SAME! I think it should be studied as a rise in governmental propaganda and the agencies of government we put our trust in (or distrust in). Specifically; we are seeing a LOT of space propaganda, directly after the formation of the United States Space Force
Project Hail Mary is heavy Space propaganda, it highlights humanity, however- who is representing humanity in this film? A white male American school teacher?
Let me also highlight, the challenger disaster, the teachers in space project, this film is very very NASA, which makes sense it’s a American film, and though it shows connections to other nations heavily, the movie demonstrates the realist depiction of America being the lead in space exploration
White American man school teacher, a stereotypical ‘Everyman’ of scientist, forced onto a rocket? But it was worth it? People putting space on the screen, as something we need to travel to in order to save humanity, when in actuality Space is Militarized
Space Engineering is a way of demonstrating a nations power, its science is used for ballistic missile development. Lockheed martin (largest weapons manufacturer) works with NASA on their missions, a weapons manufacturer was the primary builder on the Orion Spacecraft. Lockheed Martin and NASA share information; the information from missions like the Artemis is used to make better missiles
A significant portion of astronauts have military history (no surprise they kinda need it); NASA is a government agency and is connected to all other government agencies; the Department of War uses NASA to run drone attack. It’s also how the Navy and Air Force knew where and how to retrieve the Astronauts of the successful Artemis II mission
So,, where do people wanna work after watching a movie about space?? NASA, and if they have military history; the Space Force. Space Propaganda is one of the biggest causes of national pride, and one of the biggest displays of the power the United States holds.
Which is why, I loved the sad ending of Iron Lung; nothing was governmentally glamorous, he was put in an ocean of blood, suffered psychological torture and radiation poisoning. It made me very emotional, I’ve had loved ones be chemically poisoned by the government, imprisoned, driven insane (clinically insane 100% disabled) by the trauma of war. So iron lung was, so so relatable in that sense
And then Hail Mary came out, and Artemis II happened, and it’s all so lovely and I love it! I went to see the Artemis II launch, I grew up on the space coast, I love space: which is why i also know, it’s total propaganda, and NASA’s space exploration is a power display to other nations of the world, and the science of that mission will be used to kill people
You’re probably gonna see a Space Force moon base in your life time, part of NASA’s Artemis II mission is to have “American superiority in space”, and when that happens we will look back on things like Project Hail Mary and realize the young kids who were fans of it grew up to join the military
Also look into operation Paper Clip, NASA was formed partly by Nazis in order for the United States to fight the Cold War, the US wanted to continue nuclear weapons development and military superiority, so they took former Nazi’s back to America and created the Space Program. There’s more than NASA than that, and there’s more to NASA than military, but it wouldn’t exist if it couldn’t be weaponized
