Days like these are the ones that Dick Grayson loved the most. 

Maybe it was the way the wind blew on his hair as he walked down the bricked path, a leash held tight in his right hand as his dog, Haley—who, in his humble opinion was the most adorable pup to ever exist— skipped ahead of him happily, with her tongue sticking out of her mouth.

Maybe it was the calmness that came along with it whilst he leisurely strolled around the park aimlessly, with Haley directing the way, seemingly walking him instead of the other way around. He found that he didn’t mind that at all.

The summer air was at the perfect temperature— bright and sunny, yet not the usual blistering heat that would hover around the humid Gotham air.

A smile crossed his lips faintly as his eyes raked over his surroundings— civilians living their lives, all varying from an old couple who were sitting on the bench with their hands interlinked; children blowing bubbles, giggles flowing off their lips; some, like himself, were walking their dogs.

Or perhaps it was this. 

When Gotham showed the rare side of its true beauty, with the sun up in the sky, breeze blowing without the interruptions of Scarecrow’s fear toxin, or Joker Venom contaminating the air. All the crimes he’s faced in this city as Nightwing sometimes made him forget how beautiful it could be if it wasn’t corrupted with criminals.

Such wishful thinking it was.

Later then, after a few minutes of walking around the area, Dick and Haley came to a stop to take a break at a bench that was partly shaded by the large oak tree next to it. 

The man unclipped Haley’s leash to let her circle around excitedly as she wanted, to which the pup responded with a gleeful jump to his lap to lick his face before she jumped away again, barking joyfully, already making friends with the nearest dog she spotted.

Chuckling fondly at the dog’s antics, Dick leaned back and stretched his legs on the bench, sighing as satisfying pops sounded throughout his used joints.

“You have a very cute dog.” 

The slightly pitched voice had him jolting in his seat, pulling an—embarrasingly high-pitched— yelp from his mouth out of surprise. Way to be vigilant at all times…

His head snapped to the person who’d almost sent him to cardiac arrest, and it was… a little girl, looked no less than four or five years old. 

The little girl stood on the other side of the bench, with two low braids held by colourful hair elastics, lips pulling to a pout as she tilted her head, gaze alternating between where Haley was a few feet away and him, her brows pulling together.

Her words were a complement, yet it sounded like a simple observation.

“I really love dogs, but Grandma’s…allergic,” she went on, pausing to pronounce the word slowly with a tilt of her head before she continued, “to puppies. She gets all sneeze-y.” her lips pulled to a pout at that.

Dick’s jaw was left hanging open as he tried to find words over his startled heart. “Oh,” he managed to say then, his heart easing. “Thank you. I like your hair.” he returned the compliment with a small smile. 

She seemed to soften at the compliment, “Thank you.” she mumbled bashfully, looking down at her shoes, hands fidgeting and Dick couldn’t help but to find her adorable. “My auntie did them for me.”

At the mention of her aunt, Dick’s smile dropped slowly, realising the lack of her presence. His eyes subconsciously scan the area in search of her. Then he remembered that he didn’t even know who he was supposed to be looking for.

Turning back to the little girl—who had taken a seat on the other end of the bench, her legs dangling below her, not quite reaching the ground— he asked her, “Are you here alone?” His voice was soft, careful. Obviously, she couldn’t have been alone, right?

She shook her head, “With my auntie.” though her eyes were still bright as she stared at the energetic puppy running around across from her. “I lost her.” She shrugged, the innocence in her tone softened Dick’s heart. “But that’s okay, Auntie says she’d always find me if I’m lost.” She hopped onto the other end of the bench next to him.

The bold and easy trust in her voice should’ve reassured him, but, unfortunately, it was Gotham, for heaven’s sake. Everything in this city was worth the suspicion. Even in broad daylight.

“What’s your name?” asked Dick kindly.

“I’m Amelie,” the girl–Amelie answered enthusiastically. “But Amy for short.”

Dick smiled at her enthusiasm, “I’m Dick,” he returned, then jotted his chin at the hyper ball of fur and happiness, “And that’s Haley.”

As if feeling a pair of eyes on her, Haley trotted over to the small girl, blue eyes gleaming with hope as she rolled over to her back, a silent plea for some belly rubs— gave in without restraint, leaning down to graciously pet the happy pup.

Watching the two ladies with an undertone of fondness, Dick asked once more, trying to get the girl’s attention for a moment, “Can you tell me what your aunt looks like, so we can look for her?” he says the words with care— the last thing he wanted was to scare her off.

He didn’t mind her company, but he’d be a liar to say that he wasn’t worried to see her— a small girl— all by herself.

“Hmm…” she hummed absentmindedly, hands still occupied with petting his dog, whilst off-handedly giving him the details. “... and she’s pretty.” she beamed, admiration in her tone. “Really pretty.” Her eyes met his then, as though she was giving him the most important detail.

The older man nodded slowly in acknowledgement. “Okay, pretty…” he trailed off, considering searching for the woman, though he soon perished the thought as there was no way he was going to leave a child alone, deciding on waiting for another ten minutes to see if anyone would come for her.

And in the meantime, he entertained her by answering her chipper questions about Haley, listening to her ramble about a boy at her school that she disliked, to her favourite teacher. It was all very heartwarming for him.

And it made him briefly wonder about the future, of what his own daughter would be like if he were to have one.

He was shaken out of his thoughts of the—very far— future when Amelie called out, “Auntie!” and hopped off the bench, speeding over to a woman’s open arms with a giggle, a contrast to the older woman’s pale and worried look. 

He stood, and from his point of view, he could see Amelie's aunt checking the little one for any injuries and asking her if she was alright, the relief that melted her tense shoulders when the small girl eased her worries.

Then Amelie turned her head over her shoulder and grinned at Dick, eagerly taking her aunt’s hands, dragging her over to where Dick was standing. And his breath caught as they both stepped closer and her eyes finally met his own, his mouth parting slightly.

Amelie was right.

You were pretty.

Really pretty.

“Auntie,” Amelie looked up at you, “This is Mr. Dick. He’s so nice, and he has a dog, Auntie, her name is Haley!” she nudged her chin towards the grey and white ball of fur, who was now treading carefully over to you.

Dick held his hand out in greeting, offering a polite, yet a little lopsided, smile. He couldn’t help it, you were beautiful. “Dick Grayson,” he introduced himself, hoping he’s not making a fool out of himself in front of you. “You must be Amelie’s aunt.” Now that you’re up close, he could see the resemblance between you and your niece.

You took his hand with a small smile of your own,though a split-second before you could reply, your niece took over. “Uh-huh, yes she is!” the young girl nodded enthusiastically, “Isn’t she so pretty like I said?” her eyes sparkled as she looked up at him with an expectant grin on her lips.

A deep laugh rumbled from his throat, as he nodded in agreement, letting go of your hand. “Why, yes,” there was no trace of lies there, even if he tried. “Your auntie is very pretty, Amelie.” he chuckled at the sight of her bright smile, the girl was practically bouncing on her feet at his agreement.

You turned to give him a grateful smile, Dick swore that you were glowing. “Thank you for looking out for her, I got so worried when I saw that she’d run off.” The relief bled through your voice, eyes drifting as Amelie ran off again—close enough for you to keep an eye on her this time, thank God— to play with the dog.

“It’s no trouble at all, she’s a great company.” Dick waved you off, your eyes were captivating, maybe you were secretly a siren? Highly unlikely, if you were, you’d be under the Gotham Harbor.

A fond look crossed your expression. “That she is,” you nodded, agreeing. “She got that from my cousin.” 

You shared a small chuckle.

A thought appeared in Dick’s head, he then turned to you. “Are you new here? I’ve never seen you before,” he asked (it definitely wasn’t a poor attempt to start a conversation with you). I’m sure I would’ve noticed someone so beautiful if I had. 

No, he didn’t say that last part. But it did stay in his mind.

Despite his usual blasé, effortlessly flirty, and charming personality, he had a small fear of drawing her away. Huh, that never happened before.

Tearing your eyes away from Amelie, you turned to him at the sound of his question. “Oh, yeah, we’ve just moved here two months ago.” you smiled, referring to you and your niece. “I thought it’d be nice to let Amelie tag along as I explore around the city.”

Wherever she was from before, Dick thought what a massive downgrade it was to move here of all places.

“Well,” he chuckled, carding a hand through his hair. “I would say that I hope it lives up to your expectations, but if you had any before, please lower it, in fact, it won't live up to your expectations.” he told her truthfully. He was not going to be that person to tell her a white lie like ‘welcome to Gotham, I hope you like it here’.

Perhaps if you enjoyed the sight of criminals, muggers and thugs at every corner then you would.

His comment rippled a laugh from your throat and oh it was such a sweet sound. “I’ll keep that in mind.” you grinned, but then added: “And don’t worry, I didn’t have much expectations to begin with.” 

The man’s smile grew brighter if possible. “See? You’re trash-talking this place already, you’re one step closer to becoming a true Gothamite.” he laughed, pointing a finger at you.

You cocked your head, a smirk rising to your lips, “That’s the first step?” you raised a brow, a tint of amusement glinting in your eyes. “That was easy. What’s next, fawn over mysterious vigilantes?”

Dick’s smirk mirrored yours at that.

“Precisely.”

The conversation flowed easily after that. So much that neither of you noticed just how much time had passed. Not until Haley jumped to Dick’s lap, and Amelie squeezing between the two of you, leaning on your arm— both the ladies, seemingly had burnt out most of their energy.

Turning over to see your niece’s exhausted look, you glanced back at him apologetically, he quickly caught onto the meaning before you uttered the words aloud. “Guess it’s time for us to get back now,” And there it was. “The little miss needs her nap.”

Immediately, his mind screamed a loud NO in protest. 

But he shook away those thoughts, putting on an easy smile to his lips. “Ah, us, too, I think,” he agreed, ignoring the loud dramatic wail in his head, his hand coming to softly pet the dog on his lap. “This one also needs her nap, it looks like,”

As if to confirm, Haley let out a tired yawn, curling further into a ball.

Amelie clinged onto you like a koala as soon as you opened your arms. “Well,” you started, words directed to the girl in your hold, “say bye to Dick and Haley, baby.” you told her, standing up from the bench. So did Dick as he chipped back the leash on Haley’s harness.

The said girl managed a small wave, “Bye-bye, Mr. Dick. Bye-bye, Haley.” she mumbled, eyes drooping tiredly. 

Dick smiled softly, waving back at her. “Bye, Amelie. It was nice to meet you.” Then he met your eyes again. “You too, Miss…?” It was then that he realised that he hadn’t actually got your name.

You chuckled, realising the same thing before giving him your name. 

He repeated it. Beautiful name you had.

You stared at one another silently for a minute before you both heard Amelie mumble a question, “Can I see Haley again sometime?” 

“Of course you can,” he replied, he had a hard time saying ‘no’ to children. “But it depends on what your auntie says.” He hadn't broken your stare, and neither had you. Do you want to see me again?

A smile lifted your expression, the noon sun framing your face perfectly. “Only to see Haley, of course.” Yes.
