A peek into the brotherâs best friend!jack abbot x robinavitch!reader fic ive been working on <3
You were going to kill him.
He had told you to come to his house so you could drive to the beach together, yet here he was standing in front of a very familiar truck, with your suitcases in hand. Just. Yours. He had a shit-eating grin plastered across his face that you were so close to slapping off.
âWhere's your stuff, Robby?â
âSo, about that.â He says while turning around and putting your suitcases in the bed of the truck. âNo. No, Robby, I'm not fucking doing this with you right now.â You can't help but pace back and forth, arms crossed. âListen, I need to stay an extra day. I thought I was in the clear, but I was wrong-â
âWhat the fuck, Robby! Why are you just now telling me this? You're dumber than I thought you were if you think I'm going now.â You get closer, trying to grab your bags, but he doesn't let you. âJesus, you're such a brat.â
Groaning at his statement, you back up and shake your head as he continues, âI paid for the goddamn Airbnb, just go! You can ignore him the entire time for all I care. Or you can finally figure out what the hell is wrong with the both of you and make up. I mean, Jesus, he's my best friend! I just want the two of you to get along.â

a/n: honestly i started writing this right after posting too. I tried getting this out sooner but was super busy last night so this morninn will have to do. I really appreciate all your support and hope you enjoy the story and its ending!1! :D
Slowly fluttering your eyes open, youâre met by the brightest light known to man, and pain all over your body. Trying to move your arms shoots a sharp, searing pain up your body, that has you whimpering and tensing up, your jaw clenched so tight you think you might crack your teeth.
You blink rapidly, attempting to get your eyes to focus. You look around and notice the empty hospital room engulfing you.
âF-Fuck.â Your breath hitching as you look down at yourself, tearing up at the sight. You were covered in bruises and scratches, your leg wrapped tightly with some dressing, and your right arm in a sling. You move your less affected arm towards your face and head, wincing at the soreness and pain.
Thereâs a lingering pain somewhere deep in you though, one that hurts worse than any physical injury you have. Reaching for your chest now, your hand bunching up the hospital gown right above your heart.
God, the world is cruel. You lie here broken in more ways than one, and the man who had sworn âtill death do us partâ is freely walking after breaking every promise.
It truly had come out of nowhere. He was so loving, practically kissing the ground you walked on. The love you shared felt like a fairy tale, everything was perfect, even your arguments.
But you just werenât her.
And that was forever going to haunt you. I mean, fuck, you see it, you understand it. Sheâs amazing. What sheâs achieved in life and how she carries herself, she was always someone you looked up to. Her betrayal hurts just as much as his.
The door creaking open rips you from your thoughts, seeing the nurse peek through. âOh, perfect, youâre up, Mrs.Abbot.â You flinch at the name, wincing slightly. She notices and quickly rushes over to examine you, concern etched across her face. She asks how your feeling, and you give her the rundown on how youâre physically feeling.
âIs everybody in the ambulance okay?â Suddenly remembering that other people were involved âEveryone else got away scot-free. You, on the other hand, had no seatbelt on.â She starts typing on her laptop. âHonestly, itâs a miracle you got away with a broken bone, some other minor injuries, and nothing else. You went through your windshield, but youâre lucky your husband was there, he brought you in and was the one who worked on you.â You scoff. Thatâs definitely not the word to describe it. âluckyâ
Unable to contain your disdain, you spit out âex-husband,â and she gives you a knowing, sad smile. News must travel fast in here, which makes something bubble up in your stomach. You canât stand another second in this hospital right now.
âI need some air, please.â You plead, and she starts shaking her head. âYou wonât be able to walk, but even if you could, it isnât a good idea. Sweetheart you need to rest.â You sit up, hiding the abrupt pain in your chest when you do.
âI just need some air. Let me try and get up, and if Iâm not able to walk, Iâll lie back down.â Youâre begging, âI promise,â and she lets out a sigh, giving in. You know she pities you, but you couldnât care less at this point.
She helps you get up, and you bite down, doing your best not to reveal the severe pain. Every step was like a knife stabbing you, over and over again. It was awful.
As you get to the elevator, it dings and opens to reveal the person you were trying to escape. Tears flood your vision as Jack rushes to you. âBaby, oh my god.â his voice cracked.
He was at your side, gently pulling you in for a hug, avoiding the IV. The touch making you whimper, your pain now unbearable. Maybe it was the drugs, but you melted into his touch, your body betraying you.
âThank you so much, Iâll take it from here.â You could feel him shaking. He was crying, your tears mixing as he rested his forehead on yours. You let out a shaky breath, unable to move, unable to beg the nurse to stay as she walked away. He was like a fucking vampire, draining the life and energy out of you.
You remained in his chest, breathing him in, trying to remember the scent he left in your bed, but all you could smell was Samira.
The smell bringing you back to reality, making you retreat from him slowly, your eyes away from him. âTake me home, Jack.â you spit out.
You wanted to leave, but you physically couldnât. Jack had taken two weeks off to nurse you back to health. It was miserable, you were stuck. You had no family here, nowhere to crash, and your fucking car was gone.
Those two weeks did something to you. You barely spoke to Jack, but he was always there, and you hated it. He was constantly pleading with you, trying to explain why he did what he did. Constantly whispering sweet nothings and how much he loved you, but you didnât budge.
Although your body was constantly betraying you. The first few nights, you had forced him into the guest room, but on a day that you were extra vulnerable, he had managed to sneak himself in, and you relished in his warmth, allowing him to sleep in your bed from then on out.
Then the showers, god they were the worst. You didnât want him to see you naked, but he had to help, and when he did, youâd lean into his touch, borderline moaning at it. There was a huge part of you that missed him, and your life before you found out. So you couldn't help it.
And that was exactly why you were packing your bags the night he went back to work. You couldnât give in, so you had to leave.
While he was taking care of you, you had been messaging your mother and sister, and they had begged you to come back. Knowing it was what was best for you, you decided you would. Leaving your wedding ring on your bed, waiting for him.
There was no excuse for what he did. You two had an amazing life, it was practically perfect. Yet he still slept with another womanâ your closest friend. He thinks maybe it was the thrill, maybe it was the excitement of getting caught, but that made him recoil at himself. He was a weak man.
âI donât think sheâs ever gonna forgive me.â Jack sighs into the phone, sitting at the longest red light known to man. âJack, I donât know any woman who would.â He knows Robbyâs right, but I mean, what was he supposed to do? Let you go without fighting?
After a long moment of silence, Jack speaks again, âAlright man, Iâm almost home. Iâll see you later tonight.â As he turns into his driveway, something twists in his stomach. The guilt was eating away at him and taking a toll on him mentally, and physically, but what you were going through was so much worse, he had to stay strong.
Walking into the house, he immediately started heading towards the bedroom, needing to see your face, craving you. Only to be met with an empty, neat room.
He spots the glint of the ring on your shared bed and immediately runs over, almost tripping over himself. Picking it up he feels his tears finally begin to fall.
He drops to his knees, his hand holding the ring over his heart. It was a miracle he had met you all those years ago. He didnât think he would find love again after his wife, but you proved him wrong. You were perfect, and he fell for you instantly, but now none of that mattered.
You were gone.

a/n:first of all FUCK AI, but yall idk what came over me, bby i was feeling emotional last night and was feeling lana so i decided to write this based off her song âThe other womanâ. I had just published my first fic and immediately started on this. IDK i love my angst but was this too much? lmk how yall feel about it tho hope you enjoy :D
You knew everyone that Jack was close with at the hospital, inviting them over for holidays, parties, and any special occasions. You took care of them because it was the least you could do, especially when they were out saving lives while you stayed at home waiting for your husband to come back.
You didn't think your life would end up this way, not that you hated it, it was amazing compared to how you lived before. You were pampered, and Jack made sure of it, but it did eat away at you a little bit when you saw the women he worked with.
They were all absolute powerhouses, and you looked up to them. It's not that you wanted to become a doctor or a nurse, but it's the independence and power you craved. You wanted to be able to walk into a room and command, but you were here instead, lounging on a pool chair, relaxing while your husband worked a double, saving lives.
These thoughts would run through your head a lot, making you question yourself, but today was the day you wanted to do something about it. So you got up, changed out of your bikini, and started preparing a meal to feed most of the PTMC workers. You had done it plenty of times before for the parties you and Jack threw, so this was honestly no trouble for you. You wanted to help and do something good.
That's how you got here, standing in the break room with your heart broken in two. You had walked in from the waiting room and immediately got bombarded by Dana and Dr.Langdon, they were calling you their lifeline and reaching for the heavy bags you carried, leaving you with empty hands, and letting you lead the way to the break room.
You'd been in the hospital once before when Jack had forgotten his lunch, so you knew where to go. You were the first one there, barging in so you could hold the door for them.
What you didn't expect was being met with the sight of Samira Mohan on the lap of your husband, lips connected, with his hand down her hospital scrubs, and the other in her hair.
As soon as you open the door, they're scurrying, trying to act normal, not realizing who it was that walked in. You hear Dana gasp and a barely audible âJesusâ behind you.
You stand there frozen, tears welling up until you see Jack turn to look at you. A look of surprise on his face quickly turns into guilt and pain. Heâs immediately moving towards you, reaching for you, but you stumble back into Dana.
Instead of looking at him, you look at the disheveled woman behind him, heavily breathing with both hands on her mouth, and redness climbing her neck.
You'd invited her into your home, took care of her when her mother was too overbearing, and shared everything you could without a second thought. She was your closest friend since you moved to Pittsburgh to be with Jack.
Everybody in your vicinity was now frozen, waiting for your next move, you cant help but roll your eyes. âHow long have you been fucking him?â you manage to spit out, your voice cracking. You see her look over at Jack with pleading eyes, but he does nothing but stand there in shame, now looking down at his shoes. Asshole canât even look at me.
âHow long have you been fucking him!?â you scream, not caring if the entire hospital hears, and that makes them both flinch in return. She finally gathers the courage to speak and opens her mouth to speak. âSince the Pitt Fest shootingâŚâ she squeaks out quietly, and you finally let your tears fall, loud sobs coming out of your mouth as you turn to leave.
Pushing past Langdon and Dana, you ignore their calls as you notice all the eyes on you. Not being able to take it, you sprint out, your thoughts moving at 100mph.
Pitt fest? He came home to you that night, sobbing in your chest as you comforted him. Rocking him back and forth on the floor by the front door, whispering reassurances and your love for him in his ear. Now you know why he was crying, and fuck does it have you bending over a bush by the parking lot, your lunch from earlier coming back up.
You feel a hand rubbing your back, and it sends chills up your back when you recognize whose hand it is. âGet away from me, Jack.â Your voice is unrecognizable.
You wipe your face and turn to look at him. âBaby, Iâm so sorry, I promise it meant nothing. S-She was just there after Pitt Fest and-â You slap him, cutting him off. âAnd I wasn't? God, you're so pathetic, Jack. I wonder, how many times dâyou fuck her when she was over? Iâd wake up to an empty bed sometimes but never thought anything of it, but now, now I understand.â
You start walking away not wanting to hear anything else from him, when he stops you by grabbing onto your thighs, and dropping to his knees. âPlease, I'm begging you, you're it for me, sweetheart.â You scoff, what a piece of shit.
You feel your insecurities eat at you. âIs it because I'm at home all day? Am I not smart enough for you? Or am I not pretty enough? Why wasnât i enough, Jack.â Your tears are now falling again, hiccuping while you speak, and you watch his heart shatter. It's a little too late for that.
You don't know why you were asking, because you wouldn't believe a single thing he said, so as he's blabbering about how wrong you are, and how much he loves you, you pry him off and get into your car, locking all the doors instantly.
Jack starts banging on your window as you turn your engine on. You roll your window down, and the begging continues. You yell his name to shut him up, looking directly into his eyes. âI hate you, Jack, I never want to see you again.â
You pull out of the parking lot so fast that you don't notice the ambulance coming in with the sirens on at full speed. The last thing you hear before everything goes black is Jack crying out your name, and you almost laugh at the irony of the situation.

This was a horrible ideaâŚ
You don't know why you agreed, maybe it was because Trinity practically begged you on her knees after her performance with Mel, maybe it was because you had one too many drinks, or maybe it was because a certain silver-haired man was eating away at you.
It was definitely all of the above.
While giggling and stumbling over to the stage, you knew exactly what song you'd be choosing. The song that you'd listened to on your car ride home after being rejected so brutally, you took the next few shifts off at PTMC, even though he worked the night and you the day.
It was his night off, so he had asked you to stay over, wanting to enjoy the rare occasion of you in his bed, and you'd be a fool to say no. So there you were in his arms moaning his name, and he was there moaning yours.
âJack, I'm so close, fuck-â You were holding onto his shoulders, not able to let go, head thrown back at the white-hot pressure building up in your lower stomach. His calloused hands were holding onto your hips, slightly lifting you while you were in his lap, fucking into you at an incredible speed, hitting that sweet spot over and over again. His face in your neck, giving you breathy moans that were made just for you. âThat's it. baby let go, come for me.â You pulled your head away, looking at him, and god he was practically on the verge of tears, begging you.
Hearing and seeing him brought you over the edge, your legs shaking uncontrollably, screaming his name. The feeling of you squeezing him this tight made him spill deep inside you on the spot. He was holding onto you so tight, not wanting to leave any space between you, and groaning your name so loudly you're sure his neighbors would hear him.
So when the words âI love youâ slipped after coming down from the amazing orgasm you received from the man under you, the last thing you expected was for him to tense up under you. Yeah, maybe those words slipping out surprised you too, but his reaction had caught you off guard even more.
He quickly got up from under you, not giving you any time to say anything, and hurried to the restroom while you just sat there, jaw slightly agape, rushing to gather his sheets and covering yourself, now feeling too exposed, too bare.
You knew he wasn't ready for it, you knew he hadn't reciprocated it. He already had the love of his life, and still has her with him every day. You heard all the stories about how amazing she was and how no one else could compare. It's horrible to say, but you were envious, you couldn't help it, she was perfect.
But when you said those three words, it felt so right because you did love him with all your heart. You had loved him since before the day your friendship had turned into something more, before the day he touched you in all the right places. You didn't mean to say it, it slipped, but it was bound to happen. Your heart would reveal itself eventually.
Once he came out, he had a confused, conflicted look on his face. With a towel in his hand, he walked over and started cleaning you up carefully, like you were as fragile as a porcelain doll, and heâd break you if he wiped a little too hard. He was doing everything right, but the energy didn't feel right. He wasn't looking at you, and you hated yourself for it. You needed to fix it.
Once he finished, you finally dared to speak up. âJack, I-â He interrupted immediately, putting his hand up. He wouldn't even hear you out. âYou need to leaveâŚâ He still wasn't looking at you, and his voice was as soft as can be. You feel your heart drop into the deepest pit of your stomach, and you feel humiliated. âWhat?â Your voice is small and cracking, you can feel the tears welling up.
He backs up, the moonlight that was pouring in from his window, hitting his naked frame. âWe can't do this anymore, sweetheart,â he says while looking down at his feet. The pet name sounding foreign in his mouth now. Anger was starting to seep into you. He was your best friend, how could he?! Even if he hadn't felt the same, he was going to kick you out like you meant nothing to him?
You scoff as you get up, letting the blanket fall to the ground. The movement making him look up at you, finally taking in every detail. He looked like he was drinking in the view of you, trying to remember everything he could, in a way that felt loving, but maybe that was you trying to convince yourself that he felt something more.
God, you were stupid. Here he was, shattering your heart into tiny little pieces, and yet you were ready to jump into his arms, to kiss every part of him, to tell him that you loved him over and over again, and that you'd always be there for him.
What is wrong with you?
Instead, you opened your mouth, but nothing came out, so you looked away and started getting dressed, walking away without looking back. The worst thing about it was that he went back into the bathroom as soon as you moved to get dressed, the fucker didn't even care enough to watch you go.
Practically limping out of his house with your heels in one hand and your car keys in the other, you finally let your quiet tears fall. This is what the walk of shame felt like. Once you were in your car, isolated from the rest of the world, you let the uncontrollable sobs out, letting your head rest on the steering wheel.
After a couple of minutes of self-despair and pity, you finally calm down enough and turn your engine on, the radio coming to life, blasting a song that would soon have your tears resurfacing.
âYou and meâ
âWe used to be togetherâ
âEvery day together, alwaysâ
âI really feelâ
âThat I'm losing my best friendâ
âI can't believe this could be the endâ
You start driving away, turning up the volume until you felt like you were going deaf, still not looking back, afraid you'd go back begging the minute you did. You couldn't humiliate yourself further, so instead you had one hand on the wheel and the other on your phone texting your attending, who was likely asleep âHey Robby, I know it's really late, but I've come down with something and need to take tomorrow off.â
It had been a grueling month since then, and Trinity had convinced half of the PTMC to come out to the bar after a rough Fourth of July shift, which Jack Abbot just happened to be a part of. You had managed to dodge and avoid him since that day. It was the longest you'd ever gone without seeing each other, and while it nearly killed you, you knew you couldn't handle seeing him, couldn't handle seeing him happy and thriving while you were the complete opposite.
But that's exactly what happened on that shift, walking past a room and seeing him shirtless with Samira by his side saying, âOur little secret.â You almost stopped dead in your tracks. It had been a month since you saw him, and here he was, looking hotter than ever with another woman, another woman you couldn't compare to. You had been stupid to think you were special. So you forced your feet to keep moving and gave him the cold shoulder any time he was near you the rest of your shift.
Now, here you were on the stage, you heard the cheer of your extremely supportive colleagues, but you also felt the intense burn of someone's eyes on the back of your head while scrolling through the tablet, looking for that specific song. âDon't speakâ by No doubt
âAh, here it is,â you sighed out, feeling something twist in your chest. Maybe this wasn't the best idea, if anything, this would hurt you more, but you really wanted him to know, you wanted him to feel the pain, and what better way to show him than through song!
You turn around and immediately catch the eyes of the person burning a hole through your head. He was holding a beer in his hand that had barely been touched. He looked tired, but he still looked gorgeous, and you couldn't help but stare until you remembered how many of your coworkers were watching you ogle your superior.
Letting out a short laugh and looking away, you see Cassie give you a look. She was the one who nursed you back to health after your heartbreak, not knowing exactly who the mystery man was, but now she was slowly piecing it together.
Your eye then catches Robby snickering and elbowing Jack lightly, he was the only one who knew, and god what a jerk he was about it. Jack doesn't react to it though, he just keeps his annoyingly emotionless face on you, awaiting you.
You grab the mic and start quietly, instantly regretting your decision to come up here. You close your eyes, not wanting to embarrass yourself any further.
âYou and meâ
âWe used to be togetherâ
You hear a quick cheer from some of your coworkers, and you reopen your eyes, gaining more confidence than before, it slowly growing as the song progressed, having you peer at Jack every once in a while.
âDon't speakâ
âI know just what you're sayinââ
âSo please stop explainingâ
âDon't tell me âcause it hurtsâ
Near the end of the song, you had completely blocked everybody else out, zoning in on him, not caring what anyone was thinking, because all you could think about was him.
Looking at him was like a time machine back to that night in his room, that confused and conflicted look on his face again, but ten-fold. It wasn't until you felt a salty taste in your mouth that you realized you had started crying.
Once the song had finished, you finally came back to your senses. Looking around the room you see your coworkers' faces, everybody seems to have noticed you singing your heart out to Night shift attending, Jack Abbot.
Instantly sobering up and feeling hot warmth crawl up your neck, you awkwardly laugh and quickly walk off stage. Trinity starts to clap and cheer loudly, too drunk to really understand what the fuck just happened. The rest of your too-drunk coworkers join, I mean, you just gave them a performance of a lifetime. You hear your name being called out, but you ignore it and pass by the busy patrons quickly.
Once outside, you let out a huge sigh, feeling like you can finally breathe, your body also cooling down. That's short-lived though, because as soon as you calm down, something invades your space, immediately bringing your body heat back up.
You knew his warmth too well, it had engulfed you for so long that you knew exactly who it was. âLeave me alone, Jack.â Your shoulders were so tense, tonight was the night to let go and relax, yet here you were unable to do so. âPlease look at me,â he says while resting his hands around your waist, making you melt into his touch.
You can't help but obey, you turn around slowly and look up at him. You're not crying anymore, but your face is wet, so he reaches up, wiping them away, the feeling making your eyes flutter shut. âWhy are you doing this to me?â you groan while his touch was burning you, leaving an invisible mark.
âI miss you so much, baby,â He whispers, resting his forehead on yours, but they have you tearing your eyes open, retreating from his touch, the pet name making you scoff. âHow dare you? You have no right to chase after me and tell me you miss me. God, you're ridiculous and a liar.â You spit out, looking like a madwoman, waving your arms around.
âNo, you don't under-â he tries reaching for you again, but you won't let him, ripping your arm away from him. âI don't understand?â You point at yourself, almost cackling at how ridiculous his statement was.
âI don't understand that you loved your wife? Don't understand how perfect she was, and how your time with the love of your life was cut short? You'll never be able to love again because of her, trust me, I understand! And most of all, I understand that I meant nothing, that our nights together meant nothing to you, and that our friendship was a fallacy. If you truly cared about me, you wouldn't have kicked me out the way you did, you wouldn't have let me leave even if you didn't feel the same way after I said what I said.â Now turning your finger and pointing it at him, jabbing it in his chest. âYou would've sought me out after, Jack,â you say more quietly.
He looks distraught, your words hitting him like bullets. âCome on, there's no need for the bullshit, Jack. I mean, I caught you with Samira earlier, so screw your âI miss youâ because it doesn't mean shit, you're a liar.â He stares at you confused. God, is that the only thing he can express?
He opens his mouth, but before he can speak, you raise your hand, now cutting him off. âI'm leaving.â throwing his words right back at him. You push past him, and he lets you. Walking into the bar, you feel lighter, still heavy, and your heart in pain, but definitely a little bit lighter. So much so that you head straight for the bartender, ordering a round of shots for everyone who was drinking, including Jack.
Heading back to your table, you notice he had rejoined, sitting next to Robby. He looks like a kicked puppy, you ignore him and look back at everyone, "Look what i found" you say excitedly, and that gets loud cheers from everybody. Lord knows you can't afford this, but you don't care, it'll distract them and you from what happened.
Everyone quickly reaches for their shots, besides jack. âDr.Abbot, are you not gonna take your shot with us?â you sweetly say to him, abandoning his first name and going back to formalities, like you weren't moaning it a month ago, you wanted to piss him off.
He looks at you as his jaw ticks, trying to read you, to understand you. âNo baby, I need to be able to drive you home later, don't I?â You freeze for a second, eyes wide, looking over at Cassie, who was supposed to be your DD, but she just shrugs and laughs, watching it all unfold.
He wasn't being subtle about it, laying it on thick. He had spent so much time and effort hiding your situation in the past, it surprises you when he calls you baby, but I mean it was quite obvious that you two had something more going on from the moment you got on that stage, so he abandoned caring.
The table got so quiet you could hear a pin drop even in the loud karaoke bar you were in. Quickly composing yourself, you scoff and reach over to take his shot before your own. Quickly downing it, you immediately pick up your own, forcing a quick toast with everyone else at the table, and downing that one too, and the entire time he was watching you with a not so amused look. Good.
As the night goes on, you keep going back up to buy more shots for yourself, trying to reach a new level of fucked up so you could forget the pain and let go. After your fourth or fifth shot, you walk back with Trinity to an unexpected duo singing.
Samira and Jack.
He was smiling and laughing while she looked beautiful, matching his laugh whenever it was his turn. It hurt. They were singing âEye of the Tiger,â which you couldn't help but let a giggle out at, of course he'd pick that song. Although as soon as your laugh was out, it was gone, and your anger was back. It's almost like he was rubbing it in your face. âWhat an asshole,â you mutter under your breath. âYeah, a miserable asshole.â A deep voice speaks beside you, making you jump.
Looking over, you catch Robby standing close by, smirking, with a fruity cocktail in hand. Rolling your eyes, you look back at the stage. âYou're not much better than him,â you slur, and he laughs at that. âYeah, you're not wrong about that.â
Robby was your attending and his closest friend, so you two had also gotten close. When you took multiple days off, he also came to check on you, coming over on a day that Cassie wasn't there. He told you Jack had been coming in early and leaving late on his shifts, and that he'd see him search for something that never showed up. This man had your address, and he had your number, yet here he was sacrificing sleep to try and catch you at work instead of knocking on your door to apologize. You had told Robby that you didn't want to see him and left it at that.
You assumed he told him because when you came back to work, you didn't see him early or later in your shift. There was a part of you that secretly wished he would be there, but he wasn't, so you did your best to avoid him from then on out, which you were very successful at.
Robby came in closer, and you instinctively grabbed onto his arm, trying to steady yourself because you knew you would fall if you didn't. At least that's what you tell yourself when you see Jack's eyes snap to the movement, it felt good seeing that look in his eye.
You turn back and quirk an eyebrow up at Robby, realizing something. âSince when do youuu drink fruity cocktails?â He takes a sip and makes a sour face, and you laugh. âGod, I don't. Noelle likes them, so I got one with her.â Honestly, you had completely forgotten that Robby had brought her along. Looking over your shoulder, you see her brandishing the same look Jack had, pointing daggers at you two.
Turning back around, giggling, you reach for his drink. He watches you with an amused look on his face as you take a sip, a moan coming out of you at the taste. âYou have no taste, Robby, this is delicious!â You feel the stares getting harsher, so you break away from him. âAlright, I think it's time you go back to your girlfriend before she kills me.â You laugh while retreating, and he gives you a begging look as if to say, âPlease, don't make me.â You mouth âman upâ to him and turn around.
You notice the duet finally coming to an end as you walk away. You roll your eyes as you go towards the table everyone was at. Maybe Jack was right to end it because, god, you were insufferable. You weren't mad at Samira, but you were extremely jealous of her, and you couldn't hide it.
You stop yourself, watching the crew pat Jack on the back, cheering him and Samira on. You then watch him hug her tight, laughing and saying something along the lines of âThat wasn't too bad.â He glances up at you, and it's like something breaks in you again.
Scrap that whole chat you had outside, you don't feel lighter. Its all back and it's heavy, pressing into your chest, making it hard to breathe. Nothing could get you over this man. Why are you like this?  You shake your head, frustrated with yourself.
You start looking around and spot a man that you noticed when you first entered the bar. He had been staring at you and even offered you a drink, which you declined, your eyes searching for someone else at the time. Honestly, he wasn't too bad, he had greys in his hair, and that was close enough to your type.
You try to walk over without stumbling, drink abandoned, and introduce yourself with a hand outstretched. âIt's nice seeing you again, darling. My name's Joel. What can I do for you?â he shakes your hand and lets out a chuckle with an eyebrow raised. You're feeling bold and impatient. âCan I kiss you?â You slur your words, and it's obvious you're beyond intoxicated, but you don't care, you need to do this. Right?
âSomething would be wrong with me if I turned away such a beautiful lady.â He fully turns his body, which was leaning on the bar. Reaching out, he tucks in a strand of hair, and you giggle. If you squint your eyes enough, it's almost like it's Jack leaning in to kiss you. God, you were desperate.
Before anything can happen, Joel gets shoved back hard, so hard he almost falls. âBack the fuck off her, man, canât you see how gone she is?â Jack appears in front of you, shouting loud enough to catch the attention of everyone nearby. âWhat the fuck, Jack!â You yell, pulling his arm back. He stares back at you and scoffs, grabbing onto your arm and dragging you past this old creep, not giving him enough time to react or fight back, not like he would anyway. Everybody was now looking at him like he had taken advantage of you, so he just went back leaning on the bar, embarrassed.
âJack, fucking let go of me!â He isn't hurting you, but his grip is so strong that you see his muscles flex, and you feel an ache in your lower stomach. You still protest the entire way out, but he just ignores you and keeps walking. By the time he finally lets go, you're out by his car. He's unlocking the car door, picking you up, and putting you in the passenger seat effortlessly, and you can't help but let him, that ache and want for him growing.
Closing your door, he walks around and finally enters, sitting next to you, but not moving to turn the car on. You turn with a bewildered look to you, ready to argue, but instead you're met with a water bottle in front of your face. âPlease, drink some water,â he pleads. You groan at the thought of him still caring, so you grab the bottle and chug it. Once you're done, you crush it and throw it at him. You might be obedient, but you're not letting him off that easily.
He scoffs. âYou're childish, you know that?â Holding back the urge to mock him, you bite your tongue, not wanting to prove him right. âThat's funny because you were the one dragging me away from a man just a moment ago! You're the childish one, Jack.â You see him white-knuckling the steering wheel. "He was going to take advantage of you, I wasn't gonna let that happen." You look away, biting your bottom lip. âThis isn't fair, Jack. What am I supposed to do? I don't want to sit and watch you fall for a girl that isn't me.â The confused look reappears on his face, and you want to punch the fuck out of him.
âFuck, all this time I thought it was because of your wife, and how you couldn't move on because she was the love of your life, but now I realize I was the problem. Samiraâs a nice girl, I know she's super sma-â he abruptly cuts you off. âSamira? Baby, she's just a friend, she looks up to me as a mentor.â he reaches out and holds your face with his hand.
âI'm so sorry. I'm so sorry I pushed you away in the worst way possible, I'm sorry I made you cry, I'm sorry I made you feel like you had to kiss someone else when I should be the only one you're kissing. And I'm sorry for making you think you weren't the love of my life.â Your breath catches as he rubs your lower lips with his thumb. Your body relaxes because this was all you ever wanted to hear and more. âI wanted to explain it to you earlier, the guilt I felt that night. How badly I wanted to say it back, but feeling too guilty to let it out, I felt like I was betraying her, but I was betraying a part of myself by holding back. This month has been hell without you. I wanted to reach out, but I didn't think you wanted anything to do with me after that night. I fucked up bad, baby.â Your eyes soften, eyebrows furrowed, and you can't help but lean in, and he follows. âJack.â You whisper.
You feel him wipe under your eyes again. How many times are you gonna cry tonight? âI love you too.â As soon as he says it, you can't help but close the space and kiss him. The kiss is messy, both of you reaching and grabbing what you can. He swipes his tongue against your lower lip, asking for permission, and you let him in.
You quickly climb over the console and sit in his lap, grinding against him, feeling how hard he is. He groans into the kiss, pulling back slightly, taking in how you look. âF-fuck.â His head tilts back as you roll down onto him again.
You try to roll against him again, chasing your own pleasure, but his hands stop you from doing so. He watches you squirm. âI want this, fuck, I really do, but you're too intoxicated right now.â Shaking his head when you whine against his lips, frustrated. âNo.â You try to move again, and his grip gets tighter, you shiver at the thought of his hands leaving bruises, and marking you.
His voice drops as he looks deeply into you, sending chills down your spine. âI'm gonna take you home. I'll feed you and then run a nice bath for you. I'm going to take care of you tonight.â He says it like it's final. You don't want to give in, but he has you in a trance, listening to whatever order he gives you, so you give in, slumping into him and laying your face in the crook of his neck, breathing him in. âFine, but I want to go to your place,â you huff out, and he laughs.
Picking your head back up, you see him looking at you with loving eyes, not wanting to ever look away. âWhere'd you think I meant when I said home?â You laugh back and lean in to softly peck his lips. Once you pull away, he gives you the goofiest smile. "God, I love you." You return his smile and pull him in for a tight hug, never wanting to let him go. "I love you too, Jack"

I am in NO WAY romanticizing this movie at all. this is not a reflection of Jack Abbot's actual character, but he needed to be ooc for this to work. again, there is no happy ending and nothing is romanticized about this fic or the movie. I highly suggest watching the film once it releases on streaming services.

And Jack couldnât stop staring at you like heâd found the love of his life. His hazel eyes trailed along your body, and a deep blush painted across your face. Youâd caught him staring across the ER, but instead of looking away, he kept eye contact while his hands moved across a tablet. In one blink, he was moving toward you like a man on a mission. You couldnât move, couldnât breathe under the weight of his gaze.Â
In fewer than five steps, Jack closed in on you, and his hands lifted just to grip your hips and pull you into his orbit. Your breath hitched high in your throat at his closeness. Around you, the Pitt melted away, and all you could feel was Jack, Jack, Jackâ
âEarth to Y/n!âÂ
A snap near your face had you leaning back away from your phone. Your eyes widened as you stared at your small friend group. Suddenly, the entire world around you came crashing down in overlapping voices and the distinct smell of mall food, an odd combination of Japanese, Pizza, and sub sandwiches. Your phone stayed open to the latest chapter of your favorite Jack Abbot fanfic, and now looking at your friends, you knew youâd been caught. You quickly shut off your phone and placed it face down on the sticky table.Â
âSorry,â you muttered. âWhat were you saying?âÂ
Your best friend, Sarah, rolled her eyes. âYouâd know what we were saying if you werenât nose first in your phone. What was it this time? One of those smutty fanfics youâre so into these days?âÂ
âItâs definitely one about that silver-haired doctor,â your other friend, Haley, chimed in. âWhatâs his name again? Jake?âÂ
âJack,â you shot out before realizing your mistake. Youâd come off too strong, and your friends ate it up like vultures. âI-I meanââÂ
âYou really need to get laid,â Sarah told you, voice dipping into a border-line condescending tone. âYour daddy issues are showing, babes.âÂ
âI donât have daddy issues.â You rolled your eyes before taking a bite of your now-cooling food, slimy noodles sliding down your throat in one swallow. âAnd I donât want to get laid. Iâm perfectly content where Iâm at; thank you very little.âÂ
Haley hummed. âYouâre telling me that youâre happy reading hours and hours of fictional worlds while you could be out and about meeting new people. What if your future husband looks like this Jett?âÂ
âJack,â you correctedâagain. âAnd I donât want a future husband unless he looks like Shawn Hatosy dressed in a SWAT uniform.âÂ
âYou are so down bad for a fictional man. When was the last time you had an interest in someone who was actually . . . real?âÂ
You pursed your lips when no names came to mind. To get them off your back you could have mentioned the two-second crush you had on Luke Davis way back in ninth grade. But he had been eliminated from the list the moment you got back home and pulled out a Bucky Barnes fanfic where you found out you wouldnât mind an older man calling you doll. And plus, ninth grade was almost fifteen years ago. Confessing that while currently being in grad school at the ripe age of 24 would have been more embarrassing than saying nothing at all.Â
âA while,â you spat after settling on a response. âBut the modern online dating field is not for me. Every time I try one of the apps, I either get insulted or an unsolicited 3-inch-dick pic like itâs supposed to impress me. Unless you two have a magical solution to find me the picture-perfect man, Iâm perfectly okay spending my time reading fanfiction.âÂ
You went to spoon in another bite, but you noticed the way they glanced at each other. The corner of your lips tugged downward. âWhat? Why are you two looking at each other like that?âÂ
Sarah sucked in a breath. âWe werenât going to say anything butââÂ
âBut you look like you need it,â Haley finished the sentence before turning, hands already deep in her purse on the chair next to her.Â
You tried to not be offended by her words, but an ugly feeling bloomed in your chest. You hated the way they judged you. Fanfiction had quickly become a paradise away from the ugly world you lived in. If a few chapters and one shots here and there helped your mental health stay regulated, you saw no harm in divulging into the world of fiction. It also helped that most of the fics you read were tagged with âx-reader;â the idea of getting to put your name mixed in with iconic characters kept you feeling alive. Authors let you live lives you could never do in the real world. How could you give up that kind of mental freedom?Â
âHere,â Haley finally said as she pushed something towards you.Â
You eyed the red and white packaging with the words One Wish Willow written in fun lettering along with two cartoon drawn people. Hesitantly, you grabbed it and brought it closer to read.Â
âThe guy at the store said they actually work,â Sarah explained. âYou state a wish and break it, then tadaaaa your wish comes true.âÂ
Looking at it while spinning it in your hands, your nose crinkled. What Sarah just said sounded way too good to be true.Â
âThereâs no way,â you said, a bit awestruck. Your thumb ran across the words on the back of the package: Spark the middle and break in half. âI think you both got scammed.â You placed it back down on the table, but one look at the two of them gave you a sinking feeling in your stomach. âYou two actually believe this shit?â  Â
âLook, Y/n, we just want to look out for you,â Sarah said slowly as if she were talking to a child. âAnd if it doesnât work, it doesnât work, but thereâs no harm in trying. But we canât sit here and let you go on like this. Before you know it, youâre going to be fifty, living alone, and still reading stories about fictional characters. I mean, look at yourself.âÂ
To your surprise, Haley nodded along. âGrad school is killing you. And you canât say that youâll find a man once you graduate. Because by then, youâre going to find another excuse.â
You eyed the thing as their words sank thorns into your soul, and for some odd reason, you felt compelled to pick it back up again. You donât know if it was the idea that any wish you made would come true or the desire to prove them both wrong, but instead of leaving it there for them to take back, you grabbed it and pushed it deep in your purse.Â
âWhatever. But when it doesnât work, Iâm totally rubbing it in both your faces,â you said.Â
Finally, you shoved the last bite of your food into your mouth, but your mind was racing with the possibilities of what you could use the one wish willow for. Sure, Sarah and Haley wanted you to use it to get a boyfriend, but honestly, that seemed boring. The world, hypothetically, could be at your fingertips. What was stopping you from using it to become a millionaire, change everything you hated about yourself, stop world hunger.Â
The possibilities seemed to endlessly swim around your brain while you drove back home from the mall, the sky already dimming the closer you got to your destination. You sighed in relief once you pulled into your driveway and leaned your head against the steering wheel, eyes flitting towards your bag. Your fingers itched to pull the One Wish Willow out, and you, against everything, obeyed them. You picked at the heavy paper packaging, and the branch slid out right into your palm.Â
It was dark and hole-filled, and it barely weighed anything. You guessed that was necessary for easy breakage when you used it. You read over the instructions one more time before taking each end, holding it a few inches from your face.Â
Outside, the night was quiet. There were no joggers, no late-night walkers, no one to witness what you were about to do. You inhaled sharply and lowered the branch.Â
âThis is stupid,â you mumbled to yourself.Â
You almost put the branch back in the packaging, but your phone screen lighting up stopped you. You glanced over and caught the notification. A quick read told you that another author had updated a Jack Abbot series. Your heart panged.Â
Were you truly going to be alone forever, stuck reading fanfiction well into your fifties while pretending you lived in a different universe? Â
Before you could second guess yourself again, you took a hold of the branch.Â
âI wish Jack Abbot was real and would love me and do anything for me like he does in fanfiction.â
The branch snapped in two.Â
You squeezed your eyes shut, and your body tensed as you waited for something like a huge explosion to happen and for Jack to appear like some mythical genie. But when everything stayed quiet, you slowly opened your eyes. Frustrated tears welled in your lash line, and you threw the two pieces of the branch somewhere deep in your car. You jerked the door open and all but slammed it closed. Each step you took to your house reverberated into the concrete walkway. The automatic lights turned on while you unlocked the door with shaking hands, and the key missed twice before finally going in. With a harsh shove, the front door gave way into a dark home. By the looks of it, your mom probably wasnât home, or every light inside would have been on.Â
An eeriness crept over you, but through your glossy eyes and overwhelming feelings of loneliness, you brushed it off. The One Wish Willow was an absolute joke, and you knew you should have texted Sarah and Haley that it hadnât worked. Your chest tightened once you realized exactly why you didnât want to rub it in their faces right away. In the car, youâd given yourself the smallest morsel of hope that it would actually work. The idea of having your own Jack Abbot had taken over quicker than you would have liked. Even with all your constant reassurances to Sarah and Haley that you didnât want a man, that you were happy with being alone, you were beginning to feel the crux of being the last single person in your friend group. Â
Even the promise of a new chapter once you shuffled into bed wasnât enough to lift your mood. But as you tossed and turned, unable to fall asleep, you reached for your phone in need of familiar comfort. Your thumb pressed on the white T icon, and you scrolled until one caught your eye. The tags used xreader, but as you scrolled, you couldnât help but notice something peculiar.Â
Instead of the normal âY/nâ whenever Jack would âsayâ the readerâs name, your actual name stared back at you in every paragraph.Â
You blinked a few times, wondering if youâd gotten to the point where âY/nâ automatically became your given name. But when the words didnât change, your brows pinched. You didnât have any added mods, and the author stated that they hadnât given the reader a special nickname or anything of the sorts. You scrolled up until the page refreshed.Â
Surely there was a glitch you thought.Â
However, after the loading symbol went away, your name continued to be written in the fic. On one hand, you knew you should have put the phone down; obviously you were tired and sad and currently hallucinating. Yet, you continued reading on, already sucked deep into the story.Â
Jack didnât know what to do; youâd disappeared on him after an argument. His calls went unanswered, his messages left unread. His heart raced below his sternum in a panicked rhythm. He couldnât lose you, not after he already lost his wife. He refused to lose you. With a sharp inhale, he turned and faced an empty space to his right, hazel eyes boring into the readerâsâwait.Â
You pulled your phone away from your face as you sat up. Had you read that correctly?Â
âhazel eyes boring into the readerâs. He stood still, seemingly knowing that there was a presence he couldnât see but could always feel.Â
âIâll be there soon, sweetheart,â Jack spoke to no one. âAnd when I find you, Iâm going to make you so, so, so, so happy. Iâm exactly what you need and want. Iââ
Your phone screen went black after you pushed in the power button. The eerie feeling from earlier grew at the base of your skull, and your skin pricked with the sensation that someone was watching you. Your face whipped to the far corner of your room, the one that was always half-cast with a shadow after the sun went down. Logically, you knew no one was standing there, but you turned your flashlight on anyway. A quick scan around the room settled you some but not entirely.Â
You slowly lowered back down into your bed and pulled the covers up to your chin. Thankfully, sleep was already licking at the edges of your mind. But as you lolled into its grasp, you couldnât rid yourself of what the author made Jack say at the end.Â
âI wonât hesitate to do anything to make you mine.Â
¡ ¡ â ¡âśÂˇ â ¡ ¡
Two loud knocks at the front door followed by your mom screaming Y/n! Get your ass down here and answer the fucking door! had you shooting up from your bed.Â
Without even looking at yourself, you scampered down the stairs in just a pair of sweatpants and a tank top. You had no time to even think about what the person on the other side could even want before you wrenched the door open, and all reminders to look through the peep hole first failed entirely. Sun spots swirled in your vision, but once they settled enough for you to see who had been knocking, you froze entirely.Â
âThere you are, sweetheart.â Â
You knew that voice. Youâd heard that voice clearly through your TV speakers.Â
Your eyes widened, and a breath hitched high in your throat. You gripped the sides of the threshold with white knuckles. For a split-second, you wondered if you were still dreaming before wondering if youâd died in your sleep, because there was absolutely no fucking way the man standing on your doorstep was actually who you thought it would be.Â
Your body jolted under a firm hand, and you whirled around to see your motherâs figure standing behind you. She eyed you carefully before putting on a smile that only you knew to be very fake.Â
âHi there,â she said loudly, voice too chipper for 8:15 am. âHow can we help you?âÂ
The salt-and-pepper-curly-haired man smiled warmly, and his hazel eyes never left yours. âBaby, you didnât tell your mom about me?â he chuckled like this was all some inside joke.Â
Your mom glared at you from the side of her eye. âBaby?âÂ
âI really should have called beforehand that I was on my way over,â he explained before thrusting out his large hand. âJack Abbot. Itâs nice to meet my girlâs mom.âÂ
The way he said my girl had your heart racing for more than one reason. The main one being youâd never met this man in your entire life, unless you counted the multitude of fics you consumed to the point you felt like you did know himâJack. But that was all fiction uploaded to multiple websites, yet the man standing less than a foot away from you looked real and not a figment of your wild imagination. Hell, even your mom saw him, so to some degree you knew you were hallucinating or werenât dead upstairs.
âItâs nice to meet you too, Jack. Iâm sorry youâve seemed to slip my daughterâs mind,â she hissed the last bit out. âCome inside please.â She yanked you away from the door and whispered harshly in your ear, âYou could have told me about this.âÂ
Your jaw dropped before snapping back shut when your mind refused to catch up to the situation. Jackâif you could even think of him as your beloved fictional characterâstepped forward and placed a hand to the small of your back. His touch felt like electricity, white hot and zipping up your spine. He softly pushed you along until he fully got inside your hours.Â
âJack, letâs get you into the kitchen! Iâm sure I can make a quick breakfast for us while Y/n changes upstairs,â your mom stated, but the suggestiveness in her gaze wasnât as subtle as she thought it was.Â
Jack clicked his tongue against his cheek. âThat sounds lovely, but Iâm afraid I already made plans with Y/n to go out for breakfast.â He wrapped an arm around your shoulders and pulled you in like a rag doll. âIsnât that right, sweetheart,â he cooed.Â
As if a spell had been cast over you, you nodded numbly. âYeah,â you managed to croak. âWeâre going out for breakfast.âÂ
âLetâs get you changed, baby, and then weâll get heading out,â he said. âIt was nice meeting you.â With not another glance toward you mom, he walked you over to the staircase and motioned for you to go first.Â
Once the two of you made it into your room, you closed the door before pushing your back against the grain to put some space between you and supposedly Jack Abbot. Â
âOkay, what the fuck man,â you sneered. âIs this some stupid cosplay? Did Sarah and Haley put you up to this? Because coming to my house and pretending we know each other let alone dating is downright creepy and stalker behavior.âÂ
âI have no idea what youâre talking about,â he said while cocking his head to the side. âDid you hit your head? Should I look at it for you?â He stepped forward and raised his hands, but you were quick to shake your head.Â
âNo; Iâm fine,â you said. âIâm just . . .â You closed your eyes. âI donât know why youâre here. You donât exist here.âÂ
Jack paused for a minute before laughing loudly. âBaby, are you taking the piss? Of course I exist here; you know I exist only for you.â This time, he walked until your fronts were almost pressing. The warm, spicy scent of his cologne hit your nose. His hands did not touch you, but the twitches in his fingers told you he wanted to. âI told you last night that Iâd come find you, baby.âÂ
âHuh?âÂ
Jackâs eyebrows furrowed. âAre you sure you didnât hit your head? You asked for me last night after the mall. I know Iâm old, but how could you forget so soon, baby?âÂ
His words hit you like an 18-wheeler to the stomach.Â
The broken-in-two One Wish Willow that remained in your car filled your thoughts. You swore it hadnât worked, because last night nothing had happened. And then you remembered one of the fine print warnings.Â
*Wait up to 24 hours for your wish to come true.
It was as if it all made sense now. The fucking gimmick worked; you couldnât rub itâs failure in Sarah and Haleyâs faces anymore. Jack fucking Abbot was in your bedroom acting like the two of you were romantically together.Â
Your wishâagainst all oddsâhad come true.Â
Happiness washed over you like a tidal wave, and you stepped right into Jackâs orbit, arms coming up to wrap around his middle. You couldnât believe the way you fit right into his chest, and you were elated to hear his heart beat so fast at your closeness.Â
âThere you go, pretty girl,â Jack whispered against your temple. His hand gently rested against the back of your head. âIâve missed you so, so, so, so much. Iâm yours forever; Iâll do anything for you.âÂ
In the throes of his whispered promises, you forgot about the smallest warning buried within the fine print of the One Wish Willow Packaging.Â
*Side effects of a wish may include violent tendencies, self-mutilation, and unexpected behavior. Please wish responsibly.Â
¡ ¡ â ¡âśÂˇ â ¡ ¡
Life with Jack was infinite bliss, and youâd be a fool to look a gift horse in the mouth.Â
He was the perfect man and exactly the type of person youâd been secretly wishing for the entire time. If you were truly honest with yourself, all the times you said you were happy were lies upon lies upon lies. You hated how Sarah and Haley went on double dates with their boyfriends all the time while leaving you behind. Their happiness just showed that if you didnât have them, you had no one.Â
No one to laugh with; no one to be around; no one to love. Jack filled in those spaces like glue holding your life together. Suddenly, you didnât have to wonder who youâd take to the movies to see the latest film. You didnât have to sit alone in your bed while hoping for someone to come along and sweep you off your feet like men did in stories. You didnât even have to worry about feeling scared when you slept. Jack apparently had an affinity for watching you rest.Â
When Jack was aroundâwhich was pretty much all the timeâyou were never alone.Â
A few weeks after he showed up on your doorstep, you made plans to introduce him to Sarah and Haley at the local bar the three of you frequented. Youâd been excited for them to see what had happened, to see how Jack made you happy. Jack seemed to be passive about it, but one smile his way had him melting to your every whim.Â
âWhat makes you happy makes me happy,â he had told you before pressing his lips deeply against yours. âDo I make you happy, sweetheart?âÂ
âSo much,â you had whispered back against his lips.Â
However, now that you were seated next to Jack and their eyes were filled with skepticism and doubt, an ugly feeling settled inside your chest. You tried to focus on the game of Jenga, but the weight of their gaze pressed heavy on your mood that continued to sour the longer the night progressed.Â
As you tried your best to shuffle another block out, Sarah leaned forward.Â
âSo . . . Jack . . . where do you work?â she asked.Â
Jack rubbed at his jaw while he thought, and your focus shifted to the way his bicep bulged in the short-sleeved shirt he wore out.Â
âIâm a senior attending at an ER up in Pittsburgh,â he stated.
Haley raised an eyebrow. âThen why are you here? Surely your hospital keeps your leash a bit tight.âÂ
You pulled the block out successfully and held it up for Jack to see. He mouthed a good girl and winked, sending you into a blushy mess before answering.Â
âIâm on a well-needed sabbatical right now. My girl needed me here, and I couldnât think of being anywhere else.â His hand came to rest at your nape, and his fingers squeezed.Â
âWhat happens when your sabbatical is up? Y/nâs in grad school right now, and I doubt she can do the long distance,â Sarah explained, and that ugly feeling roared inside your chest. Â
Jack pursed his lips and sat back against the couch. âIâm sure that weâll work something out when we cross that bridge. Iâm not opposed to long distance, but Iâm also not opposed to her moving close to me either.âÂ
Haley let out a soft scoff to which you looked at her strangely.Â
âDo you have something to say, Haley?â you questioned.Â
She looked like a deer caught in headlights. âI-I just think that moving in with someone youâve been with for a few weeks is a bit fast.âÂ
âIâm not getting any younger,â you tried to joke, but the tone of your voice said that you were anything but joking. âAnd it wouldnât be too terrible. After this semester Iâm changing to online classes anyway.âÂ
Sarahâs face pinched tightly. âWhat happened to moving onto campus with us next semester?âÂ
You shrugged lazily. âThe thought about moving was getting to be too stressful.â You linked your arm into Jackâs. âJack suggested online classes, and it was like a weight lifted off my chest.âÂ
Your friends stared widely with their jaws unhinged.Â
Sarah waved a hand around. âHold on. Just because he told you to do something, you just did it without discussing it with anyone else? Y/n, we wonât be able to afford the deposit for the apartment if you pull out.â Â
âPlus, what if he dumps you halfway through the year?â Haley suddenly asked in a stage whisper, not caring if Jack heard the question. Â
Next to you, Jackâs entire body tensed. âIâm sorryâwhat?â
She at least had some decency to understand that her question was invasive. âYa know . . . what if yâall have, like, a really bad argument or something? Some relationships donât end up lasting long enough for a couple to live together. Plus, with your age gap itâs inevitable thatââÂ
Jack suddenly stood from the couch, and his towering body cast a shadow across the Jenga tower. He frowned deeply, and his darkening eyes narrowed down at your friends. His fists curled at his sides while his head tilted very slowly.Â
âYou donât know anything about our relationship,â he hissed. âSo I wouldnât be so presumptuous if I were you.âÂ
Sarah leaned back enough to look him in the eye at an angle. âDude, weâre just looking out for our friend.âÂ
âYeah,â Haley said lightly. âNo need to get so upset about it.âÂ
He ran his tongue along his teeth. âIâm upset because you had the gall to even think Iâd break up with her.â He bent in slightly at the waist. âIâm in love with her; she is my everything. Whatever she asks me to do, I will do it without hesitation.âÂ
His voice rose with anger on every word, and soon, the entire bar was looking towards your small group. You nervously shifted on the couch, but the annoyance of their questions kept you seated and stopped you from pulling Jack back.Â
Jack turned his head and spotted an empty beer bottle. He turned back to look at your friends, and without breaking eye contact, he grabbed the bottle. In one fluid motion, he swung it down, and the glass shattered against the side of the table. At the sound, you, Sarah, and Haley stood up. They backed away slightly while you stepped forward to be at Jackâs side. Yet, he paid no attention to you.Â
âNo one on this earth will ever comprehend what it feels like to love someone as much as I love her,â he said, timber dark and serious. It sent shockwaves through your soul. âIâd rather kill myself than ever hurt her or be without her. Every ounce of my blood that keeps my beating heart alive belongs to her and her alone.âÂ
Before you could do or say anything, Jack dragged the jagged edge of the broken bottle from his wrist and towards the inside of his elbow, and dark blood welled and dripped from the long gash. Sharp, surprised and horrified gasps rang through the air.Â
When your eyes caught the red thick smear, you reached forward and yanked the bottle out of his hand. âJack!âÂ
At the sound of your voice, Jackâs eyes softened instantly, and all tension in his body melted away. Any glimpse of the Jack moments ago was gone, but the damage had already been done. Everyone, including Sarah and Haley, watched on with scared eyes as you gently set the bottle down. You said nothing and grabbed your (Jackâs) jacket and purse. Your hand found Jackâs quickly, and without saying anything to your friends, you tugged him out of the bar and towards his car. Thankfully, he didnât fight for the keys, and you took off, leaving the bar to turn into a speck in your rearview mirror.Â
The ride back to your house was oddly quiet. Jack stared out the window the entire time, never once looking over at you. When you parked the car in the driveway, you shifted in your seat and turned to face him.Â
âJack,â you said softly. âWhyâd you do that?âÂ
Not being on to deprive himself of your face, Jack turned too with hunched shoulders. âIâm sorry.âÂ
You rested a hand on his cheek. âI know youâre sorry, but you scared everyone. And you hurt yourself.âÂ
âI know. I donât know why I did that, but I couldnât let them keep talking about usâabout you like that. I love you so much; thatâs why I did it.âÂ
âJack, I donât need you to cut yourself because you love me, IââÂ
âDo you love me?â he interrupted.Â
You paused. âI do.âÂ
Jack leaned back into his seat. âYou never say it like I do.â He sat up straight again in a jerky motion, and he placed his hands on your cheeks and held your face there. You watched his hazel hues melt into something darker. âDo you love me? Say you love me. I need to hear you say you love me, sweetheart.âÂ
Your throat bobbed in a thick swallow. âI love you, Jack.âÂ
Like at the bar, he all but melted back into his seat before leaning forward to kiss you. You let his lips languidly move against yours in sloppy motions. His hands tightened around your face, and with a small gasp, your mouth opened just enough for him to shove his hot tongue between your teeth. You moaned at the taste of him.
Before you could go any farther, he pulled back and licked his lips. âAre you going to listen to them?âÂ
Your head reeled at the sudden change of events. âWho?âÂ
âYour friends,â he spat bitterly. âThey wonât change your mind about moving with me once I need to go back to work?âÂ
You hummed and tried to lean back in for another kiss, but Jack stopped your motion. His eyes bore into yours deeply in almost a pleading manner.Â
âTell me you want to move with me. I canât be without you, baby. I wasnât lying when I said Iâd rather kill myself than not be with you. Do you want me to kill myself? Iâll tell you how Iâd do it. Instead of my wrists, Iâd take one of my scalpels and drag it along my throat.âÂ
Your heart beat wildly at his words, and concern corroded any love you felt for Jack in that moment.Â
He looked at you through lidded eyes. âIs that what you want? You want me to die? Want me to commit suicide just to show you how much Iâm obsessed with you?âÂ
You shook your head between his hands.Â
He grinned stretched impossibly wide, but his eyes stayed dead and unmoving. âThen say what I want to hear, sweetheart. Itâll all be so, so, so much better when you say it.âÂ
âI want to move with you Jack. I want to follow you to Pittsburgh or wherever you go after this.âÂ
You were rewarded with another deep, invasive kiss that left you gasping for air. Instead of fully pulling back, Jack breathed heavily while his nose nuzzled into your face.Â
âMaybe itâll be good when I donât have to listen to Sarah and Haley anymore,â you softly mentioned.Â
Jack froze near your hairline but didnât say anything.Â
âThey were kind of rude at the bar. To think they were the ones who wanted to push me to get a boyfriend in the first place. Like, imagine if you hadnât shown up.âÂ
âYouâre no one elseâs but mine,â he growled, chest beginning to heave at the thought of you with someone who wasnât him, kissing someone who wasnât him, fucking someone who wasnât him. âIâm never going to leave you.â His eyes fluttered closed. âIâm going to make sure your friends have no impact on your life again. I promise.âÂ
You giggled, not fully knowing the meaning of his words. âWeâll be in Pittsburgh. Iâm sure they wonât want to make the drive. Donât worry about them putting any more unsolicited input into our relationship.âÂ
Soon after Jack gave you one more kiss, you slipped into your house knowing Jack would be back in the morning to pick you up for another breakfast date. You paid no mind to the sound of Jack pulling away from your house or the way his car suddenly passed by in the opposite direction moments later.Â
Because if you had, you would have realized he wasnât driving to his house, oh no, he was driving back in the direction of the bar to make sure he kept his promise.Â
¡ ¡ â ¡âśÂˇ â ¡ ¡
Waking up during the night wasnât uncommon.Â
Most times, you never fully managed to sleep deep enough to stay asleep for more than four hours, always having to get up for a drink of water or a bathroom break. But tonight, you woke up for a completely different reason. From the corner of your room, a noise reached you through a deep dream in a wet, continual plat, plat, plat, plat.Â
With bleary eyes, you looked around the room through barely slotted eyelids. Nothing seemed to jump out at you until you glanced at the shadowed corner. There, someone stood, their outline barely visible against the black background. You blinked rapidly in a desperate attempt to get your eyes focused.Â
A sigh of relief wheezed through your chest when you realized that the person was just Jack; although you were confused as to why he picked the corner when you had already set up a chair near your bed the first time you found him watching you sleep. You knew he liked to take his prosthesis off after dark to give his limb a break. The least you could do was make sure he was comfortable.Â
âJack?â you called out, voice scratchy and slurry with sleep. âWhatâre you doinâ in the corner?âÂ
When he failed to answer, you pushed yourself up halfway with your arm. You reached for the lamp on your bedside table, but the floor creaking beneath his weight made you stop.Â
Plat, plat, plat, plat, plat.Â
âDonât turn on the light,â he whispered.Â
You slung your legs over the side of the bed and reached out a hand. âCould you at least come and sit down? Your leg must be killing you.â By now, your eyes had adjusted to the dark atmosphere, and you peered over at him when you noticed something splashed on his face. âDid you get mud on you?âÂ
Jack took a step forward, and his shoes squished against your hardwood floors. He stopped a few feet away from you, and thatâs when a thick, metallic waft hit your senses. You urgently rubbed at the skin between your lip and the bottom of your nose in an attempt to disrupt the onslaught of iron. Your brows pinched as you looked up at him with utter confusion.Â
Plat, plat, plat, plat, plat.Â
âWhat are you covered in, baby?â You reached out to touch a large stain on the hem of his shirt. Your fingers game back slick. âWhat the fuck,â you whispered. Jackâs words be damned; you reached over and turned on the lamp.
As the light drenched the room, horror seized your chest with large hands at the sight in front of you. The noise that had awakened you from your sleep was the steady drip of blood that trickled from Jackâs pant leg. The stain youâd touched was larger under the light, and the lower half of his shirt was drenched in the bodily fluid. His arms that were normally tanned and freckled were covered in blood like cleaning gloves, a harsh line of red cutting around his bicep.Â
Bile rose from deep in your stomach, and the acrid taste coated your tongue.Â
âJack,â you whispered in terror. Sleepâs effect had been ripped from you the moment you realized what he was covered in. âW-why are you . . . covered in blood?âÂ
Jackâs mouth twisted in an elated smile as he looked down at his lower half. âDo you not like it, sweetheart?â Despite his leg, he kneeled between your legs, and his dripping hands rested against your thighs. He looked up at your face with a pinched expression, similar to one youâd see on a sad puppy. âDo you not like it?âÂ
âItâs blood, Jack. Why are you covered in blood?âÂ
âNot like I donât deal with blood on the daily.â He licked his lips. âYou should be asking whose blood it is Iâm covered in, baby.â He leaned in closer to your face, and your eyes burned with the smell. âCâmon; ask me.âÂ
You swallowed a frustrated groan before whispering, âWhose blood are you covered in?âÂ
His head lolled to the side. âRemember when I promised you that no one would ever speak out against us again?â Jack moved in closer and pressed his cheek against yours so that his lips were right near your ear. âLetâs just say I made sure that wouldnât ever happen again . . . permanently.âÂ
It felt like all the blood drained from your face in an icy instant; a complete contrast from the way Jack licked a hot strip up from your pressure point to your ear. Your mouth dried up completely.Â
âDonât worry, baby. Those girls are never going to bother us ever again.âÂ
âJack,â you whimpered, suddenly scared of the man between your legs.Â
He hushed you softly. âAnd I made sure that your mother was also removed from the picture. I couldnât have her waking up to find me like this.âÂ
Your shoulders caved in, and the smallest whimper pressed through your lips. At the sound, Jack lurched back to look at your face. Within three breaths, all emotions washed from his face as he realized that you were scaredâscared of him.Â
Now, he couldnât have that, could he?Â
His hand rushed up to your face, and his fingers crushed your cheeks together. He stood to his feet, but his face stayed close to yours, his warm breath fanning across your nose and lips.Â
âThereâs nothing for you to be afraid of,â he said calmly as if he hadnât just implied that heâd killed your best friends and your mother. âBesides, isnât this what you wished for?âÂ
Even with his strength, you managed a small shake of your head.Â
He pouted. âNo? But I could have sworn you said I wish Jack Abbot would love me and do anything for me.âÂ
âI d-didnât ask for you to kill my friends and mom,â you cried through smushed lips.Â
Jack nodded along like he agreed with you before barking out a laugh. âBut you said itâd be good when you wouldnât have to listen to them anymore. Thatâs what you said!â his voice thundered in your face. âI did exactly what you told me to, so why donât you FUCKING LOVE ME?âÂ
You tried to jerk your face out his hand, but his hold tightened, fingers digging into your teeth through your cheeks. Your eyes shut closed, but that did little to appease Jackâs anger. This wasnât what you wanted; you never wanted your wish to turn into him harming people for you.Â
âI-I do-do love you, Jack,â you cried while tears traced down your cheeks.Â
He frowned intensely, lips forming an upside-down u. âI donât believe you.â His unoccupied left hand gripped onto the pudge at your hipbone. âI can feel you shaking like a leaf. Itâs okay, baby. I would never hurt you.âÂ
Somehow, you knew he was telling the truth, though it didnât help you feel less scared. Your thighs rubbed against each other in a nervous manner, and Jackâs eyes tracked the movement. However, he thought it was for a different reason.Â
âOh,â he breathed, eyes widening at the idea formulating in his sick, twisted head. âYou want to show me that you love me? Is that it, sweetness?âÂ
His left hand released your hip and trailed lower and toward the right, and you inhaled sharply when he pressed his fingers to your core. You reached out and gripped his wrist, halting any other movement from his appendage. Â
âNo,â you stated. âJack, this isnât-this isnât normal.âÂ
He pressed his hard chest forward, and the cooled blood began soaking through your sleep shirt. You cringed and shuddered when the wet fabric clung to your skin.Â
âYour heart is racing,â he whispered in awe. âFor me? Is your heart racing for me, sweetheart?â He dropped to his knees this time and pressed his ear right to your heart. He exhaled breathily at the sound. âYeah; thatâs for me.â His next inhale was sharp. âI can smell you. Youâre utterly dripping.â
âIâm not,â you argued. âIâmââ A wince turned whine cut you off after Jack squeezed your sides painfully.Â
âYou know better than to lie to me.â His matted curls pushed against his forehead as he twisted his face to look downward. âRemember,â he muttered, âyou wished for this.âÂ
His hand planted itself in the middle of your chest and pushed you down to your bed, your spine hitting your mattress so hard it pushed out a small oomph. Â
âWait- stop-â
Jack shushed you, his hands, still covered in blood, yanked the sleep shorts youâd been wearing down your legs. Your legs kicked and twisted, trying in vain to stop him, but he had them down and hanging off one ankle despite your efforts.
âYou just need to remember why you love me,â those big, calloused hands pushed your thighs apart, keeping them pinned open despite your efforts to close them. His hot breath against your core shocked you, your wiggling and writhing halting for a moment. He licked a stripe through your folds, humming in satisfaction. âNo one can make you feel as good as I can. No one.â
âJack please!â Your hands were pushing at his head, trying to get him away from you, but he barely budged, not even acknowledging your efforts.
âAlready begging for me and Iâve barely touched you,â his chuckle vibrated through your traitorous body as he laid kisses over your mound. âI told you, you love me.â
âYou have to stop! I donât want this!â
âYes you do,â Jack wrapped both of your wrists in one of his hands, holding them down against your stomach to keep you pinned. âYou want this. I donât know why youâre trying to lie to me when your cunt is being so honest, sweetheart.â
Humiliatingly, he was right. You could feel how wet you were, practically dripping down onto the bedsheets below you, your hole clenching and begging for something deep inside it. But you didnât want this. Right? No, of course you didnât. This was the man who had just admitted to killing your mother and best friends. Their blood was still on the hands that held you open and in place as his mouth descended on you.
But it was hard to stop the whine you let out when his tongue began tracing around your clit. The pressure was firm and insistent, sending bursts of pleasure coursing through you against your will.
You fought through the sensations, trying to focus on wiggling out of his grip, but inevitably your focus was drawn back between your legs. Jack was unrelenting, repeating the motions and keeping a steady pace, like he knew exactly how to push your buttons. You supposed he did, having been created by some sick force of nature just for you.
Belatedly, you realised exactly what his tongue was spelling out against you:
J-A-C-K A-B-B-O-T
His own name, again and again, all at the same speed and intensity.Â
Gradually, your desperate attempts to flee were being tempered by the pleasure rocketing up your spine. Your twisting and writhing to get away had turned into rocking and grinding against his face, using his bruising grip on your wrists as leverage. But while your body betrayed you, your mind didnât.
Through the gasps and whines and moans he was yanking out of you, you tried your best to keep up the protests. Your increasingly weak protests of âNo!â and âPlease stop!â fell on deaf ears, until, right as you neared your peak and, fearing what the impending orgasm might do to your psyche, you got through to him. But not in the way that youâd hoped.
âStop! Stop, Jack, or Iâll never love you!â
He froze, pulling his face away from your folds but keeping his hold on you firm. You were gasping for air, eyes firmly shut. You were afraid to look at him, afraid heâd see just how close he was to breaking you.
âYou want me to kill myself?â His grip around your wrists tightened even more and his fingers holding your thigh open tensed, nails digging into your skin. He didnât let up, despite the yelp that left your lips. âIs that what you want? You want to watch me slit my fucking wrists right now? Wanna watch me bleed out all over you? Because I will. I love you more than anything - more than life itself - and you are breaking my heart.â
âJack, I-â
âDo you want that?â His voice raised, eyes wide and manic. âIâm all you need, baby. If I die, you have nothing. You made me kill your mom, your friends, and if Iâm gone, what do you have left? You need me just like I need you.â
âNo, no I didnât make you-â
âYou said you didnât want to have to listen to them anymore,â Jack stood from the floor, his blood stained figure looming over you as you cowered back against the mattress. âI did exactly what you asked for, and now you donât have to listen to them anymore.â
You were shaking, trying to look away, trying not to think about how everyone you loved had died because of a poor choice of words and Jackâs instability.
Jackâs hand grabbed your chin, forcing your eyes on his. His expression had softened, the lines on his face deepening as he stared down at you.
âDonât make me kill myself because I did what you wanted,â he was begging, the whiplash from his rapid change in demeanor taking a moment to register in your mind. âDonât make me, please.â
âI-I wonât,â you swallowed around the lump forming in your throat. âI wonât make you kill yourself, Jack. Please donât do that.â
âThen tell me you love me,â his eyes darkened again and the frown fell from his face.Â
âJack-â
âTell me,â the tone of his voice dropped, practically growling at you as his fingers tightened against your jaw. âYou love me.â
âIâŚâ
The words stuck in your throat. The love youâd felt for him from before was still there, but your terror and grief was overshadowing it, making it impossible to verbalize.
Jack sighed, his expression once again changing, this time to disappointment. He tutted at you, like you were a small child failing to follow directions.
âI guess I just have to remind you how much you love me.â
There was no time for you to question what that meant, but you found out quickly. Jackâs hands wrapped around your waist. Before you could even gasp at the rapid change, his thighs were straddling yours, his palm planted between your shoulder blades to hold you down.
âIâm going to make you tell me you love me,â you could hear clinking and shuffling behind you, but it took a moment for it to connect that he was undoing his belt.
âWait, Jack!â Bucking your hips and trying to push yourself up was futile, his weight and the strength of the muscles cording his arm simply too much for you to fight back against. This wasnât what you wanted for your first time. Youâd been hoping for a romantic dinner with him, followed by sweet, slow sex, not him covered in your loved ones blood as he took you by force. âJack please, Iâm a virgin!â
âOh, sweetheart,â the heat of his chest, pressing against your back as he leaned down, was scalding. His fingers gently tucked your hair behind your ear, his lips pressing a kiss against your cheek. You didnât realize youâd been crying until his tongue darted out to lick up the droplet. âDonât worry. Iâm all you need. Iâll be the only man to ever have you like this. Iâll take such good care of you.â
And then he was sliding in, stretching your traitorously wet walls around his length. Fuck, he was thick. You felt every ridge and vein as he sunk into you as deep as he could, until the tip was pressing against your cervix. It was impossible to stop the moan you let out, the noise mixing with his grunt as he ground against your ass.
âJack, pleaseâŚâ
âYou feel so good around me, baby,â He let more of his weight fall against you, pushing you even further into the crumpled sheets. One of his big arms slid around your neck, pressing your throat into the crook of his elbow.Â
âYou need to sto-â
You choked on your words when Jackâs arm tightened, his bicep and forearm cutting off your air supply.
âThe only thing I need,â his voice was low and gravely, his lips pressed against the shell of your ear. âIs for you to stop pretending this doesnât feel good, and let me make love to the love of my life.â
Your whole body tensed, walls trying to push him out, as he began to withdraw slowly.
âYeah, thatâs it,â he was panting against your ear now. His little groans and sighs rattled around in your head, clouding your already conflicted senses. âSqueeze me just like that.â
You felt yourself flutter involuntarily around him as his thick cock bullied its way back inside of you. Fighting against his hold to get air into your lungs, your own breathing picked up in pace, each exhale forcibly pushed out when he sunk in.Â
Jackâs pace was slow. Each thrust was long, pausing to grind against you when he bottomed out, his head pushing hard into the deepest parts of you. Youâd never considered yourself a masochist before, but the little jolts of pain mingled with the pleasure, pushing you even higher. The confusing signals sent to your brain were sapping your willpower. You needed to fight him off, needed him to get away from you, but your body was tightening around him, pulling him in.
God, it felt good, but you had to hold out. You still needed to find a way to break free and to get rid of him.
But it was growing increasingly hard to focus on anything other than the sensations between your legs when your head grew fuzzy from the lack of air and your clit was dragging against the sheets as every move he made rocked your body. Heâd gotten you close before with his mouth, but now the dizzying pleasure of his cock had your eyes crossing.
âYouâre doing so good, my sweet girl,â his words were whispered into your hair as his pace gradually increased. He never fully withdrew, but his hips were bouncing against your ass as his slow, grinding rhythm transitioned into hard and fast thrusts. âDoing so good for me. I can feel how close you are, I want you to tell me you love me when you cum, ok?â
You tried to shake your head no, trying your hardest to beat back the ever rising pressure of your impending orgasm, but Jackâs hold around your neck stopped you from moving. The only noises you could squeeze out through his hold were little whines and whimpers.
âYouâre going to say it,â he pulled you in tighter, leaning all of his weight onto you. His hand not around your neck slipped between you and the sheet. âSay it, say it, say it.â
The first brush of his fingers against your clit was all it took for you to shatter in his arms. You spasmed and clenched around him, your eyes rolling back into your head. Your trembling hands scrambled for a hold on the sheets when he pinched the little bundle of nerves between his fingers. It was overwhelming, the intensity of your orgasm squeezing you so tightly around him that you nearly pushed him out.
Jack responded by thrusting even harder inside of you, all the while mumbling, âsay it, say it, say it.â
But you didnât. You werenât sure if it was your willpower that kept the words from falling from your lips, or the debilitating pleasure that was rendering your mind nearly blank, but you didnât say it.
Jack roared in frustration as the last waves of your orgasm faded, leaving you shaking beneath him. You were unprepared for him to rip himself away from you, leaving you completely free of him for just a moment. Your brain cleared slightly without his skin on yours. There was only about a second for you to try to will your still trembling body to get up and run, but you ran out of time.Â
He flipped you over onto your back, spreading your legs wide and forcing himself between them before you could snap them shut. His eyes were wild, his chest heaving with every breath.
And, for the first time, you saw his cock, pointing up and out of where his jeans were just barely pulled down. He was big, even bigger than youâd pictured when heâd first slid inside you. Long and thick, flushed red and dripping with your juices. In any other situation, youâd be reaching for him, eager to get your hands on him. Even despite the position you found yourself in, against your will, you felt your mouth water and hands itching to reach out and touch him.Â
But you managed to hold back, trying to squirm away from him up the bed. He stopped you before you could put any meaningful distance between you, though, his hands found the back of your thighs, pushing them up and pressing them down, folding you in half.
âI gave you everything,â Jack looked close to tears, but you couldnât tell if it was from anger or sadness. âI would do anything for you. Why donât you love me?â
You didnât have an answer for him. How do you answer when the man confessing his undying love to you killed your family and then took your virginity against your will? What do you say to the man taking off his shirt, revealing the bloody mess of his chest, slashes covering the skin on his left pec?
There were certainly no words to be found when it clicked that those lines were your initials, carved into the skin over his heart. They werenât bleeding anymore, but the skin was red and angry, blood still smeared over his skin. The more you looked, the more you realized the incisions were much more precise than youâd realized. Jack specialized in trauma procedures, of course the self inflicted modification heâd given himself would be perfect.
Your first instinct was awe, quickly followed by disgust at yourself and fear at the sight of his dedication to you. But you couldnât help tracing your eyes over the split skin, admiring the clean lines. It sparked something deep inside you, to see him declare your ownership over him so blatantly on his skin, despite the fact that you still told yourself that you didnât want to hold his leash.
âAll I want is to be yours, sweetheart,â Jackâs intensity hadnât dimmed, but his anger seemed to be gone for the moment. He sounded miserable, literally begging on his knees before you âPlease let me be yours.â
âJack . . ..â
âPlease,â he still had your knees pressed to your chest, his fingers flexing and digging into your flesh.
You didnât know if it was the pathetic way he was begging for your love or the devotion in his eyes that broke you. You could tell yourself that you were playing along, trying to go along with it to get away from him, but you didnât know if that was true.Â
âOk.â
Jack lit up immediately, all traces of his despair disappearing in an instant. The wide and handsome smile that split his face was at odds with the blood still smeared across his body. The juxtaposition was jarring, adding to the warring feelings rising in you.
âCan you say it for me?â
âI love you,â your voice was barely above a whisper. You didnât know if you meant it - you werenât sure you wanted to know, either - but Jack took you at your word.
âI love you, too.â
And then he was sliding back in, pushing through your folds and sinking into you up to the hilt. With your legs still folded up and resting over your shoulders as he bent forward, he felt even bigger than he had before, filling you completely to the brim. You swore you could feel him in your throat.
When he pressed fully into you, he leant down, his lips connecting to yours. You didnât bother to fight him, returning the kiss as he fell into a rhythm. His tongue pushed between your lips as his hips pulled back from yours.
Jack sheathed himself back inside you, thrusting hard and punching a broken sound out of your mouth. He swallowed the noise, continuing to devour you as he continued. Every slow withdrawal was followed by a brutal thrust in.
âI love you,â Jack broke the kiss. His lips traveled down over your cheek until they reached your neck. His teeth scraped over a spot just below your jaw that had you keening, arching up into him.
He continued to work the spot, kissing and sucking and biting until he was satisfied with the blooming bruise before he was moving onto another, unblemished section of skin. It hurt, your skin burning from the contact of his lips, but you couldnât bring yourself to do anything besides cry and moan.Â
âFuck!â
You couldnât help the expletive when his hips shifted, his thrust pushing directly against a spot inside you that had your back arching into him. It shot sparks through you, the sensation tightening into a knot in your stomach. Jack adjusted his angle to hit that spot head on again and again. A strangled groan vibrated through Jack when you clenched around him as a result.
âTake me so well,â Jack disconnected from your neck. His forehead rested against your shoulder, looking down to where you were connected, but the bulk of his body blocked your view.Â
Jack pushed back, sitting up to kneel between your legs. His large hands kept your legs over his shoulders, holding you in place, even though you werenât sure youâd be strong enough to get away from him, even if you wanted to. He felt too good buried deep inside you.
Your brain felt foggy, the combination of sensations washing away your self preservation and critical thinking. When Jack had you on your stomach, you were being taken, but here, you felt like you were being worshipped. There was still fear simmering under your skin, but it was taking a backseat to the orgasm rising in your gut.
âGod, look at you,â Jack was panting, his pace increasing and his eyes focused down between your legs. You didnât realize what he was looking at until one of his hands let go of your thigh to press down on your stomach against the visible outline of his cock. âCan see how much I'm stretching you out.â
Your body seized, the breath flying out of your lungs. That added pressure made him feel even bigger. It triggered your orgasm, pleasure crashing through you unexpectedly. It caught you off guard and unprepared. Your head lolled back, eyes fluttering as your mind went blank. Jack kept his hand there, pinning you down as he kept thrusting into you, his rhythm faltering slightly as he battled his way through the continued clenching of your walls. He wasnât letting you come down, giving you no reprieve from the waves of pleasure wracking your shaking body beneath his.
âOh, fuck,â Jack finally took his hand away from your lower stomach, but you still didnât get a moment to breath. His fingers found your clit again, rapidly circling the small bud. âOne more, baby, one more.â
âNo, Jack, no,â you started to try to wiggle away. Through your addled brain, deja vu struck you. It made you almost want to laugh. You didnât want to get away from him out of fear - although fear was certainly still there - no, instead you were trying to get away from the rapidly building overstimulation. âI canât, not again!â
âYes you can,â his rhythm picked up, hips moving even faster against you. The squelching and slapping sounds filling the room were obscene. âI know whatâs best for you. Trust me.â
You were chanting; âNo, no, no!â even as your core tightened, the rapid build up of your third orgasm contradicting with your words. You were sure Jack could feel it, too. The way your walls clenched and fluttered around him was telling.
âCâmon, sweetheart,â sweat was beading on his chest, mixing with the blood on his skin and dripping onto you, leaving small splatters on your stomach. âCum for me and Iâll cum for you.â
âJack!â
You broke. This orgasm hit you like a truck. You felt it physically snap inside of you, the tension releasing a flood of endorphins into your blood. Through the haze wiping your mind blank, you heard Jack cry out, hips stuttering and pushing into the hilt. You could feel the heat as he spilled deep inside of you. It felt like a brand, burning you from the inside out and soaking your depths in him.
The waves of pleasure mounted, consuming you until you couldnât take it anymore. Your eyes rolled back into your head and everything went black.
¡ ¡ â ¡âśÂˇ â ¡ ¡
Jack had fallen asleep, and you were far from turning over and snuggling into his side after you'd been ripped from the consuming darkness.Â
You ached in ways you didnât know were possible. Every limb felt heavy like youâd been shacked to a ball and chain, and you knew every step would be agony. The bruises heâd left behind would mottle your skin for weeks as reminders of what he did to you, to your friends, to your mom. Staying next to him in bed would ease the pain, but you needed to get up. The thought of waking Jack sent your heart into a panicked rhythm, and you were sure the sound alone would wake him up. Soft snores and grunts sounded from his lips every few seconds.Â
Centimeter by centimeter, you pushed up from your lying position. You thanked anyone who was listening for the fact that he hadnât slung an arm around your waist to hold you down further. Instead of your normal wake-up routine, ten minutes must have passed by the time you stood from your bed. You could not let Jack wake up under any circumstances. You took another glance back at Jack.Â
Still asleep.Â
Gingerly, you grabbed your phone off the side table and began to shuffle towards your bathroom. You held back the urge to throw up when your foot slid through a puddle of thickened, coagulated blood. With trembling hands, you closed the bathroom door, mentally cursing yourself when it gave off the tiniest click. You held your breath and listened and listened and listened for any sign that Jack had woken up. When you caught another puff of steady air, you pushed in the small lock carefully. Not daring to turn on the light, you powered on your phone and Googled âOne Wish Willow Customer Serviceâ and clicked the first number that showed up.Â
Your phone rang quietly three times before a bored voice filled your ear. âHello.âÂ
âI need to cancel a wish . . . please,â you pleaded in a whisper.Â
âIâm sorry, we donât really do that.âÂ
Your stomach dropped, and the room tilted. âPlease; you have to do something. I need my wish to go away.â Your mouth pooled with bile-tasting saliva.Â
âIf you had read the back of the box, you would see that wishes canât be canceled or altered. Itâs all in the fine print.âÂ
A whimper slipped through your lips. âHe killed people, donât you understand? And Iâm scared heâll kill me eventually.âÂ
Static crackled from the speaker before the guy on the other line sighed heavily. âThe only way a wish can go away is if the wisher or the wished-upon passes. Sorry, but I canât do anything else for you.âÂ
The call ended, and all you were left to do was stare at your phone.Â
A flash of pills or your razor against your wrists crossed your mind briefly, but that meant Jack would still be in your world. And there was no telling what heâd do if you died. You could practically envision the city drenched in red and violence. But not doing something wasnât an option. You couldnât force yourself to go back into the room, get back into bed, and sleep like your world was perfect.Â
Your guilt wouldnât silence enough for that.Â
With a tight chest, you called a second number and waited.Â
It wasnât long before you heard the sirens wail down your street, and you pressed your back against the door. By now, you were certain Jack was either close to waking up or he was now fully awake. You didnât know which terrified you more.Â
âSweetheart?â Jack called out, and your lungs seized. âWhereâd you go, baby?â His tone was soft and gentle for now.Â
You wondered if the blue and red flashing lights poured through your blinds and illuminated his enraged face. Besides the sirens, your bedroom and bathroom were silent. On the other side of the door, Jack made no movements that caused any sound. It was as if he had disappeared, giving you an opportunity to think about opening the door. The golden knob felt cool against your palm andâÂ
BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM!Â
You squealed loudly in terror and backed away immediately from the door only stopping when the backs of your legs hit the side of the tub.Â
âWhat did you do, sweetheart?â Jackâs loud voice carried through the door in a hollow manner. âY/nnnnnn,â he drew out your name. âWHAT DID YOU FUCKING DO?âÂ
Downstairs, another blam! sounded and was followed by many footsteps and cries of Police! and Weâre coming up!Â
A glimmer of hope raced through your chest, however panic engulfed it when Jack began rattling the door so hard you feared heâd take it off its hinges.Â
âYou think youâre so smart? You think the boys in blue will keep me away from you?â Jack screamed through a raw throat. âYouâre so dead wrong, baby. Iâll never be apart from you. Youâre mine for the rest of your life. IââÂ
His voice cut off from the slam of your bedroom door. Following, grunts, the Miranda rights, and the sound of struggle echoed into the bathroom. You attempted to block it out with both hands on your ears, but Jack was too loud, too impossible to suppress. All went quiet a few moments later until his empty laugh began to stutter out in broken barks.Â
You were going to be sick.Â
âWe arenât over, sweetheart!â he continued, though his voice was waning. âIâll find you again soon enough! Weâre going to be together until the end of time! WeââÂ
âMaâam, itâs safe to come out,â another maleâs voice covered the rest of Jackâs taunts.Â
You ripped the door open and a sob of relief sputtered from your lips. You stepped back through the smeared bloodâa result of Jackâs struggleâand sat back down on your bed. Your spine bent as you hunched forward in an attempt of self-comfort. You gripped your arms with white knuckles, and the bruises Jack left behind didnât even compute through your twisted emotions.Â
One of the officers stepped close to your knees. âI know this has been very traumatic for you, but when youâre ready, weâll need to take you down to the station to get your statement.âÂ
You nodded wordlessly.Â
Two officers stood in the corner where Jack dripped the most blood while he stood watching you.Â
âWhat the fuck happened in here,â one of them whispered, but without much other conversation, you heard him clear as day.Â
âI wish I knew, man,â the other responded.Â
Your soul tensed at his wording and the way he tossed it out so casually. Because youâd wished for something you thought to be so trivial, and now look at where it got you.Â
Alone and traumatized where youâll be looking over your shoulder for the rest of your life.Â
Amazing way to show your version of the wish it was terrifying and had me so anxious but so good!! Yk your writing is good if itâs able to invoke emotions like that. Truly an amazing read its joining my top fics list đź

Super early EARLY announcement because Iâm anxious and I canât wait to share this news with you
Well, itâs official: tba is going to become a real book. Iâve been working on it for a little while (not that long, but long enough for the anxiety to kick in hehe). Iâve received so so many messages from some of you saying youâd love for the story to be an actual book and well, now itâs GOING TO BE!!! AAAA
That means a lot of things. Iâll be changing some details, of course; the charactersâ names, for example, and the narration will switch to first person. Thereâs a lot (A LOT) of work ahead, and it probably wonât be ready for many many months. In the meantime, Iâll keep updating the fic until the very end of it.
In short, I don't know when this project will be ready, but itâs already in motion. And that makes me really REALLY happy.
So, hereâs a little sneak peek of what the book will be like <3

You first met Jaime Lannister during the Year of the False Spring, at the Great Tourney of Harrenhalâyou had only been ten years of age, still starry-eyed and gentle-of-tongue. Knights, lords, and ladies hailing from all over Westeros were buzzing about the opening feast. Chalices of golden ale, platters of fruit and cheese, and sizzling trays of freshly-roasted meats were splayed out over several long tables.
To your right was your eldest brother, Brandon, biting into a large turkey leg and gingerly offering you a piece when he caught you ogling him. To your left was your sister Lyanna, popping voluminous grapes into her mouth and chattering to your two other brothers, Benjen and Ned, across the table. Her grey eyes were alight with glee, and she tipped her head back to laugh when Benjen made a snarky comment about Nedâs overgrown hair.
You were well into your second serving of glazed lemon cakes when the crown Prince, Rhaegar Targaryen, stood up front. A hush descended upon the crowd when the handsome, silver-haired man brandished a large, golden harp.

A/N:Â not very proud of this eee
It was a stupid thing really, a decision you didnât think thoroughly about. Fighting Steve while battling your feelings for him wasnât an ideal combination.
Feet in the pool cooling off the summer heat, while talking about the last events of the Scarring Spring the gang endured, and how you felt about it. This little routine started after the events of the Demodogs and Mindflayer.Â
Little did you know that was the start of your inevitable falling for King Steve.
You slept over at his house, too scared to be alone in your solitude, flinching at the slightest of sounds. You considered just toughing it out but settled on the conclusion that honestly maybe he shouldn't be alone either. So you picked your trembling body and drove over to him. And as expected your reasoning was right, Steve was awake and in the same frightened state you were in.
Ever since that night you and Steve were practically inseparable; stuck side by side by a string. You babysat together, helped him land his job at the mall, comforted him through the tearful days of his parentsâ mistreatment, and all the more. And in exchange he was present for your cheerful and irritated moments.Â
Being friends with Steve was easy; Mathematicians would contrast its simplicity with how quickly the entire multiplication table could be solved. Astronomers would compare it to the facile discovery of Polaris, while doctors would contrast the basic comparison akin to finding a beating heart.
Loving him however, was miserable. Poets would weep at just a glance at your tragic love story, and kids would be confused: why isnât the story lining up the way itâs supposed to? With every date he goes on, your heart breaks. With every glance at another girl, your stance falters. But Steve was your friend, and you stick by your friends, even if you are in love with them. Even if they subconsciously hurt you.Â
But this time was different. Very different. A kind of different that clawed your heart out and had him spit on it.Â
âI think Iâm still in love with Nancy.âÂ
Suddenly, your head goes quiet.
âWhat?â Narrowed eyes looking at him from your side of the pool.Â
âMaybe I never stopped,â Steve's eyes were trained on the waving water below.Â
How could he be so nonchalant? Like he isnât stabbing his nailed bat into you repeatedly.
âI mean she mentioned her relationship with Jonathan isnât at itâs best so maybe-âÂ
After helping him move on, after your endless amount of advice, he still loved her? She broke his heart and he still loves her?Â
You ignore your own hypocrisy.
The scowl on your face deepend with each decibel that spilled out of his mouth.Â
âWhat?â the sound of your voice seemingly going down an octave.
Steveâs head whips towards your hostility. Heâs seen you angry and itâs not a pretty sight, most people apologize before you start barking. But heâs never been on the receiving end, and this has him confused, and frankly a little scared.
âWell, we were talking in that little trailer we stole a-and we were flirting and I think she-â Voice almost brittle, Steve flies through the words.Â
Why is he so adamant on explaining his reasoning to you? He feels his nerves spiking, and skin trembling, itâs probably the heat, yeah, the heat-
âShe broke your heart -and maybe Jonathanâs now- and you're drooling over what? Being a second choice?â You bark, white knuckles gripping the coping.Â
You know you're being cruel, you know you should stop, but, this is the first time since meeting Steve that you feel superior. The power of knowing you can control how this goes. No more flustered and smiley you, heâs added enough oil to the flame, and you feel yourself blazing; you're done chasing a lost cause.
Steve scoffs indecorously, as he pushes his ever perfect hair away from his face.Â
âAh- what? Second choice? Do you really think so lowly of her? Of me?â
âNo! I think all of us are scared and broken people but, that does not mean she gets to treat you like crap -and you to her- and then waltz in and fucking hint at a flirt!â
Suddenly you felt every prick of gravel on your skin. You feel every atom swaying in the water by your feet. You were tired and yelling. It wasn't helping that the humid air was making you dizzy.Â
âHer and Jonathan are basically broken up! I donât know why this is such a big deal! I thought you would be happy for me?â He looks at you with furrowed eyebrows.Â
Both your voices are at equal volume now but thereâs a difference in tone. His is pained and confused. Why arenât you supporting him? Why arenât you excited?Â
Your voice is angry and tired. Tired from the waiting, the ignoring, the being thrown off to the side. And angry from ever thinking waiting was a good idea, and trusting that Steve would ever look at you as a potential love interest.Â
Thatâs not who you are or ever will be. And Steve will continue to be blinded by the countless beautiful girls that arenât you or ever will be.
âIâve been happy for you Steve -for fucks sake- Iâm always happy for you! Every damn date, every damn girl, every fucking time! And I supported you and helped you with every single one that caught your eye and Iâve been silent like an idiot through it all!âÂ
âI never asked you to help me, that was your choice!â
âCause thatâs what friends do Steve! They help the people they care about!â
âIf thatâs your logic why arenât you my friend now? You know how hurt I was by Nancy and how long I spent dissecting every single memory trying to see what I did wrong,â He takes a fast breath, âSo her coming back and asking for a second chance at us is good! So why donât you care now-â
âDonât you dare Steve, the reason weâre having this conversation right now is because I care!â
âYou have one hell of a way of showing it,â he murmured indecorously.Â
âA simple thank you would suffice you dick.â you all but growled at him.
âThis wouldnât even be a problem if you hadnât gone and blew up on me!â he retorted almost jokingly. The situation wasnât far from being a joke. You and Steve the bright stars starring in the circus called your love life.
You sat silent at that. Everything is crumbling; the love, the patience, the longing. All gone and vanished. Is this who youâve been hoping for? Wishing and praying to every shooting star. Someone who takes takes takes and never gives? Have you really been this blind? Do rose-colored glasses really sabotage you this hard?
âI dropped everything for you Steve. Everything. To help you, to ease your pain -god I always drove to your house at the crack ass of dawn the second you call. So donât sit there acting like I couldnât -that I donât- give a shit about you.â
You werenât done.
âHow stupid was I to let you walk all over me and think that in the end you would see why I did everything for you.â You breathe in sharply before continuing, âSteveâŚâ You clench your hands into tight fists and try to calm the wobble in your voice.
âI donât think I can be here for you anymore, not like this,â
Now itâs Steveâs turn to sit quiet, not knowing how to answer. He inhales deeply as he ponders where to take this argument. He stares at you and notices your bloodshot eyes and the painful bite of your lips; You were trying not to cry. You hate when people watch you cry. All Steve wants to do is bundle you up and apologize for acting so stupid. He knew sugaring up with Nancy was a bad idea; He knew you would oppose it and fight for his happiness but Steve liked it easy. Scared of anything that has him weird and tingly, stuttering over his words. He hated it.
He pulls his gaze away from you and wonders: Why were the two of you arguing? Why are you so mad about him getting back with Nancy? Were you scared for Jonathan? The both of you have always been close friends. Hanging out during high school, working together, teaming up together when Hawkinâs turns upside down.Â
Heâs so confused itâs starting to give him a headache. How does one save his ass from a receptive friend's fury? He knows you. From the little and sacred time, heâs gotten the pleasure to truly see you. Youâre so considerate and lovely; Always checking up on people, making sure you're the first to go down a scary path, throwing yourself in harm's way to protect the kids, and always making sure everyone gets treated before you. He doesnât want to lose you, but the look on your face is tired. So tired that heâs scared that maybe heâs just noticed it now. How long have you been bottling everything up?
He says your name softly before continuing, âWhatâŚwhat do you mean by that?â
Itâs quiet, so quiet you second guess if you actually heard it. But you did. You always do when it comes to him.
âOpen your eyes Steve.âÂ
You finally look at him. With all your exhausted glory. You finally let him see what heâs created: sad, neglected, and unloved you. You need to get out of here before you do -or say- something more stupid; Something that could ultimately ruin what little left of your crumbling friendship with him.
With that you get up and gather your things, walking out of Steveâs home. Heâs still sat silent, as his head glistens from the waterâs beam gliding across his contemplating face. He hasnât made a move or sound of protest at your departure and you hope it stays that way. You need to get away, far away from whatever you messed up here.Â
You close the door to his home not sparing him a second glance. And he doesnât try to stop you.

âHow about these, dear? Eucalyptus pairs lovely with peonies. Besides, wildflowers for a wedding? In all my years as a planner Iâve never seen it. No one does it. It's just tacky, hon.â
Twirling the stem of a daisy between your fingers you bit the inside of your cheek, only half hearing the woman standing next to you among all the buckets and vases of flowers in the greenhouse.
Wildflowers for a wedding? No one does it.
Pulling your eyes off the daisy you forced a smile, âOf course, Iâm sorry. Peonies sound great.â
âWonderful, Iâll add it to the day-of agenda and make sure the florist knows youâve made up your mind. Itâs an excellent choice, one your fiance will be happy with Iâm sure.â
Your fiance.
Sam proposed less than a month ago in the kitchen of your little downtown Indianapolis apartment with his grandmotherâs ring. A huge, gaudy diamond that made your hands look even smaller than they already were and after youâd called your mom the news had spread like wildfire.
Sam didnât want to wait, he probably wouldâve dragged you down to the courthouse if it hadnât been for his parents and your mom, but it meant things were moving at the speed of light and you were running to catch up.
When heâd looked up at you, ring box outstretched, you knew what your first thought shouldâve been. Tears and overwhelming joy and a resounding Yes! but none of it came. Instead your first thought had been long stalks of grass. The glittering turquoise water of the quarry. Skunky weed and wildflowers and hot, sticky Indiana summers.
Steve.
âBabe, you gotta call the bakery back, the lady doesnât get it. Idiot,â Samâs voice cut through into your thoughts and you blinked them away.
âWhat?â
âThe cake? Sheâs not getting it. I told her we wanted vanilla, like actual vanilla not that imitation shit.â
âJulieâs not an idiot,â your tone grew clipped, short, brow furrowing as you folded your arms across your chest. Julie had lived in Hawkins since before your family moved in across the street from her. The only, and best, bakery in town with the sweetest baker known to man. Julie was a saint.
âOkay, well then you try and explain it to her. Iâm done,â Sam huffed, pinching his nose between his fingers and shaking his head. âIâm gonna go get food with my mom. Canât wait until this is all over,â he grumbled under his breath. âIâll see you back at the house," and with that he hastily pressed a kiss to your forehead before stalking out of the greenhouse.
âNot really a manâs arena is it,â the planner said giving you an overly sweet smile, âBetter to let us take care of it, hm?â
âI guess,â you couldnât bear to force another smile, âThanks for your help, but I need to go get ready for tonight. Call me if anything else comes up.â
âOn it and donât you worry, only a few more days. Just think! The happiest day of your life!â
The happiest day of your life.
It sure as hell didnât didnât it feel like it.
The high vaulted ceilings in your parentsâ living room looked the same as they had when you lived there. Same ugly, bumpy texture and yellowed color, now with a few too-high cobwebs just out of reach hanging in the corners.
The buzz of conversation filling the air around you was incessant, blending and blurring together and making you feel like you were far away. Like you were a spectator and not the bride-to-be and your chest squeezed with nerves. There were so many people packed into the house and as guests hurled their questions at you, your anxiety only grew.
âOh, sweetie you look amazing! Youâll be a beautiful bride!â
âTell me again, where are you going for your honeymoon?â
âSam is such a catch, does he have any available friends? Just kidding! But seriously?â
âOh my god, look at that ring! He must really love you.â
One of Samâs cousins had been hammering you with question after question, barely giving you any room to reply and you felt like you were drowning in it. The walls of the living room suddenly felt like they were closing in on you, making you feel claustrophobic and you needed air. Outside. Anything other than this. âIs-is it warm in here?â you stuttered, pulling at the collar of your dress.
âNo? What dâyou meanââ
âIâm sorry, excuse me,â you didnât wait for her to finish and instead moved as quickly as you could through the crowd, trying not to project your panic with a fake smile plastered on your lips until you reached the slider door.
âHoney!â your stomach sank. Your mom. âYour aunt and uncle just got here, you need to say hello!â
Looking over your shoulder she was standing with her hands on her hips, brow furrowed in frustration, watching as your fingers gripped the handle of the patio door.
âI know,â your voice was edged with irritation and you bit your tongue. âPlease? I just need some air for a minute. Iâll be right back,â and you could tell she didnât like your answer, but she didnât fight you on it as you slipped outside, all the noise and voices and music blunted and sliced in half as you shut the door behind you.
Leaning back against the glass, eyes closed, you pulled in a breath of air and let it out slowly. Trying, telling, yourself you had to keep it together. Just a minute out here and youâd feel right as rain. Ready to dive back in.
The happiest day of your life.
âShouldnât you be inside?â
Your eyes flew open, an all-too-familiar voice making your heart leap into your throat.
He was sitting on the edge of one of the pool loungers like it was nothing, a few locks of stray hair falling into his eyes, all warm honey and burnt caramel and the boyish grin he was giving you made you feel dizzy. Like it always did.
âIâve been inside for like two hours,â you shot back, but you couldnât ever bring yourself to really sound mad at him.
At Steve.
âWell don't sound like youâre having too much fun. Not like youâre getting married in three days or anything,â he teased, scooting over on the lounger, a silent invitation for you to sit next to him and you took it.
âDonât remind meââ fell out, ââwhat I mean isâit's justâjust planning everything has been...a lot.â
Steve caught your slip up, but didnât call it out, only humming in reply as he threaded a hand through his hair, watching as you settled down next to him. âIâm about a month late, but congrats,â he offered with a small smile before taking a drink from his beer.
âOh, yeah. Thanks,â you replied lamely, cheeks flushing when he looked over at you. You were entirely too sober for this. âHere, gimme that,â reaching over you took the beer from his hand, chugging half of it in one go and pulling a laugh out of Steve.
âJesus,â Steve laughed, amused at you, a sound youâd missed so very much. âTake it easy,â he chided gently, but it was all warm and sticky sweet like popsicles on a hot day and when you gave it back he shook his head.
Silence lingered between you for a moment, the static sound of the pool filter trickling in the background, and your thoughts drifted back to a moment a few years ago. Up in your room while summer spun by outside. The last time he'd been over here. Steve.
Bobbing along to the music coming from your stereo, you crammed the last of your photos into one of the empty supply boxes Steve had brought over from Family Video.
âI wanted to be with you alone and talk about the weather, but traditions I can trace against the child in your face won't escape my attention,â you sang a little off key, giving your shoulders a little shimmy as you turned to grab the pile of books on your bed.
âYou keep your distance via the system of touch and gentle persuasion. I'm lost in admiration, could I need you this much?â Steve sang back, browed knitted together in dedication to the bit, hips swaying as he wiped down your dresser. Turning with the roll of paper towels in his hand he held it out to you as the chorus neared, both of you singing horribly.
âOh, you're wasting my time, you're just, just, just wasting time!â
âGod, whoâs gonna sing shitty with me when youâre not around?â Steve tossed the roll onto your bed, leaning back against the drawers behind him.
âRobin sucks more than I do,â you shot back, and Steve mumbled in agreement.
âYeah, but she hates Tears for Fears,â there was a slight whine in his voice that made you look up at him over your box and grin.
âWell then save it for me when Iâm back on Christmas break.â
Steve gave you a pout and folded his arms over his chest, âThatâs like, a fucking eon from now.â
âItâs not that long,â you moved around the other side of your bed to sit in front of him, a small pause swallowing you both into silence.
Clearing your throat you dropped your gaze down your shoes, kicking them in time with the song still playing in the background. You glanced over at Steveâs dirty, beat up Blazers and smiled. âI guess Iâll miss you,â you teased, looking back up at him and he gave you a smile, but it softened the longer he looked at you.
âI know Iâll miss you,â he said, and you knew he meant it, and your heart fluttered in your chest like a bird caught in a cage as the air around you grew thick with words unsaid, but implied. Steve took a step away from the dresser, standing in the V of your legs, hand moving to lift your chin up with his thumb and forefinger.
You bit your bottom lip between your teeth, meeting his gaze, and everything felt hazy. âMiss you too, Stevie,â you murmured and he leaned down slowly. Tilting your chin ever so gently he hesitated for just a second before pressing his lips against yours. Your room and half-packed boxes and everything fell away in the warm, glittering feeling of Steve and summer and the last of the light falling through your window washed you both in gold like it wanted to hold you in that moment forever.
âHow long are you in town for?â your voice broke the silence between you and Steve took another drink of his beer.
âJust til the day after the wedding, need to get back to things,â he said softly, stealing a look at you out of the corner of his eye, smiling at the way your nose scrunched up when you were thinking, âYou look really pretty by the way.â
Your cheeks warmed and you stole a look at him too, âYou have to say that.â
âNo I donât. I do on your wedding day, but this is a freebie,â he teased, trying to make it seem lighter than it was, but you both knew the weight it carried.
âBabe, câmon. You gotta get back inside. Itâs rude. People are looking for you,â the sudden sound of Samâs voice sliced your moment in two and Steve sat up straight, leaning away from you as he rubbed the back of his neck.
âAlright, I just needed some air,â your voice sounded tired and Steve caught the look in your eyes as you roughed your hands over your face, âIâm coming.â
âHarrington,â Sam sniped, and Steve gave him a big smile, knowing just how much the other man hated finding the two of you sitting together.
âSammy,â Steve teased and you had to bite back a laugh, hiding it in a cough, but Sam knew.
âI fuckinâ hate that,â Sam gave Steve a look and he just smiled.
âI think itâs cute,â you chimed in, but knew you shouldâve kept it to yourself when Sam glared daggers at you.
âInside,â he said, patience short, and you felt your own run out as you glared right back, but moved toward the slider door anyway.
âIâll see you,â you told Steve and just before you slipped back into the chaos, he gave you a look. The same one you remembered from that hot summer evening in your room as you packed your life into boxes. A look that put fire to the embers lying dormant in your chest and something you thought had been extinguished flickered back to life.
âSam, hurry up, weâre going to be late!â
âIâm trying. You know how much I hate being outside. These stupid boots are too tight andââ Sam grunted, leaning over to tug at his socks, ââthese are itchy as hell.â
âYou donât have to wear them, but your legs are gonna get bit up and scratched on the trail,â you shook your head, yanking your own worn-in boots onto your feet.
âBit? Are you kidding me?â
âWhat? Itâs summer, there are a ton of bugs out right now.â
Sam sucked in a breath and put his face in his hands, standing on the other side of the bed from you. Heâd agreed to it at first, thought maybe it might be a quaint little jaunt through a park, but when he realized it was an actual hike up the bluff just outside Hawkins â in nature â heâd thrown a fit.
It was one of your favorite places, a special piece of home, and you were going to go with or without him.
âJust stay home, Sam. Itâs fine,â you huffed, kicking your suitcase shut, tugging your ponytail through the back of your baseball cap.
âYou know what? Maybe I will. This whole place is too much. Jasonâll get beers with me,â he growled under his breath, yanking his boots off to get to his socks, âEnjoy your hike.â
âGreat, thanks, will do,â you almost left the room without saying goodbye, but something made you hesitate and you paused for a second at the door, eyes squeezed shut. Why was everything so damn hard? This was supposed to be easy.
The happiest day of your life.
Resigned, you turned around and retraced the few steps over to Sam. âIâll see you when weâre back,â you muttered, bending down and brushing a hasty kiss to his cheek.
âSee you,â he didnât meet your gaze, instead scowling at the ground and it was the push you needed to leave, the weight on your shoulders lifting as you hurried down the stairs and out the door.
The sun was just coming up, painting the sky cotton candy pinks and blurred warm tangerines. You could feel the heat already and as you got out of your car at the bluff the feeling of the sun on your bare legs pulled a heavy sigh from your lungs. Breathing out the stress and pressure of the last few days and you closed your eyes for a minute, leaning against the warmth of your car.
It would be okay. Today was for you. This was for you.
Opening them again you heard another car rumbling up the dirt road behind you and when you turned around you grinned so big your cheeks started to hurt.
âOH MY GOD,â Robin squealed. She practically leapt out of the backseat of Steveâs BMW and ran over to you, gathering you up in her arms and squeezing tight. âWhat the hell! You look amazing! Shit. Is this like, pre-wedding glow or did you stop eating meat or something? I hear itâs like, totally bad for your skin.â
âRobin,â Steve shook his head as he shut his car door before walking around to get Robinâs too.
âWhat? All legitimate questions! Right, Eds?â she shot back.
âI mean, not the first thing Iâd ask,â Eddie replied with a grin, but you could hear the softness of him behind it.
âAlright, well I wouldnât expect you to know anyway. Weddings are like a foreign language to you plebs,â Robin said simply, clicking her fanny pack around her waist.
âHey, thatâs not fair, I know enough,â Steve chimed in, propping a hand on his hip and giving Robin a look.
âChildren, not about us today!â Eddie chided, following after Robin and gathering you up into one of his bear hugs. âHi, sweetheart,â he held you out at armâs length and gave you a warm Eddie smile.
âHi,â you grinned back, the happiest youâd been in days just listening to the comforting sound of your friends bickering, âMissed you.â
âMmm, you too,â Eddie hummed, shooting a quick glance over at Steve. âSome of us more than others,â he said a bit quieter, bringing his eyes back to you and you felt your cheeks flush.
âOkay, hike?â you deflected, then accusingly looked back at Eddie, âYouâre not still smoking are you?â
âOnly on Wednesdays,â he flipped back casually, but you knew he was full of shit.
âMunson, youâre a horrible liar,â Steve drawled, rolling his eyes, starting the walk to the edge of the bluff. âNance and Jonathan are already at the top,â he said over his shoulder, âJonathan wanted to get a time lapse of the sunrise.â
âOh, sick,â Eddie clapped his hands, âI gotta see it. Câmon, Buckley get with it.â He waved an arm forward, pulling Robin into a jog and you shook your head with a soft laugh as you caught up with Steve. Starting up the bluff two by two.
The sounds of everything coming to life swirled around the four of you as you walked. The buzz of the insects, birds chirping their morning songs and tractors rumbling to life in the fields alongside the bluff.
Home.
âGod, the last time we were up here was so Dustin could talk to Suzie,â Steve half-laughed, Eddie and Robin walking just ahead of you. You grinned at the memory.
âOh no,â you shook your head, âThey might be worse than we are at singing.â
âDidnât think it was possible to be honest,â he teased gently, smiling over at you, looking for a long moment before dropping his gaze back down to his feet.
You could feel his eyes on you and the warmth of it filled you up and spilled over at the edges, making you happier than youâd been in a long time and a tiny pinch of guilt squeezed in your chest.
âThanks for getting up so early,â you exhaled, breaths getting heavier as the incline of the bluff steepened, Steve pulling in a breath next to you.
âOh, I donât think Iâve slept in since high school,â he waved you off, âManaging a storeâs got me up ass early every day. Besides, wouldnât miss it.â Arms swinging at your sides, his fingers brushed against yours as you walked and the embers in your chest glowed bright.
âYeah,â you sighed, wishing that for once Sam had come along. That heâd put even a little bit of effort into your interests. That heâd care even a fraction of what Steve cared and the embers flickered again with your frustration.
âYou two are slow as hell!â Eddie teased and when you looked up you saw he and Robin had been moving much faster than you and Steve. âIâm smoking a victory cigarette at the top!â he yelled and Robin smacked him, both of them dissolving into laughter.
âCâmon, that asshole doesnât need another cigarette,â Steveâs brow furrowed in frustration and he picked up the pace, pulling you along with him as he lengthened his stride.
Jonathan and Nancy were waiting for the four of you at the top and, much to Eddieâs dismay, Robin beat him by a couple of feet, stealing his cigarettes and jamming them into her fanny pack as punishment.
Jonathan had asked Nancy to marry him two years ago now, Christmas eve under the tree at the farm and theyâd eloped that spring there on top of the bluff. It had been a small, but sweet ceremony, with only family and close friends. Perfectly Nance and Jonathan and as you thought back on it your stomach twisted with a longing feeling.
As you sat scattered among the long grass in pairs â Eddie and Robin, Nancy and Jonathan, you and Steve â a breeze picked up and blew through the wildflowers around you, taking then with it and you watched as the buttercups danced in the wind.
You wanted wildflowers. Not peonies and eucalyptus.
âHey, whereâd you go?â Steveâs voice pulled you out of your thoughts and you looked over at him, sat close enough to you in the grass that you could see all the little moles and freckles that dotted down the line of his jaw, his neck, the exposed skin along the top of his shirt.
âFlowers,â fell out and you didnât shy away from him, meeting his gaze.
âFlowers?â he asked, brow knitting together in confusion.
âStupid flowers. And cake. And nature and socks andââ
âWhoa, whoa, whoa. Slow down. What are you talking about?â Steve scooted closer to you, your legs pressing together as you sat facing each other and he put a hand on your knee.
Your throat tightened and you felt tears pricking at the corners of your eyes, but you willed them away. Not here. You didnât mean it.
âHey,â he said softer, hand lifting from your knee to press into yours and you blinked hastily, pulling in a breath to steady yourself.
âI donât know,â you started, closing your eyes for a minute, trying to ground yourself. âI justâI thought this would be easier. Weâre supposed to be in love and planning this should be fun, but it sucks and heââ catching yourself you looked back up at Steve and felt him squeeze your hand. âIâm sorry, itâs just stress. I shouldnâtââ
âYou donât have to apologize,â Steve said, thumb brushing over the bump of your knuckles, soft and warm and reassuring.
He was looking at you again like he had at the welcome party, like you were the only thing that existed in that moment and you felt yourself moving closer, your legs hovering over his with the lack of space.
âI wish Sam would look at me like that,â you whispered and Steveâs lips parted in surprise, anticipation grabbing hold of both of you as the wind picked up again.
âHeâs an idiot if he doesnât,â Steve whispered back, leaning closer still and you could feel his breath as it warmed over your cheek. The scent of his shampoo and spearmint gum and cedar and wildflowers flooding your brain and making everything feel hazy. His eyes all bright amber and flecks of gold in the sun. Closer and closer and closer andâ
âHarrington! You left the food in the car!â
Leaning back from each other you felt the tension shatter with the bark of Eddieâs voice and you leapt to your feet.
âGod, what a dingus,â Robin grumbled, âNow we gotta go back down.â
âHey,â Steve scrambled to his feet ignoring them, grabbing your hand in his, âAre you okay?â
âYeah, yeah Iâm fine. I justâI forgot I have to meet with the baker today about the cake this morning.â
âOh,â Steveâs expression was edged with concern and he let your hand drop as the others started moving to the top of the trail.
âRehearsal dinner is tonight right?â Robin asked offhandedly, grabbing a piece of licorice from her fanny pack.
âYou have licorice in there and didnât offer me any?â Eddie accused.
âYeah, tonight at seven at Hop and Joyceâs farm,â you said, trying to sound casual, but the warm feeling of Steve was still holding you tightly.
âOpen bar?â Eddie grinned.
âOh my god, Munson. Shut up,â Robin chided, shoving him as they all wandered down the path in a line, you and Steve bringing up the rear.
âCourse itâs open bar,â you tried to laugh, but it fell short, everything feeling like it was crumbling now.
The breeze picked up, swirling around your feet, carrying spearmint and Steveâs shampoo and boy with it and as you watched the bachelor buttons sway with the wind you felt a thought gnawing at the back of your mind.
What if.
There was still time.
Nothingâs permanent.
People change their minds all the time andâŚ
Come over here. All you've got is this moment, twenty-first century's yesterday. You can care all you want, everybody does, yeah, that's okay.
âChug, chug, chug!â
âDonât be a pussy, Jason!â
âNo way, heâs too old!â
It felt like you were back in high school throwing a rager over at Tina Rochesterâs house not having drinks after your rehearsal dinner, but after most of the âadultsâ had all gone home things got carried away.
Hop and Joyceâs farm was far enough outside of town that the noise wouldnât bother anyone and thank god because it was loud. Maybe open bar hadnât been the best idea, but Sam was having a great time, smiling and laughing for once and you didnât fight it. You were having fun too.
âOhhh! He did it!!â âGet that man a medal!â
Jason Carver, Samâs best man, crushed his empty beer can under his foot to whoops and hollers. You werenât sure who started it, but someone had told someone else they could shotgun a beer faster and it spiraled from there. Sam was in his element, partying alongside the other ex-basketball players, and for a minute you felt like maybe things would be okay.
Gathering you up in his arms, Sam spun you in a circle, pressing his lips messy and drunk against your cheek. âGod, babe. Should be illegal to look that good,â he slurred into your ear, arms still holding you tight as he lowered you slowly back to the ground.
A grin tugged at the corners of your lips. âGonna write me a ticket?â you teased and he reached a hand around to grab at your ass.
âMaybe I will,â he breathed and you felt a shiver run down your spine, but then a voice pulled him away.
âSam? Oh my god!â
Carol and Tommy. Great.
âCarol?? I didnât think yâall were getting here til tomorrow! Tommy, you look like shit,â Sam barked a laugh and lunged at his old friend, grabbing him around the waist and pushing him across the patio.
âFuck off, youâre one to talk,â Tommy growled back, digging his hands into Samâs ribs and both of them fell back into their old selves. Talking about a couple of friends that had gone pro, work, what married life was like for Tommy and Carol.
âBabe, go get me another beer, huh?â Sam said over his shoulder and you rolled your eyes, but giving Carol a quick hug you made your way over to the keg.
Priming the tap you started to pour beer into a cup, but it sputtered and choked before spilling foam and you frowned. âPiece of shit,â kicking the keg you shook the garbage can it was sitting in and tried again, but this time nothing came out.
âNeed a hand?â
Eyes still on the keg you sighed, a smile pulling at the corners of your lips as you dumped the foam in your cup onto the ground. âTapped already,â you grumbled, turning around to see Steve grinning at you, hands jammed in his pockets, tie loose and hanging around his neck and you swore he was the most handsome human being youâd ever laid eyes on.
âHmm, I donât think so,â he took the last few steps toward you and primed the tap again, giving the keg one firm shake, and grabbed the cup from you. Foam started coming out and you jammed your tongue into your cheek.
âHa! Told youââ
But then the foam turned into cold, amber beer, and you clamped your mouth shut.
âYou were saying?â Steve teased and you shoved him, spilling some of the beer that heâd just poured into your cup on the ground. âHey! Youâre a menace,â he chided softly, shouldering you back, but grabbing the spout again he filled the cup once more and handed it back to you.
âThanks,â you muttered, glancing over at him as you took a sip.
âSam seems to be having a good time,â he commented, finding a cup of his own and filling it.
âYeah, right back to high school.â You watched as your fiance, Tommy, and Jason all snickered and laughed at each other, talking about âthe good oldâ days, and your smile fell.
You couldnât remember the last time he laughed like that with you. When he was drinking he got more handsy, liked to keep you close to his side and brag about how you were about to get married, but nothing about how hard you worked or the fact that you were saving up to buy a place.
âI dunno,â Steve sighed, taking a drink of his beer, âI donât miss it.â
âMe either,â you agreed, glancing up at him, and your heart stopped.
God he was pretty. The string of lights that wound around the property washed him in a warm glow. Hair falling out of place as the night spun on, the line of his jaw cast in half light, dark and strong, the long sweep of his lashes as he blinked and looked down at you, the way his lips pulled up into that smile.
âWhat?â Steve asked, tone amused and playful and your eyes grew wide.
âWhat?â you echoed stupidly.
Steve laughed and gave you a lopsided smile. âYou tell me, youâre the one zoning out,â he teased and your cheeks flushed.
âOh, n-nothing,â you stumbled over your words and quickly filled the silence with another gulp of beer.
âOkay, well when it comes back to you lemme know.â His eyes lingered on yours for just a moment longer and then a look came over him. Like he remembered something. âOh, hey. Câmere a minute,â and then he was grabbing your hand and pulling you around the side of the barn.
As he pulled you into motion you felt just how buzzed you were and a giggle pushed itself through your lips. âWhat the hell are we doing?â you asked, Steve loosing a laugh of his own as he yanked you both to a stop a few yards away from the party out in the long grass of Hopâs field.
âThere,â he said pointing up and you followed the line of his arm into the sky until your eyes landed on it.
âOh,â you breathed, pulling your gaze back to Steve as he looked up into the inky black expanse of the Indiana night. He was just how you remembered him. Hair messed, all boyish and eyes full of wonder and curiosity, just like heâd been those years ago that night in his backyard while you floated in his pool.
âYeah, that one. Right there,â Steve swam closer to you, grabbing your arm, fingers folding yours in to make a point and tugging it up over your head.
Your breath hitched in your throat as his legs brushed against yours under the water and it took everything you had in you to pull your eyes from him to look up.
âSee it?â
âThat one?â you asked, pointing on your own, and he nodded as your eyes trailed up the line of your arm to land on an especially bright star.
âMmhm,â Steve murmured and all you wanted was to look at him again, so you did. âWhile youâre gone you can just look up at that at night and think of me,â he said matter-of-fact, giving you one of his lopsided grins.
âWhat if weâre not looking at the same time?â
âIâll always be looking,â Steveâs voice was barely above a whisper and the way he looked at you made you feel like you might melt. Blinking water from your lashes you lifted a hand to his cheek and at your touch his hands slipped along the bare skin of your waist, sliding down to your hips as he slowly pulled you into him.
The pool filter was humming heavy between the all crickets and frogs and lightning bugs, but you knew the thudding of your heartbeat was louder than all of it.
Wrapping your legs around Steveâs torso, you laced your fingers at the back of his neck, wanting him closer and tighter. Hair messed and flat against his forehead, his lips were parted as he breathed you in, water dripping off the end of his nose and eyes glittering in the pool lights, burnt caramel and honey and if he hadnât been holding onto you, you wouldâve floated away.
His fingers pressed into the soft skin at your hips and you sucked in a small gasp.
âSorry,â he whispered, and you shook your head in reply. Itâs okay. And then he gently pressed his thumb to the corner of your lips, swallowing against his nerves, and asked, âCan I kiss you?â
Heart racing, fingers still tangled at the back of his neck you whispered, âYes.â
âRemember when we found it?â
Steveâs question brought you hurtling back to the present and you shook your head, heart racing in your chest like it had that night in his pool. âOf course I remember,â you murmured, and you knew you were crossing a line, knew you shouldnât have done it, knew Sam was just around the other side of the barn, but something in you snapped. Shifted. Decided it didnât care and you took Steveâs hand in yours.
His eyes flicked down to where they were joined and then back up to you, âButââ
âWeâre friends,â you reasoned softly, âFriends hold hands.â
âAre we?â he asked and you swore you felt your heart crack as your fingers scrambled to tangle up with his.
âYeah. Yes. We are,â your words came spilling out, the beer spidering warm and hazy through your body as you tried to justify your action and Steveâs brows furrowed as he dropped his gaze.
âI should go,â he said and regret gripped you like a vice.
âDonât, please donât,â your tone was almost pleading, watching as Steveâs eyes fluttered shut for a moment, working through his own decision and you thought for a minute he would cave like he always did for you, but then his hand was untangling from yours and the ache in your chest was almost enough to pull tears from your eyes.
âYouâre getting married tomorrow,â he said, voice thick and low, and when he opened his eyes finally to look at you, you saw a thousand Iâm sorrys, all the regret and lingering kisses on hot summer nights and promises whispered in the dark and you shook your head.
âBut itâs notâwe canâtâplease stay,â nothing you said made sense and Steve ran a hand through his hair, pulling his lip between his teeth.
âGet some sleep. Iâll see you at the church.â
And as you watched his figure walk away, silhouetted and dark against the indigo sky, your star blinking bright above you, you felt tears finally well up and spill down your cheeks.
Sucking in a breath you turned back to the the wide open expanse of field behind you and buried your face in your hands, trying to calm down, willing the tears to stop, telling yourself that you loved Sam. You were getting married. The ring on your finger a constant reminder of what was supposed to happen tomorrow and when you finally lifted your head from your hands your eyes fell on a bright patch there in the field at your feet.
Wildflowers.
Walking back to the party felt like a blur, Steveâs words playing over and over in your mind, and when you came back into the glow of the strung up lights your eyes searched frantically for Sam. If you could just hold his hand, pull him in close youâd know you loved him. Would know you wanted to marry him, but he wasnât there and everything felt like it was unraveling.
âHey, are you okay?â Robinâs hand was at your elbow and when you looked up at her, her brow furrowed with worry. âWhoa, what happened?â
âI just need to find Sam, have you seen him?â
âYeah, yeah I think he was just over here, câmon. Are you sure youâre okay?â
âI just need Sam,â you choked out, Robinâs hand grabbing yours and pulling you along.
âOkay, weâll find him, itâll be okay.â
And as you rounded the corner into the quiet of the barn you heard hushed voices. Robin flicked on the overhead lighting to reveal Carol and Sam talking, huddled close to one another and your heart stopped in your chest.
âWhaâSam? Carol?â
Carolâs eyes went wide and she took a couple steps back, giving you one of her smiles, all flimsy and saccharine sweet. âOh my god, we thought you left!â she exclaimed, trying a laugh and you heard Robin mumble something under her breath next to you.
âWell, I didnât. Itâs my rehearsal dinner.â
âBabe, we were just trying to plan a surprise for you. For tomorrow, thatâs all,â Sam said, taking the few steps toward you, taking your hand in his, but you felt sick to your stomach. You knew that look in his eye, his tone of voice overcompensating for something, lying.
âYeah! Totally,â Carol said a little too enthusiastically and Robin had had enough.
âOh my god, totally great!â she mocked, throwing one of Carolâs empty smiles back at her before taking your hand. âItâs super late, Carol. Time to go,â this time Robinâs voice was void of all joking and the look she gave the other girl was enough to push her to leave.
âAbsolutely, sure thing. See you tomorrow! Canât wait,â she purred, but her smile faltered as she met your gaze, walking quickly back out into the night.
âBabe, we really were planning a surprise, IâI just want tomorrow to be perfect,â Sam took your hand from Robin, shouldering her out of the way and she scoffed, still lingering in case you needed her.
âIn here? In the dark?â your voice wobbled a bit as you realized what you were implying and Sam squeezed your hand, but it felt suffocating not warm or safe like Steve and you pulled it away. âIâm gonna go home, get some sleep.â
âOf course, baby. Whatever you need,â Sam crowded around you, rubbing your shoulders and pressing a kiss to the nape of your neck, but you didnât want any of it and shrugged him off.
âCan you give me a ride, Robs?â you asked, pulling away from Sam, your feet not moving you fast enough.
âYeah, yeah I can give you a ride,â Robin took your hand again, Sam finding himself alone in the wide expanse of the barn on the eve of your wedding.
The happiest day of your life.
âListen, can I tell you something?â Robin said shifting into park as she turned down the radio and idled in your parentsâ driveway.
âSure,â your voice was small, timid, not you as your thoughts still lingered on what Steve had said. What Sam and Carol had looked like huddled close together in Hopâs barn. Asking yourself why. Asking yourself what you really wanted.
âI donât think you should get married.â
Your head whipped up from your lap, brows knitted together. âWhat?â
âI donât think you should get married,â Robin said again voice softer this time, knowing the weight it carried as she let it settle in the car between you.
âItâs literally happening tomorrow. What dâyou mean donât get married,â you were scrambling now, afraid of what would happen if you let her woods take root, the doubt that had been hovering deep down now pushing itself front and center.
âPeople do it all the timeââ
âNo, they donât!â tears were welling up against your lashes, your face growing hot, willing yourself not to fall apart.
âOkay! Okay, Iâm sorry. Of course Iâm gonna support you no matter what you decide,â Robin quickly recovered, grabbing your hands in hers as her expression softened. âJustââ a small sigh escaped her and she squeezed your hand, ââI want you to be happy. Thatâs all. Are you happy?â
Are you happy?
Robin looked at you, eyes wide, hands still holding onto yours and you felt yourself wrestling with the three simple words sheâd thrown at you. Swallowing thickly, you couldnât meet her gaze and pulled your hands away, grabbing at the door handle.
âIâm happy, I am,â and even you knew how flimsy it sounded, but your friend didnât push you on it.
âOkay, okay. See you in the morning,â Robin said softly and all you could do was nod in reply before shutting the door and hurrying up the walk and into your parentsâ house.
You didnât bother showering as you moved quickly up the stairs to your room, not wanting to face your parents, not like this. Quietly shutting your door you felt the sob in your chest clawing its way up your throat and you tried to swallow it down as you threw back your covers and hid in the deep pile of blankets. You thought for a split second to call Sam over at Jasonâs, ask him if he really loved you, if he still wanted to go through with this, but you buried your face into your pillow and tried to push your thoughts away.
Doubt had started blooming in the pit of your stomach from the moment youâd said yes, but it had just felt like the next right thing. Felt like you were supposed to. Date your boyfriend for a couple of years, move in together, get married. Right? But the things you tried hard to ignore kept bubbling up.
Your hesitation when Sam first asked you out. Your trips home on breaks and seeing Steve. The feelings you wrestled with when you saw him. When he talked to you and listened, really listened and looked at you. How it felt like a giant weight being lifted from your shoulders without Sam there.
Your first fight with Sam over money. How he spent so much of it going out with his friends. How you knew they stayed out late and talked to other girls. The high he got from it too much to stop him from doing it. The smell of the other girls on his clothes.
The first time he cheated on you and begged you to take him back. How the first person you wanted to call was Steve, but you called Robin instead.
And now the planning. All the disagreements and arguing and fighting and you were exhausted and he couldnât even keep away from other women, from Carol, still after all that time.
Are you happy?
Robinâs question looped in your head and you knew the real answer.
No. But thenâŚ
Tap. Tap, tap tap.
Peeking your head out from under your covers your ears strained, trying to decide what it was youâd heard. Then it happened again.
Tap, tap. Tap.
There was only one thing that could make that sound, an all too familiar one that pulled forth a flood of precious, happy memories.
Rocks on your window.
Steve.
Crawling out of your bed you hurried to your window and yarded it open, sticking your head out and looking down like youâd done hundreds of times before. âSteve?â you hissed into the dark, and as the wind blew the clouds away from the moon, it shone down on the lawn below you washing Steve in soft light.
âCan I come up?â
You bit your bottom lip between your teeth, but knew there was no debate. âYeah, hurry up,â and you moved out of the way as he started climbing the gutter before youâd even said yes.
Stumbling in through the open window Steve straightened up and dusted off his old, faded Hawkins High Athletics shirt, a pair of grey sweatpants hanging on his hips, the same pair of dirty, beat up Blazers on his feet.
âHi,â he said awkwardly, tongue jammed into his cheek as he rubbed the back of his neck.
âHi?â it came out expectantly, a question, but you couldnât hide the relief in your voice at the sight of him standing there in your room.
âListen, I just wanted to say sorry. For earlier,â he said, walking to your bed and plopping down on the messed up covers.
âOh, thatâs okay, I shouldnât haveââ
âJust let me apologize,â he said shaking his head with a half laugh, expression mismatched as it twisted with something between regret and care.
So you listened and kept your mouth shut, instead deciding to settle down next to him on your bed, thighs pressed together on the small twin sized mattress. Silence lingered for a minute, but the air was heavy, loaded, like how it felt right before a thunderstorm. The sky holding its breath before opening up and pouring rain, cracking the sky in half with bright streaks of light.
You both stole a look at the same time and it pulled a smile from each of you, tiny breathy laughs falling from your lips, but when it quieted again the tension flooded back in.
âDo you love him?â Steve broke the quiet and you felt your chest tighten. When you hesitated he grabbed your hand in his. âDo you?â
Your pulse fluttered against your neck, your mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water and stumbling and choking on your words, but you knew the answer. You both did. Youâd just admitted it to yourself before Steve had fallen through your window and the familiar feeling of panic started to creep in around you, flinging you back to right before youâd left home again. Before you met Sam.
âSteve! Wait!â
You were practically running after him as he stalked back to his car, the sky on fire with the sunset and streaked in cherry reds, sunflower yellows, and bright tangerine.
He fumbled with his keys and dropped them into the grass at his feet, âShit.â
âPlease, just wait,â you were out of breath as you finally reached him and you saw his frame crumple as he loosed a sigh.
âJesus, what?â his tone was short, clipped as he stared through his car window, your reflection playing against the glass.
âItâs only for another year, itâs not like Iâm gonna be gone forââ
âYeah! Another year!â Steve spun around to face you, cheeks red and lips pulled down into a frown, a muddied mixture of sadness and anger swimming in his eyes. âJust admit it, you donât wanna come back here, and thatâs fine! But donât make me wait. Please donât make me wait anymore. Itââ Steve choked on his words and dropped his eyes to his feet, biting on the inside of his cheek to blunt the feelings swelling his chest. âIt hurts. To sit and wait here for you. Please,â his voice edged on pleading and you felt tears prick at the corners of your eyes.
âItâll work! Itâs just a little longerââ
Steve took a step into you, crowding over you, and you felt your heart stutter in your chest at the closeness of him. He lifted a hand to your cheek, his brows pulling together as he looked down at you, eyes searching yours. âThen be with me. If itâs not that long then be with me. Long distance for a little while until youâre done with school,â he said, voice barely above a whisper.
âSteve. I canâtââ your throat tightened around what you were about to say, scared of what that commitment looked like, scared to fuck it up between you, scared to lose your best friend, but your hesitation broke it anyway.
He dropped his hand away from your cheek, tongue flicking out to run along his lips as he held back his anger. His sadness. Frustration. Snatching his keys from the grass he unlocked the driver side door and flung it open rough.
âNo! Wait! I just meanââ
âNo!â he shouted into his car and then lowered his voice, tears streaming silently down his cheeks, âNo. No more. Good luck withâŚeverything.â And he piled into his car, slamming the door shut and ignoring your cries as you crowded against his window, asking him to stay. To talk about it. To figure things out, but he shifted it in drive and took off down your driveway and into the night.
You werenât going to fuck it up. Not again.
âNo,â and as your admission left your lips the heavy weight that had settled on your shoulders over the last two years started to melt away. âNo. I donât love him.â
Steveâs hold on you tightened, pressing your fingers into his palm and he lifted his free hand to your cheek, eyes searching yours, âDonât marry him.â
Donât marry him.
Your breath quickened and you pulled your bottom lip between your teeth, trying to reason out what youâd just decided and you felt anxious, but Steve was there. And your room was warm and safe. Just like it was when you were younger. When you both laughed and traded secrets and made promises to each other in the dark.
âBut. The wedding. The flowers, the cake, the guestsââ
âFuck âem,â Steve said, still holding onto your hand, and his words swirled around in your head. âItâs only a wedding. This is your life,â brushing the rough pad of his thumb across your cheek you closed your eyes and leaned into his touch, âYouâre not happy.â
And you werenât. Youâd had moments with Sam, moments in time where things felt right and like maybe it could be forever, but they were just that. Moments. It shouldnât be this hard. Youâd sacrificed, compromised, bent and twisted yourself to be what Sam wanted, what he needed, not what you wanted and when you finally looked up at Steve you felt tears welling up against your lashes.
âWhat will my mom say,â your voice wobbled as you tangled your fingers with Steveâs and he gave you a small, reassuring smile.
âShe wants you to be happy too. Sheâll be okay.â
You were dizzy, hazy with thoughts of not being engaged anymore, buzzing with the anticipation of what this decision meant. Of what it held. What the future could be and you looked back up at Steve, tears started to quietly spill down your cheeks and his hand was quick to gently wipe them away. You shook your head, holding your breath, and when you let it go everything came tumbling out.
âIâm sorry, Iâm sorry for making you wait. For hurting you. For everythingââ
âShh, itâs okay,â Steve softly chided, but you pressed on.
âNo, no itâs my turn,â you said, voice thick through your tears, and then you turned to cup Steveâs face in your hands. A small smile pulled up at the corners of your mouth even through your crying and you pulled in a breath, âI love you, Stevie. I always have.â
The look on his face then was one of pure adoration, of relief, and he gave you a smile back, âI know. I love you too.â
I love you too.
Pulling him into you, you felt the soft warmth of his breath across your cheek, the smell of his shampoo and fresh laundry flooding your senses. Hesitating, waiting for him to tell you it was okay and he silently answered you by leaning in and closing the gap between your lips, pressing his softly into yours.
It was slow and languid, a thousand I love yous. Years of want and aching set free into the dark of your room as you breathed each other in like air. The feeling of Steve scattering you out into the stars to live with the one youâd deemed as yours, falling between all the glittering constellations and floating in each other.
I love you too.
Reluctantly Steve pulled away from you, eyes fluttering open to look into yours and he took hold of your waist. âRun away with me,â he whispered.
Your brows pulled together, âRun away?â
âYeah. Right now. Throw your suitcase in my car and weâll just drive. Get away from everything, just for a little while until youâre ready.â
Mind racing, working through the logistics of what he was suggesting, you almost protested, but something in you fought back. Told you to listen to your heart, not your head. What did you want? What would make you happy?
âOkay.â
âReally?â Steveâs face lit up at your response, like he hadnât expected it, and you felt your lips pull up into a smile, tears drying on your cheeks as you let the feeling swallow you up in its warmth. The embers in your chest crackling and flickering with life, with a fire that burned only for him.
âYeah, yeah I donât care. I just want to be with you,â you felt yourself grow more and more confident, more decided and Steve pulled you in again to press another kiss to your lips. This time it was hotter, bolder, a confession of passion and you grinned into him.
âCâmon, if we go now we can get coffee at that shitty diner just off the highway outside of town,â he was grinning now too.
âThey make the best pancakes,â you laughed softly and Steveâs smile melted as he looked at you.
Finally.
He helped you gather your things, carrying your suitcase out to his car, and you felt like you could fly. Lighter than youâd been in years and the thought of just driving down the road with him filled you with warmth. Like watching the sun set at the end of a hot summer day. Like dipping your feet in the pool after sitting in the heat. Sweet like the taste that followed after a tart drink of lemonade.
You left your engagement ring on your dresser, a small folded note under it for Sam telling him sorry. Telling him you hoped he would find what he wanted. That you knew heâd be okay. And as you closed the door to your parentsâ house you felt like you were closing that chapter. Ready to start new. To free fall into this open-ended story with Steve and as you settled into his car your eyes caught a small patch of lawn on the side of your house. Bright and soft in the moonlight and full of color.
