Rick and Morty didn't have a ton of screentime together in season eight (hopefully, that changes in season nine), but I actually thought they seemed closer in seasons 6-8 than they did in earlier seasons where they spent more time on screen together? Some of the moments I noticed in season eight include:
Morty eagerly joining Rick on adventures rather than sighing as Rick grabs his arm and drags him through a portal
Rick asking Karen and Doug not to get Morty in trouble after Morty beats him up
Morty pulling Rick out of the way when a priest tries to whack him with a baseball bat
Rick killing Thistle after he bites Morty
Rick saying "All right, Morty, grab the sealant, I'll make this quick" like an actual grandfather, not barking orders at him
Rick bringing Morty back to the citadel ruins to help him find his lost fidget spinner
Morty telling Rick off when he feels like it instead of being afraid to cross him
Rick trying to make Morty feel better about Morty Jr.
Rick and Morty having ordinary conversations, like Rick telling Morty the entire plot of a movie
Aside from "Summer of All Fears" (I guess that was this season's "mean Rick" episode), Rick and Morty seemed less like a crazy old man terrorizing his grandson and more like a couple of idiots getting in trouble together. They might've had more interactions in earlier episodes, but those scenes heavily involved Rick insulting and abusing Morty. Now, they're on more equal footing.
Watching these later seasons and thinking about the earlier ones, I'm realizing just how much Rick needs Morty.
Rick has lost a lot of things, from family to friends. The only thing that's kept Rick going for several years was the thought of putting Rick Prime 6ft under. It was his whole life mission, and was one of the biggest factors to why he keeps his distance from his family. Why he doesn't really try to bond with Beth or Jerry or Summer and Morty. That is until he started taking Morty on adventures. It was that moment that gave Morty a chance to get closer and not just be the grandson of the man who murdered Rick's family. Rick got attached the more he got to know Morty, and without even realizing it Morty gave Rick another reason to keep going.
Morty is someone Rick latches on to. He's someone he grows to trust and care for. Morty becomes one of the big motivators for Rick to dig himself out of the hole he'll sink into, because Morty's one of the few who reaches back. He's no longer the boy who could have been his grandson had Diane and Beth survived.
He is his grandson.
And his enthusiasm, his excitement for adventures, especially in the later seasons, give Rick his own enthusiasm back for them. Morty's the one who refuses to give up on him when he himself has already given up. His grandson is a constant, a shadow that follows him and keeps him company when he needs it. He's Rick's best friend, his partner in adventuring, and so much more.
Rick keeps going not just for his family, but for Morty. He continues on, because Morty is there and that's a pretty good reason to keep living. If it means being around your grandson, and extension your family, then it's worth it.
At least that's how I'm interpreting what I'm seeing from all I've seen. (I could be wrong don't quote me on this shdgdgdgdgdg)

i just thought of something: a rick sanchez hug analysis
rick and morty have hugged before, and rick has also hugged beth, and summer before, so, i can think of ANOTHER reason why rick won't hug morty...
in solaricks when the ship crashes, and rick walks out i wonder if rick actually collapsed on his knees, and when morty runs up to try and hug rick, rick stops him, i'm wondering if him stopping morty was more of a "wait, let me stand up" rather than a "stop, don't come near me". because i didn't get the sense that rick didn't want morty near him.
in both solaricks and unmortricken rick gets hugged. i believe the reason rick didn't hug summer back in solaricks, or hug morty back in unmortricken is due to aftermath of the draining, intense, chaotic, dangerous, and traumatic events during the adventure. maybe in a state of shock? maybe exhaustion? he may have been so emotionally numb he didn't even notice he was being hugged.
i don't think rick ever had an issue hugging morty.
Henry Danger is an amazing look at superhero sidekicks that I have rarely seen outside of fanfiction and I am going to talk about why.
A Two Key Points I am keeping in mind
Henry Danger is a spoof of the superhero genre
Child sidekicks in the real world are not, and will never be okay
These two points are intrinsically intertwined with the show and how it deals specifically with Henry. Henry Danger is a spoof of the superhero genre and tropes. This is part of the reason it is so good at doing superhero sidekicks, is rather than shying away from the idea, it leans into it. That is obvious in the names, but also in the way Ray acts, how they react to crime, even the secret identities, and specifically child sidekicks.
Child sidekicks with real world morality are never okay. I have been entrenched in superheroes since I could remember, and have consumed enough superhero media to be considered an expert. Child Sidekicks are as much a suspension of disbelief as Ray’s indestructibility, or Superman’s flight. That being said, I do not hold Ray morally responsible for Henry being Kid Danger.
THAT BEING SAID, Henry is a catchall for superhero sidekicks in superhero media, and addresses the fallout, and failings of what that means. The tropes Henry doesn’t fit, the Dangerverse has sidekicks that do. Because Henry Danger is a spoof, it is able to address the frankly absolute horror that a child sidekick has to go through in a way that if shown in other superhero media, would make the superhero the villain.
Drex is the original sidekick in the Dangerverse. He is the sidekick turned sour towards his mentor. Ray talks about how Drex was cruel, which is what led to them fighting with Drex ending up in jail. Red Hood and Speedy (Yes I know he is not a villain, but his story addresses the failings of his mentor) are the first to come to mind.
Henry is Robin. Robin was the original sidekick, with no powers, and a very generic reason for being with Batman that was later retconned. Henry is the good sidekick, who looks up to and trusts his hero. He has the best qualities of his mentor, without the same moral failings. Henry is the ideal for what a sidekick should turn out like.
Dangerforce are the sidekicks that have uncontrollable powers, and want to use them to save people. With great power comes great responsibility. They are going to fight crime with or without supervision, and have built in protection because of their powers. They are also inherently a team, so Young Avengers or Young Justice have a lot of characters in this trope.
Finally, Missy Martin is the nonnegotiable. She strong arms Henry into becoming his sidekick, and doesn’t let him back out. Too smart for their own good, and they are most comfortable in their role as sidekick. Because it was never about being a superhero but about helping their hero in any way they can. Think Tim Drake or Wally West.
I don’t include Jasper in this list, because he was never technically a sidekick, and was an adult when he became a hero.
Henry Danger is about Henry as the title character, and not as part of a team, which means the show is able to explore the dynamic of sidekicks, without getting sidetracked by the main hero. Sure all of the tropes are played up, but the red string is there from the very beginning.
Henry was never going to become Captain Man. He couldn’t because he was already a hero when he was hired. He was never going to fit the mold of Captain Man because of that, which is what ultimately drove the wedge between him and Ray. Because that final fight was not about Henry being Kid Danger. It was about him one day not being Kid Danger.
