X2: X-Men United (2003) dir. Bryan Singer
This is pure mutant Mean Girls
This is why Mystique doesn't want him as a son-in-law.
The fact she would firebomb said car is entirely irrelevant >.>
A long overdue rant about the prequel trilogy
What's really at the core of my dislike for Jennifer Lawrence's portrayal of the character and indeed her whole arc in the X-Men prequel movies is that its treatment of the character is just plain demeaning.
In the comics you have a character that is older than both Magneto and Charles Xavier and has been hardened by centuries of human bigotry into an independent woman who takes no crap from anyone. X-Men First Class and Days of Future Past strip all this away leading to the fatuous line: "Are you still Charles's Raven... or are you Mystique?" It defines the character in terms of male expectations, rather than this being a character who defines herself.
In Days of Future Past we're supposed to believe that she only becomes angry because of Erik filling her head with hatred. This goes to imply that her childhood experiences don't really matter because they've been wiped away by living in a mansion with Charles. It fundamentally diminishes her own life experiences just to fit the bizarre (from the point of view of comics history) sibling connection the film-makers decided to forge.
Yes the character was over-sexualised in the Original Trilogy. Yes she didn't have much to say, but the character is meant to be enigmatic and mysterious, because it's in her name! We know next to nothing about who she is or where she comes from and this gives her a very dangerous quality, which could have been expounded on in interesting ways. Instead the character was neutered by being forced into making a choice between Magneto and Xavier. Days of Future Past at least she suggests she has agency by choosing to go her own way at the end, but in Apocalypse? Right back to Charles!
For me, the portrayal in the prequel trilogy will always be Mystique in name only. Hopefully future interpretations will avoid the prequel trilogy's mistakes.

First post in a while!! hi tumblr, im back with a new obsession
Raven Darkholme how I love you <3
This scene in X2 was absolutely hell to shoot, as there were clouds of mosquitos and other flies attracted to the lights. I suspect that's partly why they had a camp fire to try and keep the flies away.
It also made me wonder, can Mystique make changes to her biochemistry to make herself less susceptible to insect bites? It's been documented that mosquitos are less attracted to certain people and it's likely something she can mimic.
Also, it really is striking how Mystique is almost completely invisible in the dark in this photo. Kurt likely would too if he were further away.

Sorry to bother you, but i just found your account and was wondering if you had any examples of Mystique using her healing factor or using her shapeshifting to camouflage in the environment instead of turning into something else?
The healing factor is a little tricky as most of the time its a case of her being injured one panel and then not the next. But here's a nice panel of her morphing away a headshot and two more of her camouflaging (from her first series, issues #1 and #15).

Raven Darkhölme is an enigmatic bisexual antagonist, a malleable mastermind, the mercurial Mystique; gifted w/ the mutant power of Shapeshifting (+ longevity), her origins are largely unknown, but she's led many lives, including as a detective & government agent; though, while she's parent to X-Men alums Nightcrawler (by birth) & Rogue (adopted), she's best known as a criminal; she's been a mercenary, assassin, terrorist, spy, ally to the Hellfire Club, co-leader (with wife Destiny) of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and more; though, when it suits her aims (of saving self, her love, or fighting for mutantkind), she's occasionally aided the X-Men & similar mutant efforts!
