I love when a poster tries to convince people they know what they're talking about by presenting bare-minimum academic credentials and nothing else. It's giving nothing.
Like sure I get that bachelor’s degrees aren’t shit, but I’ve gotten published in pop science publications talking about fields that have nothing to do with my degree. I know a linguist who’s written several articles about physics, a physicist who’s written about biology, and a my grandmother worked in computer science with a degree in American studies.
Understanding most topics on a surface level or even a bit deeper is just reading and doing math.
Least trustworthy pop science writer?
Linguist writing about physics
Physicist writing about biology
A new challenger appears!!!
Least trustworthy poster (revised)
Linguistics major posting about physics
Physics major posting about biology
Psychology major posting about psychology
listen hobbit pussy could be mediocre (doubtful) but even if it was it's still followed by a 17 course homecooked meal and the kind of weed that would make sauron scared. lithe beautiful immortal elven pussy has no power compared to the simple, hardworking hobbit. and it goes without saying that you cannot handle dwarven pussy.
Even if this wasn't a wildly generous bit of date shifting (Youtube launched in 2006, Netflix began serving streaming video in 2007, both became ubiquitous by the early 2010s) ... even IF you take this wildly conservative numbers as a given, ten years still represents nearly a third of the public-facing internet's life!
For reference, here's a full bibliography of bad* [tumblr]* posts which were incorporated into the above comment:
In hindsight, it was my fault for assuming that my recollection of bad* [tumblr]* posts was in any way typical.

i love that [tumblr] would just hire anyone off the street as long as they weren't asking to be paid too much
A server is basically a computer that needs to be somewhere with a good internet connection. If only we could figure out a way for multiple servers to be colocated at the same site so that we could share the costs of network maintenance, perhaps some kind of "center" that manages all of our "data" at once. Let's imagine a beautiful world together.
"let's all run websites on our personal dell laptops instead of relying on data centers" is the smelting pig iron in our backyards of the information age
I'm starting to feel like some of you guys don't actually have that good a grasp of what a data center is or what it does
"We need to get rid of data centers" says the tumblr user who has a career doing gig work via cloud apps
Well, I know pretty well what a data center is, and you are wrong.
You don't need data centers to serve Tumblr. Or your gps maps. And for sure not to use a gig jobs app.
You need a server, indeed. That server is basically a computer that needs to be somewhere with a good internet connection. If the site or app has a lot of usage, you may need several of them, rarely more than the lower two figures. That's it.
"the internet we know" doesn't rely on data centers. Data centers, as we know nowadays, basically were invented by Amazon, who started selling them "as a service" maybe 15 years ago. Before that, companies used to, well, have their own servers. Often in their own office buildings. Sometimes in MUCH smaller facilities dedicated to host servers.
But the modern concept of data server? That is needed mostly for data mining and selling processing power as a service, so shitty startups can try to invent the next torment Nexus without needing to hire people who actually know how to work with physical servers nor spending big money on hardware.
But most of the apps and websites you use everyday? Any shitty laptop could very well be used as their server and support a couple of hundred concurrent users without breaking a sweat.
Honestly, they are just needed for the worst parts of the internet.
Favourite parts of this post:
Read "gig jobs using cloud apps" and thought I meant Uber Eats
Unironic Torment Nexus reference in a serious discourse post in 2026
Implication that companies running their own data servers locally is a more energy efficient model than renting cloud VMs
"The Internet you know could run off of your laptop"; ??? 80+% of all user Internet traffic is HD video streaming via YouTube, Netflix and Tiktok etc - no, you don't get to dismiss that in the tags! The average Internet user watches almost two hours of such footage per day. Each of these services is shifting anywhere up to an exabyte of data daily, and literally all of this traffic is processed via data centers and routed over services hosted on the cloud. Like buddy, what the actual fuck are you talking about
At this point the primary function of the Internet is to serve streamed video and to a lesser extent other multimedia content. Like, that is just what the system is now.
Sure you can say it's a blight on society and we should dismantle the internet as experienced by its six billion strong global userbase, but if you think that you should say that outright instead of pretending you could swap that out for a Dell laptop running bulletin board software in the basement and that nobody would notice
You see this sort of post a lot in left circles, and it's a very cute idea, but conservatives aren't actually that dumb. You might be able to make them nod along to what you're saying (assuming you don't hit on the big ticket culture war issues, this absolutely would not work for immigration and probably won't work for climate change), but you're not actually going to change anyone's mind like this.
Consider the opposite. A conservative wants to convince her left-wing friends to back her ideas. "Immigration is a labor issue. By reducing the number of immigrants we can increase average wages for workers." This does not work on many left-wingers.
Basically everyone who disagrees with me is a sort of dog who can be appeased by speaking in the right tone of voice
It's not so much that everyone who disagrees with you is like that as that some of them are like that, and they're disproportionately swing voters, so there are many contexts where you have more to gain than to lose. this is particularly true for examples like these, where it's more about the specific colouring you give to your true beliefs than about misrepresenting what you think and want
Isn't this basically what politicians do when they move from primary elections into the general?

in my little pony universe youd go to a job interview and theyd be like so how does your cutiemark reflect your dedication to this position. And every time youd have to spew some bullshit about how your cutiemark of two tennis rackets actually means youre a team player and good at multitasking and view the market like a playing field. or whatever. and you wouldnt even get the job
Thanks to Equestria v Sugar Sprinkle, cutie mark interview questions are considered hiring discrimination, so if anypony asks you any cutiemark related questions or even alludes to any questions about your cutiemark such as "In your own words, describe your life purpose" you can and should refuse to answer. Know your rights, ponies.
Equestrian case-law on this is pretty spotty though. Most decisions like Equestria vs Sugar Sprinkle, or Belle vs Glimmer, are slapdash additions to the legal code after the Saddle Arabian Oil Crisis ushered in the collapse of the command economy. Constitutional law clearly had no provisions for "cutie mark discrimination" given that the previous economic order was literally propping up empty nightclubs with subsidies just to generate jobs for all the ponies whose "true calling" was being a fucking DJ! And while the "Invisible Hoof" Faction did their best to throw together a series of bills to saddle the rough ride into a free market economy, it was absolutely a "results over proper procedure" affair. And they *certainly* never had the supermajority of the High Council they would have needed to enshrine any of those bills in the constitution!
Now that we are ~30 years out from those heady days, and "maintain the social order at all costs" is no longer the name of the game, do you really wanna be the poster child for the Discord Faction's brand new Celestia's Court petition to overturn precedent? Push this too far and we are gonna be back to the days of firing Earth Ponies from white collar jobs for "lacking cultural fit". Nopony wants that!
Keep it chill out there if it isn't egregious, is all I am saying.

i would so love to know what was going on in this persons head. i would rather be shot dead than sneak food into a movie theatre. What?
this is the same guy
Make-up is art applied to the face, in this sense it can be beautiful and evocative and a way to express the individual aesthetic sensibilities of the person wearing it. the idea that there is a "correct" minimal amount of makeup required to achieve a "natural" look flies in the face of this fact.
The corollary to this is that some of the only people doing makeup correctly are goths, scene kids, and drag queens
it seems like in bdsm the "rewards" and the "punishments" look very similar. this concerns me a great deal, because it points to a system of misaligned incentives. if we're not careful, it's even possible that a rational actor could deliberately violate regulations, because the penalties for rule violations are in fact incentivized. one shudders to think of the consequences of such an arrangement
