Lucifer literally calls living on as “protector of this realm” Sandalphon’s penance for the cataclysms like its jail sentence (Paradise Lost: ch. 5 ep. 3). A punishment that, in theory, has no end because archangels are immortal (with a few exceptions) and don’t even get me started on how immortality is a prison in its own right…
