Be ready to find the Bali sky full of massive kite!
More than just paper and string. In Bali, kite flying is a sacred dialogue with the heavens. The Festival Layang-Layang is a thanksgiving ritual to Hindu deities, asking for a bountiful harvest. Every giant Bebean (fish), Janggan (bird), and Pecukan (leaf) carries the spirit of community, crafted by entire villages working as one.

Pengerebongan - Also known as Ngerebong is a sacred ceremony that takes place in Bali 8 days after each hari raya Kuningan. This holy ceremony took place for the first time in 1937 and until now Kesiman is the only village in Bali that celebrates this tradition. The day is believed to be a gathering of the gods to promote balance between all things. Many Balinese from outside this village come to watch the ceremony and see the giant penjors that are bigger than the usual ones seen during the Galungan holidays. Many people experience ‘kerauhan’, a trance-like state, as their body is possessed by spirits unknown and when this happens many will call to hold the Keris, a Balinese dagger and will try to stab themselves with it, usually in the chest, legs, or even in the eyes. Surprisingly, no one is ever hurt/damaged by this act, because it’s believed their body is protected by the legendary Barong, the king of spirits and leader of all things good.

Lembu: The Majestic Bull Sarcophagus in Balinese Cremation CeremoniesBalinese cremation ceremonies are awe-inspiring rituals that hold great significance for the journey of the soul. Death rites, including the cremation ceremony known as ngaben for lower caste or pelebon for higher caste, mark crucial milestones in the soul's transition into the 'after life'.A key component of Balinese cremations is the sarcophagus. Unlike the ancient Egyptian sarcophagi designed for preservation, Balinese sarcophagi are temporary structures that accompany the body during the cremation process. The most commonly seen sarcophagus shape is that of the lembu, meaning bull or cow. Representing Siwa, the deity associated with death and spiritual recycling. Other animal-shaped sarcophagi, such as the deer or lion, are also used, but it is essential that it must be a four-legged animal to represent the ‘kanda empat’ symbolising the "four siblings" that we are born into this world with. These giant effigies are normally made from wood and can be quite large, measuring around 2.5 meters in length and 1.5 meters in width. Adorned with mirrors and gold fabric, the bull is placed on a bamboo or wooden platform to be carried by a group upon their shoulders.During the cremation, the body is carried separately in a bade tower. A family member may ride atop the bull as it is carried to the cremation grounds. At the designated location near the Pura Dalem temple (Death temple), the body is transferred from the bade into the sarcophagus. Then, both the sarcophagus and body are burned together, releasing the soul from its worldly vessel.
