On a tendance à considérer Miki comme un rayon de soleil - et c'est ce qu'il était de base, avant qu'une ombre vienne l'empêcher de briller. Premier et unique fils d'une famille plutôt aisée où règne le patriarcat, il n'y a jamais trouvé sa place. Il en a rien à faire des exigences de son père qui veut juste un héritier et quelqu'un à qui filer l'entreprise une fois qu'il ne sera plus en âge de la diriger. C'est juste un garçon qui aspire à un autre destin, qui veut juste vivre sa vie comme il l'entend. Il a également une petite soeur - Nate - qui elle, est invisible aux yeux de ses parents, qui n'est pas reconnue à sa juste valeur juste parce qu'elle est une fille. Si tout le monde semble marcher sur des oeufs dans cette famille, y compris leur propre mère, pour ne pas contrarier le chef de rang, c'est le garçon qui décide de briser la glace en premier. Le jour où il décide de refuser ce que son père lui dit, s'en suit une dispute, ils en viennent aux mains, et lui qui pense être enfin entendu et reconnu comme Miki et pas comme l'héritier qu'il était censé devenir, voit ses parents lui mettre un couteau dans le dos, quand il est envoyé dans une sorte de camp de redressement (c'est censé être une sorte d'école ou un asile pour les jeunes hommes à problèmes). C'est également ce départ précipité qui creuse un fossé entre lui et sa petite soeur, qui lui en veut de lui laisser toute les responsabilités sur les épaules, même si en soit ce n'est pas sa faute. Une fois dans cet asile, il se fait vite deux amis (San et Minho) et ce trio perdurera un bon moment avant que les choses ne se gâtent avec Minho (il a des pb de gestion de colère et de possessivité) qui décide de faire une fixette sur Miki et qui essaie d'instaurer une emprise sur lui. Miki est juste un garçon gentil mais qui a énormément de frustration en lui, il est discret, se fait petit et n'est pas violent pour un sou - autrement dit, lui même ne comprend pas ce qu'il fait à cet endroit là.

Somewhere, in the second Kody’s head hit the wall and he spat blood onto the floor, he thought he probably deserved that one. The next blow came without warning, his skull slamming against the wood again, that metallic taste never leaving his mouth.

The days passed without him really being able to count them. Sometimes, Kody hallucinated, he thought he could hear the Ha-min somewhere far off, feel it like an echo in his chest, as if someone were coming to save him. He didn’t know what he was allowed to feel, what he was allowed to think, he’d come to terms with the idea that this was his end, that even if his friends couldn’t find him, even if they couldn’t reach the old village where he was condemned, it wasn’t their fault. Still, panic crawled up through his body, spreading until his whole being trembled when he felt sand beneath his knees, when they threw him onto the beach. He turned his head from side to side, trying to free his wrists from the chains biting into his skin. They tore off the blindfold, and the first thing he saw wasn’t the waves just meters away, but his executioner, standing only inches from him, with that same cruel glint in his eyes.

He tried to keep his composure, a faint smirk twisting his lips. He tried to stay proud, insolent, even in his final moments. But he couldn’t ignore the way his heart was pounding, so violently that it hurt, so fast that he thought he might faint before the end even came. The sea air bit at his open wounds, his tongue brushed his lower lip, tasting salt and blood.

And when he closed his eyes. When he thought it was over.

He heard a sound.

That familiar sound forced his eyes open. As his gaze kept staring at the waves, he saw something, an indistinct shadow far away, cutting through the fog. It was so blurred he was afraid his mind was playing tricks on him. He focused, squinted, and noticed that others around him had seen it too. Then, black sails. Tall. Majestic. The Ha-min. His heart skipped a beat as hope rushed back. For a second, he thought he was dreaming, that any moment now he’d wake up back in that dirty cabin. But no, the sea was roaring against the ship. His executioner shouted orders, others stumbled back in panic, and Kody, despite the unbearable pain that wracked his body, started laughing. A bright, broken laugh, filled with relief, so out of place among the shouts and chaos. Tears welled in his eyes as a trembling breath escaped his lips. L'appartement était beaucoup trop silencieux, Eunchae n'avait pas dormi de la nuit. Cela faisait deux jours que le corps de sa mère avait été emporté, deux jours qu'elle n'avait pas laissé couler une seule larme - pas encore. Elle s'était occupée de remplir les papiers, répondu aux appels, souri aux voisins inquiets, comme si elle était encore debout et solide, du haut de ses dix-sept ans. ↳ ivar (21) — de son vrai nom seo in-beol. celui qui prend les devants et qui soutient sa soeur lorsqu'elle est trop épuisée. le roc de cette famille, qui obéit sans réellement discuter, ou qui remplace son besoin de tendresse par une personnalité dure et quelque peu éloignée de ce qu'il est réellement. il parle peu, mais agit beaucoup. mais malgré ses regards noirs et cette attitude paternelle, il a une grande admiration envers ses frères et soeur. mais au fond, il envie la rage de magda, l'air insouciant de torben et les sourires de kody.

↳ torben (20) — de son vrai nom seo tae-mun. c'est celui qui fait rire quand l'ambiance est trop lourde est pesante. celui qui grimace, qui raconte des histoires pour faire oublier la peur ou la faim. on dit qu'il a toujours été comme ça, un peu pitre sur les bords, un gosse espiègle avec les yeux qui brillent, toujours une vanne sur le bord des lèvres. mais ce n'est qu'une façade, un masque qu'il porte, parce qu'en réalité c'est un gosse hypersensible. celui qui ressent toujours trop fort, trop vite, et qui cache tout derrière une apparence légère.

↳ kody (19) — de son vrai nom seo gyo-deuk. charmeur, drôle, agile, moqueur. il donne l'impression que rien ne l'atteint réellement, il rit trop fort, parle trop vite, séduit beaucoup trop rapidement, mais tout ça ce n'est qu'une façade. au fond c'est un enfant qui n'a jamais su comment pleurer, qui n'a pas eu le temps de grandir, qui cache sa douleur derrière son attitude désinvolte et moqueuse. il vole, ment, joue, pour pas qu'on voit ce qu'il cherche à fuir. il aime sa famille d'un amour inconditionnel, mais a souvent l'impression de ne pas avoir sa place, de n'être qu'un rôle de plus.

la famille shin était autrefois un clan uni, connu sur les mers pour leur loyauté et leur courage. le père, capitaine redouté, et la mère une navigatrice d'exception, avaient su transmettre à leurs enfants le sens de l'honneur et de la solidarité, et un amour profond pour la liberté. ils vivaient non loin d'un porc, sur la côte marquant la limite avec les terres japonaises. mais un soir tout bascule, parce que dans l'ombre, un rival observait cette petite famille, un rival assoiffé de pouvoir et d'envie, qui considérait la famille shin comme une réelle menace. le rival lança l'assaut. une embuscade. des flèches enflammées qui embrasèrent le port et les marins tentaient de repousser l'attaque et l'ennemi, mais c'était trop tard. le feu était trop grand, trop puissant, et c'est impuissants que les enfants assistèrent à la disparition de leurs parents, la dernière image qu'ils aient d'eux, fût celle d'un couple qui était submergé par les flammes. le lendemain, le clan n'existait plus, plus rien ne leur appartenait, leurs parents avaient donné leur vie pour sauver les enfants, laissant derrière eux un vide immense, et surtout une volonté de survivre.

↳ nellysia (30) — de son vrai nom shin naria. le genre de personne qu'on sous estime, jusqu'à ce qu'elle ne montre son vrai visage. elle pense en retrait, analyse, attend, et c'est même elle qui tenait la main à magda quand elles étaient petites. qui calmait les crises de kody, qui savait faire rire torben et qui soulageait quelque peu les épaules de ivar. elle n'élève jamais la voix, mais sa présence suffit à faire taire une pièce, n'ayant pas chercher à être une tête importante ou une leader, on la suit tout de même dans ses choix. elle porte encore des cicatrices, des marques du temps causés par l'incendie.

↳ sylas (21) — de son vrai nom shin seojun. il n'a pas dit un mot depuis l'incendie, un blocage profond, que personne ne sait réellement expliquer. certains pensent qu'il est muet de naissance, mais ceux qui le connaissent savent qu'il a choisi le silence. il ne parle pas, mais communique autrement ; avec les mains, les yeux, les regards entendus et les sourires. c'est lui qui s'occupe de réparer les objets cassés sur le navire - les gens aussi parfois, il comprend mieux les émotions que les paroles. il a tendance à s'effacer, à se mettre en retrait par rapport à sa fratrie, mais sa présence est comme un ancrage pour tout le monde.
