For a minute, I broke my own rule and allowed myself to go back in time.

Closing my eyes, I let myself think of Scottie and Bailey.

I remembered all the times I’d found them on the couch, watching movies under Blake’s Texans blanket. All the times that they’d chosen to sit next to each other at dinner, lost in their own little world as they whispered and giggled and shared drinks. All the times Bailey had defended Scottie when the rest of us poked fun at her quirks and her clothes. All the times that Scottie’s face had lit up when Bailey walked in the room.

And how it seemed like the light in her eyes had completely gone out after we buried Bailey.

And then, right there on the roof of Chalet Towers, under a dark and stormy sky, I finally figured out what I’d been too dense to see all along.

And then I started running.

It took Blake and Viktor five times to actually have sex in a bed. The first time was in Viktor’s car, the second time was outside near Blake’s pool, the third was on Viktor’s couch and the fourth was on/against Blake’s piano. It wasn’t until encounter #5 when Viktor, fed up with quick, impulsive fucks on whatever surface was nearest, took her hand and took her up to her room, saying that he wanted to take his time with her.

Remember that time Violet got stabbed in the abdomen and she said that Valerie came and saved her? Valerie was basically in, well, a crime lair at the time. She was friends with some other assassins, best friends with an old Russian man with a scar on his face. They were shooting the shit when Violet called and said she was currently bleeding to death and couldn’t dispose of the target’s body like she was supposed to. Violet swore in Russian, then her and her friend went to rescue her sister. On the way over, she explained to her friend that Violet had tons of talent but way too much ego and no discipline. While Val did damage control on Violet’s wound, her friend got rid of the body and Violet offered to split the money with him 50/50 in gratitude.

Kacey likes Star Trek. She’s a casual fan (Scottie and Dean are hardcore fans, my comparison) who got into it basically in her sleep. Kacey sleeps with the TV on (which is mentioned in both books so far) and one of her favorite TV classics channels changed up the lineup and started airing Star Trek in her usual fall-asleep slot. She started listening to the episodes and even started enjoying it. She’d wake up in the morning and look up the ends of episodes until eventually she just started to DVR them and watch them during the day.

Piper loves dogs. It’s one of two things Piper actually shows an interest in. The other is those tower-defense mobile games. She loves all of them, from the really intense RPG versions to Plants vs Zombies. They soothe her. (And you’ll soon learn that soothing Piper is no easy task.)

The Texas Line – Blake, Dean and Flora – actually hang out quite a bit. They’ll go out to eat (sushi or barbecue usually) or order takeout and watch TV, watch sports, watch country music award shows. Dean is comfortable around both of them and was able to speak to both of them without any hesitation. He feels they are kindred spirits.

Scottie is a hockey fan. She supports the Toronto Maple Leafs. Nobody knows why and they’re all a little afraid to ask.

Conor is a little obsessed with Niall Horan. He was his phone background once. He followed him in 1D and he’s following him as a solo artist now. Kacey is very confused by it  but she doesn’t question it. 

Violet and Valerie still dance. Remember Blake’s basement? The padded floor and wall of mirrors? They go down there to blow off steam. Because it reminds them of Bailey, and because it seems to cheer Scottie up, they pick popular K-Pop songs and either learn the choreography or make up their own. But they do it to Top 40 pop songs, too. Violet has a really impressive routine for wRonG by Zayn.

Blake and Scottie are two of the best singers in the group, but Viktor is the most musical. He was going to school for music before deciding he wasn’t good enough and realizing he wanted to be a cop instead.

100% canonically, Lexie Brighton taught herself to speak Japanese by watching anime. Natsumi almost couldn’t believe it when Lexie told her but then, once she got to know Lexie, she totally believed it.

Jojo is slightly Instagram famous. I mean, have you seen her? But it’s not just thirsty men and jealous girls. She’s wicked good at cosplaying and she’s got thousands of fandom kids following her and drooling over the complexity of her costumes.

“Weren’t you a hunter?” Scottie asked, unimpressed with my joke.

“I hunted deer, Scottie. Not bears.”

“What’s the difference?”

“Like five-hundred pounds and a whole bunch of teeth.”

I couldn’t see Scottie’s face in the darkness but, having seen it directed at my so many times, I could imagine her irritated expression.

“I meant what’s the difference when it comes to hunting them.”

“The difference is I can’t outrun a grizzly bear.”

“The average white-tail deer runs 47 miles per hour while a grizzly bear only runs 35. Unless, of course, there’s some sort of super-fast species of bear in Vermont I’m not aware of.”

I stopped walking for a second, pointing my flashlight’s beam at her back.

“You know,” I said, “I’ve really missed our talks.”
