I love your takes on Simon!!! Especially your analysis of Eden. I have a slightly different (but related) take on what went down. I think Eden was kinda collapsing after the death of the Tree, there was a lot of turmoil and internal power struggles, so Filament was meant to be an incitement of war to either coup the Father or for the Father to regain control. Simon was left behind on purpose and not told about the whole plan bc he’s a loose canon.
I’m really into political stuff and the tenuous grasp on power is just so compelling. It makes people do awful things. And that specific situation happens all the time in cults, schisms from an object of worship/tenet being destroyed are like the number one reason for cults to break up
I did a post with some more of my thoughts, but I really love yours. I feel like we have very similar inclinations for how we engage in fandom. My favorite part is logicing it all out
I don't think Filament Station was entirely a ploy to get rid of Simon. I actually agree with you on that Filament was probably their biggest incitement of war to date, and it was going down one way or another.
That being said, they for sure abandoned Simon on purpose. He was their deadliest weapon, and yet showing signs of sedition. They were not about to let the scariest dude they knew turn against the station. I do think there was some fear happening there.
I'm also really into political stuff and don't shy away from the gritty parallels to real life. I fell in love with storytelling long ago and Iron Lung has just been a good place to throw my excess creative energy into the wall.
I also love logic-ing things out, but I also love making things dramatic, so sometimes I'll bend the rules a little. I think that's fair game in sci-fi writing!
