VDL Metal Cushion Foundation EX in A205

Brand: VDL Product Type: BB/Foundation Cushion Skin Type: Normal to Dry, Dry Capacity: 15g * 1 Retail Price: ₩32,000 (for Kakao Limted Case and single refill) | ₩20,000 per refill

I really like this one. First, the EX version is for dry skin so I'm unsure how it performs for normal to combination to oily skin types. But the formula is very moisturising and the finish feels more dewy than it looks (if that makes sense?). It's a semi-dewy finish but with a very nice healthy glow. The coverage is light but can be slightly more buildable with an extra layer - more than two layers can start accentuating any dry patches. It won’t cover active blemishes and/or pigmentation but does a great job at evening out skintone and eliminating redness. A205 is supposed to be an equivalent to the standard #23 - it’s actually a little darker, with a stronger yellow undertone and is a closer match to Laniege’s #23. This is also my first metal cushion (the one where you have to press down and product comes up through the holes) and it took a little getting used to. The first few times I pushes down, so little product came up I was slightly surprised, then I went in a little too enthusiastically and way too much squirted out - I’m still figuring out the perfect amount of force for a single application.

Belif Moisture Bomb Cushion in 23

Brand: Belif Product Type: BB Cushion Skin Type: Normal to Dry Capacity: 15g * 2 Retail Price: ₩34,000 (for case with two refills) | ₩14,000 per refill

For some reason, the shade 21 comes with the option of a yellow or pink undertone but the 23 doesn’t have that choice. As for the actual colour it seems darker in the packaging and when you swatch it, but on my face it’s similar to IOPE’s 23 with deeper yellow undertone - which is why I think it looks darker. For the formula, this is Belif’s first makeup product so I think there is room improvement but it’s not a bad product. It’s not as moisturising as I thought it would be (considering how much I love The True Cream Moisturising Bomb) and the finish wasn’t as dewy as I expected either. It actually wasn’t dewy at all (but wasn’t matte either), more satin-like. When I wanted to touch up during the middle of the day, I found that if you went straight into reapplication, it could easy start looking cakey and needed a spray/mist to help it go on smoother. There’s also a cooling sensation when you apply this, not sure how I feel about that as winter’s here. Also this is minimal coverage, all it does it basically even out your skintone.

eSpoir Pro Tailor EX Cushion in N403

Brand: eSpoir Product Type: BB/Foundation Cushion Skin Type: Normal To Dry, Dry Capacity: 15g * 2 Retail Price: ₩38,000 (for case with two refills) | ₩16,000 per refill

This is my favourite. It’s surpassed my love for the IOPE XP Cushion. I love how light and small the case is, taking up minimal space in my bag. The outer matte black packaging is not as great though, because FINGERPRINTS, everywhere. eSpoir has a choice of eight shades, and I decided to go with N403 - which is a newly released shade - and it matches me perfectly. It’s a shade #23 equivalent but with neutral undertones, rarely seen in Asian makeup. As this is a high coverage foundation formula, rather than BB cream, it offers the best coverage and is the most long-wearing. It’s not exactly a dewy finish, but not really a satin either, more like a healthy moisturised skin finish. If I powder it, it turns into a satin finish which lasts for a good six to eight hours before it needs touching up. I just love the coverage on this with it still looking and feeling natural. You can also build it up with further layers to get better coverage, yet it never starts to feel heavy or look cakey.

Day 1/30: Recent Haul

This was the main part of my Avecko haul which was basically all Aromatica - the Calendula moisturiser and sunscreen along with newly released sheet masks! I love that all their packaging has English on it as well.

Got my mini haul from Dowaja and it arrived in just 6 days with standard shipping! I only got the 3 cushions - VDL, Banila Co and Verite - the rest are samples/gifts (Amore Pacific seems super generous). I don't know which cushion to use first... maybe I should break them all in (but that would mean I have 7 cushions in rotation 😓)

Day 2/30: Oil Cleanser

If there's a product I have too many alternatives of, it's makeup removers. I was going to post my normal holy grails (Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil & Banila Co Clean It Zero) but then thought it might be better to share something with less reviews. So here's the Aromatica Orange Cleansing Sherbet. Things I like, 1) the orange-y citrus smell, 2) it comes in a bigger tub then the usual balms, 3) the texture is a little thicker but still has good slip (and doesn't slide around in the tub), 4) it's not stripping at all and 5) easy to emulsify and wash off. Things I don't like: it's not very good at removing waterproof mascara and eyeliner. The rest of my makeup and sunscreen is easy but the waterproof eye makeup takes an excessive amount of rubbing which I don't like doing in the eye area (and that's only if it comes off).

Day 3/30: Low pH Cleanser

I think I only have a few, my favourite being the Innisfree Bija Anti-Trouble Cleansing Gel. It's got a pH of around 4/5 (if I remember correctly) and although intended to be a first cleanser, we all know it's the worst makeup remover ever, and makes a much better gentle second cleanse. I don't mind the tea tree smell but it might put others off.

Day 4/30: Exfoliant

Most of my favourites are actually Western brands, the AB one I enjoy using the most is VDL Naked Facial Exfoliant but I already talked about that a while back. So here's a different exfoliator I managed to find: peeling gels! Or more specially Mizon Apple Smoothie Peeling Gel. To me, most peeling gels were created equal. I have a slight preference for Ginvera but haven't restocked that one yet. Next best value for money is this one which smells like apples! No I don't not believe all that flaky stuff is skin, but I do like that it brightens the skin and makes a smoother base for makeup.

Day 7/30: Acid Toner

I only have one AB acid toner which is COSRX One Step Pimple Clear Pads. I picked it up after seeing it on Glowpick with high ratings/reviews (seems to be one of their more popular products in Korea) and I use it as a toner because because the pH around 4 and there's only 1% of betain salicylate (if I remember correctly). Plus it has such adorable packaging.

Day 8/30: Vitamin C

There's only one for me and that's BRTC Vitalizer C10 Ampoule. I've probably talked about how much I love this but its effects aren't as quickly visible compared to OST/C20 but the formulation means I can use it daily, there's no stickiness and I believe it's made to be more stable that typical LAA. Something about Blue Phyto Complex. I'm on my fourth bottle already but when it's finished will try my new Klairs Vitamin Drop instead.

Day 9/30: Acid Treatment

COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid is the only chemical exfoliant I'm using right now apart from an acid toner, and the occasional Alpha-H Liquid Gold on lazy nights. Currently, I'm only using the BHA, two, sometimes three, times a week as my skin no longer needs that much exfoliation.

Day 10/30: Retinoid First Essences

Before my full journey into AB, I seriously only had one toner, Serozinc. It's still one of my favourites but I somehow gained an entire extra shelf of toners. You probably all know Nature Republic The First Essence is my favourite but I'm currently trying the Cremorlab Mineral Treatment (hopefully won't be as disappointing as the rest of their stuff) and have lined up the Mizon First Essence and Innisfree Soybean Essence (Light) next. I'm still a little unsure on the exact function and usage of VDL SKIN P+R=O Treatment Essence but it has a super pretty frosted glass bottle.

Day 11/30: Hydrating Toner

This is not all of them... instead I chose a few that I like using for toner masks. Normally when I do toner masks, I start with a 'base' which is either the Muji Light Toning Water or some green tea I've kept in the fridge. I then add extra drops of a thicker toner like Innisfree Green Tea Balancing Skin, Chosungah Wonder Milk or Kohaku hada Moisturising Lotion. Sometimes I'll even add a few drops of facial oil. I also like to use the Peeling Cotton Pads from Muji or the slightly thicker ones from COSRX.

Day 12/30: Sheet Mask

I got a haul about 2 weeks ago which officially put me in the #500club - not sure if I should laugh or cry. I ended up doing a destash (sold some, gave some away) and somehow I'm now back down to about 350.

As there's no way I could choose a single favourite sheet mask, here's my current Top 5. My Beauty Diary Platinum Snail Total Effects Mask, Banila Co Miss Flower and Mr Honey Hydrogel, LJH Vital Firming Hydrogel, Hera Hyaluronic Mask and Aromatica Calendula Soothing Relief Mask... I have such expensive preferences. There's also my #30daysofmasks (yes, I'm still stuck on day 26) if any of you wanted some mini reviews of other masks I've been using.

Day 15/30: Essence

So my essences are actually serums (at least to me) but here are the ones I'm currently using in my routine. There's the Belif Problem Solution Green Essence and A:True White Snow Tea Brilliant Essence. Belif is a seriously amazing serum, I think it even works more effectively than LJH (big statement, I know).

Day 16/30: Serum

As you could see from yesterday, most of my 'serums' are named essences but I generally use them the same way. The only AB product I have that's actually named serum is the Innisfree Green Tea Seed Serum (there's also the Sulwhasoo Activating Serum but that's a totally different product). I use it as a moisturising serum and alternate it with my Superdrug Simply Pure Hydrating Serum.

Day 17/30: Ampoule

I don't really use an ampoule anymore. I haven't really seen any particular long term effects that I can't achieve with serums and I'm always trying to keep my routine as short as possible. But when I do, I normally add a few drops of COSRX Propolis Light Ampule to my moisturiser for an extra boost or when I'm going for an extra dewy finish.

Day 18/30: Emulsion

I'm lazy and don't use emulsions anymore. As I've gotten a more steady skincare routine, I'm all about condensing it, rather than trying to fit everything in. I used to love the light, weightless texture, and I know the AB philosophy is about customisation and layering, but I find its easier to stick to a single cream that works well enough. The only one I still use (that's AB) is the Hera Aquabolic Moisturising Emulsion, when I need a little extra moisture or to help fix dry patches.

Day 19/30: Facial Oil (Day) Moisturiser

When I use a day cream, it has to be lightweight, non-greasy and quick to absorb. Most importantly it must be moisturising enough for my skin and work well under makeup. So this why the majority of AB creams have failed me, most of the time they do one but not the other. Apart from my absolute favourite which is the Belif The True Cream Moisturizing Bomb. This was pretty much the only AB day moisturiser which ticked all my boxes (the others that worked for me were Primera Alpine Watery Berry Cream and Aromatica Calendula Juicy Cream). Then two days I came across this sample of the Verite Ultra Moist Skin Watery Cream which I'm really liking and also seems to fit the criteria.

Day 20/30: (Night) Moisturiser

I rotate between the Dr Jart+ Ceramidin (why did I not buy this earlier, because it's amazing?!) and the Guerisson Complex9 Cream which I mainly using during the winter and fall (I guess I'm one of those in the minority who have no problems using horse oil).

Day 21/30: Sleeping Pack

I don't use sleeping packs unless it's winter. At first they seemed like a nice addition but then I found them to be a slightly annoying extra step that wasn't needed. In the winter I use the Sulwhasoo Overnight Mask and Goodal Anti Wrinkle Sleep Cream - but I finished these a few months back and haven't gotten around to repurchasing (maybe around November). Now the only thing I use as a sleeping pack is the S hara Shara Berry Bomb All in One Ampoule which is a great multitasker.

Day 22/30: Acne Treatment

I don't have a specific acne treatment but here are my trusted products for when I feel a breakout coming on (there are a few non-AB things because it makes more sense when you see them together). So first step is always a Aesop Chamomile Concentrate Anti-Blemish Masque to see if I can calm things down, then it's my COSRX Natural BHA Returning A-Sol which is a daily part of my routine anyway. On the actual spot treatments include Mizon Acence Blemish Pink Out Spot and Payot Pate Grise solutions, along with COSRX and Nexcare spot patches. Then there's my #healgel which use to help scarring and healing (works wonders on bigger spots).

Day 23/30: Sunscreen

I still haven't THE ONE but I like trying different things. First there's Omi Sunbears Super Plus which is a great outdoors sunscreen and doesn't contain alcohol (but takes longer to dry). Then there's my indoor sunscreens, trusty quick drying Kanebo Allie UV Mineral Moist Neo, physical sunscreen Aromatica Calendula Non-Nano UV Protection Unscented and travel friendly sample sizes (so perfect for putting in my bags) of the VDL SKIN P+R=O Brightening Sun Milk which I've recently been enjoying and might even purchase a full size of (not sure what the exact fragrance is though...)

Day 26/30: BB Cream

I love BB cushions, they have seriously been the best discovery for me since starting AB. Here are my current ones: Sulwhasoo Evenfair Perfecting Cushion, Laneige BB Cushion, IOPE Air Cushion XP, VDL Metal Cushion EX, DIY Magic Missha Cushion, Banila Co Seoulish Cushion and my only unopened one which is the Alice in Wonderland themed Verite UV Multi Cushion. The only one missing from the pile is my Hera Ultra Moisture UV Mist - it's in my swim bag, which is still in my car and I'm way lazy to go get it. I also just threw out my Innisfree case as well because I won't be buying refills and nothing else seems to fit in it!

Day 1/30: NARUKO Taiwan Brightening and Firming Mask

So this #sheetmask includes the neck thingy for an added lifting effect. It’s a really good fit (only the mouth area is slightly big) but I’m guessing it's more due to the ear loops which make it feel more tight and sturdy. The mask is soaked in a creamy, creamy essence and after leaving it on for 30 minutes, it feels the same as when I took it out of the package. Once you take off the mask, give it a few pats, the remaining serum absorbs very quickly.

As for results, I’m really happy. It was moisturising, there was some brightening (healthy glow afterwards) and even lifting of the jawline! Though it definitely did not last until the morning (the lifting part). The next day when I woke up, I had really nice skin, much better than normal, and spent a good 15 minutes just looking in the mirror and touching my baby soft skin. Will definitely repurchase.

Day 2/30: CIRACLE From Jeju Citrus Sudachi Whitening Mask

Each mask from the range is slightly different colour - this Citrus was yellowy creamy. The fit was good (again the eyes were on the small side) and I kept the mask on for 45 minutes this time. My skin was super soft and moisturised when I took it off but for a brightening mask I was slightly disappointed that I didn’t get those results. Until the next day. I think I need to use another one of these to confirm my results but I think this is the first mask where I looked better the next morning as compared to when I first took the mask off. I know, it’s weird, but in the morning I woke up with plumper, brighter and glowing skin. While I was brushing my teeth, I kept thinking back on my PM routine to see if anything had been different but this mask was the only new thing for the last few days.

Day 3/30: LOVEMORE White Yeast Whitening Mask

Lovemore is a Taiwanese brand for those who don't know, and they specialise in 'silk' masks. This means the texture is thinner, more flexible, and should fit and adhere to your face better. And it does, really well. Especially that section around your nose where some masks will never stay down. I should say this is not my first Lovemore #sheetmask. I've tried the Pearl Barley & Milk and was super impressed which is why I started branching out. Overall, the results were very similar. Nice fast absorbing serum, tighter/plumper feeling and reduced redness BUT I hated the fake sake smell. I think they were trying to recreate a yeast/fermented wine/sake smell (no idea why you'd do that anyway) and I'm not sure if they succeeded a little too well, or were totally off target. But basically the smell was the only thing that would stop me from repurchasing and luckily they have the Barley mask which performs the same without the smell.

Day 4/30: MOONSHOT Energy Restore Double Mask

Full review here, TLDR; I liked the gimmick of two masks in one, but neither side had a 'wow’ factor. The clay part was only a smidgen stronger than the Innisfree Volcanic Pore Clay Mask (which I found close to useless) and the sleeping mask part was in no way superior to other products I already have.

Day 5/30: SHARA SHARA Real Sauce Strawberry Mask

I’m just incompatible with sheet masks that have the word “real” in them. First it was Tony Moly (I’m Real series), then The Face Shop (Real Nature series), then Innisfree (It’s Real Squeeze series), and now Shara Shara. The fragrance on these are crazy, headache inducing. I only lasted 15 minutes with this mask because it stinks of artificial strawberries. I love strawberries, really I do, but just couldn’t stand any more. And it wasn’t even worth it. There was a slight boost in moisture (basic expectations from a #sheetmask) but there was no other visible effects, not even softer skin. Hugely disappointed by these (because the packaging was so nice).

Day 6/30: PAI Skincare Copaiba Deep Cleanse AHA Mask

Pai is a great range for sensitive skin and I've haven't been disappointed by any of the products I've tried so far. Earlier this year they released a cleansing mask, dubbed by some bloggers to be the Glamglow for sensitive skin, and I immediately went out to buy it. It's one of my new to-go-to's when I want a deep cleansing mask and I would put it second to #Glamglow Supermud for cleansing effect, but first for its non-drying properties.

Day 7/30: LEADERS INSOLUTION Bio Medi-Curing Mask: Calming Dressing

What a mouthful. This one was a little fiddly because it's a one piece hydrogel but the backing on both sides was white (why would you do that?) and as the mask is on the thicker side, it kept sticking back to the paper. Once that was sorted, the fitting was pretty bad. It's... short? As in from forehead to chin but theres also so much... cheek space.

Once I settled in with my Daiso mask, it felt good. It has a slight cooling effect and for the 45 minutes I had it on, I forgot about it because it was so comfortable. It considerably calmed down my redness (my skin is not reacting well to the weather changes) but at the same time it didn't hydrate or moisturise my skin at all. On the plus side, the essence soaked into the skin almost immediately and seemed to help my moisturiser absorb better as well. In future, I'll probably stick to my snail masks for calming.

Day 8/30: SHARA SHARA Gold Label Repescargo Hydrogel Mask

So I thought I'd give Shara Shara another go, this mask actually being a freebie. Positives: it was better than the Real Sauce series. Negatives: most disappointing hydrogel I’ve come across. More positives: the fit and stickiness is really good, it stayed put even when I was chewing gum (it was the middle of the afternoon so no Daiso mask). There was a nice boost of moisture and my skin did look healthier. What I was disappointed with: it didn’t help makeup application at all. Normally when I use masks as a prep before going out, I expect it to help makeup go on smoother, look more glowy, and help other products absorb/sink in better. I didn’t get any of that and instead had to use a primer. It definitely seems the Shara Shara masks are more pretty on the outside and average on the face. The package is a nice green and gold and the two parts were sprinkled with gold specks/flakes which I don’t think does anything apart from make it pretty.

Day 9/30: LOVEMORE Aqua Mask Cucumber Extract and Ceramide Moisturizing Mask

This is not one of those made of silk but the material is equally just as thin. Again, it's soaking in essence but when removed it absorbs very quickly. What I loved most was that instead of just a boost of hydration, my skin felt properly moisturised and it lasted well into the next day (my skin has been extra dry recently). It didn't have too many other effects but I wasn't expecting anything special. There is a bonus cooling effect when you first apply the mask. Only con with all Lovemore masks I've tried is the fragrance. This one is on the better side and didn't deter me from wearing it for over 30 minutes.

  Day 10/30:MY BEAUTY DIARY Platinum Snail Total Effects Sheet Mask

This is my ultimate prep day mask if I have any sort of event or just special day out. It makes my skin look so healthy and gives it this natural glow, at the same time evening out skin tone and reducing redness. Makeup goes on like a dream. The fit is great, the essence absorbs quickly, and I basically have no complaints apart from the fact it costs more than normal.

Day 11/30: MIZON Enjoy Vital-Up Time Nourishing Mask

This is one of 10? 12? of the newly released Mizon sheet mask series, Enjoy Vital-Up Time (have no idea what it's supposed to mean). My previous encounters with Mizon masks have all been rather disappointing (though @snailshark_ reminded me of their hydrogel which is their best so far) so I went into it with low expectations.

And was kinda surprised. I really liked this flavour and it was the best of bunch I tried. The ingredient list is very basic, but it did somehow really nourish and moisturise my skin so it was not only visibly plumper but baby soft for at least the next two days. I guess I should be praising the #avocado

Day 12/30: KLAIRS Rich Moist Soothing Sheet Mask

I remember when I first started using #sheetmasks they were all from My Beauty Diary. I fell in love, bought all the different packs and refused to stray because I believed it couldn't get better. Was I wrong. Once I finally decided to explore the options, I realised it wasn't my love for MBD that kept me using the brand, it was just I didn't know any better. The next favourite I discovered was Klairs. I love that it's a simple cotton mask, thick but not heavy, and will pretty much calm down any redness and irritation I have. The one thing that stops me from using it frequently is the weird fit. The eyes are a little out of proportion and the chin area does not match mine at all. Even though I've moved onto other things, Klairs can always be found in my sheet mask stash and I fall back on it whenever my skin feels irritated and unhappy.

Day 13/30: LJH Vital Firming Hydrogel Mask

I really do not need need to fall in love with anymore #hydrogels, half of my hauls are already spent on a variety of #sheetmasks - but I fail again! Great fit as with most hydrogels, made my skin so soft with visible plumpness, tempting me to continuously poke at my cheeks (I'm weird like that). It also calmed the skin of any redness and evened out my skin tone with a slight brightening effect, giving off a nice healthy glow. I feel these would actually be better used before a big night as part of a prep routine, rather just nightly masking (unless you have the money for it).

  Day 14/30: TOSOWOONG Propolis Sheet Mask

I guess I should start by saying that I'm probably not as impressed as I thought I would be, especially after reading other reviews. It's a great mask, but I'm not sure if I'd repurchase it (especially with all the other sheet masks I have). One thing that put me off was the honey smell. Yes, I know it's a weird reason but I prefer my sheet masks to be as fragrant-less as possible if it's sitting on my face/nose for half an hour. The results were good, redness was immediately calmed down and I looked much more glow-y and bright though it didn't seem to last all the way through to the next morning. I'm probably going to try the other masks first (mainly the Deep Sea one) before I decide if I'll keep buying.

Day 15/30: SKINFOOD Black Sugar Strawberry Wash Off Mask

I'm going to be totally honest and say the main reason I buy this is because of the amazing smell. People say it smells like strawberry jam, I think it smells BETTER than strawberry jam. The smell is so tempting you want to eat it. But don't. You have been warned. It tastes nothing like jam or strawberry. Or anything remotely edible. Anyway, this is an exfoliating mask. You're supposed to rub the sugar bits in and then leave it in your face for 15 mins. I've left it on for a range of times and personally couldn't tell the difference in results if I had it on for 3 minutes or 20 minutes. I find the sugar buts quite abrasive so I add quite a lot of water when I do the rubbing. It smooths out any dry, flaky patches without being too stripping and overall my skin feels much smoother. One thing this mask does not do is clean out pores and those SF's on your nose.

Day 16/30: ILLI Mugwort Calming Mask

Calming and pretty much nothing else. After 30 mins, any redness was gone but skin didn't have any other visible results. It did feel softer which is sort of expected, but nowhere as soft I would expect from a good mask. It doesn't fit my face at all but the cotton is thick so it sits rather well (after being strapped in with a #daiso silicone mask). I don't really have anything else to say.

Day 17/30: EVERCOS Herbal Clinic Ginseng Sheet Mask

Woah, ginseng. If you don't like fragrances, or don't like the smell of ginseng and other herbal medicines, this is not the mask for you because I thought I was in a Chinese Herbal shop for the 30 minutes I had this on. I personally don't mind the ginseng smell, but again, not a huge fan of a heavy fragranced mask sitting on my face. I'm conflicted in the material and fit, it's a rather stretchy type of cotton and you can pull it around (reminds me of Muji Peeling Cottons) but no matter how much pulling I did, the fit still wasn't great. I don't find the results particularly impressive but for the price, it's a more decent hydrating mask for relaxation and just treating your skin.

  Day 18/30: C20 Natural Vitamin 21.5 Enhancing Sheet Mask

I was a little confused on when exactly this mask was supposed to be used so I tried a few different things. First, right after my vitamin C serum as instructed (don't use the C20 serum anymore), another time during my normal sheet mask step which was after normal serums and another time in the morning, replacing the vitamin C step. I don't think I could tell a difference in results? The third time I used it (and this 3 times in the same week) I did notice a nice brightening glowy effect but really, that seemed to come from the repeated use rather than a single use. Otherwise, after a single use its very moisturising and made my skin soft, also made my skin just look a little more healthier (not exactly brightening though). What I didn't like was the fact this mask is DRIPPING in essence. I literally could not take it out of the packet and put it on my face without serum dripping everywhere. And during the 30 mins I had it on, my chin/neck area was a serum waterfall. Basically, just make sure you're not wearing nice clothes when you try this.

Day 19/30: WHAMISA Organic Seeds and Rice Fermented Hydrogel Facial Mask

Probably one of my favourite masks as there are actual visible results, which last well into the next day. I do not suggest this to hydrogel first timers because the material is very thin, very slippery and a general pain to get on your face and until it dries into place, there's quite a lot of slippage (so I suggest a Daiso mask). But it's worth it. You get beautifully radiant skin that's super moisturised and so baby soft. It's also plumper and calmer and simply put, this is what you want to look and feel like after a facial. I do have a few gripes, there's a very strong floral smell (it smells nice but those who can't stand botanical smells might have difficultly) and there's a lot of residue when you take the mask off. It takes forever to absorb and patting it in doesn't help at all. So yeah, prepare to be spending a lot of time with this mask.

Day 20/30: MY SCHEMING Mandelic Acid Brightening Mask

Not my first My Scheming but the first time trying their Mandelic Acid. Like always, the material is thin but soaking in essence. I like to use the backing to help put it on my face. As for results, I think they were a little... strange? Or at least different to what is expected? So basically I got brightening on the 'normal' parts of my skin. My cheek area was nicely glowing but some of the PIH I had along the jaw seemed more obvious/visible than before. The little bits of redness around my nose didn't go, but the rest of my skin looked more even in skin tone (if that even makes sense). Probably just going to have to give this another try.

Day 21/30: AESOP Chamomile Concentrate Anti-Blemish Masque

I think timing is very important when using this mask. If you use it in the middle of a particularly bad breakout, it won't help much at all (and will just dry out the skin) but if you can time it to just before the breakout happens, it's pretty amazing at helping to calm the whole thing down, at times even halting the breakout. I only leave it on for 15 minutes before washing it off because any longer and the clay hardens to the point that excessive rubbing is needed to clean it away.

Day 22/30: INNISFREE Soybean Energy Mask

I thought I'd already done this, but can't see it in the tag. Oh well. I haven't enjoyed many masks from Innisfree but this is really nice to wear, both the thin biocellulose material and actual fit (especially for a one piece) make it more comfortable and I actually didn't want to take it off. This is basically a potent boost of their Soybean Essence (sort of like a first essence) which works really well at brightening and giving it a nice healthy glow. My face also looks a little plumper, and all redness (especially around the nose) is calmed down.

  Day 23/30: CAOLION LTE V3 O-Capsule Moisturizing Hydrogel Mask.

I could be totally wrong, but I believe their LTE V3 range (no idea what it means) is focused on hydration and moisturising - there are four sub categories within: Radiance, Pore (not to be confused with their 'Where is pore?' line) Mucin and O-Capsule. Normally ingredients don't interest me too much, but this had a few things that stood out. First it's 10-free including alcohol and triethanolamine but the main active ingredient is dry-frozen #hyaluronicacid along with a cocktail of different types of water. It has me curious. It's a hydrogel, so two pieces and you have to remove the eye and lip slots. First thing I noticed, it's quite thick. The fit was amazingly perfect, the material itself was so comfortable and had a nice cooling effect but the only problem seems to be that the thickness meant it didn't totally adhere to the face if you weren't lying down (or using a Daiso mask). I left it on for 30 mins and you could tell the top layer of the hydrogel was starting to melt into the skin and was significantly thinner than when I started and any remaining serum on my face absorbed in a few light pats. Results time, this didn't feel as moisturising as I thought it would be and touching my face, I was disappointed it didn't feel baby soft. But looking in the mirror, was a different story. My skin looked really refreshed and healthy. It looked really plumped up, moisturised and redness had all gone. The two pimples I had didn't diminish in size but with the redness controlled they immediately looked much smaller. Probably going to end up spending more money trying the other masks now.

Day 24/30: VDL Naked Facial Exfoliant

Does this count as a mask? Well I use it as one. This is actually an exfoliater but one of the methods of using it is to leave it on as a mask for a few minutes. I like this as a nice pick-me-up for mornings when my skin feels a dull or tired, or just needs a little boost but there's no time for a proper mask. There are small grains (oatmeal, I think?) which is super duper mild when you start to rub/wash it off and mixed with water, are not abrasive at all. It reminds me of the Skinfood Black Sugar Strawberry Scrub but more suitable for sensitive skin, better ingredients, and on the opposite scale of the fragrance department - this is pretty much fragrantless and smells of nothing.

Day 25/30: AROMATICA Calendula Soothing Relief Mask

I still have a bunch of masks I haven't tried or wanted to write about but I'm impatient and wanted to try these Aromatica ones first. What attracted me to these the most was the ingredient list, not only does it not start with the typical water, butylene glycol, glycerin... but the first ingredient isn't even water! The first two ingredients are actually calendula extract (76.5%) and aloe vera. The mask itself is cotton, but it's not too thick that it feels heavy, and not too thin that it flaps about. It has a fairly comfortable fit (as good as cotton masks can get) and though there is a lot of essence, it does not drip down along the chin (huge plus). There are also eye flaps which I don't really like because I never put them to use.

After leaving it on for 30 minutes my face looked very refreshed, just like I'd gotten a full nights sleep - a little weird as I was only just about to go to sleep - but it was very soothing, very calming and wasn't irritating at all. Once I took it off, my skin was nice and soft but I didn't actually see much in visible results. It was in the next 10 minutes after I removed it that all my redness calmed down and skin tone looked evened out. I think this will work very well for even the most sensitive skin types because I have a small scratch along my jaw from playing with my little cousin and applying some lotions sting, but this mask didn't at all.

Day 26/30: FARMACY Hydrating Coconut Gel Mask - Soothing (Kale)

This is a non-AB brand but I was able to get my hands on some even though it's only stocked at Sephora. This is basically a one piece hydrogel mask - in this case coconut gel - and it seriously performs exactly the same as the LJH Vital Firming Hydrogel down to the cooling effect (and the price point is similar too). Or at least the Soothing one does as I haven't tried the others yet. It calmed my redness and blotchiness and gave me a really nice healthy glow.

Day 27/30: ARIUL 7 Days Mask (Avocado)

First, I have no idea why they are 7 day masks, are they designed to be used 7 days consecutively? Because if so, they don't get sold in batches of 7 which is weird. Either way, I did incorporate it into my daily routine for a week. And like my previous attempts at daily sheet-masking, four days in, and my skin couldn't take anymore as it started getting irritated. But I was super impressed with the results from a single use that I do have a bunch of these when my skin needs a quick extra boost. I really liked the hydrating and brightening boost from these, it just made my skin look like it was having a really good day. I don't believe sheet masks are able to shrink pores, but they did look a lot less visible after 3 days of masking (which could have been another product but, I don't know). These are cheap, have a reasonable fit, my only problem being their availability.

Day 28/30: ACWELL Rice Whitening Mask

Woah, this mask is some crazy thick cotton. I feel like it's a little too stiff to stay on my face and definitely needed my Daiso mask to keep it from falling off. There was minimal dripping, I'm assuming because the mask is so thick it sucks up all the liquid. It make me question how effective it can be, and if enough of the serum even leaves the mask to go onto my face. But it did give me the absolute basics: some nice hydration and my skin was soft but no whitening/brightening as claimed on the package. And, yeah, not much else to say about it. I don't remember a strong fragrance (I was too busy playing around with the fit) so I don't think there was one...

Day 29/30: DEARPACKER Royal Black Tea and Black Rose Hydrogel Mask

I got a bunch of Dearpacker stuff recently when I saw the packaging - pretty packaging is my ultimate weakness. Yesterday I showed a picture of the wash-off mask and this is the matching hydrogel. The hydrogel itself is a light yellow-ish colour to mimic tea and there are sprinkles of tea leaves - I look kinda stupid with black bits all over my face but the whole thing is super pretty. There wasn't too much of a fragrance but I did think there was a very faint rose/flowery smell. Nothing headache-inducing. I find the results very similar to the Banila Co Honey and Flower hydrogels. It just does something for my skin: partly plumping, partly heathy glow and just super duper soft and bouncy skin.

Day 30/30: DR. JART+ Ceramidin Sheet Mask

I have totally fallen in love with my Dr Jart Ceramidin Cream (and Liquid) so when I saw these newly released sheet masks, I knew I had to get them. I made an Avecko order pretty much immediately.

The mask, which purifies and moisturizes the skin, enables the user to receive spa treatment at home by providing its sophisticated 2-step treatment. Step 1: Purify. The clay mask purifies and shrinks the pores. Step 2: Restore. The moisturizing sleeping gel mask makes the skin smooth and elastic.

I'm always on the lookout for an AB dupe for Glamglow's Supermud (spoiler: still haven't found it) so clay masks always appeal to me. The potentially travel and luggage friendly packaging and design was ultimately what appealed to me.

  First Impressions

As for the actual delivery, rather than samples, it came with a lookbook/catalog of their products and how to achieve certain makeup looks. Samples aren't that important to me right now (it's always nice, though!) so I don't mind the self-advertising, the glossy cards would also make nice postcard pin ups.

Moonshot packaging leans on the simple and minimal side, with their skincare range packaged in baby blue and pink-ish. It sounds terrible, but looks more impressive in real life because of the muted tones. The mask comes in a sturdy plastic jar which weirdly out-of-sync with my other jars. The diameter is fairly big and takes up a little more space which is why it's still just sitting on my desk rather than a place on the shelf.

I was a little surprised that it didn't come with a spatula (which should be the norm) but it doesn't make much of a difference for me as I have so many lying around. The inner lid indicates which side is which, but the white stifff clay side is 'purify' and the orange-ish gel is 'restore'.

  Usage & Performance

How To Use: Apply Step 1 PURIFY, a fine layer to clean, dry skin, avoiding the eye area. Leave for 5 minutes or until completely dry. Rinse off. Apply Step 2 RESTORE to cleansed face. Use once or twice a week for radiant skin.

The first thing that caught my attention was that the second step was not a wash off mask, and is instead advised as a sleeping pack. This brought on a slight dilemma because I wasn't sure how exactly to fit this into my routine. I mean, no one does a clay mask and then goes to straight to sleep, right? So, I took the mask for a test drive, using three different methods, each with it's own mini review below.

The first was part of my PM routine. I used the clay mask in between my double cleansing steps, finished the rest of my routine, and used step 2 as a sleeping pack. I waited for the clay to dry, about 10 minutes, and it was quite easy to wash off. No need for excessive scrubbing/rubbing. I saw an improvement in my pores as they seemed smaller/cleaner but it was pretty short lasting and by the time I finished by entire routine, the area on and around my nose looked much the same to when I started. The sleeping pack felt nice and cooling upon application and absorbed fairly quickly. When I woke up, my face did feel plumper and soft but I probably get the same, if not better results from my current sleeping packs.

Another thing I noticed while applying the sleeping pack was how much less I needed compared to the clay part. Both sides are equal (and I'm assuming are 50ml) but I can see myself finishing the clay side a lot earlier.

The second try was part of my AM routine. I would use both steps 1 and 2 as wash off masks, followed by normal cleansing and the rest of the routine. To tell the truth, the results weren't that different from the first time but I did notice makeup seemed to go on better, and the finish was smoother/more natural.

The third attempt, was sort of as instructed. I returned home in the afternoon, removed my makeup with an oil cleanser, did the clay mask and followed it up with a sleeping pack which I didn't rinse off. I then had an afternoon nap before going out to dinner, and did my evening routine like normal. Again, the clay part of mask yielded the same results; instantly cleaner pores, then back to normal fairly quickly. However, as this was my third time using this mask within the same week, I can say the SF's on my nose have noticably reduced. I don't think it's specifically this mask, as most cleansing masks would have the same sort of effect after accumulative use.

  To Buy, Or Not To Buy

Probably not. I liked the gimmick of two masks in one, but neither side had a 'wow' factor. The clay part was only a smidgen stronger than the Innisfree Volcanic Pore Clay Mask (which I found close to useless) and the sleeping mask part was in no way superior to other products I already have.

Where To Buy

TOSOWOONG Tea Tree Natural Pure Essence

I’ve only tried their Enzyme Powder Wash (which was my favourite during my powder cleanser phase) but having heard good things about the brand, both affordable and suitable for sensitive skin, I thought I’d try something different. I got some masks but as my LJH Tea Tree 90 Essence just so happens to be finished, I thought I’d use this as replacement to see how things go. Only been using it for three days so far and no problems so far - though I’m in the later stages of a huge hormonal breakout from last week. It’s a thicker, more gel-like texture that comes in a pump, transparent, very neutral fragrance and nothing else to really report yet.

VDL SKIN P+R=O Treatment Essence

I’ve been increasingly curious about VDL skincare products and I couldn’t help myself when I saw this on offer. Retail price is ₩40000, so around $40, or up to $50 on most English sites, but I got it for $15 (or $17.5 if you count shipping). It’s advertised as a water essence so I’m actually still trying to figure out what step in my routine it would fit… Not my first essence because this has no fermented stuff, maybe a hydrating toner step instead? I’ll figure it out eventually after I finish admiring the glass bottle.

  DR. JART+ Ceramidin Cream and Liquid

These two had been on my to-buy list for ages. There are many positive reviews out there but I was always a little hesitant because of the price, so when I saw it on offer, I couldn’t control myself (this is a recurring, long-term problem). I have mild rosacea so I will take all the ceramides I can get and cannot wait to start trying the cream first. Plus I still need to figure out where in my routine would be the best fit for the Liquid.

SHARA SHARA Berry Bomb All-in-One Ampoule

I got sucked in by the packaging. Jam, anyone? Then stayed for the ingredients. Looking forward to adding more antioxidant properties as that seems to be slightly lacking in my current routine. There’s a distinctive lack of any berry smells, or any fragrance really, which I’m conflicted about. One on hand, I was secretly hoping it might smell like Skinfood’s Strawberry Wash Off Mask but at the same time I prefer my products fragrantless. Because my Honey AIO took me months to get through, I thought I’d start this as a sleeping pack for the first three nights and I think my skin is a little glowy-ier (is that a word?). I’m not sure, it just looks good overall. Just like the Honey AIO, when you try to use it generously (aka trying to slather it on) it gets a little sticky and doesn’t absorb quickly enough before I go to sleep, might be because the texture seems to be a little thicker and more jelly.

  MIZON Skin Power Original First Essence

With people saying that Nature Republic’s First Essence may be getting discontinued soon, I thought I’d start looking at some alternatives. I really hope it’s just being reformulated or rebranded again because it’s pretty much my HG first essence. I was browsing through the Mizon section (which one does at RRS) and saw this first essence - just $14 and free shipping! While this one has niacinamide, it doesn’t have licorice root extract as compared to the Nature Republic (and old Missha formulation) but it seems like a good place to start.

INNISFREE Soybean Essence (Light)

Another first essence alternative to try just in case Nature Republic does discontinue their First Essence. I tried a sample of the normal Soybean Essence months ago (I think it came with one of my bigger Innisfree hauls) and while I didn’t see any immediate improvements - not that I expect it - it didn’t break me out either. I’m a fan of Innisfree so the only thing that stopped me from purchasing the full size was price (not that expensive but Nature Republic was still cheaper) and also the consistency (it was slightly thicker than I prefer). This Light formulation basically negates the problem while increasing the ferment to 94%. Looking at the ingredients list, it doesn’t have niacinamide or licorice root extract but it’s short and simple (always good), with (probably a miniscule dose of) lactic acid.

  HERA Aquabolic Moisturizing Emulsion

This is actually my first Hera skincare product. I love both the BB cushions that I’ve tried, UV Mist and Ultra Moisture (still debating if I should try the Age Reverse) but never really felt the need to try their skincare. I guess first was the price, I don’t mind expensive products but don’t want to end up spending money on products that I don’t know enough about, which is the second problem, because accessibility to the actual products, information and reviews as well as explanations to all the ranges was limited. This caught my eye as I was mainly aiming to switch up my summer routine and wanted to find a moisturising enough emulsion that could be used in the evenings.

MIZON Snail Repair EX Cream

A new and improved snail repair cream? Sort of? The All-in-One Snail Repair Cream (which is really more of a whipped essence) is still available so this product is not there to replace it. I think it’s more of a moisturiser this time but can’t confirm because the jar is sealed and I can’t see anything inside. The snail percentage I believe is the same as the AIO but it’s fermented snail instead! Fermented snail secretion should absorb better, so hopefully we'll see even more snail improvements?

  MOONSHOT Energy Restore Double Mask

When Peach and Lily had a flash sale (where they sold one of each item) I was intrigued by this Moonshot mask. Moonshot is a fairly new brand that seems to be more focused on makeup but do have a basic skincare range as well. I liked the idea of a 2-in-1 mask which seems travel friendly plus it was half clay mask so those always intrigue me.

I’ve only tried it once so far (need to do a few different trials because the second step is instructed to be used as sleeping pack) and haven’t been impressed. Not to write off early, but it’s probably going to be another AB cleansing mask failure (and I’m never going to find an AB Glamglow dupe/alternative).

MUJI SKINCARE Toning Water (Light), Cleansing Gel Cream & All-in-One Essence High Moisture

Muji recently relaunched their skincare range in the UK (it’s currently a Selfridges exclusive, found at their counter on the lower ground floor) and I immediately made a trip on my way to Uni. I’ve actually tried a few of the products - two toners, one was a mist and their moisturiser in a jar - when I was in Hong Kong and found them simple but effective. I’ve purchased the toner which makes a great base for DIY masks along with the Cleansing Gel Cream and All-in-One Essence (instructions say to use a cherry size amount, not pea or walnut, cherry sized) from the High Moisture range.

I live in the UK so ColourPop doesn’t actually ship to us (yet?) but I got my cousin in Canada to send me some stuff over as I got tired of waiting. Haven’t been through everything but I’m impressed with the quality considering the price. I got a lot more of the eyeshadows as I have a crazy number of lipsticks that I don’t use anyway.

When it’s summer I like to change up a few products in my PM routine so instead of using a heavy night cream (Guerisson 9 Complex Cream), I’ll be using an emulsion followed by the Berry Bomb which acts as both a moisturiser and sleeping pack.

NARUKO Taiwan Magnolia Lifting & Whitening Sheet Mask

During my recent sheet mask restock I wanted to get some Naruko Raw Job's Tears Whitening Masks (weird, tongue twister-y name) which I tried at my cousin’s house and fell in love with, but they were out of stock. Sad face. I still wanted some Naruko masks and decided to go with these instead because they had that chin/neck thingy I really wanted to try. And I like!

SULWHASOO Evenfair Perfecting Cushion

I did my research, read reviews, compared swatches and after seeing nearly every person say it works great dry skin (a dewy finish comparable to IOPE), I bought it. To be honest, I was a little disappointed because my experience is that it works nowhere as well as IOPE on dry skin. I mean, real dry skin. I’m guessing Korea has a different standard for ‘dry’ skin because when I was trying moisturisers, so many were targeted at dry skin yet turned out unless on me and were definitely more appropriate for normal, or normal to dry skin types. However, this makes it my perfect summer cushion as I’m slightly less dry, the shade is ever-so-slightly darker than IOPE #23 and the finish isn’t actually dewy… more like satin-ish. Basically perfect for summer.

My empties this month is about 80% of my current routine, the LJH essence is just one of them. I had a big breakout at the beginning of the month (probably due to stress and exams) but since then with religious use of the LJH Tea Tree Essence and COSRX Natural Returning A-Sol twice a day, I've managed to clear up my skin and prevent any other breakouts (still have the occasional hormonal pimple); but so much better than what I used to be dealing with.

INNISFREE Gel Pencil Liner in #9 Brown Suitcase

This now my everyday liner. The colour is great, there is a little glitter but it's nothing overbearing and doesn't really stand out unless someone's staring right at my face. What I love most is the smooth, creamy and easy application. It's easy to smudge but once it sets, it STAYS. One thing I don't like is that you have to sharpen it (separately) and because you need a nice pointed tip, I feel like I'm wasting product with all the sharpening. I'll most likely go back to my CLIO Gelpresso Waterproof Pencil Gel Liners even though they don't have the exact same shade.

CHARLOTTE TILBURY Light Wonder Foundation in #5 Medium

As I was doing some decluttering I came across this foundation and pretty much have no memory of buying it. Since I've been using it daily. I like this because of how un-foundation like it is. The light coverage (build-able to medium) means it works more like a tinted foundation/BB cream but has a dewy-like finish.

GROWN ALCHEMIST Vanilla and Orange Peel Hand Cream

Just my hand cream of the moment (which was a freebie/sample). I love the simple vanilla smell which is a nice change from the strong overpowering ones from L'Occitane. Also like the minimal black packaging which again, is a nice change from all the flowery ones.

  About The Product

Formulated with 90% saccharomyches ferment, this undiluted essential essence makes the skin clear and transparent.

Here's the promotional poster and from what I understand, this is a repackaging (including new improved formula) of their previous first essence, The First Number One Essence. The main difference - apart from the branding - seems to be the increase of saccharomyches ferment from 87% to 90%, and the inclusion of orange water from Italy and a few minor ingredient changes.

  First Impressions

So I've tried a few first essences before including the two most popular options; SKII which had average results but you'd think with the price tag it could at least smell better, and Missha's which I think broke me out (I was sad for days because I'd heard so many good things about it),. Other's I've tried were the Hera Cell Essence and Primera Miracle Essence. Both of which were great but I wanted to find something more budget friendly. What attracted me to try this essence (ahead of the Secret Key and Goodal versions) is that it was featured on the Korean beauty show, 'Get it Beauty'. I should be forbidden to watch that show because every single time I seem to find something new to buy.

Onto the packaging, and I really like that they kept it simple. The bevelled effect (hard to photograph) comes off as sophisticated and the colour scheme helps boost their natural/organic image. An added bonus is that the ingredients and basic information can be found in English (whoo!).

Like all the other first essences I've come across, this comes in a frosted glass with a slight green-ish colour - the liquid itself is transparent. There's a twist cap (even the font used for the hangul is pretty) and product is dispensed through a small hole.

The texture is just like water and I'm not good with scents, but there's a very subtle smell, sort of floral-ish but it's not overpowering or lingering at all. In fact, I quite like the freshness of it.

  Usage & Performance

How To Use: For the first steps of skin care, dispense liberally on a cotton pad and apply it to the entire face.

If we have a look at the graphic explaining the steps, they should be as follows: Essence > Skin (Toner) > Emulsion > Ampoule > Cream > Eye Cream

As this is a first essence, it should be used right after cleansing, with the exception being 'actives' - vitamin C/AHA/BHA/retinol. Those would need to go on bare skin first and after a 20 to 30 minute wait, the 'hydrating' part of the routine will start with first essence.

Because the hole is quite small and the amount of product can be controlled, I empty a little onto my fingers and pat onto my face instead of wasting product on cotton pads. It's quick to absorb, leaves no sticky residue and you can use your next product right after. For the first month, I followed it up with a hydrating toner, Secret Nature's Moringa Seed Toner, and for the second month I skipped the toner to see if this could work as a replacement and help shorten down my routine. Comparing the two months, there wasn't much of a difference so I was happy to remove the hydrating toner as this product has the same effects.

Does it live up to it's claims? I think, yes. However, it requires patience. Within the first few uses, I could immediately tell there was reduced redness right after application but it would only last a short while. As the two weeks progressed, the longer the reduced redness stayed, and slowly my skin gained this radiance (otherwise know as the 'transparent' skin).

Sometimes I'll give up on products when I can't see anything happening but it took me at least two weeks to see the gradual effect so don't expect miracles but this product does work for hydrating the skin, making it feel softer upon touch, and an overall healthier glow and complexion.

However, for those who are looking for something that helps with acne scarring or pigmentation, I don't this product will deliver those results. It also won't help if you're having an active breakout - well actually, it makes no difference at all - no accelerated healing but at the same time it won't aggravate the breakout.

  To Buy, Or Not To Buy

I love this product and will carry on repurchasing (I'm already near the end of my second bottle). It's a reasonable price and though subtle, I can see the improvements. I'm a product junkie so I'll be honest and say there are two similar products I would like to try first; Cremorlab's Mineral Treatment Essence and the Innisfree Soybean Energy Essence (both more expensive) but until I get around to it, this will be a product that stays in my routine.

BRTC Vitalizer C10 Ampoule

I was previously using the OST C20 Vitamin C Serum and though I loved the results it just wasn't suitable for me because of how unstable it was, and my sensitive skin could only take it every other day. Though this BRTC serum has a lesser concentrate of pure vitamin C (10%) it's supposed to be a lot more stable because it uses the bio-polymers method (science is not my forte). So not only am I able to use it nightly, it hasn't dried out my skin at all, even including the 30 minute time after. The results took a little longer to show if compared to the C20 but I don't mind because after two weeks of continuous use, my skin is already experiencing the same benefits (lightening of acne scars, generally healthier glow) and on the plus side, the serum is still clear as day as nowhere near oxidising.

OSKIA Renaissance Mask

Tried and tested, this is my go to brightening/pick-me-up mask before I have any big events, or just need to look a little more refreshed. The skin looks more radiant, feels baby soft and pores look less visible. There are natural fruit acids and also lactic acid which are chemical exfoliatants that give it that extra boost though it's still suitable for sensitive skin.

COSRX Centella Blemish Cream

I'm torn between whether I love this or not. It made my favourites because mostly importantly, it does as advertised. What I disliked was the very thick texture, applying too much gives a white cast like sunscreens, and rubbing too much makes it pile off. But it really did help with reducing redness from blemishes and also speeding up the healing process of newly popped pimples. This with my HealGel Intensive made everything heal up twice as fast with minimal scarring.

LA ROCHE-POSAY Serozinc

I used to be a devoted follower of the Serozinc, half the excitement was trying to get your hands on it in the UK. But since I started focusing more on incorporating Asian products into my routine, I slowly forgot about this toner - too busy trying all the new shinies. Now I'm fairly happy with my routine, I've decided to add some of my old favourites back into play (mainly because it makes them more accessible). This is a light, fragrant-less, refreshing toner with zinc-sulfate in it and helps with blemishes and soothing the skin; even more suitable to use with the upcoming warmer weather.

SO'NATURAL All Day Tight Make Up Setting Fixer

This was also from my latest Avecko haul and is basically a super lightweight makeup fixing spray. I was using Too Cool for School's Perfect Day Makeup Fixer but I couldn't find it in stock anywhere and wanted to satisfy curiosity as this was placed higher on Get It Beauty's Blind Test. I would say it's up there with the Urban Decay All Nighter, or at least very, very close (I haven't actually put them to test).

BAREMINERALS Complexion Rescue Hydrating Tinted Gel

Tinted moisturisers are another one of those products I love buying (and never finishing) so I caved and got this (technically free because I Have enough Boots points). Since then, I've pretty much been using it every day. It doesn't dry out the skin, it evens out the skin tone and provides a great no-makeup look, and you feel like you're giving your skin a breather.

INNISFREE No Sebum Mineral Powder

The uses for this is limitless but I've recently been loving it to help my hairline when it gets oily/sweaty after the gym. And any other oiliness that comes from spending too long in the sun. There's a newer version called the No Sebum Blur Powder which is basically the same thing but the powder has a slight tint.

  About the Brand

After some quick research it turns out that The Skin Lounge is a recently founded independent brand that focuses solely on sheet masks. The unique point is that it's actually based in Madrid though production seems to be in Korea where they are said to have a store in Seoul - which seems to be the smart thing to do if they're targeting the sheet masks industry - but I couldn't actually find it through Google.

Another twenty minutes on the internet and I've basically come to the conclusion that The Skin Lounge is a Spanish brand, targeting the European market and is using Korean sheet mask technology and production to help them as a selling point.

As it's targeted towards the European market, they were super easy to find and were easily accessible to me through BeautyMart (London). Their current range offers four different sheet masks; three cellulose ones and a hydrogel one. A pack of three cellulose ones (called the Seoul Trio) is priced at £18 and the single hydrogel is £7.50. To me, that seemed a little overpriced. Though you do have to take into consideration, these are made in Korea and they are not the normal paper/cotton type sheets but rather part of the newer generation of hydrogels and cellulose.

But there was no way I was going spend over £20 for 4 sheet masks, from a brand I knew nothing about.

So... I got them at a store in Madrid instead. It just so happened I was attending a wedding and went to do a little shopping. I ended up with a set of 8 (2 of each) for €30 (which equals roughly £20) which seems much more reasonable at just over £2 each. Plus the packaging was so pretty, I couldn't resist.

First off, the packaging of the Seoul Trio reminded of My Beauty Diary, even the size of them are the same (slightly smaller packaging compared to the normal mask). It's simple, sophisticated branding - the pretty pastel colours and how they all match look great - which I think is smart as the European market tends to sheer away from cutesy looking brands. The whole thing came in a box, nicely wrapped and would actually make perfect gifts. All ingredients and instructions can be found in English and Spanish, and there's not even a word of Korean in sight - apart from the brand name.

One of the things they mention frequently in the descriptions and on their site, is the Fit-Pro technology. Most of the time, sheet masks never fit well for my face (the eye holes are too small, the mouth area is too big) so I'm super interested in seeing how these fit, and will they be any better.

  For the cellulose masks, the COSDNA analysis comes back pretty clean with only triethanolamine (pH adjuster) and carbomer (emulsifier) flagged - both of which are commonly seen in sheet masks. The hydrogel mask has two potential acne triggers, both flagged with a 1: butylene glycol and dimethicone. You may have noticed butylene glycol is not present in any other masks, so if that's an ingredient you steer clear of normally, these might work for you.

With the ingredient list, they also make a point about being paraben free (it's bolded and in capitals) but that does not mean preservative free as they use phenoxyethanol.

Potential spoiler alert but my favourite mask is the one with niacinamide in the top three ingredients.

  USAGE & PERFORMANCE

Let's start with the Hyaluronic Hydrogel Mask first. Me and a friend did this one together on the flight back (I didn't want to seem like the only weird one!). We have... conflicting opinions. The only thing we both definitely agree on, is that hydrogels will always be a pain to put on and no one likes doing it.

I tried to get a clearer picture of the texture but this hydrogel is slightly thicker than the ones I'm used to (Whamisa, Innisfree, Banila Co). It has a white-ish tint and rather than being smooth, it's patterned/ribbed. However, it doesn't feel any heavier when placed on the face.

So this is where my friend and I have a difference of opinion. I thought it fit pretty well. Not fantastic, but the eye area was nice and big and there was no slipping/sliding around. She on the other hand, had difficultly keeping it in place as every time she spoke the mouth piece would start moving and she couldn't get it to fit around her mouth properly to start with - the space between the mouth and nose was too small so her bottom lip was also covered by the mask.

We also had different visible effects, and even though hers didn't fit, you could see a noticeable brighter complexion after using it. I personally didn't really see any differences but could feel there was definite hydration, my skin was super baby soft with a slight tighter pull.

  The Seoul Trio set has lots of essence in the pack but when you take them out, it's not exactly heavy or weighing down much. The fit was great. I don't think I've ever put a sheet mask on as fast or as comfortably. I don't know if it's really because of the Fit Pro technology or maybe it's just sized differently as it's made with the European market in mind.

The mask itself is very thin and feels comfortable on the skin so I had no problem keeping them on for around 40 minutes. I have tried this with and without the Daiso Silicone Mask, and both times I was able to speak and move comfortably.

I wouldn't say they were outstanding but all three types of masks gave hydration and softer skin that lasted all through the night. I couldn't really see or feel any difference between the Firming and Hydrating masks, not that I would have expected anything from a single use firming mask but my personal favourite was the Pearl Brightening. Maybe it's because the niacinamide is higher up the ingredient list, but almost immediately my skin had a brighter complexion and it only got better the next morning. I woke up with no redness in the cheek area like I normally do, and my skin has this sort plumpness to it. I would say the results are nearly comparable to the BANILA CO Miss Flower & Mr Honey Hydrogels.

  To Buy, Or Not To Buy

Based on the price in the UK, no way would I repurchase. The Seoul Trio was nice but the hydrogel was a disappointment for me. I do like that they are easily accessible but again, not worth the price.

The only one I would repurchase is the Pearl Brightening, and even then I'll probably wait until my next trip to Spain (or other European country selling them).

  AM ROUTINE

0.5 Exfoliation / Mask

Sometimes my skin needs an extra pick-me-up so I start off with some exfoliating. Depending on how much time I have, the quickest method is to use a peeling gel which is gentle enough for daily use (I like the MIZON Apple Smoothie Peeling Gel or GINVERA Exfoliating Marvel Gel with Green Tea) or a wash-off scrub like the SKINFOOD Black Sugar Scrub Foam or OSKIA Micro Exfoliating Balm.

If I have more time I will use a mask according to my needs. If it's for exfoliating I have SKINFOOD Black Sugar Strawberry Mask Wash Off or on days I don't want to rub my face, VDL Naked Facial Exfoliant. Cleansing masks include GLAMGLOW's Supermud Cleansing Treatment (HG!) and Dualcleanse Treatment also a new product I'm currently trying, PAI's Copaiba Deep Cleanse AHA Mask. If I just want a brightening effect, OSKIA's Renaissance Mask is my go-to.

1. Cleanse

For the morning, I like to keep things simple; so a quick splash of water (to wake me up than anything) followed by micellar cleansing water. My ultimate holy grail is BIODERMA's Sensibio H2O Micelle Solution but I will occasionally pick up an alternative. I'm currently trying out a few drugstore versions including GARNIER Micellar Cleansing Water, NIVEA Sensitive 3-in-1 Micellar Cleansing Water and the L'OREAL Paris Skin Perfection Micellar Water.

2. Acid Toner / pH Adjusting Toner

I used to use MIZON's AHA/BHA Daily Clean Toner but since that has been out of stock everywhere, I'm back to using the PIXI Glow Tonic. I also recently picked up BRAVURA Revitalising Ginseng Toner which is supposed to be a PIXI dupe, though I have no idea why as it should be the other way around, PIXI being cheaper overall.

3. First Essence

My current favourite is the NATURE REPUBLIC The First Essence and to save time, I also skip the hydrating toner in the mornings.

On days, which I need to get out of the house really quick and don't have time for all the toners and serums, an alternative for steps 3 to 6, is an all- in-one product like SKIN FACTORY 7 Seconds Morning Mask. Just take it out of the fridge and swipe each side of the cotton pad on your face, done.

4. Hydrating Toner

I normally don't use anything in the morning that requires waiting times, so even though the COSRX Natural Returning A-Sol contains BHA, it's not at a high enough pH to exfoliate. Also use LA ROCHE-POSAY's Serozinc as spray toner as well.

5. Essence

My main acne targeted treatment is LJH Tea Tree 90 Essence which I use before any other serums because of the thin, water-like texture. But I am currently trying out an alternative, TOSOWOONG Tea Tree Natural Pure Essence.

6. Serum

I then follow up with another serum, normally one targeted for moisturising and hydration, and I'm currently using SUPERDRUG Super Hydrating Serum.

7. Emulsion

Even though it's suited for the earlier steps, I prefer to use my MIZON All-in-One Snail Repair Cream just before my moisturiser as I believe it helps my makeup go on better.

8. Moisturiser

My day cream is the EMBRYOLISSE Lait-Crème Concentre Moisturiser and I will never swap it out for anything; it's light, it moisturises my super dry skin and does double duty as a primer. I also like to mix a drop or two of ampoule - my current choices are SOY BIO+ Fermented Lumpoule or the COSRX Propolis Light Ampule - to the cream for a dewier, glowy look.

9. SPF

I am constantly changing my SPF, trying to find the perfect one, right now it's SHISEIDO Ultimate Sun Protection Cream SPF 50+ WetForce.

  PM ROUTINE

1. Makeup Removal (1st Cleanse)

We all know how important double cleansing is at night so the first step is makeup removal. If I've worn mascara or any other waterproof eye makeup (not a daily thing for me) I will use Eyeko Mascara Off Wipes Eye Makeup Remover.

I will always have a rotation if at least 4 different cleansers, and choose according to my mood. My ultimate favourite is the Shu Uemura Cleansing Beauty Oil Premium A/I (I've tried other colours but I prefer this one). But alternatives right now include: SKINFOOD Black Sugar Cleansing Oil, BANILA CO. Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm and A'PIEU Clean Up Herb Source Cleansing Balm.

If I'm super lazy, just want to fall into bed, or only wearing sunscreen, I sometimes just a one step cleanser to replace my double cleanse, like BIO-ESSENCE Miracle Bio Water Jelly Make Up Remover or PHILOSOPHY Purity Made Simple Cleanser.

2. Face Wash (2nd Cleanse) + Foreo Luna

For the second cleanse, foaming/bubble cleansers are most popular but as they tend to be drying and have a high pH, I prefer milk, gel and powder cleansers which work just as well. My usual choices are SUNDAY RILEY Ceramic Slip Cleanser, REN Evercalm Gentle Cleansing Gel or INNISFREE Jejubija Anti-Trouble Cleansing Gel. I'm also currently testing the YADAH Anti Trouble Bubble Cleanser which has pH of 5.5.

I used to use my Foreo Luna for both steps but nowadays I'm extra lazy plus I haven't had breakouts as often so I only use it for my second cleanse. It's gentle enough for my skin (no harsh brushing like the Clarasonic) and I find it helps as I'm touching my face less which tempts me to pick at my skin.

3. Acid Toner / pH Adjusting Toner

Again, I use the PIXI Glow Tonic as an acid toner/pH adjusting toner. An alternative I sometimes use at nights is FIRST AID BEAUTY Facial Radiance Pads (especially if travelling).

4. Vitamin C

Back when I was using the OST Original Pure Vitamin C20, I would use Vitamin C and AHA serums on alternative nights as I have senstive skin. After testing, and loving the BTRC Vitalizer C10 Whitening Ampoule (which is a lower concentration and more stable) I am using it nightly.

5. AHA or BHA (alternative nights)

On alternative nights I'll use either an AHA, MIZON's 8% AHA Peeling Serum or BHA, COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid.

6. First Essence

My current favourite is the NATURE REPUBLIC The First Essence which helps reduce redness and prep my skin for more steps.

7. Hydrating Toner

I have so many alternatives for this step but it's normally CHOSUNGAH Wonder Milk, COSRX Natural Returning A-Sol or LA ROCHE-POSAY's Serozinc. I've even used all three for days when I need extra moisture (and had loads of extra time before bed).

8. Essence

My normal LJH Tea Tree 90 Essence just ran out, so I'm testing the TOSOWOONG Tea Tree Natural Pure Essence.

9. Serum

I then follow up with another serum, normally one targeted for moisturising and hydration, and I'm currently using SUPERDRUG Super Hydrating Serum.

9.5 Sheet Mask

I aim to use a sheet mask at least 3 times a week, sometimes they'll all be different, sometimes I'll try one continuously and see if the effects are better.

10. Night Cream

Though I have my day moisturiser set, I continuously try out different night creams. I've found loads of good ones but my go-to fow winter is the GUERISSON 9COMPLEX Cream.

For the summer I've changed it up a bit, first is the COSRX Centella Blemish Cream which is a thick cream but not moisturising enough for me so I add an emulsion, HERA Aquabolic Moisturizing Emulsion which is then followed by an all-in-one/multitasking product.

11.1 Sleeping Pack

As part of my current summer routine, I then follow up the emulsion with SHARA SHARA's Berry Bomb All-in-One Ampoule which can be used as a serum, moisturiser and sleeping pack.
