The commission found Israel has committed four out of five genocidal acts as defined by the 1948 Genocide Convention

Israel is carrying out a genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, a UN inquiry officially announced for the first time on 16 September, urging states to uphold their obligations under international law to halt the crimes and prosecute those responsible.

“The Commission finds that Israel is responsible for the commission of genocide in Gaza,” said Navi Pillay, chair of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel.

“It is clear that there is an intent to destroy the Palestinians in Gaza through acts that meet the criteria set forth in the Genocide Convention,” Pillay added.

At a press conference in Geneva, Pillay and fellow commissioner Chris Sidoti detailed how Israeli authorities and the army committed four of the five acts defined under the 1948 Genocide Convention: killing, causing serious bodily or mental harm, deliberately inflicting life conditions designed to destroy Palestinians, and imposing measures to prevent births.

The inquiry examined Israel’s military conduct in Gaza, highlighting starvation tactics and “inhumane conditions of life for Palestinians.”
