From the age of six Kerri had looked up to Harley who like Kerri’s older sister was 14 her sister’s BFF, as Harley grew, she grew into the prefect California girl from the song. Harley had thick silky blonde hair that gently flowed down to the middle of deep golden tanned back, The only untanned skin of Harley’s body were the small triangular patches and the thin lines connecting the two on her breast and the one around her hips. The lines left there by the strings the held the small bits of nylon clothe together the comprised what Harley called her bathing suite.
Kerri’s older bother had an interest in Harley as well one that was ignored constantly by Harley. Harley had more than once explained to Samantha Kerri’s older sister that because of how close Samanatha and she were, and the way both of their parents treated two of them that she felt like she was part of Samantha’s family, that Matthew as more like her bother in her mind and heart, and she wasn’t about to date her bother.
It wasn’t until the summer between Junior and Senior year of high school that Samantha would learn the real reason for Harley not having any kind of interest in Matthew her bother. The sort of interest and affections Matthew had and wanted so to share with Harley who wanted to share those same feeling with Samantha.
Samantha was spending another night which generally turned into weekend at Harley’s home it was during another of the “What’s gonna happen after graduation?” conversations. The ones when Samantha would try to convince Harley that she wanted to go to an out os state college of at least one way from home. The few times they had talked about college and or what life after high school was going to be like. Samantha suggested they could be roommates then looking out of the corner of her eye and using a bit sluttish chuckle Samantha said “With us living that close and sharing the same bed…who knows what could happen.” But rather than having a pillow tossed at her by Harley as Harley made some kind of remark back, what Harley said looking somber and sounding like a wishful child sitting legs crossed and the foot of her bed “I know what I would like to happen but…”
Harley began regretting the words as soon as she said them every since Harley became aware of and admitted to herself that she did have feelings for Samantha as well as heart racing carinal feelings. Harley had stated playing her mind the many ways the Samantha could react to finding out that her BFF loved her not just as the girlfriend they were but as a lover both of heart, mind and body. There were not many of ways that Harley had dreamt of where a shocked prolonged silents by Samnatha ended up the way Harley longed for. Still looking as if Harley had just pointed out a ghost or had told Samantha she runs over her dog Samantha spoke “But ?...But what Har?”
Harley was slow to answer her mind thinking of how she had ruined not just her chances to walk the heavenly path of shared love with Samantha. But of how she had ruined the deep friendship they had shared a friendship that was the envy of so many their lives touched, In Harley’s heart and mind there pranced a figure of her uttering the same words she had spoken aloud words that were setting her beautiful memories of herself with Samantha ablaze. In the long seconds Harley’s mental eye watched Harley decided that having destroyed her chance of being happy with Samantha that she should at least while she could fully tell Samantha how she felt.
“But what I would want isn’t what you’d want” Harley said softly sheepishly tears beginning to form in her eyes. AT this moment Samantha could not honestly say if she wouldn’t have or would want more to happen between them then what they had now. Samantha could see the pain of the way she was reacting to Harley’s venture to tell her of the feelings that Harley had kept bottled inside of her for who knew how long. She was first Harley’s friend, her confident she may not be what Harley was hoping for but the feeling she did have with and for Harley couldn’t bare to see this way.
Samantha on hands and knees scrambled the few feet between herself and Harley taking Harley in her arms shhing her among the words of comfort. “Harley shh it is ok I am not mad shh” Harley felt Samantha arms around her body softly pulling her close to offer comfort to her in an attempt to give Harley some kind of emotional footing that they could talk about this from. Samantha felt the warm tail of tears that had begun to fall from Harley’s eyes
Harley turned her head letting the side of it rest on Samantha’s shoulder Harley between the near silent sobs spoke softly “I’m sorry Samantha, you probably hate me now…oh god I am so sorry” Samantha lifted her head turning to face Harley as much as possible “I don’t hate you I could I would never hate you, Harley. How can I hate someone that loves me?” Harley lift her head off Samantha’s shoulder “Really you’re not anger cause I ruined our friendship” Samantha’s beautiful icy clear blue eyes popped open with surprise for the second time tonight both times because of something that Harley said to her “Harley you haven’t ruined a thing I still love you maybe not as much or the way you want but you are still my best friend, actually thinking about I am kind of honored.” Now it was Harley whose face was twisted into mix of confusion and surprise. “Honored...?” Harley asked
“Yea honored,. Honored that you chose to tell me first. Even if you thought I would turn on you end our friendship you told me.” Harley titled her head to the side a bit then pointed out that she hadn’t really told her anything. That she had more or less made Samantha figure it out.
