In an attempt to revive its old glory, Sony is now reshaping its focus strategy on profiting areas such as video games, entertainment and camera sensors, instead of looking to television or smartphone market where the competition is generating lower margins of return.

The PlayStation VR headset

According to Sony accessories Canada the PlayStation VR headset, Sony’s first major launch since its strategy disclosure in June, is aimed to bring the company back in the competition along with its ability to test one of the most competitive spaces in the industry. The VR headset is fairly placed as compared to its rivals including Facebook’s Oculus and HTC’s Vive.

Sony hopes to lure in customers with its more modest price range and is aiming to put out something well deserved to its 40 million existing users of its flagship console. The headset is also designed to into the Playstation 4, rather than requiring new equipment along with other Sony accessories and Sony Parts.

“Sony is well-positioned to build an early lead in the high-end VR headset race,” market researcher IHS Technology said in a report, forecasting sales of 1.4 million units in 2016.

One for the future

Sony is not only aiming at the present market but is also aiming to consolidate itself in the future market. Andrew House Sony’s gaming division chief said he is already in talks with the media production companies to look for opportunities  for Sony’s VR headset. House also quoted that the company is aiming for the years in future and this is the best time to start with it.

A tough competition ahead

With major players like Facebook’s Oculus and HTC’s Vive, the Playstation is going to face  a tough challenge in the initial days. The fact gets even more serious when major players like Microsoft, Intel are already eyeing on entering the market in the coming years and the competition is going to only increase for the market.

Day by day, more and more people are using Facebook on their smart phones instead of their desktop. When they do use desktop for Facebook, it’s usually because they want to play games.

Facebook is now changing that up by hosting games in its mobile apps and it’s calling them Instant Games. For now the games are from big publishers like Konami, Bandai Namco and Taito as well as newer developers like King and Zynga. The feature includes 17 games and is being introduced to 30 countries including the United States.

Just like Instant Articles, you won’t have to leave the Facebook or Messenger app in order to play games. For now, Instant Games will be free and devoid of any ads. There also won’t be any in-app purchases. So, by hosting free Instant Games, Facebook is sacrificing potential ad revenue.

What this means for publishers is that while they may get more exposure due to Facebook’s gigantic user base, they won’t be able to make money from it. There is also a chance that people will prefer Instant Games over game apps that have ads and in-app purchases. So, the developers have a chance of losing revenue as well.
