The urge to control always stems from fear. Dream was scared of Tommy. That’s why he went out of his way to exile him and monitor him. He was scared of death, so he mastered his control over it, he was scared of betrayal so he lost all of his friends in an attempt to control them (don’t even get me started on Punz and how the more paranoid dream grew the more Punz blindly trusted him. Punz gave up everything else to dedicate himself to Dream).

I know people associate him with the colour green (duh), but to me he is white. White in the way of something that has lost all colour, all joy, all other emotion. Anytime he gains colour, he makes sure to wash it all off again. Because colour, emotion, feelings are difficult to control and predict.

The interesting thing here is that yes I do think fear is a huge piece of Dream’s arc, something I’ve talked about before [<> <>] like you pointed out it is his fear of death that leads him to try and conquer it and it is his fear of losing his friends that leads him to try and take control of the situations, it is his fear of Tommy that leads him to try and pacify him. But I think it’s important to note that fear doesn’t come out of nowhere and isn’t his initial reaction to things, all of these fears are real and have proven to be real. So here’s where we diverge.

Is he? Because I’d almost argue in multiple instances he isn’t scared enough. He underestimates people. He isn’t scared enough of the server to think they’ll really take all of his lives in staged finale, he isn’t scared enough of Sam and the prison to think he’ll end up starved and tortured, he isn’t scared enough of Tommy in the finale to think he’d nuke them. He isn’t even scared enough of Wilbur when he first started L’manberg because even after the war he let them have it. He isn’t afraid of everything. People who are afraid of everything don’t rain tnt down from the sky. No, he’s afraid of what became actual threats.

He didn’t try and protect things? Are you sure? Because he tried to protect Spirit’s leather by going along with the blackmail at first, only to realize that it would never end, Tommy wasn’t going to just stop with making him remove the wall just as he didn’t stop by using it to leverage himself out of an agreement. Instead he pushed it a step further into removing the wall and then who knows what he’d force Dream to do next (this is a man who literally held Antfrost hostage for a day to force to do labor and who used Techno and Dream to fight wars for him…). He lost George (and by extension Sapnap) trying to protect him. Trying to remove him from the throne after Techno just killed him because of it. But he didn’t walk away from them, they walked away from him after he begged them to understand.

And a huge piece of staged finale is literally him protecting Punz by having him dissociate with him. So yes, he lost his attachments but for all he says he didn’t throw them away, and he never lost his attachment to them. Not even when they wanted to kill him like Sapnap who is mentioned in the finale as an example of his friend. It was never about his worry of being hurt but his worry of them getting hurt because of him.
