Not easy to be a hero… I find it particularly interesting that John’s decision to give up his normal life comes right after his conversation with Beale, who told him “ I like knowing you’re out there, a ghost, still doing what needs to be done.” I think seeing his old boss, who always liked John, respects his new career choice and is not gonna be a threat, helped John reconcile himself with his past. This is who he is, who he’ll always be. A ghost, that does what needs to be done. Whether he kills the bad guys or saves the good ones, maybe it’s not that different after all.
So, this is John making the same choice as he did with Jessica. Choosing the job over the dream of a normal life. This is actually a very brave choice to make, knowing what happened the first time. And it shows how strong John is at this point. This is, in a way, the end of a long journey for John. The journey back to his old self. The young and idealistic soldier who wanted to save the world. And true to himself, he knows this is the right thing to do, if not the easy one.
