Handling Trauma

Asra is charming, confident, and a master magician. He has seen the worlds and always carries wonderful trinkets in his pockets; dances and sings, and when he's around everything seems to glitter and shine.
That's why is so easy to forget how actually broken he is - the mere fact that he doesn't takes it out on the people around him like Lucio does doesn't mean he's ok - on the contrary, this only makes it worse.
He was a kid when his parents didn't came back home. Do you really believe that Lucio or his courtiers bothered to tell him? He didn't become an orphan in the spur of a fleeting moment - it was a slow, scary, crippling realization. Day after day he waited, he asked, he searched. Night after night he cried, he called, he begged - until he surrendered to the looming silence haunting his parents' bedroom.
He was found by you and your aunt, but by that time he was almost a young man already. So came the days when he looked up to you and slowly fell in love. He longed for your touch when he could see you, and waited to see you every time you were away.
He had found a new family, and soon he won your love.
And then, shortly after, the plague took everything from him - his family, his master, his love, his friends. His serenity, and his happiness.
He loved you, and he lost you. He broke the most sacred law of life to have you back, and spent three long years caring for you, weaving a spiderweb of lies to secure your safety.
It's so easy to forget how desperately afraid of loss Asra is, but thinking about it makes it crystal clear. And there's no way to forget it in your moments together, for when he's the most vulnerable, it shows.
Asra's eyes are hungry for your image. You've never seen him closing his eyes when you're together, as if you could disappear if he close his eyes. There's always a purple glimpse gazing behind his white lashes.
He gifted you a silk sleeping mask, embroidered with moon and stars, because there's always a candle, a lantern, a bonfire next to you when you sleep together. The candle went out on a moonless night, once. You woke in pain, Asra's arms clenching compulsively your body, as he gasped for air through the tears. You had to conjure a magic light on your fingertips, as if he'd forgot he was a magician as well, and spent the night kissing his face, caressing his shivering chest until dawn. Only then he managed to explain.
"I felt the darkness swallowing you".
The following night, yow went to Muriel's and came home with a mossy trunk covered in fairy helmets.
A bunch of glowing mushrooms is cute and helpful indeed, but is far from being a real solution. Asra keeps disappearing for days when he feels vulnerable, just to come back more frantic and confused than before. You can feel the grasp fear has on his soul in the way he holds your wrists tight as you're making love, you can hear it in his words as he asks you with the softest voice if you do still love him, begging you to never leave.
The awareness of his fears follows you even when you're not with him, written in the weals on your skin -on your wrists and hips. When he saw it one morning he begged you to let him erase them with magic. You refused though - you're adamant this is something to be faced.
Each time he's afraid he's all over you, needy for the feeling of your bodies fuse together, for your abandonment in his arms. He's passionate and eager for your delight - each night he wants to hear you screaming his name -again and again, and then tenderly hold your body worn out by the shivers all through the night.
As you indulge his needs when the sun goes down, you become kind but firm when it rises. He when all is said and done, you know you can't do this alone. It's a long way to make Asra feel safe and loved again, and it starts from his friends knowing how much he truly needs their love.
Disclaimer: as usual, this is PURELY FICTIONAL. I'm not a therapist, and this aren't suggestions about how to handle this sort of problems. Irl intimacy problems are shitty and actually really boring. That's why no one writes about it! Oh, and the fairy helmets technically glow, but it's almost invisible to the human's eye. Sry.

I've been replaying a lot of the routes and honestly, I sit there and I go "this is good, I enjoy it, but it could be better" and then I remember I have a keyboard, imagination, and an ao3 account but BAH I'll worry about rewrites later, what I'm ranting about today is Lucio-- not THAT.
Before I start, I will say all of what is stated is my own opinion and you are more than welcome to disagree, and if you, yourself like Lucio! He is not a bad character by any means, it's how his character is HANDLED that I am pointing out. Narratively speaking, in a sense. I always encourage open dialogue, so feel free to ask questions! And another note, this is not to shame anyone who likes Lucio either!
Gall, this guy. I can't even begin to understand WHY he is a romancable character.
If you are like me and have played his route last, you see exactly how much his deplorable actions impact ALL of the characters, especially Asra and Muriel. Also another note, Asra is much stronger than I am, if I saw someone I loved so deeply that went to creamtorium island palooza and dug through ASHES TO FIND THE BONES OF THEM, and THEN brought back to life only for them to get in a relationship with MY abuser and "fixed" him, I would have lost my marbles. I also feel like he is more passive in Lucio's route, having full faith in you which is AUGHHHH I am pulling out my hair thinking about it, Asra the gender nuetral positive term you are. Person, human, beautiful soul, magistrate, whatever. I would also like to make some points about Nadia and how she supposedly couldn't shape up Lucio (it's strange because if anyone were to do it, it's her) BUT I DIGRESS.
Lucio Lucio Lucio, ouggghh how I have complicated feelings towards you. I LOVE HIM as a character, especially since he's a slimy little weasle and continues to be one in his route, albeit a little more "self-aware" in a sense. Like yes, his traits can be seen as endearing, I simply adored that fact that he wasn't murdered by anyone other than his own huberus and impatience, very in character and I love that. Like yes!! Evil or ill-natured characters don't have to be these super cunning individuals that plan every step (I would talk about the Devil but he falls flat in that category) but rather, he's simply impulsive and simply put, dumb. He doesn't use his head like, ever which is rather endearing and pretty funny. Any route you speak to him in it's always "It's your fault this happened" and "Erm... was I supposed to be listening?" and the "Heh... not holding up my end of the bargain, I'm so smart" I GET IT. Look I know his whole route is about him taking accountability but all it amounts to is "I'm sorry I won't do it again" and essentially gets off the hook, like he doesn't try to fix of the damage he dealt to the people of Vesuvia during his reign, it's left to NADIA to fix which is downright disrespectful, because "Oopsies!! I'm just a dumb little brat bottom boy toy who cant think" and thats when I look at the camera, like. Just slow blink at it. Had to look up from my phone and sigh.
So, my problem lies with how they treated his redemption, character arc, and how to take accountability which is not well executed in the SLIGHTEST. OH AND NOT TO MENTION, THEY COMPLETELY LEFT MURIEL OUT OF LUCIO'S ROUTE. I know Muriel's "curse" makes people forget about him, but clearly in Muriel's route, Lucio is immune for whatever reason and ACTIVELY antagonizes Muriel. The spell might not work on him since he's in a sorta limbo, so I guess I can see why. But by that knowldge, there's many scenes where the cast goes over the whole "anything else we need you to apologize for, Lucio?" scenes where he's like "NOPE" while he's figiting (again pretty funny IF he wasn't romancable), he doesn't stop to think about Muriel ONCE. It's either about his mother (hi morga.... hiiii), the courtiers (also hiiiiiii courtiers....), disclosing that he may or may not have commited patricide until his mother pressed him to be honest, and then the fact that he and the courtiers work for the Devil or whatever, ugh. So you mean to tell me that he didn't even want to reminice about the coloseum-- which he supposedly really enjoyed -- ALL the bloodshed and people that died in the sake of entertainment BY MURIELS UNWILLING HANDS. Muriel followed orders because HE FORCED. Lucio made empty threats to harm Asra if Muriel didn't obey, which is textbook coersion, mind you, but the most disgusting thing was that Asra couldn't be hurt by Lucio in the FIRST PLACE.
Let's sit with that for a minute.
Lucio could NOT hurt Asra because of the deal he dealt with Asra's parents and the Devil. That doesn't get talked about at all and Asra's parents are so so so so sooooo dismissive about it when they meet with him. All Lucio says is "oopsies, I did that"
grown man btw. OH AND HEAVEN FORBID a man takes proper accountability and does more than say sorry.
Also, for clarification, I am not against redemption arcs at all!! But when is comes to Lucio, a serial abuser whose actions deeply impact all of the cast in one way or another, gets dismissed as "he didn't know any better" and leaves it at that, I can't help but feel offended. I WANT to see Lucio take accountability, yes, but the caveat here is that he should SHOW us he's sorry and killing/sealing the Devil doesn't cut it. His upright ending is a little more tasteful, but him simply going back to being a merc and NOT actively trying to be fixing the mistakes he made is disrespectful. His reversed ending, ughhhhh I hated it. Genuinely left such a bad taste in my mouth, the MC simply plays the whole "don't worry kitten daddy will take care of this" while CONQUERING THE WORLD?? WHY?? "Oooooh its the devil's heart" SILENCE NADIA'S REVERSED ROUTE SHOWED HER TAKING CONTROL OF THE REALM AND ORGANIZING MEETINGS WITH THE OTHER MAJOR ARCANA TO MAKE SURE THINGS ARE BALANCED. The only mildly perturbing thing about her was that she treated MC like a pet instead of an equal, sure fine whatever.
I can also understand that some people do like that stuff, I get it. A little bit for everyone!! You want a bratty bottom you get a bratty bottom!! But when the bratty bottom has done TERRIBLE THINGS that constantly get undermined by the narrative for the sake of "fixing him" is a big ol' alarm bell for me. I am all for a redepmtion arc, yes please!! But at the cost of the other characters and basically getting by with a slap on the wrist? Yeah, that won't cut it. Also me personally, I wouldn't let Lucio NEAR ME at all. My MC wouldn't either but its whatever they have to be the mary sue Y/N.

Asra's a better person then I am because if I spent years working to resurrect my longtime friend I was in love with more then life itself, spent three more years trying to fix them after the necromancy fucked up their mind, and then left for like a few weeks and came home to find they've started fucking specifically my ex who I used as a rebound after they died I think I'd actually level the city
i will never get over asra and the apprentice . imagine being a teenage wayward nomadic magician w/ no family and you meet this beautiful kind soul at a masquerade while you're there performing for coins. and when the empress comes by during the parade this person ushers you into their aunt's magic shop and you become friends and then year after year you see them at the masquerade, until eventually you start staying w them for weeks at a time and then traveling again, sometimes even bringing them with you. eventually they inherit the shop and you start kind of living there, and you've fallen so deeply in love but the red plague takes over the city and your lover wants to stay and use their magic to help the sick. it's ridiculous, you have your own little hideout you could both go to on the outskirts of the city, they don't need to be a hero. but they've always been better than you. kinder, more skilled in magic, more loving. you say things you can never take back and you leave them to their fate, only to regret it weeks later and of course, of course they're gone, the shop is empty and you follow the trail of their magic to that mass grave of an island where they burn the corpses. you dig and dig until your fingers bleed but all you can find are their bones and ash.
you lose your mind from grief, you beg and borrow and steal and cheat and lie and kill to bring them back. you do what you swore you'd never do and you find every book on black magic and deadly rituals with the major arcana and you commit acts so unspeakable as to make you unrecognizable. your lover would never have wanted this, they'd never forgive you, they'd never choose this path for you but you are single minded and selfish in your grief. you tear yourself apart trying to get them back, you use everyone you can, until finally you are able to involve everyone you know in a ritual to sell parts of yourselves to the devil. and you give up half of your heart in exchange for your lover being brought back to life.
but they come back terribly, horribly wrong. it's not them. the shell theyre in bears their face but they are a blank slate who cannot speak, walk, or understand you. and even when you're able to teach them these things once more, the spark of the person you once knew, the brilliance, the cleverness, is missing. and each time you try to get them to remember who you are to them, and who they once were, something in the spell goes wrong and they go comatose until you erase their memories. so to protect them, you lie. you lie and tell them you are their teacher and they are your apprentice and there was some sort of mysterious accident. you're still in love with them but you can't initiate anything when they're like this, and you don't want to know, really, if they have feelings for you or not. seeing them in this state becomes so unbearably painful and nostalgic and bittersweet and heartbreaking that you start to go on long trips by yourself, telling them it's for reasons they can't know but really it's because you have to get away from them. it's too much. what have you done?
also it’s now canon to me that those are their singing voices (gorgeous of course), but the fact that it was jinx, the one main!timeline ekko knew, and not powder was what really got i’m in SHAMBLES !!!!!

Viktor is one of my faves ever so of course I had to do him justice. He reminds me a LOT of Victor Frankenstein, who also happens to be one of my favorite classics characters of all time alongside Mina Harker, so it was an easier transition getting into Viktor’s mindset from V. Frankenstein’s himself
