LoRaWAN, what is it?

NFC in Asset Tracking: What is It?

Near Field Communication (NFC) is a short-range (usually only a few centimeters) technology. An NFC tag is a small chip with no battery that is fixed to an asset. When a smart device (e.g. Smartphone) or reader is touched to the chip, the NFC tag will emit all the asset data (ID, login into the system with location data, status, maintenance history) to your asset tracking system. No more scanning, barcodes or entry. Just touch.

The real difficulty with accurate asset tracking hasn't been technology-it's been adoption. Employees either forget to sign their logs, scan their barcodes correctly or use the wrong document. NFC Applications:

NFC is especially suited to situations where assets are handled individually, and there is a clear need for records of handling at the point of touch. What's a BLE beacon?

BLE stands for Bluetooth Low Energy. BLE beacons are little devices about the size of a coin. They emit a signal on a regular schedule, wirelessly.

Pin a beacon to an asset - whether it's a medical supply cart, a worker's toolkit, or industrial machinery - and your receivers are notified. This notification includes where the signal was picked up. So essentially, you've found where that asset is.

Why the "low energy" part is a huge innovation

If we use existing tracking technologies, we either have to change out the batteries frequently, or install physical infrastructure that costs us a lot. BLE beacons don't. They use a single, coin cell battery that lasts anywhere from 1 to 5 years, depending on how active the beacons are.

This dramatically reduces maintenance and makes installing BLE at scale in your facility very straightforward and inexpensive. Real-world benefits In hospitals, staff now spend minutes finding a misplaced cart as opposed to more than 20 minutes.

We all know that GPS is really good at finding things but it does not work very well inside buildings. This is because the signals from the satellites cannot get through the walls of the building. So what is RTLS?

RTLS stands for Real Time Location System. It is a way to always know where things are inside a building. It is like a map that shows where everything is. It gets updated all the time. We can think of it as GPS for buildings but it is much more exact.

How does RTLS work?

We put tags on the things we want to find. These tags send out signals using things like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or special kinds of radio waves. There are devices all around the building that pick up these signals. They use these signals to figure out where the tags are. It is like drawing a map with the tags and the devices. The result is that we always know where everything is and it is very exact.

Where do people use RTLS?

RTLS is used in a lot of places. Hospitals use it to find things like wheelchairs and special machines. Factories use it to find tools and big machines. Warehouses use it to keep track of all the things they have. Even airports use RTLS to find things on the ground.

Why is it so important to know where things are?

Just knowing that something is on a floor is not good enough. We need to know where it is, like which room or which shelf. This is what makes a good RTLS system.

When designing an asset tracking system one of your initial considerations will be how you'll tag your assets. The three main contenders will undoubtedly be RFID, barcodes and QR codes. All three can identify your assets but work in drastically different ways. Here's the breakdown in plain English:

Barcode- Low cost, low tech, and simple Barcodes have been used for years and continue to be popular as they are inexpensive and easy to print and use with virtually any barcode scanner. The catch is that they need line-of-sight scanning, so scanning assets one at a time. If you have a small, static inventory that has slow movement or no turnover it might be the ideal choice. However, for businesses where you have large volumes of fast moving items the barcode becomes quite the time killer.

QR Code- barcode, but on steroids QR codes allow for significantly more data to be stored than a traditional barcode and can be read at any angle with just a smartphone. This could mean if your employees already have a smart phone with them they won't need to invest in any new technology to upgrade from their barcode system to a QR code based system. Like a barcode, a QR code is read manually and therefore does not provide any automation benefits.

RFID- Hands-free, quick and powerful An RFID tag utilizes radio waves to read the tag, negating any need for line-of-sight scanning or manually pointing a scanner. In the simplest explanation one scan of an RFID reader can capture up to dozens of assets in seconds (even through boxes or shelving). An RFID system is the quickest and most accurate solution as it fully automates your asset scanning process. An RFID system does come with a more substantial upfront cost compared to a barcode or QR code based system but for warehouses, manufacturing plants, hospitals etc. That deal with large numbers of assets the initial cost more than pays for itself with increased efficiency.

So how do you decide? It truly depends on your organization's size, budget, and desire for automation. If you have a small inventory and a tight budget barcodes or QR codes would do. If you want the highest degree of speed and automation you should be investing in RFID. In some larger organizations you will see RFID for high value items, and QR codes used for the rest of the inventory.

RTLS – the alternative to outdoor GPS technology. Indoor positioning technology using fixed beacons inside the building.

QoS – the level of service provided by the protocol. 0 = fire and forget. 1 = at least one time. 2 = exactly one time.

Dead Letter Queue – destination point for all failed deliveries instead of letting it disappear into oblivion.

Edge Computing – processing at the device level. Faster notification, reduced network usage, bypasses the need to go back to the cloud.

Telemetry – the streaming of data from the device. Everything from location, temperature, battery status, etc.

Cold Start – the time it takes to acquire satellite signal after powering on a GPS device. It ranges from 30 to 90 seconds.
