Contemporary Archeology VI
Sky Edwards
2026
Acrylic paint on recycled materials and found objects.
Contemporary Archaeology VI explores spaces reclaimed by ecology and community. Built upon industrial form, it reflects on the experience of a trans girl looking for expression, belonging, and safety. It will exhibit in October 2026 in the Castaways Sculpture Awards in Rockingham.
Contemporary Archaeology I Sky Edwards 2024 Recycled materials and acrylic paint.
Contemporary Archaeology I explores industrial form; layers of use-disuse, damage-repair; inhabited, utilitarian, essential, abject spaces. It arose from Sky’s miniature work and photography. It exhibited in the Compact exhibition (Vic Park, 2024) and was Highly Commended in the Castaways Sculpture Awards (City of Rockingham, 2024).

Tilt
What is the application of *tilt in portrait photography?
(*not available on normal lenses)
No idea. Pointless? Selective background focus?
These have the same composition and settings except:
1) No tilt.
2) 10° tilt.
(Hint: what's going on with the pride flag?)
Canon R7, Asahi Super Takumar 1:2 55mm, Fotodiox tilt shift adaptor.
Shift
What is the application of lens shift in portrait photography?
(Shift is not available with most lenses)
Thought: Angle makes a difference, especially as a tgirl, eg. to be seen from above.
These have the same composition and settings, except:
1) shift down
2) no shift
3) shift up
I don't know if this is actually of any use, but I think it's interesting.
Canon R7, Asahi Super Takumar 1:2 55mm, Fotodiox tilt shift adaptor.
Geometry is Real.
Perspective Is Optional.
I'm looking straight in my eye in each photo. It looks like I'm not because of shift.
Focus: not trying, it would be possible to get it right.
Light: looks different mostly because the shift causes an off centre vignette.

A normal lens has a focal plane parallel to the sensor/film. Focus at 5m: everything at 5m is in focus.
Tilt changes the angle of the focal plane.
No tilt: Just my face is in focus.
Tilt: Background left (flag), my eye, and foreground right (part of lens and hand) are in focus.

U-193-X
A nature and horror project. Drawings and artefacts as evidence of a similar but distorted world.
Covid hit in my final semester, preventing the physical install I wanted, it had to be online. I was frustrated and turned it into an archive.org project relating to archival aesthetics and institutional opacity. So I made it a chaotic and hard to navigate mess.
Review: "The most horrible thing I have ever seen."
Edit: weird, this was meant to be a post in the tumblr bugs community, not a post to my blog. It's fine, but strange.
I love bugggssss
A few of my pics. Cabbage white butterfly. Maratus speciosus, the coastal peacock spider. Myrmecia sp. bullant.

For the theme Signs, I explore my use of and frustration with signs and signalling.

That was a bit of a hiatus. I'm feeling great, but very busy. Being a girl is a lot of work. Hopefully more art soon!
A gift for my lovely housemate @nuclearautumn
Based on a photo I took at Devils At Cradle, in Tasmania.
I've recently created the stupidest camera.
120 film, takes 68 format macro shots.
Body and shutter: a box brownie.
Lens: a broken Canon EF 50mm f/1.8. Which isn't a medium format lens. However, the lens is so far from the film that it should mostly cover the medium format frame.
The obvious side effect of this is the changed focal distance: 51.5mm from lens to subject, which cannot be adjusted.
Aperture: fixed and unknown.
Shutter speed: set by the brownie, so only 1/45 ish or Bulb.
In theory this thing should have excellent image quality (the 50 1.8 is surprisingly nice) and be a nightmare to actually use. Note the almost total lack of exposure control, so I will probably only be able to control exposure with flash or filters, or just having the correct lighting to start with.
Keep in mind that this is not using the f/1.8 aperture. It has an arbitrary, unknown aperture. Finding the correct exposure could be a challenge.
First attempt: I calculated everything basically right.
Fuck yes.
Hell of a vignette, but not too bad for a 35mm system lens on 6x8 medium format film.
How about Maratus rainbowi? (a silly lookin type of peacock spider ^^)
The silly guy from Webbed! Magnificent. I'll be doing the poll on Maratus spendens, because Maratus rainbowi seems to be an inactive taxon. I've included a picture of a female, just for fun.
Have you seen the splendid peacock spider (Maratus splendens)?
I have now
Yes, in photos/videos
I've seen peacock spiders in general, in photos/videos
Yes, irl
I've seen peacock spiders in general, irl
@gaystropod reblogging because I want to add pics! I have never to my knowledge seen M. splendens in person.
I've seen the extremely similar Maratus pavonis many times.
Also the very beautiful Maratus speciosus by carefully tracking them down.
While looking for speciosus, I found M. speculifer, the Black Mirror Peacock Spider, which isn't colourful but is still cool. It's shiny black instead.
