While obviously World War I wasn't called that until there was a World War II to compare it to, the phrase "the First World War" actually predates WWII, in the sense of being the first war of its kind. So if you went back in time to between WWI and WWII and referred to the former as "World War I", you wouldn't necessarily out yourself as a time traveller, but people would be thinking "what an odd way to phrase that".
