So, this is an odd album. Mostly because it comes with a story set up of a character named That Poppy. A combination of work done by singer Moriah Pereira and director Titanic Sinclair, That Poppy sort of has a story and background set up for the web series and album being tied together. That Poppy has her foot in the door within the industry, mostly with her really creepy and odd Youtube channel though. This character is a young, blond girl that usually is in a video that states things sounding like her senses are dulled in a manner that makes her sound under the influence or sheâs hypnotized with choppy syntax. This is usually accompanied by some incongruous music in the background that gives this eerie vibe. Now, there are lots of theories pertaining to who this character is, from Titanic Sinclair just taking jabs at popular culture to Poppy being under âMonarch Mind Controlâ from the way that she talks and acts. But, all in all, the idea of these videos definitely has something sinister behind it.
The whole album is pop bangers, and sounds like itâs ripping off of anything thatâs hot when talking about it sonically, but just like the videos found on her channel, the album is pretty innocent looking but further looking into some reddit pages, you have some pretty crazy theories going on when you look into the lyrics, ideals, and song tiltes. The first song lowlife is some reggae inspired pop song that sounds pretty basic with its formula, with wome very catchy melodies. Itâs very cute, but not very special from the way itâs structured, how it sounds, and so forth. Itâs just another pop song when first listened to. Talking about someone who âtake a shitty day and make it alright.â The second verse comes in though and it kind of gets darker, if you believe all the reddit posts, and says things like âThis bad taste, these headaches. Wake up on the floor again, ah yeah. My torn dress, this failed test. Soon they will be erasedâ supposedly describing experiences had by supposed monarch victims. The song Money is an absolute radio hit. Itâs pretty basic, just as the first song. With basic electronic riffs, the whole shouty chorus with some average, but introspective, lyrics. It follows the exact formula you need to do to make a radio hit, but it has some lyrics like âThey say the best things are free but I canât get what I need without some currencyâ which is very interesting because you donât get that introspectiveness with songs that are sonically radio pop songs. The song Altar is about her marrying her crush and taking him away from a toxic relationship. Just like the other songs, sonically itâs a regular pop song thatâs just caked on with some synths. Itâs a fun and catchy song, but thatâs all it is. Now, hereâs where that sinister dark side of that album will kind of look stupid when you try and put it up against this one. Some theorists will claim that just because the title references an âaltar.â An altar is a slate where religious rituals are performed. Apparently this can be âeasilyâ tied to the alleged satanic ritual abuse that goes on within the music industry. Sounds like the illuminati... All though these theories and whatnot exist, I donât exactly believe them. Mostly because the last song is immensely less subtle with itâs message. This is what I believe the real message of the whole album is, just as Titanic Sinclairâs usual message is, just taking shots at pop culture. He over exaggerates the stereotype so much in hopes to attack the people with them, and by them, I mean pop culture. American Kids is a song lyrically criticizing a lot of things kids do and what theyâre influenced by. The song instantly starts out telling the audience she sold her soul in the line âSold my soul to the man with the handshake. Lost control but I donât think itâs too late.â This type of line is usually in Hip-Hop that always has controversy coming to this topic in that genre, but not nearly as much as other genres, especially pop music. This is a reference to not being able to do what you want because of a signed contract to a manager or a record label. The purpose of music would be record sales and not simply doing it for the love of it. Along with that, this whole song just takes shots at millennials with lines like âBoys, aren't even boys anymoreâ saying chivalry is dead. So, when you take this last songs message and ideals and slap it on top of the album as the thesis, itâs pretty interesting and a very creative idea... or you could just say sheâs a monarch victim or apart of the Illuminati to, I donât judge. People can think what they want to. Itâs a very simple and generic sounding album with a rare thesis that has much controversy, but displayed very subtly. This creates something very interesting and intriguing. I enjoyed this album and itâs ideals, but since it still is a very generic radio hit album I couldnât listen to it for very long. Probably once or twice. But, all in all I would give it a 7/10
