze in return, wordlessly saying, Youâre safe here.
Sokka smiled, a little sheepishly. âYou know,â he began, âI wasnât always the fearless warrior or the reliable guy everyone thinks I am now.â
He glanced up at her, eyes sparkling with a hint of mischief. âWhen I was a kid, I was terrified of the dark. Not just a little bit- Iâd hide under my blankets with a little lantern until I fell asleep.â
He chuckled softly. âMy sister teased me endlessly about it. But honestly? That scared, scared little kid still shows up sometimes. Maybe especially on days like today.â
His voice dropped to a softer tone, warm with honesty. âSo if you ever see me staring into the shadows for too long, youâll know why.â
Azulaâs eyes twinkled as she gently squeezed his hands again. âSo thatâs why your girlfriend breathes fire and kisses you like a dragon. Maybe sheâs just helping you face the dark, one flame at a time.â
Sokka laughed, the warmth of the moment growing even softer. âYeah, I guess sheâs got my back - and my front - in more ways than one.â
They shared a quiet smile, the fortress around them feeling a little more like home.
A soft knock echoed at the door, gentle but persistent.
Azula and Sokka exchanged a glance, their fortress of pillows and sheets a snug fortress of rebellion.
Azula peeked out first, a sly smile tugging at her lips. âYes?â
The servant, a little flustered but respectful, cleared their throat. âPrincess Azula, Sir Sokka, Zuko is wondering why you havenât left your room yet. The dayâs responsibilities await.â
Sokka gave a lazy stretch and smirked. âTell Zuko to come see for himself.â
Azula nodded in agreement, her voice light but firm. âYes. He might learn something about taking a break.â
The servant blinked, then gave a small bow before retreating down the hall, leaving the pair to their fortress and their quiet rebellion.
Azulaâs eyes drifted toward the corner of the room, where her desk sat under the soft morning light. Scrolls neatly stacked, a silent reminder of the dayâs pressing duties.
She sighed, fingers twitching toward the edge of the bed as if willing herself up.
But before she could rise, Sokkaâs hand shot out, fingers curling around her wrist with a mischievous smirk. âHey now, donât forget the bet.â
Azula glanced at him, mock irritation flaring before a reluctant smile softened her expression. âRight. First to leave the bed loses.â
She settled back down with a dramatic huff, the corner of her mouth twitching in amusement. âFine. For now.â
Sokkaâs grin widened, and the fortress seemed to grow cozier still, the dayâs responsibilities safely tucked away, at least for a little longer.
Just a few minutes later, there was a firm knock at the door.
Zuko stepped inside, dressed sharply and ready to tackle the dayâs duties, his expression initially tight with frustration. âYou two havenât left the room yet? You know how much work waits-â
But then his eyes softened, catching sight of Sokka gently weaving strands of Azulaâs hair into a loose braid. Azulaâs eyes were half-closed, her whole body sinking into the comfort of the moment, so calm and unguarded it almost erased the harshness of their past.
Zukoâs frustration faltered, and he cleared his throat quietly, not wanting to disturb the fragile peace. Without being noticed, he slipped out of the room and headed to the kitchen. There, he pulled together a tray with two steaming cups of tea and a small plate of snacks.
When he returned, he set the tray down with a small, almost reluctant smile and said softly, âYou two could at least let me bring you something while you âwork.ââ
Sokka grinned, his fingers still threading through Azulaâs hair. âThanks, Zuko. This is exactly what we needed.â
Azula gave a sleepy nod, her eyes soft and unguarded, like the scared, scarred child he once knew had been replaced by something unexpected: a quiet innocence, fragile but real. In that moment, the room felt lighter, touched by something deeper than pain, something almost like family. Zuko felt the faintest smile tug at his lips, surprised by the warmth that stirred inside him.
Zuko lingered a moment longer, a small, reluctant smile still playing on his lips. Then, with a teasing edge, he added, âBut donât go leaving me alone when itâs time for dinner, alright?â With that, he quietly slipped out of the room, leaving behind a soft echo of warmth and familiar banter.
The door clicked softly shut behind Zuko, leaving the room wrapped in a calm stillness. Sokka and Azula shifted closer together, their fortress now a quiet haven around them. Slowly, they turned toward the window where golden sunlight spilled in, casting gentle patterns across the floor.
Azula rested her head on Sokkaâs shoulder as they both gazed outside, the city humming quietly beneath the warm glow. For a long moment, no words were spoken, just the soft rustle of the breeze and the steady beat of two hearts easing into something new.
Sokka finally broke the silence, voice low and thoughtful. âYou know⌠sometimes I think about all the things we should be doing⌠the plans, the duties. But maybe, just for today, they can wait.â
Azula sighed, a small smile tugging at her lips. âResponsibility doesnât disappear, but⌠maybe we donât have to carry it all alone. Maybe itâs okay to pause. To just be.â
They exchanged a glance, the weight of their pasts lingering but softened by the momentâs quiet promise.
âLater, maybe,â Sokka murmured.
Azula nodded, squeezing his hand gently. âLater, maybe.â

It was time to face her family. Her familyâs unacceptable actions. Normally, Azula would feel anxious when it came to confrontations. But her anger blended over her other feelings. She needed to hear it. Needed to hear that it wasnât her father who hired the Archer. And if it were indeed Iroh, well she hoped he wouldnât just get away with it. Because if he did⌠she wasnât sure she could stay strong any longer. Sokka might not want her in his life. Azula would feel truly alone in this world then. With her anger and deep thoughts, another part of her still wondered:
Why did Queen Kya let her go?
...........................................................................
Hakoda massaged his temples. His faith in his wife was endless. But he knew his son would not take this well. If he were anything like him in this, Sokka would walk through everyone to get to his wife.
âKya.â Hakoda sighed.
To this day, his wife never ceases to amaze him. Even in a serious situation such as this one, she could make him smile.
Out of breath, Sokka ran into the throne room, Keano, and Katara right behind him.
âIs it true?â he asked.
Kya nodded.
âMom why?â Sokka asked desperately, âHow could you just let her go?â
âShe was already set to it my son. It was the right thing to do.â Kya told him gently.
âItâs dangerousâŚsheâs⌠she is my wife, I had to know.â Sokka said.
âSokkaâŚâ Hakoda said.
âGet my ship ready immediately!â Sokka told Keano, who then left the room.
âWhy are you so angry? You can just get her.â Katara said.
âItâs⌠she might already be on Zhaoâs ship.â Sokka said, voice creaking.
âYou fear she might want to leave altogether.â Kya said.
Her comment made Sokka pause. He didnât even want to consider that possibility. No, he wouldnât fall into madness now. Every second was important. He had to rush.
âGo.â Hakoda said encouragingly, âGo to your wife Sokka.â
...........................................................................
Sokka paced on deck. Thirty minutes. The distance between the Northern Water Tribe and Kyoshi Bridge was thirty minutes. But it felt eternal to Sokka.
âYou didnât let your wound heal a second round. Sit down boy.â Keona said.
Sokka ignored him.
âArenât you worried she might talk, tell Zhao about the security and the entrance?â Keona said.
âEnough!â Sokka yelled.
Before Keano could start again, Sokka walked up to him angrily.
âEnough!â he fisted his shirt. Mad. He looked very mad, â This is the only and last time Iâm saying this: Nobody, nobody is ever going to say a word against Azula. Nobody is ever going to judge her.â
He let go of his shirt and turned around for everyone on deck to see his anger. To make sure no one would dare.
âElse youâre going to face dire consequences! Azula is my wife and Crown Princess! You will respect her!â
From that moment on, nobody spoke. Keono knew, that if Sokka reached this point with his anger, then itâs too serious. Silently, they came closer to their destination. Sokkaâs eyes were fixed on the metallic ship they were nearing. On the beautiful figure on it. Despite the distance, their eyes collided.
The ramps were ready and without saying a word to anyone, Sokka walked straight to Azula.
âWelcome to my ship Sokka.â Zhao said.
Keano thanked him instead, because Sokka was standing directly in front of Azula. As if there was no one else around them.
Azula felt his angry breathing on her face. He took her hand and walked to the nearest room in the ship tower. Fire Nation soldiers started to move, but the Water Tribe guards stopped them.
Sokka closed the door loudly behind them.
âWhat do you think youâre doing?â he asked. Azula narrowed her eyebrows at him too.
âFirst, you ask me to leave the tribe together, to our house, then you sneak away and put a knife on your throat? Are you crazy?â
âNo, Iâm not and stop yelling!â Azula yelled.
âI⌠wouldnât if, ⌠I.â he couldnât form sentences.
âI needed to get away! Needed to speak with Zhao myself!â Azula said.
âI told you we could go together Azula!â Sokka said.
âYou neednât worry, I havenât told him where I was or anything of the sort.â
âI wasnât worried about that!â
âWhy were you worried then?â
Azulaâs question made him pause for a moment.
âDo you âŚâ he squeezed his eyes shut, and opened it again, âDo you want to leave?â
His question, the worried tone changed Azulaâs demeanor.
âWould you let me?â she asked gently.
âAnswer me first.â Sokka said.
Stubbornness was a trait coming up in emotional situations. When someone wanted to hear a certain thing.
âYou neednât worry, I wonât tell anyone anything about the Tribe.â
âAzula.â Sokka neared her.
She didnât know if it was normal, but she so wanted to kiss him now.
âWould you let me Sokka?â she whispered.
Not being able to hold on longer, he gave in and answered, âI wouldnât want to.â
âWhy?â Azula asked.
Sokka took her face in his palms, stroking her cheeks with his thumbs.
âBecause ⌠I love you!â he said gently and genuinely.
Azulaâs heart clenched in the best way. He was everything at that moment. The world around them didnât exist.
âI love you Azula. I donât want you to leave.â
Sokka kissed her. She replied desperately, wildly. Her hands landed on his neck, pressing her body into his. Sokka lifted her, so she could sit on the table. Leaving her lips, he softly kissed her cheek and jawline, then the side of her neck.
âSokka.â Azula breathed, softly moaning.
He breathed her in, kissing her pulse on the neck. Azula grabbed his face and kissed his lips anew. She then hugged him tightly, burying her face in his neck, taking in his scent.
âLetâs go home Sokka.â she said smiling.
Sokka pulled away to look at her, smiling too.
âLetâs go to our home.â
...........................................................................
Admiral Zhao had seen Sokka quite often across the years. The Crown Prince truly meant it when he said something. He would protect his homeland with utmost seriousness. Sokka could also send smirks when he successfully striked his enemiesâ egos in meetings. Over the years, he got used to Sokkaâs stern façade. Yet it surprised him that the Crown Prince could get even more forbidding. His eyes screamed warnings and danger.
Zhao also saw the way Sokka looked at Azula when they walked out of the room, hand in hand. A completely new side of him. However, the unexpected development was that Azula looked at her husband the same way. Brightly and emotional. He recalled the worry in her voice when they talked before Sokka arrived.
âI havenât been in the Northern Water Tribe. I donât know where the Spirit Oasis is located.â Azula said.
Zhao sensed lying. He was sure her ship sailed from the Northern Water Tribe.
âWhere did the Yuyan Archer get the courage to attack us?â she asked.
âWe had to calm Zuko down, he was mad at us, unsure like you if we had anything to do with it. But I can assure you Azula, neither your father nor I have anything to do with it. Ozai would never risk your safety. It was Irohâs doing. The Yuyan Archer was his man.â Zhao explained.
âIf Sokkaâs and the Tribeâs safety is jeopardized, so is mine.â Azula said.
Zhao sensed something else behind her words. She tried to sound imperceptible.
âYou neednât worry.â Zhao said, nodding.
And here he was now. After Zuko and Azula, now Sokka needed reassurance. But it wouldnât be over. Ozai would be waiting for his report. Zhao sighed. He cared for the Royal Family and his nation, yet it took lots of energy out of him.
âAs I already explained to Azula, it was a similar incident from years ago: Iroh arranged it. He claims you were his target.â Zhao said.
âFrom the angle the Yuyan Archer was shooting, it couldâve hit Azula. I am not convinced that it was only me Admiral. And if it is true, it doesnât justify the carelessness to risk Azulaâs life, the Princess of the Fire Nation by the way.â Sokka told angrily, âI do hope Iroh will face dire consequences.â
âRest assured, he will. Ozai is at least as mad as you. Irohâs actions wonât go unpunished, and he will hopefully be banned from our court, losing his title.â Zhao explained.
âIâll try to trust Ozaiâs fatherly instincts and hope he wouldnât go as far as hurting his own daughter.â Sokka said.
âOf course not!â Zhao furrowed his eyebrows.
âTell Ozai, if in any way, I sense that you guysâ pressure Azula. If in any way, you are a danger to her, you canât start to imagine what Iâm capable of Admiral. The Northern Water Tribe will hunt down any threats to its Crown Princess.â Sokka threatened.
âThat is good to know, as Ozai wouldnât want his daughterâs husband to react in any other way. In fact, he is thankful to you, also stated in the letter I gave you.â Zhao gestured at the scroll in front of Sokka, âHe stays in your debt for protecting his daughter.â
âOf course I protect her, she is my wife.â
âAs long as Azula and you donât want to, Ozai wonât ever demand a right to the Spirit Oasis.â
Sokka was actually surprised at that. He truly hoped so. Step by step, they could work together one day. He nodded.
Upon entering the deck, Sokka caught Azula talking with a Fire Nation guard. She stopped when she saw him and Zhao. The guard greeted Sokka politely. He nodded at the guard and smiled. Zhao and Keano couldnât believe their eyes. Sokka never reacted positively to the Fire Nation in any way. Which again convinced Zhao that the Crown Prince genuinely cared for Azula. The surprised look on Captain Keanoâs face was another proof.
âAzula, your father wanted me to give you this.â Zhao held out a scroll.
âIâll read it when I get home, thank you.â Azula took the scroll, âSend my regards to father please.â
âI will.â Zhao nodded, âWatch out Azula. Go home safely.â
Sokka took her hand.
âYou too Admiral. Have a save sail. I do hope things will work out for the best for all of us.â Azula said.
âIt will.â Sokka said gently.
Hand in hand, they walked to their ship and sailed to Kyoshi Island. Their home.
...........................................................................
The sky looked gloomy. A light breeze of wind waved strands of Azulaâs hair, who held the railing while watching the sky. Fog lay heavy, the lanterns the only light.
âIs the thunderstorm you mentioned the other day coming?â Azula asked.
âYes. When we arrive on the island, we need to rush. I have to meet up with the guards there and then Iâll come home. We wonât be able to leave for a while.â Sokka explained.
âThat bad?â Azula asked.
âYouâll see.â Sokka replied, âItâs not comparable with the Fire Nation storms.â
Azula caught blood on his shirt.
âSokka, your wound is bleeding.â she said worried.
Sokka felt the pain throughout the day. But it hasnât been as important as reaching Azula.
âDid Katara not heal another round?â she asked.
âNo.â he replied.
âLetâs get inside and have a look.â she said.
They went into Sokkaâs room on the ship. Azula gathered the cloth and water and sat next to him on the bed.
âYou need to take your shirt off.â
Sokka did as she told. Azula couldnât admire his muscles this time, because since they were on the ship, there seemed something off. They had a lot to talk about. Although he smiled at her on Zhaoâs barge, he seemed different now. She started undoing his bandage, trying to focus on his wound for now.
âWhy didnât you let Katara heal it?â she asked.
âDidnât want to.â he simply said.
The wound wasnât as bad as she had thought. The first healing helped. All the blood made it seem much worse.
âWhy not?â she asked, dipping the cloth into water.
âAs long as you wonât accept the oasis water, I wonât either.â
Azula stopped what she was doing. The candlelight made the blue of his eyes glassy. A knot formed in her throat. She was out of words. Before her emotions got the better end of her, she gently cleaned his wound.
Sokka watched her. She felt warm. All he needed was for her to stay close like this. The scent of her hair calmed him.
After cleaning his wound, Azula took a small self-sticking bandage. Before she could place it on his shoulder, she noticed something on his lower back. A long and thick scar.
"Prince Sokkaâs biggest fight"
"Upon Prince Sokkaâs orders, Princess Katara was brought to safety, and he took to fighting by himself earning a deep and life threating scar."
It must be the scar he received on Whaletail Island. The one she read about days ago. His shoulderâs injury was nothing compared to that. Azula felt angrier at Iroh. Her heart broke at the sight of Sokkaâs scars. He got them while protecting people he cared about. Despite everything he endured, he still managed to have a wonderful heart. She counted herself lucky to have him as her husband.
Azula placed the bandage on his shoulder. She held back from crying. When she was done, she placed the items on the chest of drawers next to the bed.
"This feels much more healing than the oasis water," Sokka said, smiling.
Azula smiled back sadly and put her forehead on his shoulder, careful of the bandage. She placed her hands on his arm and held tightly.
âSokka.â she whispered.
He buried his face in her hair, closing his eyes as well. This. This was what they both needed. They were each otherâs oasis.

Chapter 6: The Northern Water Tribe
FF.Net & AO3
The plot was planned from the beginning. Many events were already incorporated. However, during the writing process, I changed the direction of the story. While the political situation is important, the focus has to be on the romance between Azula and Sokka. Firstly, because this event revolves around them, and secondly, because the chapters would be too short to explore everything in detail. There are things I'd like to work on and develop further. Who knows, maybe in the future. But for now, the focus has to be on Sokkla. My original plan for the journey to the Northern Water Tribe and their stay there was completely different; Azula's interaction with her in-laws one of them. However, after careful consideration (and real life reasons), I decided to choose this route. I hope you understand and aren't disappointed. Personally, I am very glad with everything. Especially about our Crown Prince in the next chapter *winks*. Enjoy reading, and thank you so much for your interest and comments! <3
The Great Gates of Azulon was one of the most impressive systems in the world. As she saw the system of the Water Tribe, she wasnât less impressed though. When they passed the gates, the view in front of Azula remined her of paintings. Mountains protecting a city, whose architecture couldnât even be missed from afar. Snow lay on the top of the mountains, but not on the city since it wasnât winter season yet. The temperature slightly colder than on Kyoshi Island.
A historical moment awaited both the Northern Water Tribe and the Fire Nation. Azula was entering the Tribe.
Sokka was being carried. She stood close to him, deciding not to look at any faces, for she was sure they werenât kind.
âBring the Crown Princess safely inside the palace and inform our arrival to the King and Queen.â Katara told the guards at the entrance.
âQueen Kya is already in the Spirit Oasis.â a guard said.
Azula bit back the retort on her lips. She wouldnât be welcomed in the Spirit Oasis anyway. She was so close to what her father and her ancestors had wanted. Yet she didnât even take in the excitement to be in the Northern Water Tribe.
After watching Sokka being carried away, she went into the palace. It was very different from the Fire Nation Palace. Certainly admirable too, but the current situation didnât allow it. She was guided to a room on the third floor. It was Sokkaâs, their, room. She sat on a couch trying to process everything that happened. Tears formed in her eyes again. Sokka shielded her from an attack. In that state, he even made sure she was brought here with them. She hoped and prayed to God that he would be healed.
Someone stood at the door, which she hadnât closed. Upon seeing the man, she froze.
âMay I come in?â he asked.
âYes,â she stood up, âOf course.â
An older version of Sokka. Same hair and eye colors, strong, and broad like him. And from the way he waited for her permission to enter the room, although this palace belonged to him, just as respectful she thought.
âWelcome to the Northern Water Tribe, Crown Princess Azula.â King Hakoda said.
âThank you.â Azula said.
âI wished we could have met under better circumstances. Are you well? Do you want to be checked by a healer?â he asked.
âNothing happened to me, Iâm fine. I hope Sokka will be too soon.â
âHe will be.â the King smiled sadly, âMy wife is with him. I left when everything seemed fine, to come greet you.â
âThat is very kind of you.â Azula said.
âYou look tired. If you need anything, please donât hesitate to ask. This is your home too.â he said kindly, âZuko is an ally of ours. Surely there is going to be an explanation. I am saying this, because I do not want you to feel unsafe here in any way.â
Azula bit the insides of her cheeks and nodded, to keep her eyes from welling up.
âSokka will be brought here too.â Hakoda said and left.
The King seemed kind. It was unusual to see a friendly face, since all the faces except for Sokkaâs gave her looks of mistrust and hate. Yet the King, who faced invaders coming from her very own family, treated her so politely, she wanted to cry. She saw where Sokka got his big heart from. She felt like she didnât deserve to be treated so nicely by them. Last week she was looking for ways to betray them.
With those thoughts and a hollowness in her chest, she waited. An hour later, Sokka was carried into the room. The blood was all gone, but he looked exhausted. Relieve washed over Azula.
Yet the good feeling was short lived because Katara said, âWe are going to stay here.â
âI am staying here already. I will call if something is needed.â Azula said.
âYou wonât be alone with him.â she said.
Azula was having enough. This was going too far. All comments and looks aside, that they would expect that she might hurt Sokka was too much to take. She tried to stay calm for Sokkaâs sake. He was injured and the last thing he needed was yelling beside his bed.
âWe live together with him, in the same house Katara!â Azula said.
Before things went further, Queen Kya entered along with her husband. A beautiful woman. Clearly she had been crying over her sonâs injury, her eyes red. She looked Azula over. Silence stretched in the room.
âYou should eat and drink something.â she said.
She spoke with a gentle voice to her too, and Azula wondered how Katara was related to the King and Queen.
âThank you. I would like to stay with Sokka.â Azula said politely.
Sokka stirred and everybody gathered around him, except Azula. Sokkaâs eyes were searching for her.
âSokka, are you feeling better?â Kya asked, âRest more, do not rush.â
âWhere isâŚâ he groaned.
Hakoda looked to a sad Azula.
âWe should give the couple privacy.â he said.
Azula felt scrutiny from Katara, but she listened to her father nonetheless.
âI need to heal you one more time with the Oasis water for the wound to fully close. Iâll drop by later.â Katara said and they all left.
âAzula, are you okay?â Sokka asked weakly.
She walked to the bed and sat on the side turning her body to him.
âYou took an arrow and ask me if I am okay?â she asked, âIâm not hurt.â
âGood. No one can lay a hand on you.â
âYou should rest.â Azula said, sniffing,
âHey now, Azula?â Sokka worried.
Azula had tried hard to keep her emotions in check. But the question broke the dam. She buried her face in her hands and cried. Everything was too much. Meeting her brother, the attack, Sokka risking his life for her, the judging looks of others, this huge place she felt uncomfortable in and the nice way Sokkaâs parents treated her with. She didnât know what to feel or think anymore. So, she just let it all out with tears.
âAzula, come here, look at me.â Sokka said trying to sit up.
âNo, Sokka.â Azula stopped him, âIâm okay.â
Sokka looked very worried.
âItâs just, your parents, theyâre so nice and you, you protected me andâŚâ she sniffed and tried to her tears.
âAzulaâŚâ
âI want to go back to our house Sokka, I shouldnât be here.â
Sokka pulled at her arm and Azula didnât protest. She lay next to him, putting her head sideways, in the other direction, on his uninjured arm, holding onto it, while Sokka caressed her hair.
âOur house.â he said. His heart broke at her tears, yet he smiled at her thinking of Kyoshi Island as her home.
âI promise, weâll go as soon as possible. Itâs all going to be fine. Iâm here.â Sokka said.
âThank you.â
âI vowed a promise to you, and I intent to keep it. Iâm always going to protect you.â
Azula held tightly on his arm until sleep took over both of them. Maybe there were things they needed to talk about. But right now they were tired and needed a break.
They slept through the night and Azula woke up first. She took in the sight of Sokka, his bandage. Taking the duvet, she pulled it over his shirtless torso. It wasnât the time for admiring his muscled chest. She needed to change but her clothes were on Kyoshi Island. On the couch, she saw some in Water Tribe fashion brought for her. But before she could do anything she intended to, voices next door caught her attention. Azula walked into the hallway.
âHe needs one more healing process and then he should be in his old condition again.â Katara said.
âEven if not, heâd still go.â
Go where? Azula thought and neared the door, standing in the hallway listening.
âHopefully he wonât tell Azula.â
âAre we sure it was a Yuyan Archer?â
âZuko confirmed it. But even if Sokka trusts him, I wouldnât be so sure. What if it was him or Azula?â a third voice asked, âIâm just saying, we shouldnât trust them too much. I want to for Sokkaâs sake, but this is our Tribe, and we canât risk it. Never forget the past.â
âI understand what you mean Master Pakku. But I somehow think it might be Iroh again. Remember what he pulled years ago on Whaletail Island.â Keona said, âBut the fact that the attacker was on Zukoâs ship, thatâs what worries me. I wouldnât expect it from Zuko normally, but as long as we donât go to that meeting, we can never be sure.â
A Yuyan Archer? Could that be real? They were officially in the Fire Nation military. Why would they do something like that? Her father couldnât have been ordering something like this. Not only because it was wrong, but because he was no fool.
âWhen Sokka goes later, he hopefully finds out more.â Katara said, âAnd I really think we should consider what to do with Azula. Before Sokka falls in love with her because he already forms feelings I know. And before she learns more about our homeland and especially before she finds out the location of the Spirit Oasis.â
âThe Princess is lucky that the archer was on Zukoâs ship. If it had been any other Fire Nation ship, she wouldnât be welcome here at all.â Master Pakku said.
Azula grew angry, shocked, and dizzy.
âWhere is Sokka going?â she entered the room surprising them.
âPrincess Azula.â Keona panicked.
âAnswer me!â Azula said.
âYou shouldnât concern yourself with that.â Katara said.
Azula had enough of this. She tried to stay respectful, to show understanding. Their mistrust was justified to a certain point yes, but there was a limit. Her life had been in danger too.
âI am included in all of this even if you try to push me aside. I became Crown Princess of this tribe, and I have rights! You will answer me now!â Azula demanded, âWhere is Sokka going?â
âAdmiral Zhao is invited to Kyoshi Bridge, to talk about the latest happening.â Captain Keano said.
âWhatâs going on.â Sokka came into the room.
âSokka, you should rest a little more, do not rush.â Katara said worried.
âNo, I want to know whatâs happening here, I heard yelling.â he turned to Azula, âAzula?â
She looked at him, angry and exhausted, âWhere you going to tell me that Zhao is coming to meet?â she asked, her voice cracking.
âYes.â he said.
âTell me the truth Sokka.â
âI really was, but I didnât want you to be hurt. I mean, I still need to find out who the Yuyan Archer was tasked by.â
âSurely not my father.â Azula said, feeling dizzier.
âZhao stated it in his letter, but I need to face him or your father Azula.â Sokka explained, trying to calm her down.
Azula lost her balance, trying to hold onto the table. But she didnât watch and held a vase instead which broke. One of her fingers had a small cut, but it swelled fast with blood.
âAzula!â Sokka and to her surprise, Katara rushed to her, but she didnât want them.
âStay away from me.â Azula said and walked into the bedroom.
Of course, Sokka followed.
âAzulaâŚâ
âI am going. I want to leave this place, I donât want to stay here any longer.â Azula said.
âWe will but not now, not like this.â Sokka said, âAzula let me see your finger, itâs bleeding. Katara can heal it with the OasiâŚâ
âDonât!â Azula interrupted, raising her finger to silence him, âI donât want anything to do with that Oasis! Nothing! Even if itâs my last breath, I donât want its water. Everything that happens is because of it! Lu Tenâs death, this marriage, your injury, people here looking at me like I am responsible for everything!â she yelled, tears again leaving her eyes.
âAzula, no one thinks.â
âGo.â Azula interrupted.
Sokka paused at her tone.
âSokka please go. I need to be alone, please.â she said.
Tears in her eyes, hurt and exhaustion. Sokka welled up too. He just wanted to take her in his arms and make everyone responsible for misery pay hard.
âI just need a moment alone.â she said.
Sokka nodded, âIâll be near. Weâll talk.â he said unwillingly and walked into the hallway.
Azula needed a plan. She had to know what was going on. Had to meet Zhao herself. But how? The desk in the room caught her attention. She saw official stamps on it, stamps from the Crown Prince. An idea came to her mind. She wrote a letter, for Zhao to sail to Kyoshi Bridge now and put it on the back of a hawk on the window. Then she dressed in her Water Tribe clothes and opened the door to the balcony, since she was sure Sokka was in the hallway. The balcony was connected to several rooms and emergency stairs. In comparison to the Fire Nation Palace, there were less guards here.
Azula slid her way out. They underestimated her. Her sneaking skills and her willpower when she was angry and courage took over.
Several boats were lined up on the âbrooklike-waterstreets.â But she would be faster on her feet. When she reached the coast, sailors were taken aback upon seeing her.
âI need to sail to Kyoshi Bridge.â Azula announced.
âYour Highness, we were given no such information.â one of them said.
âDoes my word mean nothing to you?â Azula asked sternly.
âSince there was an attack, the King and Queenâs permission is needed.â
They seemed sincere and talked politely. But Azula had a mission now. She had to take drastic measures. She rapidly walked onto a ship.
âYour HighnessâŚâ
âSail!â Azula said, pulling out her knife and putting it on her neck, âOr I wonât hesitate to use it right here!â
Everyone was aghast.
âI mean it!â Azula yelled.
âYour Highness, we should call for Crown Prince Sokka, he should go with you.â
In the Fire Nation, an official announcement had to be made by the royal family, an official introduction of a new member with a title. Only then did the title acquire significance. As far as she knew, it was the same in the Northern Water Tribe. Azula, of course, hadn't yet earned that right.
âI will sail alone.â Azula said.
âDo as she says.â
Everyone turned around to the new voice. Never would Azula expect the view in front of her.
âYour Majesty.â the sailors greeted her respectfully.
âI give permission to Crown Princess Azula to sail to Kyoshi Bridge.â Queen Kya announced.
They did as they were told. The captain of the ship got ready. Azula watched the Queen, the Queen watched her. Why would Kya do this? The question haunted her, as the Northern Water Tribe grew smaller. She left Sokka behind, feeling slightly guilty. Yet she couldnât stop thinking about why his mother did this.

I think everyone will really like especially the next chapter because I really enjoyed the events between Azula and Sokka there. ^^

Chapter 5: Family
FF.Net & AO3
Waking up after a peaceful sleep felt different. Waking up in his arms felt safe. Sokka was still asleep and Azula watched him. She took in the masculine, yet at the same time soft details on his face. A strand of hair was hanging loosely on his forehead. She couldnât fight the urge to touch it and wondered how he looked with his hair down.
He stirred and she instantly took away her hand. When he opened his blue eyes, she grew bashful.
âGood morning.â Sokka said smiling.
âGood morning.â she said quietly.
After a moment of gazing, Sokka broke the silence.
âSeems like the storm has stopped. Didnât hear anything.â he said awkwardly.
âI guess so.â Azula said, still quietly.
Not knowing what else to say, and growing aware of his arms around her, Azula moved to sit up. Sokka instantly let go. He would have loved to keep holding her though.
âDo you want breakfast?â he asked.
âBreakfast sounds good.â Azula replied.
âGood.â he said, smiling, âI should wash my face.â
She felt silly for standing up, when in fact she would have loved to stay in his arms, it felt so good. Sighing, she stood up and started getting ready for breakfast.
Upon reaching the dining room, they were greeted by another face.
âGood morning Your Highnesses.â Katara greeted them.
âKatara?â Sokka said surprised, âI didnât expect you today. Is everything all right?â
âYes, everything is fine. Is this how you greet your sister?â Katara asked, sipping her coffee.
âNo.â Sokka spread his arms, smiling.
Azula smiled. She loved her brother, but Katara and Sokka seemed to have a special bond.
âI hope youâre faring well.â Katara said, after they all sat at the breakfast table.
âI am.â Azula said, âThe island is beautiful.â
âAlready getting used to it?â Katara asked, giving her brother a meaningful look, which he returned.
âI havenât seen everything yet. But I got used to the house.â Azula explained.
She sensed mistrust coming from Katara. Behind her nice façade, there was awareness. No doubt she was informed about Azula sneaking to the harbor.
âI saw Ty Lee. She enjoys her time a lot here. And she told me she is going to stay in the hut with the girls.â Katara said.
âShe does. Ty Lee can cope well with changes.â Azula said.
âHow are mom and dad?â Sokka asked.
âBusy planning their wedding anniversary.â Katara said.
âOh, I totally forgot about that.â
âNot surprised.â Katara said, aiming her gaze at Azula.
Sokka coughed. A warning.
âThey canât wait to meet their daughter-in-law.â Katara said.
Azula didnât know what to say. Since their parents lived in the Northern Water Tribe, she didnât want to mention anything related to the Spirit Oasis. Not when they were on good terms with Sokka now.
She felt him staring at her expectant.
âMe too.â was all she said.
They enjoyed their breakfast with Katara and Sokka bantering. It was strange. She saw Sokkaâs powerful gaze many times. Both siblings could get serious. But they acted silly around each other.
After finishing breakfast, Sokka and Katara waited for Azula to dress up at the front door. Upon seeing her, Sokka smiled brightly to which his sister raised her eyebrows. Azula assumed they had talked about her when she was getting ready in her room.
âSokka, the guards are ready.â The Captain of the Royal Guards. Azula recognized him. He was there at their wedding ceremony.
âAzula, I shall introduce you to Keano, Captain of our Royal Guards,â Sokka said.
âItâs a pleasure to meet you Your Highness.â Keano said, bowing his neck.
âLikewise, Captain.â Azula said.
Like Katara, Keano also looked at her with awareness. She needed to be more careful around those two.
âAnd to our Royal Guards.â Sokka said.
The rest of the guards were lined up and they introduced themselves one by one with their names. Unlike Keano, they actually smiled at her. Azula greeted them friendlier.
âAlright, letâs go.â Sokka said.
He stretched out his hand, smiling and looking expectantly. Azula looked at his stretched hand trying hard not to smile in front of everyone. She slid her hand into his. And like the first time, at their wedding ceremony, she felt sheltered in his strong hand. It felt better now still. Warm and ⌠she didnât want to think of that now.
They walked on the front, with Katara and Keona right behind them. All the other guards sided up. Some islanders still gave her looks of mistrust. Others greeted the new Royal Pair with genuine smiles. They introduced themselves and congratulated them. Wishing them a happy marriage and healthy babies. Azula looked appalled at that, while Sokka smirked mischievously her way.
The day passed quickly. After eating together, Sokka asked Katara and the guards to stay behind. He took Azula up a hill. The stars lined up the sky, making the sea glow with light.
âThe most stars shine this time of year.â Sokka explained.
âIt looks beautiful.â Azula said.
âNot as beautiful as you.â
Azula turned her face to him. She surely didnât expect any of this when she sailed away from her homeland.
âDid you like today?â he asked.
âYes. But I wouldnât do it every day, I mean, meeting so many people.â
âYou donât have to do that.â
Sokka raised a hand and gently put it on her cheek.
âI thought you were beautiful the moment I saw you.â he said.
Azula was sure he was feeling the heat on her cheek. She had mixed emotions but most of all, hope shone in her eyes.
She teared her eyes from him and looked at his lips.
Sokka neared his face slowly to Herâs until their foreheads touched. Azula closed her eyes at that. He kissed her. A tender and slow first kiss. Sokka pulled away, just a bit. He needed to see her face, to read her eyes before kissing her again. He dove in. Still tender but with more confidence. He pulled her closer with his other arm, and she put her hands on his chest. The kiss grew firm.
Their moment was interrupted by Captain Keano with a cough.
âApologies, but there is a problem.â he said, looking towards Azula.
Sokka didnât like that look, âWhat is it?â he asked annoyed.
âZuko entered our waters at Whaletail Island, âKeona explained, âWithout even asking us for permission.â
Azulaâs face lost color.
âHow⌠Why? Do you know why?â Sokka asked, while they all started walking down the hill.
âThe recent message I received states he wants to see his beloved sister.â Katara interrupted.
If a look could murder, Azula would be dead under her stare. Sokka looked at Azula warily.
âWe havenât seen each other after the marriage decision has been made. I donât know exactly why, but ⌠I should talk with him Sokka.â Azula said.
Sokka scanned her eyes. They were glassy. What could go wrong he thought. This might be their first test in their marriage. A test to see if he could trust her, to make her happy. And a test to see if she would betray his trust in any way.
âSend word to our soldiers to let Zukoâs ship sail to Kyoshi Bridge. But only as far as Kyoshi Bridge, weâre going to meet him there.â Sokka said Keano.
âHave you lost your mind?â Katara asked appalled.
âYouâre not thinking clearly boy. This could be a trick. The entrance on the wedding day was strictly planned and overwatched. This is not. We have rules: No one can enter our sea without our permission and no one except the Royal Barge last week, is allowed to pass Kyoshi Bridge.â Keona explained.
Kyoshi Bridge was a control point between Kyoshi Island and Whaletail Island. The Northern Water Tribe had several controlling points on their sea as well as their mainland.
âI know!â Sokka raised his voice, âBut Zuko never broke the law. He was also not informed by us about this marriage and if he acts like this there is clearly a reason behind it. I am not saying he can sail comfortably on this island: just as far as our control point and we meet him on the ship! We donât need to be geniuses to know that Zuko and Ozai are very different.â
Azula gained strength by his stance.
âWhat are you waiting for? Get our ship ready.â Sokka said.
When nobody moved he got mad.
âThis is an order, and nobody has a say against my decision! Get the ship ready and send word to Zuko and our soldiers on Whaletail Island and Kyoshi Bridge right now!â
The tone of his voice startled even Azula a bit. Keano gave her one last look of mistrust and turned around to leave.
âI need to have a word with you Sokka.â Katara said and walked near a house.
Azula nodded at Sokka, and he went to his sister.
âKataraâŚâ
âListen, do not forget that you donât know her.â Katara started.
âKataraâ
âYouâre mislead by your soft spot for her! I was fearing this might happen, but I didnât expect it so soon.â Katara said.
Sokka put his hands on her shoulders.
âEverything will be fine. I need you to stay by my side as my sister, like you always did Katara. Itâs our waters, we are in control of the situation. And we know Zuko.â he said.
âButâŚâ
âKatara, if the roles had been reversed, I would destroy the things on my way just to see if my sister is alright.â
That bastard was pulling on her heartstrings now. Because she knew he would do that for her.
So, she nodded.
âOh, and one more thing: I am not mislead by anything and have not a soft spot.â Sokka said and walked to Azula.
âYeah, right.â Katara said to herself.
When they reached the dock, Sokka helped Azula on the ramp of their ship. He pulled her close to him, not letting go of her arm and stared directly into her eyes. There it was. The look she saw days ago when he caught her sneaking. The warning look of Crown Prince Sokka, not gentleman husband Sokka she grew to like.
âI trust you.â he said.
A gentle warning. But she also sensed fear coming from Sokka. Fear that the last two days may not have changed anything.
...................................................................................................
Fire Nation was rich in technology. Their ships were the best. Water Tribe ships were very good and stable too, but they needed some of the new inventions. Which hasnât been possible so far because the Fire Nation didnât want to share. But things might change from now on.
They stopped next to Zukoâs opulent royal ship. The Crown Prince of the Fire Nation, now his brother-in-law, which felt weird to Sokka after years of politically meeting the guy, signaled his crew to open the ramp that would connect their ships. Automatic ramps. Unlike his, which would take a little longer to open. From the outside it looked like a small battle of ego. Zuko with his luxurious ship and inventions, Sokka with his massive security system and signals as well as connections with his islands and control points. And all without the Fire Nation Technology. He worked hard for all of this. His parents and sister worked hard. His soldiers worked hard. But seeing the luxury of the Fire Nation annoyed him a bit. Never ever did it annoy him. But right now, it did and he knew why: He didnât want Azula to think of him as incapable or less or anything of the sort.
Silence was in the air. Everyone staring at the people on the other ship.
âAzula, come.â Zuko said. His demeanor changed when he looked at her. The harshness fading.
Azula moved her head sending signal to her brother. Zuko understood.
âYou can come to my ship too Crown Prince Sokka.â he said mocking. Then he looked to Katara, slightly smirking, âPrincess Katara, of course youâre welcome too.â
She sent her murder glare to him.
Captain Keona wanted to protest, but Sokka stretched out his hand to stop him. Nodding at Azula, they crossed the ramp to Zukoâs ship. His crew and guard regarded Azula with respect.
âZuko what are you doing here?â Azula asked bitterly.
âWhy wasnât I informed about this marriage?â he demanded.
âI would have thought Ozai would inform you.â Sokka said.
âIâve always tried to work peacefully with you. Despite everything that happened in the past. I deserved to hear it from you.â Zuko said.
âI know and I always appreciated it to have you as a trusting partner. But how could I know there was lack of communication? We had our own problems here Zuko. And they werenât small.â Sokka explained.
âIâll speak to my sister alone.â Zuko said.
Azula went to the railing followed by Zuko.
âAzula, be honest with me: Did you agree with this?â he asked.
âI did. I mean⌠yes I did.â she answered.
âYou can come back with me. Iâll try to find a way out of this.â
âZuko no, I canât.â she said, âListen, this is a good thing. Itâll help everyone I think.â
Zuko raised an eyebrow at her statement.
âDo you want to stay?â he asked.
âWe both have a role.â Azula said.
âYou didnât answer my question.â Zuko said.
âI want to stay Zuko.â
âDo they treat you well?â
âYes. Sokka is the one who allowed your ship to sail here and made it possible for us to meet. Thatâs no small feat Iâd say. I mean, you broke their rule.â
Zuko sighed.
âFather will ask you about the Spirit Oasis Azula, keep that in mind. But I officially have a place on his right from now on. My tasks on the outer cities were successfully fulfilled.â he said.
âThatâs great. You earned it.â Azula said proudly.
âAnd my priority is to keep you out of this. And working with Sokka, with the Northern Water Tribe has always been my wish anyway.â
Azula asked him about the attack on Whaletail Island, and they talked about their father.
Sokka tried to give them privacy. He really tried not to listen, but he heard Zuko ask Azula to go with him. It strained his nerves. What would he do if Azula refused to go back to Kyoshi Island with him? The thought made him feel dizzy and frustrated.
âDo what makes you feel good. Do what you believe in is the right path Azula.â Zuko told her earnestly. âAnd donât forget, that you have a brother who will have your back.â
âIt goes the other way around too.â Azula said smiling.
They were good. Especially after Ursa left, their bond became stronger. But he has been away often. And now she was away.
Azula jumped and hugged him powerfully. He hugged her back. She managed to keep her tears in her eyes. She didnât know when she would see him again.
They returned to the others. Sokka kept his gaze on Azula. She didnât seem sad when she said goodbye to her father. But now he saw tears in her eyes. Which showed that she cared about Zuko. Another reason for Sokka to maintain a good friendship with him.
âWe had an agreement and similar opinions as well as goals in the past. But this is different.â Zuko told Sokka.
âI know. You really neednât worry Zuko. Azulaâs wellbeing is my priority.â Sokka said, determined.
âWeâll write each other. And weâll meet.â Zuko said to Azula. But he looked at Sokka, silently expecting him to understand that his sister would have the freedom to write him letters.
âHave a good sail Zuko.â Azula and Sokka said.
âYou too.â Zuko said, then turned to look at Katara, âGoodbye Princess Katara.â he mocked again.
She stared at him distastefully.
Azula watched her brotherâs ship sail away in the darkness. She turned to Sokka and smiled brightly, which warmed his heart.
âThank you Sokka. For all of this. For making us meet, for not doing anything to my brother.â she said.
âThank you Azula.â he said smiling.
They waited there. Just gazing at each other brightly. Until Azula gave him a hug. Burying her face in his neck. After trying to understand what happened and keeping his surprise in check, Sokka hugged her back. He closed his eyes and smiled. This felt good. He felt good.
Katara and the guards were taken aback. That they would grow close in such a short amount of time was unexpected.
Was it instinct or something else, Sokka didnât know. But he wanted to open his eyes and look in the direction of Zukoâs ship. In time to see an arrow directed at them. Sokka jerkily turned around with Azula in his arms. The masked man was far away on a moving ship, but his arrow struck Sokkaâs left shoulder perfectly. He groaned loudly at the pain.
âSokka!â both Azula and Katara screamed.
A group of guards were already on the move to Zukoâs ship, where the attacker still was.
Katara examined Sokkaâs shoulder, a worried Keano next to her. Azula held Sokkaâs hand.
âWe need to get out the arrow for me to heal you.â Katara said, tears in her eyes.
Sokka kept groaning. Azula felt like crying while she watched him pain. Katara pulled out the arrow with the help of Keano and Sokka let out a scream squeezing Azulaâs hand.
Then, Katara pulled out a bottle and slowly poured it over his wound to start the healing process.
âI donât have enough.â Katara said crying, âItâs not enough for the first process for the wound to start closing. We need to go the Oasis quickly.â
âLetâs get ready everyone, weâre sailing to the Water Tribe!â Keano announced to the crew.
Then he glanced at Azula.
âSomebody has to stay with the Crown Princess.â he said.
âNo!â Sokka groaned.
âShe canât come with us Sokka. Weâll make sure she is safe on Kyoshi Island.â Katara said.
Before Azula could protest, Sokka yelled with the last drops of his strength, âNo!â
âAzula is coming with us. Itâs an order.â he said.
âBut Sokka.â Katara said.
âKatara please.â he said.
Deciding to trust her brother and with the worry about his condition getting worse if they lingered any longer, they all sailed to the Northern Water Tribe. To the Spirit Oasis. Giving their enemy the perfect opportunity.
Azula didnât let go of Sokkaâs hand, didnât leave his side. Not only because he was wounded, but she felt alone. People staring at her, not trusting her, thinking she might have something to do with all of this. She turned to look at Zukoâs ship, hoping her brother was all right. Who has that been? She looked down at Sokka again and who gazing at her. He was in pain, losing blood, endangering his life to keep her safe. And yet, he was smiling up at her, squeezing her hand, to encourage her.
...................................................................................................
Zuko and his guards ran towards the man who just shot an arrow to Sokkaâs ship. They pulled up his mask, but even before that he was sure who it was. Only one group of people could shoot an arrow with perfect precision. Water Tribe guards were already on his deck too. Zuko explained to them the situation and sent word to the Admiral on the Northern Water Tribe shores. His judgment would be in the Fire Nation because he had to find out more about the motives. To be sure about his guess.

Chapter 4: Warming Hearts
FF.Net & AO3
The next two days passed with Azula giving Sokka the cold shoulder. She didnât even look his way. No good mornings or good nights. Nothing.
On the third day, Sokka came home earlier from his meetings with the guards. Since Azula avoided him, he gave her space, so that she could eat alone in peace, hoping it would help their current unpleasant situation. But today, he decided to take a step forward.
âHey.â he said, upon entering the dining room.
Azula seemed to be finishing her food. Sokka could see hurt behind those angry amber eyes. She stood up and made to leave, but Sokka instantly blocked her way.
âCan we talk?â he asked.
She tried to walk past him this time.
âAzula!â
âIâm tired.â she said and left the room.
âIt hasnât been my intention to hurt you. I should not have been that harsh.â he said.
Azula stopped in the hallway and turned around to look at him. Sokka seemed desperate. She could see it.
âI want to make this work Azula. Our marriage. I⌠I was hoping you might too. I need you Azula. I really want to make our nations to be at peace with each other. To not live with hatred and mistrust. We can work on it together you and I.â
Azula watched him hopelessly.
âGood night Sokka.â she said and left.
..............................................................................................
Later that night, Sokka went to bed, hoping sleep would help. It all felt frustrating to him at the moment. Laying on his back on the bed, an arm tucked under his neck, Sokka recalled a conversation with his parents before his marriage to Azula. They had been hopeful and told him they had faith in this marriage.
When the idea of marriage was first discussed he was skeptical. But over time, he grew warmer to the notion of it. Deep down the idea of marrying the Fire Nation Princess intrigued him. And the moment he saw her on their ship, something snapped inside of him, he was sure he felt it.
Yet Azula had looked at him as if she didnât believe anything he had told her earlier. But he wouldnât give up. He didnât regret marrying her.
A scream startled him, and he jumped out of bed. Recognizing Azulaâs voice and rushed to her room.
..............................................................................................
Azula woke up gasping, her body covered in sweat. The bad dream she had was intense.
Her door flew open and Sokka rushed inside.
âAzula.â he said, looking worried and scared.
âIâm okay.â she said reassuringly. He looked like he would eliminate any harm in an instant. She wanted to reassure him.
Sokka gave her a glass of water that was on her desk.
âThank you.â She took the glass and drank.
âI can guarantee you one thing: No one, no one can harm you here or make you do anything you do not want to. I want you to know that.â Sokka said seriously and left.
Azula couldnât fall asleep again that night. Sokkaâs intense gaze didnât leave her mind. She had seen him angry when they argued on the shore. But this time he had such a look in his eyes, so intense it touched her. The determination in his words planted something in her heart. She kept recalling his gaze and his promise.
And the fact that he had been shirtless added up to the intensity of that moment.
Morning arrived with a heavy fog around the island. Azula dressed up, spraying her favorite perfume. Standing in front of the mirror, she glanced at the wedding necklace Sokka had made for her. She took a new liking for it today. It was covered in small, sparkling stones.
Sokka wasnât anywhere around. Part of her was glad about it. After last night, she wasnât sure where they were standing. If something changed or not. Another part of her wished heâd walk out of a room.
After finishing breakfast, she took her coffee and walked out into the garden. Ty Lee was staying with the girls in the hut. Thinking giving Azula and Sokka privacy was important. So, Azula decided to enjoy her alone time exploring the house more. After walking around the garden for a while, she took a short nap.
It was already afternoon when she woke up. She entered the comfortable room with bookshelves and a fireplace. Azula looked at the titles of the books, and one immediately caught her interest:
The new Royal Family of the North
The story started with Queen Kyaâs, back then Princess, love marriage to Prince Hakoda from the Southern Water Tribe. So, Sokka was part from the south? She never heard of that. It described their reign, and marriage, marking important days such as Sokkaâs birth. The description of her parents-in-law impressed her. A couple loved and respected by everybody.
Several fights were described too. One of them in particular made her excited:
Chapter 21: Prince Sokkaâs biggest fight
It happened three years ago in Whaletail Island.
Our beloved Princess Katara was sailing to Whaletail Island on her own ship, with her crew. The islandâs safety back then was chaotic. The death of Prince Lu Ten of the Fire Nation was blamed on the Royal Family. Prince Iroh, Prince Lu Tenâs father sent an unofficial group of fighters, who upon arriving targeted Princess Katara.
Thankfully, our Prince Sokka left everything behind and rushed to Whaletail Island to bring his sister to safety. Side by side, Prince Sokka and Princess Katara fought to protect each other, their crew, and their island. Upon Prince Sokkaâs orders, Princess Katara was brought to safety, and he took to fighting by himself earning a deep and life threating scar.
After that day, Prince Sokka worked on a safety system that nobody ever could break.
Azula needed several minutes to take the information in. She already sensed Sokkaâs protecting nature, but reading how he would have gone to the ends of world to save his sister gave her goosebumps.
On the other hand, she was taken aback by the fact that her uncle had sent a group of people that werenât officially ranked military soldiers. And the fact that the Northern Water Tribe found that out so quickly? Day by day she was convinced that the Northerners were indeed very intelligent and patient people.
But she never heard of Irohâs attack. Neither her father nor Zhao ever mentioned that. Not even Zuko. The fact that Iroh sent a group of fighters who attacked Princess Katara sat ill with her. Back then she might not have cared. But now, the royal family as well as the people here have faces and names.
Would her father go as far as attacking a young princess for revenge too? She didnât think so. But sadly, she couldnât even be completely sure. She wished she could talk with her brother. In fact, she maybe should write to him. But she didnât feel comfortable about the fact that Sokka or someone he tasks with would read her letters for any forbidden information.
Azula was no fool. She knew her familyâs flaws and wrongdoings. Yet she had a connection with them. Feelings for them.
She tried to calm down. Rain started pouring again, accompanied by thunder and lightning. Storm followed not long afterward. She liked watching the rain. And it calmed her after a while.
It was already evening and Sokka still hadnât arrived. She wondered what he was doing all day long. Would the storm allow him the come home safely? Just as she was wondering why she worried, she saw him entering the house, soaked wet with rain.
She jumped up and took the book on the shelf. Her heart on her sleeve, she waited.
After a while, he walked in, dry and with new clothes.
âWe canât leave the house until tomorrow. Not even to the garden. The storm is heavy, but nothing compared to what will come in a week or two.â he explained.
âDoes the storm cause a lot of trouble?â Azula asked.
âNot so much on the island. But trees can occasionally fall.â Sokka answered.
Yori entered the room. âYour Highness, Her Highness wanted have toast for dinner.â
Sokka looked at his wife and smiled.
âThatâs fine by me.â he said.
Sokka took a seat on the coach across from Azula, enticed by her perfumes he got used to. Her slender pale arms and neck were on display.
He didnât know if he was imagining, but she looked at him differently today. Before he could ask anything, Yori came in with their dinner, and they enjoyed it in silence. Occasional glances were exchanged but nobody mentioned last night.
A heavy thunder startled Azula. Not out of fear though.
âThis house was built resistant to storms. We are safe here.â Sokka said.
âI like the rain and the storm. It feels, relieving to me.â Azula said.
âFor me too.â Sokka said, âItâs also a natural protection for our Island. No outsiders would risk sailing in this weather.â
Azula thought of the book she read earlier. She looked at him with interest and thoughtfulness.
âDo you like reigning Kyoshi Island?â she asked.
Sokka was surprised. Was this the first conversation they were having, without any mocking or arguing?
âBack then I would have gladly give the Crown title to my sister. But as long as she doesnât want it, the law states the eldest to take the throne.â
Itâs hard, but I got used to it. Iâve always tried to work for the safety of our people and justice and will happily keep doing so. But even if I feel honored, the burden of ruling is hard. So, sorry to disappoint but your husband will get white hair pretty early.â he smirked.
Azula actually smiled genuinely, which made Sokka gaze at her in amazement. Every time he looked at her he was amazed, but right now he was truly mesmerized. The glow in her eyes reached another level when she smiled.
âYouâre a ruler too technically.â Sokka said.
âAm I?â she asked playfully.
âYes you are! We still need to make a tour through the island together and meet the people.â
âMeeting people? Not a hobby of mine actually.â
âBut your, what was it you were saying, âduty as Crown Princess and Wifeâ remember?â he said, winking.
He teased her with her own wording from days ago. She shouldnât be surprised that he wouldnât forget what she had said.
âWell, I was born into a royal family too. But unlike you we keep the interaction with our citizen at a minimum.â Azula explained, âWe barely even talk within the family.â
âNot even your mother?â Sokka asked thoughtfully.
Azulaâs bright mood fell, and he instantly regretted asking about the Fire Lady. They barely knew anything about her, but Azulaâs expression suggested nothing good was going on with her mother.
âI guess she didnât interact with others either. She did with Zuko mostly. But I canât remember her relations outside the palace walls.â Azula explained.
Sokka looked confused. There she said it. He was already not fond of her family, so she didn't see a reason to hide how problematic it really was.
âShe had to leave us years ago.â
Fire Nation Royals were discussed often in meetings. The Northern Water Tribe knew that they seemed to have complicated situations. But hearing Azula saying her mother was gone for so long. It made him feel bad.
âIâm sorry about that.â he said. âIf, if there is anything I can do, I would try.â
Today, Azula couldn't help but marvel at him. She tried to hide the surprise on her face immediately. It wasnât like her to wear her emotions blatantly on her face. She needed to get a grip over herself.
âThere is nothing you can do but thank you.â she said.
âI understand.â Sokka said, âHow about the rest of your family?â
âWith Zuko we used to write often, since I could only see him once a month, due to him being at sea for years. But after he came back, he was tasked with looking over the cities on the outskirts of Caldera City. I couldnât see him before I came here though.â Azula explained.
Sokka didnât tear his eyes away from her, not even for a second, intently listening.
âMy father taught me fighting. We trained a lot together for a time. Sometimes Admiral Zhao was there too.â Azula smirked suddenly, âSo, be aware. Your wife can kick your ass.â
Sokka laughed at that. This woman was growing more and more amazing and beautiful in his eyes. Yet, the mood changed again when Azulaâs smile disappeared.
âItâs my uncle who wants you all destroyed, as you might already suspect. My father is interested in trade. But even if we donât like it, Iroh is still technically a Prince that should have become Fire Lord. I donât exactly know what happens behind closed doors, but he has a say upon matters unfortunately.â Azula explained.
âI am open for trading, to exchange resources and built a partnership. But it has to be based on voluntariness and peace, not on fear and oppression. I donât want my nation to fear other nations, especially Yourâs. IâŚâ he stopped for a second, âI want to trust you Azula. For you to trust me too. For us to work together for a peaceful future, to reign Kyoshi Island, our Island together.â
âSokka IâŚ, I donât know yet. Iâm not sure such a thing is even possible.â
âBut it can be.â he said, âWe just have to want it.â
The expression on his face, the words sounding distressed touched a place within her. She wasnât sure about much at the moment, so she gave simple answers.
âMaybe.â
Sokkaâs features softened. He could live with âMaybe.â She didnât push him away this time. And he felt lighthearted about it. And not only because of her answer but because he realized something just now. And he smiled full of wonderment at it.
âDid you just say my name?â he asked.
âWhat?â Azula asked back confused.
âThatâs the first time Iâve heard you say my name.â
âIâŚâ she rolled her eyes at him to keep from blushing.
Sokka laughed loudly at her reaction. Today, because this evening, had been best day in weeks. He wasnât sure what was happening, but he was very happy about it. He saw so many expressions on her face since she arrived on this island. So many emotions, it was fascinating. She was amazing. His wife.
âAre we good?â he asked.
âHave we been bad?â she asked back, teasingly.
Suddenly Azula shivered and Sokka realized how cold the room was becoming.
âIâll light up the fireplace. Itâll warm up the whole house.â Sokka said.
Sokka walked to the fireplace. Azula watched him suddenly wondering about where the scar he received in the fight was. Was she feeling this way because she was tired?
âThey seem to have forgotten to fill in the logs. Iâll fetch some from downstairs, will be back in a minute.â he said.
âOkay.â Azula said lazily.
Before he left, he took a blanket and covered her shoulders. He was a Crown Prince. He could easily ask someone else to fill in the logs right now. Instead, he did it. What was he doing to her todayâŚ
When Sokka came back, Azula was half asleep on the coach. He filled in the logs and walked to her. Something warmed his chest at the sight of her. Dark lashes and eyebrows, smooth chin, every detail on her face was breathtaking for him.
In this position, she would wake up with pain in her neck. He should pick her up and carry her to her bed. Would she be okay with that? He slowly leaned in and put one arm around her waist, the other under her knees. Azula stirred and Sokka didnât move further, looking at her half open eyes.
âIt looked uncomfortable on the couch.â he whispered.
Azula wrapped her arms around his neck and rested her head on his shoulder. Her reaction encouraged him. The need to protect her grew immense now. Slowly, he walked to her room and gently lay her on the bed. He pulled the duvet over her, making sure she was covered.
âGood night.â he said.
But before he could turn around, although he didnât want to, she pulled one arm from under the duvet and reached for his hand. A shiver ran down his spine.
âStay.â she said softly and pulled gently on his hand. He looked expectant yet unsure.
âStay.â she whispered again.
So, he did.
He was lying on his side, facing her, and pulling the duvet over them. Mostly on her since she was freezing. Azula snuggled up to him and closed her eyes. Sokka put an arm around her waist, unable to close his eyes first. Her bare arm touched his.
With rain pouring outside, they spend their first sleep together. And it was wonderful.

Chapter 3: First Confrontation
I thought long about how to split chapters 3-4. As a result, this has become the shortest chapter, but it is the best solution. The next one is going to be be more in-depth, and the one after that action-packed. You could say, the "real story" is about to start next week. =)) Hope you enjoy this chapter.

Sokka followed Azula the whole way to their house. The guard on the front door gave him a short report, so he entered the house after she already got in.
âWhere is she? Where is Azula?â he yelled around.
âShe went into her room.â Yori replied.
Before Sokka could knock, the door to Azulaâs room opened. There she stood, wearing nothing but a robe. He was taken aback by the sight.
âExcuse me, I would like to take a bath, Your Highness.â Azula said, clearly teasing him with the title.
She walked past him holding eye contact and when she reached the bathroom next door, she loosened the sash around her robe. Sokka couldnât see anything with her back turned to him. But the thought of how she looked from the other side... She only turned her head to catch a quick glance and closed the door, leaving him on the hallway, still looking at the door.
Ty Lee was sitting on the couch in Azulaâs room when she finished taking her bath. She took longer time than needed, just to annoy Sokka. Right as she got out of the bathroom, he was already walking towards it, looking at her angrily. She ignored the glare. Yet she couldnât ignore the fact that he had only a towel around his hips. Sadly, she only had seconds to watch before he was gone. Yet it still made her blush. Tan muscled skin everywhere.
âWhat happened? Was he too mad?â Ty Lee asked.
âKind of, yes. He isnât stupid and most likely knew what I was up to.â Azula explained quickly.
âAzula, I know you want to give reports to your father about a safe way into the heart of the tribe, but canât you just let go?â
âLet go? Why are we here for Ty Lee?â
âCanât we start a new life?â
âListen, I need to find a way in and inform my father. What he does with it is his choice.â
âWhat if your weird uncle chooses to attack? Which is what he wants right?â Ty Lee asked, worried.
âMy father wonât let him. He just needs to have information for future deals.â Azula replied.
âI like the people here more.â
âWeâve been here for two days.â Azula furrowed her eyebrows.
âYes, but you know what I mean.â
Azula only rolled her eyes at her friend.
âI will take training.â Ty Lee said, changing the subject. Knowing pressuring Azula wouldnât help now.
âWhat?â Azula asked.
âI always wanted to learn new fighting techniques, and they allowed me into training. This way I can warm the class up towards our people.â she said cheerfully, âGive your life here a chance Azula. And remember, it is your uncle who wants revenge, whereas your father and Zhao are open for negotiations.â
Azula knew that. Her uncle pressured her father into things he didnât always agree with. But because he had the throne despite being the younger one, he never wanted to risk things.
The next day, Azula noticed more guards around the house. Sokka hadnât been in around in the morning, so she ate breakfast with Ty Lee before she took off for training, guided by a guard.
Azula decided to stay in the house. She walked around the gardens and watched the pond. When it was dark enough, she asked a guard to bring her to Ty Lee. Only one guard accompanied her, and she excused herself for a bathroom break.
While she walked to the harbour like she did yesterday, she noticed the lack of control of the guard. As if he knew she planned to âescapeâ and let her go on purpose.
Like yesterday, she stood amid bushes, the darkness giving her better cover.
âItâs the port on the right side.â
Azula abruptly turned around. Sokka was sitting on a rock, arms crossed in front of his chest.
âBut as clever as you may be, you would never make it. Our security is almost impenetrable, as your father and uncle may have noticed.â He smirked but didnât look amused at all.
How long has he been sitting there?
Azula was no fool. And she knew Sokka wasnât one either. But playing one was still the best idea now.
âWhat about the port?â she asked him.
âThe port where my ships from the Northern Water Tribe come and go.â
Sokka stood up and walked up to her, hands on either side of his body. Weapons around his belt and back. Azula stood firmly, not backing away.
âThe one you plan to report your father to. Or take a ship yourself with your grandiose plan you cement on my courtesy to you.â Sokka said. This time without a smirk.
âWatch your mouth!â Azula didnât mean to yell, but he was being rude. It was true, but rude still.
Sokka seemed to be taken aback slightly by her yelling. But he didnât stop. It felt like he finally found the right key to the right door.
âIsnât that the truth Azula?â
âI became Crown Princess to the Northern Water Tribe, to which this Island belongs to. I can go wherever I wish to go!â
âYouâŚâ Sokka started, but Azula interrupted.
âYou killed my cousin when he came for trade, just because he sailed on your waters! Would you kill the me too?!â she said harshly.
Sokka became angrier at her words. He also felt a part of him feeling disappointed that she would think so badly of him, but why was he wondering at allâŚ
âDo you truly believe that?â he asked with a frown.
âYes.â she replied. But she was not convinced.
âSeems like you were fed with huge lies.â he said.
âI was notâŚ.â
âMy uncle Bato was in control of the fleet back then. Prince Lu Ten entered our waters without our allowance. We never ever harm people if they do not harm us! And even then, we give our best to find the best solution possible. Lu Ten was warned several fucking times to stop the ship from sailing on our waters! We prepared to throw a small fire on the hull to disable the ship from sailing further. A method we invented to keep away from harming the people on it, to give them one more chance. But your cousins ship hit rock by itself and exploded!â
âYour father and uncle knew exactly that we need to protect our lands. It is no different than the way the Fire Nation defends itself. Nobody can wander around in a place not belonging them. Our Tribe faced invaders in the past. Your grandfather one of them.â
âAnd besides, before coming with these accusations, ask yourself: Why was Lu Ten sent to a dangerous mission? Why was your brother Zuko tasked with sailing around the world? Why did they send away their only Princess? I will tell you why: because your family is using their heirs for their own ends!â
Azula slapped him.
Turned around and walked away. Angry and heartbroken. She hurried to the house, needing to be alone. It became difficult to keep her tears in. The rain fell harder. Right as she entered her new home.
She cried and cried.
For Sokkaâs words held a truth.
For she deep down always knew it.
Knew in what an environment she grew up. But now it felt like she had evidence.
She kept crying because her mother didnât love her.
Cried because she couldnât say goodbye to her brother.
Cried because her father agreed to a task that seemed impossible to fulfil. And not even a thing she wanted.
Cried more, because she felt alone in this world. Alone and heartbroken.
Years ago, she wouldâve passionately wanted to give in the wishes of others, so that they would be pleased. When in fact, said people like her father shouldâve loved her without conditionsâŚ
âŚ........................................................................................
Sokka stood at the shore. Eyes closed, his clothes and hair wet, he took in the storm. Hoped it would take away his frustration.
Maybe he has been too harsh. Azula didnât deserve to be treated that way from her family. Nor was she responsible for their sins. But he had to make sure. Even if it had been too harsh. He needed her to see the truth. To show her that he would protect his homeland and family.
âYour Highness, youâre going to catch a cold.â a royal guard said.
âŚ........................................................................................
After calming down at the harbor, Sokka walked up to the house. He got rid of his wet clothes and took a shower. It was late at night, but he needed to speak to Azula. So, he found himself looking at her door.
âAzula.â Sokka whispered, knocking on her door.
She walked away angry, he had to check if she was okay. When no answer came, he dared to open her door. He shouldâve guessed. Azula was asleep. Slowly, he walked to her bed. One bare shoulder showed out of the duvet, her robe slid down. Sokka sighed and pulled the duvet over her shoulder, quietly covering her..
Azula opened her eyes after she heard Sokka closing the door behind him. A knot formed in her throat.
When was the last time someone covered her from the cold? She didnât even rememberâŚ
