My Papá always used to say, “When you fall off your horse, you ain’t goin’ past the ground. Catch your breath, check everything is still workin’, and get back up. The longer you sit there feelin’ sorry for yourself, the more you will lose out.” I used to think that only applied to ridin’. Fall down. Get back up. Keep on movin’.

Then I met Anne.

Life had a way of throwin’ you harder than any horse ever could, and she had every reason to stay down. The world wrote her off after they found out what she was. She lost everything. Yet somehow, she still found a reason to keep one foot in front of the other. She kept getting back up.

After a while, I realized my Papá’s lesson wasn’t about avoiding the fall. It was about refusing to let it be the end of you.
