It's always interesting to me when I see people who claim to be long-time practitioners saying things along the lines of "if you're not posting pictures or proof of your magical workings, you're not doing witchcraft."
Don't buy into that kind of talk. If you're practicing witchcraft and you like to take pictures and post them or document your workings that's fine, but it's also fine if you're a practitioner who prefers not to take pictures, not to post about active workings, not to publicly detail every (or any) bit of witchery and magic you're performing.
And let's not forget that some traditions discourage sharing too much of your work or practice, some traditions are closed and their practitioners might not feel comfortable publicly documenting details of their craft that they may feel need protecting, and some practitioners simply hold personal beliefs and preferences against publicly posting their active workings, workspaces, etc.
One's craft or practice is in no way determined by how much of it they're willing to share with the public. Do you, ignore that kind of noise, and never, I beg, feel as though you're not doing enough in your practice because you're not "posting proof" of that practice. You're no more or less of a witch depending on how many pictures you took or posts you made sharing your witchery with others.
I'm not a gatekeeper so yall. the best thrift stores are the ones that look bad. do not go to cool trendy thrift stores with hot alt twenty-something employees. (I mean you can if you want but enjoy paying $40 for a fuckass shirt.)
here's what you actually want in a thrift store:
in a rich town
run by a church
staffed exclusively by little old ladies
most of the clothes will be butt ugly. but they will also be 1) good quality and 2) cheap af. the 70 year olds running the shop think a thrifted shirt should be $3 and they are correct. everyone else shopping there is over the age of 45 so you won't have to throat punch any depop resellers over a cunty little top. you will get hyped up by old ladies and if you frequent the same shop they may start trying to set you up with their grandkids. everyone wins and who knows their grandkids might be hot.
what is your personal albatross? the thing that is weighing on the back of your mind constantly. identify it and give it a name, then imagine it taking off in flight, lifting itβs weight off of you. visualize it flying far far off into the horizon.

Every day I handle more money than I will ever make. Every day.
At the start of my employment, my boss showed me videos of people stealing, and we both had a chuckle about it. How silly they were! There was a camera overhead, and itβs not to watch the shoppers. See, we canβt actually stop shoplifters. They get away with it maybe nine out of ten times. But we, who are watched and tallied and witnessed? We are always caught.
At first it was hard to hold one hundred dollars bills. An amount I had never seen before. An amount that didnβt exist in my household. Itβs normal now. Here is something that is not for me.
βWhat the hell, Iβll take another,β says the man, pondering our 200 dollar watches. What the hell. Total comes to 580 and not even a flinch in his face. I have been working for 11 hours today and made only 110 dollars. It will go to my rent. Today I work for free, it feels. When I get my check, I will have 35 dollars left for food and saving.
The six hundreds he hands me go into the cash register. For a moment, I imagine having money. Then I put it away, counting out his change.
I know for a fact we sell our products for double what they are worth. That I could be making commission. That they could hand me those 580 dollars and change my life and not even mark the difference in their checkbooks. Heβs not the only sale they make today, but I am the reason they made it. Heβs not the only one spending 600 dollars, but if I hadnβt spent two hours with him telling me about his life, he wouldnβt have spent any. I go home. I donβt own a watch.
I have watched and rewatched a video on how to make salmon four ways. My shopping list is always the same. Pasta. Rice. Tuna. If I can afford butter it was a good week. I dream of the world I will never walk in, where I can throw the best fish fillet in the cart with a shrug. I hold hundreds in my hand and look up at the camera. I put them under the cash drawer.
I go to work. I scrap together my savings. I eat my bowl of rice slowly. My manager takes a paid week off from work just for his birthday. He owns a yacht.Β
i wrote this while i was working at orlandoβs walt disney world parks.
i was part of their college program. i moved to the state for it. they legally owned the building i was living in and still charged me rent. i ostensibly was being charged to work for them. it was a 2 bedroom apartment and they placed 6 adult women in it in forced triples.
as many as one in ten disney employees have experienced homelessness while working for the company. despite huge efforts to unionize, strike, or otherwise demand fair treatment; disney has refused to increase employee quality of life.
disney admits publicly that a good portion of their success is because the employees (βcast membersβ) are dedicated, passionate, and selfless. this is never reflected in pay. even βfaceβ characters (ie those that are princesses etc) make barely above a minimum wage.
at the time that i worked there, i made $8.50 an hour. at one point i was asked to create a human shield around a bag because a bomb dog had alerted to it. for eight fucking dollars an hour.
i now work a very cushy office job. i have bought the salmon and cooked it all four ways.
i go to the store. i am nice to the person behind the counter. she looks up at the camera while she counts out my change. there is nothing fundamentally different about her and i.
humans are born with a drive to appreciate art. we love color, we love music, we love dance, even as infants. we have an instinct to sculpt in clay and draw on walls, even to fix blocks into expressive shapes, or tell stories with our toys. these things are universal, all cultures have stories and songs and dances and textiles and pottery and beauty. art is something we all have in us.
Listen, marketing-as-exploitation discussions aside, Rainbow Capitalism is, has been, and continues to be the canary in the coal mine of social acceptance for the queer community.
If youβll all pardon my Americentrism for a moment, the amount, visibility, and flamboyance of Pride merch available in clothing, home goods, and comestibles stores is a DIRECT reflection of how safe it is to be queer in public in the United States.
How? Simple. Out groups arenβt profitable. If youβre not βacceptableβ in the current social climate, big franchise businesses will not market to you. (Prime example - Look how quickly Target dropped all their Pride merch after having been wall-to-wall rainbows every June for almost a decade prior.)
Sure, capitalism sucks and being viewed as an exploitable marketing demographic isnβt a fun concept.
HOWEVER.
The grim truth is that being normalized enough to be considered profitable by corporations IS A GOOD THING in terms of the barometer of social acceptance.
Same thing goes for smaller businesses that throw kitschy Pride events or even just put a token rainbow flag in the window or somewhere inside the shop. Thatβs a level of acceptance that DID NOT EXIST thirty years ago, and I can tell you because I was there.
The fact that we can scoff and bitch about being an exploitable marketing demographic nowadays means we have made GIGANTIC strides since the 1990s. It also speaks to the fact that the drive and the conversation surrounding LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance are continuing. And getting louder.
You can be cynical about it if you want. But I will take a store that puts out lip-service rainbow merch over a world that pretends we donβt exist any day of the week. Because that will always mean something.

The basics
Before I get into my personal lived experiences, what exactly is hedge witchcraft? Well, it means a couple different things. Most practitioners when they hear someone is a "hedge witch" they think of someone who is a hedge rider, which is true! Hedge riding is a form of what many would compare to astral projection, planes walking, spirit travel, what have you. It's utilizing a trance state to explore other planes of existence (or what I like to just call the Otherworld), but it doesn't require a complete out of body experience to be achieved.
Beyond hedge riding though, hedge witchcraft is a medieval European practice which utilizes traditional folklore, spirit work, your local natural environment, and history to cultivate knowledge and perform your magick. Hedge witches of medieval times were known most commonly as Cunning Folk, but also Toadsmen and women, Fairy Doctors, and Pellars, amongst other titles. The modern term of "hedge witch" is both literal and symbolic, as Cunning Folk often lived on the edge of their settlement where hedges literally bordered civilization and the wilderness as you can see in my photo. But it is also symbolic to the border between the mundane or physical world and the Otherworld, hence the term "hedge riding."
Despite living on the edge of their settlements, Cunning Folk were quite involved in helping their communities. Helping people is why many Cunning Folk did their practice, which was often passed down to them by their parents. They were healers, midwives, philosophers, fortune tellers, advisors, and more. They used their magick to find lost items, counter witchcraft, created charms of various purposes like to bring in love, encourage a healthy harvest of crops, ensure financial prosperity, and so on. They had a knowledge of every medicinal plant in their area both for oral, topical, and aromatherapeutic use. But most importantly they often went against the grain of societal standards and expectations, so many people sought out the Cunning Folk for help when they did not trust their own systems or if all else had failed.
Privately is when the Cunning Folk traveled the Otherworld for knowledge and self exploration. Their connection to both the mundane and the magickal aspects and influences of nature is what allowed them to help people in need. Most often when people, whatever they may practice, visit the Otherworld it requires going into a trance state. Allowing your soul to explore and discover what your body cannot percieve. That is where the talent of a hedge witches practice lies. Becoming so familiar and at one with the intricacies of nature in both worlds, that they begin to blend together without the need for such concentrated trancework. While still necessary for deep exploration, many well practiced hedge witches, Cunning Folk, what have you can see, feel, and hear whispers of the Otherworld as naturally and easily as breathing.
Sort of, but not "rules" in the same sense that Wicca or Catholocism have rules, redes, or commandments. Moreso, hedge witchcraft is a collection of practices that notably separate it from other magickal practices. The main one being hedge riding. Without hedge riding, you are not a hedge witch. Traditions, folklore, and spirituality aside, working with beings of the Otherworld (be it spirits, fae, deities, what have you) and the Otherworld itself is the defining trait of a hedge witch. Calling yourself a hedge witch when you do no such trancework is like calling yourself a sailor without having ever sailed the sea. This goes for any other practice with a specifying title (for example High Magick, Druidry, Hoodoo, etc), the title exists because certain aspects, beliefs, and methods of that practice make it definably unique from others. Some practices are more loose than others.
Being a hedge witch is strictly solitary. Not that you can't make friends with other magickal practitioners or celebrate esbats or sabbats with others and do group rituals and the like. But the practice is solitary for a few reasons. For one, as a hedge witch your practice is wholly your own, built through not only traditions and nature but your personally unique lived experience. The practice is not meant to be governed by the rules (however spoken or unspoken they may be) created by anyone else. A hedge witch doesn't do well in a coven. For two, isolated silence and stillness is a hedge witches greatest tool to connecting to nature, to the Otherworld, and to yourself. As only when there is silence can we hear nature's songs of wind or birdcall. To hear our own thoughts and go down a path of self discovery. The way of the hedge witch is to be your own teacher and student, with no one to direct you other than yourself, spirit guides, and the world around you.
But other than those two there are no other real "rules" to keep in mind. Everything else just sort of naturally falls in line with hedge witchcraft. Practicing with and knowing nature is a big part of hedge witchcraft, but you can cultivate this connection and your knowledge by your own means. Same goes for learning from, working with, and following local or generational history and traditions, how you practice trancework, ways in which you commune with spirits and other entities, as well as whom/what. These are all basic practices of being a hedge witch, but you have the freedom to go about them in ways that work best for you. While yes, reading books and garnering second opinions from other practitioners is a good and important way of learning, most of your knowledge as a hedge witch is cultivated from your personal lived experience. Your practice is meant to be unique and adaptable to your way of life and local environment. And it's meant to be a practice, not a hobby.
I've lived in the same house in the same little village my whole life, located in the mountains surrounded by forestry. The village is also a historical district that values community and the arts. It feels like I was made for hedge witchcraft, and a lot of my practice is much more about being than doing because there is so much magick around us all the time! Some days right when I step outside I'm greeted by a spirit that comes with the rain. I connect with the squirrels and the crows that visit the yard for snacks. I find it peaceful and comforting to connect myself to the forests' system and feel everything alive all the way down to the mycorrhizal network all the way up to the wind that blows through the trees. I've learned so many lessons from just being with and listening to the tree and the wind and the water spirits.
Spiritual and mundane community is important to me as well. I pet sit for people around the village, I work at a nonprofit museum where I get to meet a lot of people with interesting stories to share, and I join community events when I have the time to spare! Being a solitary practitioner doesn't mean that I can't make friends and swap stories of life and adventures. And as for spiritual community it's easiest for me to commune with nature spirits and the fae. Some spirits I interact with end up sticking around in my life in some way while many others come and go. I don't currently work with any deities, but I am close with my spirit guides and my relationship with them is very valuable.
As for spells and rituals, most of what I do is related to my mental, physical, and spiritual health. Cleansings and purifications, protections and shadow work, self love and beauty spells, things of that nature. Taking care of oneself is just as important as taking care of nature and your community! And I do these spells for others as well, supplying people who ask for spells to help them sleep better, for protection, general healing, and so on. I typically give these spells to people through spell satchels, handmade tea bags, and dressed candles. Usually I ask for nothing in return, if not a gift rather than money. And when I get a place of my own one day I want to do much more work with hearth magick than I do now!
And when I'm not in nature or casting spells, I am studying. Currently I'm roughly halfway through writing my own herbal compendium, as the books I've come across so far just have not been suitable to me. Even if they were it's been a great way of truly getting to know the plants I work with! I've also been interested in studying the connection between neuroanatomy and magick, which is kind of a slower going longer term study, and when my herbal compendium is finished I want to do one on animals. Besides this I'll learn about various things sporadically that catch my interest, documentaries I may come across or library books I stumble by that sound interesting to me. To me as a hedge witch learning is one's greatest gift and skill!
