Biography (tw for pregnancy, animal attack, some body horror):
Her boyfriend Rafael had been her sweetheart since high school, wildly proud of his girlfriend's reputation and seven year commitment to her sport. It was the right time for them to try something new, to make their own little pack. And while she had a hard time sitting off skates for the sake of her ego and energy, Theo was looking forward to introducing their child to everything the exciting world had to offer. Things were fine -- exceedingly average, actually, which wasn't something she was used to. Even on the subject of having a baby, Theo wanted to do it right and be the best.
Theodora "Theo" Blackthorn loved her pack -- the Rat City Roller Derby league. In derby, a pack is defined as the highest mixed concentration of skaters on the track -- it is always changing and evolving as players move around, but what never ever wavered was Theo's loyalty to her team. Those girls knew her as Clit Eastwood, a vicious blocker with a reputation for knocking jammers out of bounds and running down their energy before her teammates could swallow them up again. She picked the skate name in reference to all the old Westerns her grandpa would show her when he babysat -- but he didn't exactly find the humor in her choice.
Still, her family -- on skates and off -- was nothing but supportive of her life choices. They supported her when she joined derby in the first place, and they supported her when she and her longtime boyfriend got in a friendly 'tussle' that ended with Theo taking the infamous "nine month injury". Pregnant, in non-derby terms.
Something changed, though, five months into the pregnancy. Far enough for her to be showing. Far enough to know their baby was a boy, healthy and human. But not far enough out of dodge to avoid all complications, especially one with snapping jaws. Life happens as it does, and an unexpected bite from some fucking feral dog on a moonlit night puts her in the ER for postexposure prophylaxis, in case of rabies. It's a big word that means more treatment and extra caution -- and Theo's fucking shaken up for weeks. But the baby is fine, even if her arm looks like a slab of chuck steak under the wraps.
But something changed again. The body adapts to pregnancy in unique ways -- heightened sense of smell, to prevent food poisoning. Aching joints, as ligaments stretch preparing for the arrival of new life. An instinctual connection, a yearning, a bond between mother and child. Shared blood, pumping heart to heart. Things go in cycles, lunar or otherwise. A wild pain set Theo alight as the first transformation took hold, so ferocious she thought she was miscarrying. It was a testament to Raf's love that he didn't leave at the first sight of a wolf in their shared apartment in urban Seattle. It was a testament to Theo's willpower that she didn't maul him by mistake.
There were tears exchanged and shouting and screaming. What sounded self-sacrificing was actually just scared. "Just go, get out, get away from me please," was instead met with patience and the hope that maybe this wasn't the end of the world. It was the barely even the start of their son's life.
Theo tried to pretend things were normal -- and they mostly were, except for around the full moon each month. She couldn't tell what was just a symptom of her human condition and what was a result of the wolf in her now. A sly stranger who must have sensed her fear or her new nature slipped her the name of a small town in Oregon, weirder than Portland by a long, mystical mile. Port Leiry. It wasn't long before Theo was leaving on her own, promising she'd return only if and when it was safe. There was no promise of who or what might return and when, so she told Raf to tell their family and friends whatever he needed to to keep themselves out of scrutiny. She would understand either way.
It was here in Port Leiry she met a number of people willing to extend a hand to help her. There was Ida, the nurse with a knowledge of more... peculiar cases. There was Mordecai, who ran the shelter where she would be staying. And others who called her what she was, what they were too -- werewolf. But that was to say nothing of the baby inside of her, if it was even still a baby at all. And Theo didn't want to be a part of any other pack, if it meant acknowledging the horrible truth. She was sure she'd fix things and leave, to go be back with her real family.
The transformations continued to be harrowing, exhausting her more than the final months of pregnancy would have alone. And the worst came when after a cloudless, moonlit night of whining and whelping in the woods, Theo awoke with the breaking dawn light in absolute agony -- with her son wailing on the grass beside her. She hurried to the hospital, catching Ida on a graveyard shift. She named her boy Diego, a name she'd discussed with her boyfriend even if they never did make the final decision together.
But the complications didn't stop there. Due to the circumstances of her own turning, Diego was technically not a born wolf, but a turned one. Sharing cursed blood in the womb with his mother, meaning the infant was subject to the pains of the moon each month too -- Theo felt powerless to help him as shrieks turned to growls. It was already so hard to determine why a baby was crying. Hunger and hurt went hand in hand for them as the young woman struggled to comprehend the severity of their situation. Diego couldn't walk or talk, and he didn't know what was happening each time he turned into a wolf. She herself barely knew, could barely make sense of what was happening to her when it happened. But she knew her boy, and guarded him fiercely. It would take a village -- or a Port town -- to raise this child. Assuming the rumored hunters didn't try to take him first.
Seven months later, and Theo is striking a balance, precarious as it is. It's all for the baby. Even though she still lives at New Moonlight, she's working as a waitress, adjusting to a life of keen smells, furious strength, and strange impulses. Go-go, as she calls her boy, is teething. They've found some support in the Cerberus pack, but Theo can't bring herself to love them fully yet, afraid that means she's accepting this life and leaving Rafael and her home behind. But it's not as though she can exactly find any babysitter to take a feral pup on full moons, so she's doing the best she can day by day. Night by night.
Theo hopes to get back on skates again soon. After all, according to the rules of derby, destruction of the pack is a penalty.
