HOUSE OF THE DRAGON | S2.E8 - THE QUEEN WHO EVER WAS | S3.E2 - QUEEN'S LANDING
airplanes, bullet trains, doordash, drum n bass, disney fast pass, sonic the hedgehog, speed racer, child labor, short films, f1 racing, replacing cable TV that had long ad breaks with streaming services that have short ad breaks, the fast and the furious, the speed running community, adderall... everything is so rushed, we have lost the art of lingering.
Any time I hear a song that's faster than 33 bpm, it really bothers me because why so fast? It's like they don't even wanna linger on the beats. They just wanna move onto the next musical note and be done already. And this is very similar to fast fashion, if you think about it.
You guys remember when Youtubers made 10-minute long vlogs full of nothing happening because 10 minutes is the length required to be able to monetize a video and shove a bunch of ad breaks in it? Yeah, well YouTube's not around anymore. Tiktok's the only video platform on the internet allegedly. And the creators there aren't incentivized to make their videos ten minutes long no matter even if they have nothing to say for that length of time. And this is bad because long media good and short media bad.
I remember when Over the Garden Wall came out and it was only 10 episodes long, and I said, "Only ten episodes? They didn't wanna linger on this story?" In fact, anytime someone I follow posts a 5 to 15 second long animation and they say, "hey guys, I worked really hard on this, it took several weeks to finish it, I hope y'all like it," I always leave a comment saying, "Um why is this so short though? Seems very rushed. It's like you've lost the art of lingering."
I love this post because every time I go to Wendy's and they hand me my order, I think about how rushed it was and how the linecooks didn't even care to linger on the burger they were making me. But I do have to wonder why the post is so short. The OP could've listed more things that are fast, she could've written a whole book about this, but she didn't. She didn't wanna linger on it for too long.
Lady in drive through had a bearded dragon sitting on her boobs and she held it up and let me pet it. killing myself canceled
art is not my strong suit but this is my best recreation of what i saw when i opened the window. i have to emphasize that she was supermodel levels of gorgeous
its hilarious that people think there is something inherently revolutionary or liberating about sexual desires instead of sexual preferences obviously being shaped by racism colonialism misogyny and class domination and yet you see it all the time on here. probably one of my longstanding least favorite aspects of the culture on this site

I understand how the scene where Jasper attacked Alicent is particularly upsetting—I think this episode was tense the entire time and keeping the audience very close to the grief and horror of violence, and left me much more overwhelmed and shaken than the last episode, which had a more distant perspective on war. That being said, I’m unsure why the main claim I keep seeing is that the scene was unnecessary. Because this is a show about conflict, and Alicent is at the height of precarity in this episode (she has always been vulnerable, but here she is making strong moves to help Rhaenyra and then completely escape her way of being up until now), it makes sense that she would have a version of a “battle” to mark changing tides. That she fights back, escapes, and is believed marks a major difference to every other assault scene that we have seen her endure: she’s had to live this entire time as a victim of statutory and domestic rape without ever getting to name her abuser (Viserys) as such because of his power, she was completely emotionally and politically isolated when Larys violated her, and she could not lash out against Aemond for fear of her plans falling apart or repercussion.
Because of the misogyny of real life that makes it difficult for people to understand or sympathize with victims, the other difference with those scenes is that they’re less recognizable to a broad audience as sexual assault, because it is Alicent’s “duty” to have heirs (fans broadly paint her as manipulative for this, despite being a child at the time), and Larys and Aemond do not go further with her, so one needs to believe Olivia Cooke’s performance and the framing of the scene to recognize that rape has occurred. However, the Jasper scene is VERY recognizable that he intends to take advantage of her precarity and rape her to affirm his own social power advantage as a man. This is a formal narrative choice that emphasizes the importance of Alicent’s subsequent gathering of Heleana and escape attempt, and part of why she is acting “desperately” (as Orwyle points out). This episode had various heavy-handed moments in explaining Alicent and Rhaenyra’s actions, which I think is necessary for an audience who is by default (living under patriarchy) unwilling to grant women characters the various and nuanced motivations that are written into the show.
All of that being said, there are literally other ways that the escalating desperation of Alicent’s situation could have been portrayed. The other thing this scene is doing is moving characters around: Orwyle is disgusted with Jasper and has him imprisoned, which means Orwyle is later willing to sell Jasper out to keep his own head, which means Daemon has a reason to gather the imprisoned nobles and Otto, who then become essential for the major moment of Rhaenyra having to bloodily perform her first act of taking the throne. We are also prepared as an audience for Rickard’s betrayal (since we no longer trust him after telling Jasper about Alicent’s vulnerability), as well as how the internal conflicts within the castle extend far beyond what we have been following so far of Alicent’s change in motivation.
As part of the narrative, it’s a fairly tight scene, and a viewing of it as solely Alicent’s victimization (or worse, somehow her punishment) removes her and the assault from its context. Because of Jasper attacking and Alicent being able to fend him off, and how major events and character moments unfold afterwards, we might see how narratively and thematically crucial Alicent’s personal trials are to the machinations of the kingdom (and the show) more broadly. While it is my position that I would not like to see Alicent put through more SA scenes (I really do think that is a constitutive part of her character and that we have seen enough), I think audiences are more ready to dismiss scenes in which Alicent experiences conflict out of hand, and take more seriously other scenes of gruesome, unnecessary, and heavy-handed violence simply because it matches people’s expectations of how conflict between men is meant to drive a narrative forward.
HOUSE OF THE DRAGON S03E02 — “Queen’s Landing”
Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, First of her name, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Lady of the Seven Kingdoms, protector of the realm.
HOUSE OF THE DRAGON (2022-?) 3.02 | Queen’s Landing
Rhaenyra being unable to hold her own in the bloodshed of Queen’s Landing is a perfect demonstration of the overarching struggle of her claiming the throne. There are plenty of ways in which misogyny prevents her from acting autonomously, as clearly demonstrated in the last episode, but the larger processes of exclusion show up in scenes like this one. She was not born a boy, so she was not given proper training with a sword or as a knight. She is hesitant and clearly out of place, and unable to assert her position as King because of it. She may be different from Daemon for various reasons, but her grief over the beheading is much more a result of materially different upbringings than it is a special case of his viciousness vs. her morality, although it becomes about that, because all that is witnessed is her failure to act, and his swiftness surrounded by loyal gold coats. Because she was not trained for it, she also is more willing to accept alternatives, more willing to stay with the grief and non-necessity of bloodshed, but she will be undermined all the same.
Books were given her, and needles and thread, but her guards said Alicent spent more time weeping than reading or sewing. One day she ripped all her clothing into pieces. By the end of the year she had taken to talking to herself, and had come to have a deep aversion to the color green.
