ask nicely // jack abbot
You and Jack don't get along. When a confrontation finally pushes you over the edge, both of you discover that the only thing more intense than your arguments is giving in.
You’d been the charge nurse for three weeks now, filling in for Dana while she was on sabbatical. From the moment you stepped onto the floor, you took the "charge” in your title quite literally, pulling rank over the doctors whenever their egos got in the way of patient care.
Jack hated that it worked. He hated even more that you were genuinely good at keeping the chaotic system of the ER from collapsing.
Your dynamic was a constant collision.
When he tried to snap at you, you’d come back ten times hotter, a habit that infuriated him to no end. Robby often joked that Jack’s irritation stemmed from the fact that no one had ever dared give him back the same energy he doled out.
Jack didn't see it that way. To him, you were simply unprofessional.
To you, bossing him around was the highlight of your shift.
The breaking point came during your shift tonight. Everyone had been betting on when you two would explode.
The ER was drowning in trauma calls and flu season overflow. In the middle of the chaos, Jack raised his voice at you, his frustration boiling over in front of the entire staff.
You froze for a second, eyes blinking as the noise of the ER faded into the background.
Then, a shadow crossed your expression, and Jack’s eyes widened. He knew he fucked up. That he’d crossed some imaginary line that had been drawn between the two of you.

And the first time you go out with your friends with the full intention to find someone, you meet jack abbot. and he is hell bent on making sure you do not forget him.

(a/n: all i gotta say is hell yeah. also ignore the fact that jack is able to be around during the night even though he works night shift lmao. just use your imagination.)
The thing about opening a relationship is that someone has to actually want to be in one.
You'd been turning this thought over for three weeks now, looking for the flaw. You'd found it pretty quickly. The flaw was Derek.
Derek, who had spent four months gently, persistently, lovingly lobbying for what he called “an evolved approach to modern partnership.” Derek, who had bookmarked three articles about ethical non monogamy and left them open on the shared laptop like bread crumbs he expected you to follow. Derek, who had said, with earnest sincerity, “I just think we're evolved enough for this, babe. Don't you?”
You had said yes because you were thirty years old and had been with this man for ten of those years and somewhere along the way you had apparently misplaced the part of yourself that said no, actually, I don't.
So: open relationship. Officially, as of three Saturdays ago, you were doing this.
Derek had downloaded Hinge, Bumble, Tinder, and some other app that you'd never heard of and didn't ask about. He'd spent an entire Sunday afternoon cycling through profile photos, soliciting your opinion on which ones showed his authentic self, while you sat six feet away inking a peony onto a client's shoulder and making noises of vague encouragement.

part 1
You had convinced yourself the guest room was a real contingency and not just a lie you’d been telling yourself to justify staying in this bed for as long as you had. Jack’s voice cut through the dark. "When did you stop?"
You turned your head, the friction of the pillow loud in the quiet. He wasn’t looking at you, he was staring at the ceiling. "Stop what?"
"Choosing things for yourself."
You tried to find an answer, but your throat was dry, your mind a terrifying blank.
You had chosen Derek. It felt like a single, monumental decision at the time, but you realized now it was actually a thousand tiny surrenders. Incrementally, year by year, you had rearranged the furniture of your entire life to fit around the shape of him.
"I don't know," you said finally.
Eventually, you did go. You waited until his breathing evened out into sound of deep sleep. You lay there long enough to know that if you didn't move in this exact heartbeat, you’d be anchored there forever.
You gathered yourself, slipping out from under the covers and retreating to the guest room. The bed was cold. You lay there, staring at an unfamiliar ceiling, while his question sat open in the center of your chest.
When sleep finally pulled you under, you didn't dream about Derek.

On what was supposed to be a relaxing day off, Robby called and begged for you to come into work around 2:00pm. It had been a shitshow of a day and they were short staffed. Jack was off playing cops and robbers so you dressed and headed in.
When you arrived, you could immediately see the fatigue weighing on your friend. “Michael?” you said softly as you came up beside him.

The Coffee Run Pt.2
Jack Abbot x Café Owner Reader
Synopsis: Abbot never meant for a simple coffee run to become the best part of his day.
When his talkative coworker Mateo hands over the responsibility of picking up the emergency department's daily coffee order, Abbot finds himself returning to the same cozy neighborhood café every afternoon. What starts as a quick stop for caffeine soon turns into lingering conversations, playful flirting, and a growing connection with the café's charming owner.
As the coffee becomes routine, so does finding reasons to stay just a little longer, proving that sometimes the best things in life begin with nothing more than the usual order.
Contains: Coffee shop romance • Slow burn • Shy doctor × flirty café owner • Workplace romance • Mutual pining • Matchmaking friends • Cozy vibes • Lots of flirting • Found family • HEA
----- Here's the part 2 everyone wanted :)
The emergency department was still laughing five minutes later.
"I still think we should frame the cup," Dr. Shen said as he walked past with a chart tucked under one arm.
Lena nodded thoughtfully. "Or laminate it."
"I hate all of you," Abbot muttered.
"You don't mean that," Mateo replied, taking another sip of his latte.
"I really do."
"Nope."
Abbot looked down at the cup again.
**♡ Call me?**
He hadn't imagined it.
You'd actually written it. His thumb brushed over the black marker before he quickly realized what he was doing and lowered the cup again.
Mateo caught it immediately. "You've looked at it six times."
"I have not."
"Seven."
"I wasn't counting."
"I was."
Abbot sighed heavily.
"I don't..." He glanced around to make sure no patients were nearby before lowering his voice. "What am I supposed to say?"
Mateo stared at him. "...You're kidding."
"I'm serious."
"You've talked to trauma surgeons during mass casualty events without breaking a sweat."
"That's different."
"How?"
"They don't make me nervous."
Lena laughed into her coffee. "The man can intubate a crashing patient," she said, "but one cute barista gives him her number, and suddenly he forgets how phones work."
"I know how phones work."
"Evidence suggests otherwise."
-----
That night, long after his shift ended, Abbot sat alone in his house.
His house was quiet. Too quiet. His phone rested on the coffee table in front of him.
Beside it...The coffee cup.
He'd rinsed it out. Not because he planned on keeping it. Definitely not....Maybe for a day. He picked up his phone.
Opened Messages. Typed the number. Then stopped.
*"Hi."*
No. Too boring. He erased it.
*"Hey, it's Abbot."*
Delete.
*"This is the awkward doctor you keep making blush."*
...
Absolutely not.
Delete.
He dropped his head back against the couch.
"Why is this harder than residency?"
---
Across town, you were closing up the café.
You flipped the sign to **Closed**, wiped down the espresso machine, and glanced again at your own phone resting beside the register. Nothing.
You smiled to yourself.
"He hasn't texted yet." From the back room, your coworker Emma poked her head out. "The doctor?"
You looked up innocently. "What doctor?"
"The one you've been smiling at every afternoon for the last month."
"I smile at everyone."
Emma gave you a look. "You wrote your number on his cup."
"I did."
"And now you've checked your phone..." She looked toward the register. "...about twenty times."
"I have not."
"Eighteen?"
You laughed. "He's shy."
"I noticed."
"I don't want him to think I'm expecting some elaborate message."
Emma folded a towel. "I think that man could send 'Hi' and you'd still kick your feet."
"...Probably."
---
Nearly midnight. Abbot was still staring at the message screen. Finally, before he could overthink it again, he typed:
*Hi. This is Abbot. I wasn't sure what to say, so Mateo told me to stop overthinking it. I hope you made it home safely.**
He read it three times. Winced.
Then, before he could delete it- He hit send. The message delivered instantly. His heart began pounding. "...Well." There was no taking it back now. Less than thirty seconds later...His phone buzzed.
He opened it so fast he nearly dropped it.
*I was wondering how long you'd take. 😊 For the record, that's a very Abbot first text. And yes, I made it home. I hope your shift wasn't too awful.**
He smiled before he even realized he was doing it. Then another message appeared.
*Also...*
*I told you I'd see you tomorrow. Now I get to talk to you after work too. I think I got the better deal. *
Abbot laughed quietly to himself. Maybe...Just maybe...Mateo had been right all along.
-----
The next morning, for the first time in weeks, Abbot wasn't wearing scrubs.
He'd actually slept. Not particularly well, he'd spent far too much of the night rereading a certain text conversation, but he had slept. His day off was a rare luxury.
So naturally...He found himself standing outside the coffee shop at eight-thirty in the morning.
He shook his head to himself. "You're hopeless." The familiar bell chimed overhead as he stepped inside. You looked up from the espresso machine.
The second you saw him, your entire face lit up. "Well," you said with a grin. "If it isn't my favorite doctor."
Abbot smiled. "Morning."
"You came to see me on your day off?"
"I..." He paused. "...Maybe."
Your smile only widened. "I like this answer."
He stepped up to the counter, hands tucked into the pockets of his hoodie. "You remembered I was off?"
You raised an eyebrow. "You've mentioned your schedule enough that I could probably make it myself."
"...Right."
"I pay attention."
"I've noticed."
You leaned against the counter. "So..." Your eyes drifted over him for a second. "You clean up nice."
He blinked. "I'm wearing a hoodie."
"Mhm."
"And jeans."
"Mhm."
"I don't think I did much cleaning up."
You smiled. "I wasn't talking about the clothes."
His ears immediately turned pink.
"There it is," you said happily.
"What?"
"The blush."
He sighed. "I should've seen that coming."
"You really should have."
You walked around the counter, stopping just on the other side of it.
"So..." you asked. "What can I get you?"
"You pick."
"Again?"
"I trusted you yesterday."
"And?"
"I trust you today."
Your smile softened. "I like hearing you say that."
Abbot watched as you began making his drink, the comfortable silence settling between you. There was something he'd been thinking about since yesterday. Actually...Since the moment he'd seen his cup.
"You know..."
You glanced over your shoulder. "Hm?"
He rubbed the back of his neck. "...Can I ask you something?"
"You can ask me anything."
He hesitated for another second. "...Why did you leave me your number?"
The café fell quiet. You stopped tamping the espresso. Slowly...You looked at him. Held his gaze for a long moment.
Then shook your head. "Are you normally like this?"
Abbot frowned. "...Like what?"
You laughed. "Dense."
He blinked. "...Excuse me?"
You smiled, trying not to laugh harder. "Are you always this dense?"
Abbot stood there completely confused. "I mean..." He thought about it. "...I don't think so-"
"I left my number because I like you," you interrupted, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
He froze.
You continued before he could say anything. "I thought that was kind of obvious."
His mouth opened. Closed.
"I flirt with you every time you come in here."
He stared at you. "I figured..." He looked away, rubbing the back of his neck again. "...I figured you were just being nice or..." He cleared his throat. "...a tip or something."
A slow smirk spread across your face. "I mean..." You leaned against the counter. "I'd take a tip if you're offering."
Abbot covered his face with both hands. "Oh no."
"What?"
"I was going to ask which kind..." He peeked at you through his fingers. "...but I don't want the answer to that question."
Your eyebrows lifted innocently. "Oh..." You tilted your head. "I mean..." A mischievous smile tugged at the corners of your lips. "I can answer the question if you'd like."
Abbot made the mistake of looking directly at you. The grin on your face told him everything he needed to know.
He groaned. "...You're doing this on purpose."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"You absolutely do."
"I might."
He laughed despite himself, shaking his head. "You enjoy watching me panic."
"I really, really do."
"I've noticed."
You slid his latte across the counter, a perfect tulip blooming in the foam. "For the record," you said, your voice softer now, "I wasn't trying to embarrass you."
He looked up.
"I just got tired of waiting."
His expression softened. "You... were waiting?"
You nodded. "For weeks."
"You never said anything."
"I flirted with you constantly."
"I thought you were just friendly."
"I called you handsome."
"I thought you were joking."
"I told you I only flirt with customers I think are handsome."
"I thought..." He sighed, a sheepish smile creeping onto his face. "...I don't know what I thought."
You laughed. "I noticed."
He looked at his coffee before meeting your eyes again. "I'm glad you got impatient."
Your teasing smile faded into something gentler. "So am I."
For a second, neither of you spoke. Then you rested your chin in your hand. "So..."
He narrowed his eyes. "...Why do I feel like you're about to say something that makes me blush again?"
"I wasn't."
"You weren't?"
"I was going to ask if you'd let me take you to dinner."
Abbot blinked. This time...It wasn't embarrassment that stole his words. It was surprise.
You smiled nervously for the first time since he'd met you. "So..." You tucked a loose strand of hair behind your ear. "...Doctor Abbot......would you like to go on a date?"
Abbot blinked. "You... want to go on a date with me?"
For the first time since he'd met you, your confidence wavered. "...Only if you want to."
A grin slowly spread across his face. "I thought I'd be the one asking."
"You took too long."
"I've been told that."
"By me?"
"Mostly by you."
You laughed, relief washing over your features. "So... is that a yes?"
Abbot stepped a little closer to the counter, smiling in a way you'd never seen before.
"It's definitely a yes."
Your smile grew. "Good."
"I do have one condition."
You tilted your head. "Oh?"
"I get to pick you up."
Your eyebrows lifted. "You don't have to do that."
"I know." His smile softened. "I want to."
The words were simple. Genuine. But they caught you completely off guard.
You stared at him for a second before your cheeks warmed. "...Okay."
Abbot noticed immediately. "There it is."
"What?"
"The blush."
You blinked. "I don't blush."
"You absolutely do."
"I've never-"
"You are right now."
You covered your face with one hand. "Oh, you've got to be kidding."
A quiet laugh escaped him. For perhaps the first time since meeting you...He'd managed to fluster the one person who always seemed impossible to fluster.
You peeked through your fingers. "...Don't get used to this."
"I don't know," Abbot teased. "I kind of like this version."
You pointed at him dramatically. "That was mean."
"It was."
"...Do it again."
He laughed. "I'll think about it."
-----
Friday Evening
Abbot pulled into the parking lot a few minutes early. He'd changed out of his usual hoodies and scrubs into a dark navy button-down, neatly pressed slacks, and polished shoes. A light spray of cologne lingered as he checked the time.
He wasn't usually nervous. Tonight was different. The front door opened. He looked up. You stepped outside wearing an outfit that was a little dressier than anything he'd seen you in before.
For a second...He simply stared.
You suddenly became very interested in looking anywhere except at him. "...Is it too much?"
Abbot shook his head almost immediately. "No."
"No?"
"You look..." He searched for the right word before smiling. "...Beautiful."
You froze. "Oh."
He chuckled softly. "I got you."
"You did."
"I wasn't even trying."
"I know."
You laughed, cheeks still warm. "...Let's go before I embarrass myself."
Mateo's restaurant recommendation turned out to be perfect. Soft lighting. Quiet music. A table tucked near the window. Throughout dinner, the conversation came easily, but something had changed.
The person who usually teased him relentlessly......was quieter.
You laughed. You smiled. But every compliment seemed to make you look down at the table. Every time your eyes met his for too long...you looked away first.
Halfway through dinner, Abbot finally asked gently, "Is everything okay?"
You looked up. "Hm?"
"You're acting..." He smiled. "...not like your normal self."
You laughed. "I don't know what you're talking about."
He wasn't convinced. But he simply smiled. "Okay." He let the subject drop.
Later, after dinner, you both walked slowly toward Abbot's car beneath the glow of the parking lot lights.
After a comfortable silence, he spoke again. "So..."
You looked over. "My question from earlier."
You sighed. "Oh no."
"What's going on?" He smiled warmly. "I feel like I've made you blush more tonight than you've made me."
You looked down at the pavement. "I'm not in my space."
He waited.
"My café is..." You searched for the words. "...my comfort zone." You smiled sheepishly. "I know every corner. I know everyone who walks in. I know exactly who I am there." You laughed quietly. "But out here..."
You gestured around. "...it's harder to feel that confident."
Abbot nodded in understanding. "So the fearless coffee shop owner is secretly a little shy?"
You smiled despite yourself. "...Maybe."
"I kind of like knowing that."
You looked up. "Yeah?"
"Yeah."
For a moment, neither of you said anything. The silence wasn't awkward. Just comfortable.
You smiled. "So..."
"So?"
"I had a really nice time tonight."
Abbot's smile matched yours. "I did too."
Neither of you seemed in much of a hurry to say goodnight. Abbot stepped closer while you did everything you could to look anywhere but at him.
You cleared your throat. "My heart is racing right now."
A small smile tugged at his lips. "That's not necessarily a bad thing."
He took another step forward, closing the distance between you until there was barely any space left. Suddenly, the nearby lamppost became the most fascinating thing you'd ever seen.
"Y/N."
The way he said your name, warm and amused, made your stomach flip. "Yeah?" you asked, still refusing to look at him.
He tilted his head, trying to catch your eye, a grin growing as he noticed the color rising in your cheeks. "Can you look at me, please, sweetheart?"
Your eyes widened. "Oh my God... no, you did not." You took a step back, covering your face with both hands.
He blinked, looking equal parts confused and entertained. "What?"
You let out a dramatic sigh, shaking your head. "You... all of you. 'Sweetheart?' Seriously?" You laughed, peeking at him through your fingers. "Talk about a flirt."
He laughed with you, the sound soft and genuine. Then he stepped closer.
Again.
Your breath caught as you realized just how little distance remained between you.
"Do I make you nervous, sweetheart?" he asked, unable to hide the amusement in his smile.
You managed a quick glance before looking away again. "I think..." You smiled to yourself. "I think you already know the answer to that, Dr. Abbot."
His smile softened. For a moment, he simply looked at you, his gaze lingering as though he was memorizing every feature. Then, with gentle fingers, he tipped your chin upward until your eyes met his. "That's better."
You groaned quietly, rolling your eyes despite the smile tugging at your lips. "This is so embarrassing."
A quiet laugh escaped him as he brushed a loose strand of hair behind your ear. "Why?"
You hesitated before answering, your voice barely above a whisper. "Because... you're standing really close to me..."
He waited patiently.
"...and I like the way your cologne smells."
His smile turned warmer, never once breaking eye contact. "Well, sweetheart," he murmured, "I think this is the part where we kiss."
A slow smile spread across your face as you gave a tiny nod. "I think you might be right."
He closed the remaining distance, his hands settling gently at your waist before pulling you toward him.
The kiss wasn't rushed.
It was slow, lingering, like neither of you wanted the moment to end.
Without thinking, your hands found their way around his neck. One slipped into his curls, your fingers gently threading through them, drawing another soft smile from him against your lips.
For a long moment, neither of you spoke.
You simply stood there, wrapped in each other's arms, letting the quiet closeness say everything the two of you hadn't yet found the words for.

Mom’s Spaghetti
“You’ve been staring into space for like…” Marshall fake checked his watch. “…forty-five minutes.”
“I’ve had a rough week.”
“Yeah?”
She nodded “Everything’s just…annoying.”
He looked at her for a second before opening the fridge. “No dramatic speeches?”
“What?”
“I figured this was the part where you tell me life has no meaning.”
“You watch way too many movies.”
“I make enough depressing music. I don’t need the dialogue too.”
She laughed.
He shrugged like it wasn’t a big deal. “Figured I’d try fixing one problem.” He pulled out a container filled with cooked spaghetti.
Her eyebrows shot up. “…What.”
He grinned without looking up.
“What'r you doing… why's your face like that?”
He held up the container. “Yesterday’s spaghetti.”
“You made spaghetti…to make spaghetti?”
“Exactly.” He looked at her like it was obvious. “You can’t fake leftovers.”
“You actually planned this?”
“I had to.” he laid the container on the counter shutting the refrigerator door then popped the lid off. “It's supposed to taste like reheated leftovers.”
“I thought you’d just boil fresh noodles.”
“Nah.” he looked at her as if she'd just offended him somehow and shook his head.
“Fresh noodles are good.” she tried defending the idea.
He dumped a spoonful of thick meat sauce into the skillet.
“But this?” He pointed at the chilled spaghetti. “It's nostalgic.”
The meat sizzled while he stirred in onions and garlic. The smell filled the kitchen almost immediately. “You hungry now?”
“I was hungry before.”
“Nah.” He smirked. “You weren’t hungry, you were ‘I guess I’ll eat eventually’ hungry.”
“There’s a difference?”
“Huge difference.” He sprinkled oregano into the sauce. He waited until the sauce thickened before grabbing the cold spaghetti. Instead of dropping it into boiling water, he added the chilled noodles straight into the skillet.
She watched him toss everything together. “…That’s it?”
He nodded. “Yep.”
She got up making her way over, looking over his shoulder..
“It feels wrong.”
“It looks wrong.”
He pointed the wooden spoon at her as she was about to reach in.“Don’t touch it yet.”
“I wasn’t going to.”
“I saw your hand move.”
“It twitched.”
“Uh-huh.”
“I swear.”
“Mhm.” he went back into chef mode, the noodles slowly soaked up the sauce as he kept folding everything together. Nothing fancy. Just enough time for the pasta to heat through and absorb every bit of the rich tomato sauce.
Marshall gave it one last toss before reaching for the parmesan.
“What are you doing now?” she leaned her head against his shoulder now.
“The finishing touch.”
He shook a generous amount over the pan. "Shaky parmesan.”
“Shaky parmesan?”
He scooped generous portions into two bowls.
No delicate presentation.
No parsley.
No chef’s flourish.
Just a big helping of spaghetti exactly the way he’d remembered it.
"Go sit your nosey ass down" he glared playfully at her as she made her way over to the island doing as told.
He slid the bowl toward her. “There.”
She looked down at it. “So…this is Mom’s Spaghetti?”
He nodded once. “Closest thing to what I grew up eating.”
There was a brief pause. Then he ruined the moment exactly as expected. “Don’t get emotional.”
“I’m not.”
“Cause if you start crying over pasta, I’m gonna have questions.”
She twirled a forkful and took a bite. The noodles had soaked up the sauce instead of having it sit on top. Everything tasted rich, savory and comforting. Like something someone’s mom actually made after a long day.
Marshall pretended to stare at his own bowl as they sat next to each other eating “…Well?”
She chewed then took another bite. “…Okay.”
He looked up. "Okay?"
A slight chuckle left her mouth filled of spaghetti . “It’s really good.”
"‘Really good’ isn’t enough.”
“What do you want me to say?”
He leaned back. “I built an entire restaurant around this stuff.”
“So you’re fishing for compliments?”
“I’m fishing for validation.”
“You already have thousands of reviews.”
“Yeah, but they’re strangers.” He pointed his fork toward her. “You’re mean enough to tell me if it actually sucks.”
“It doesn’t.” she took another mouthful, savoring every bit of the comforting taste.
“You sure?”
She nodded her head "Mmhhh.”
He nodded once, finally satisfied.
Then, she got an idea.
"No palms sweaty, no knees weak and my arms aren't heavy"
He tried to hide the amused laugh that was about to escape him, "no vomit on your sweater either"
She looked down at her hoodie. “Still clean.”
He smirked. “Good. Cause if you threw up after all that work…” He took another bite, completely straight-faced. "you'd be doing the dishes for a month."
At the end of the day this was his way of making her feel a sense of comfort after a hard time, he looked down at her enjoying the simple meal, glad that he was able to lift her mood up even if just a little bit.
"You got a little..." he pointed at the corner of his. own face "right there".
She reached up swiping her napkin across her lower lip. "Got it?"
"Missed it completely" he chuckled, shaking his head.
She tried again, dabbing everywhere but the dirty spot. "Here?"
Marshall found it amusing "You're just makin' it worse" He took the napkin from her, grabbing her chin softly "hold still messy" his expression softened from teasing to gentle as he carefully dabbed away the sauce at the edge of her mouth.
"There" He tossed the napkin onto the counter as he pulled her in with one arm over her shoulder to kiss her temple "Sweaters safe for now, don't ruin it."

Everyone thought Andrew Cody was a pervert.
And, really, how could they not?
They see him; all big and brooding, with wrinkles around his eyes and rough hands. And beside him stands you; soft and innocent, all shy smiles and quiet words. A sweetheart by every definition of the word.
He's older than you. Bigger than you. Meaner than you. All it takes is one glance at your manicured fingers around his broad bicep and your cheek pressed to his shoulder to know that, yeah. He's probably (definitely) taking advantage of you.
Pope Cody?
In a backwards hat?
