Detective's rescue

The Upper Ring of Ba Sing Se had a way of making people feel small, though you had never once let it do that to you.

Its streets were too clean, its walls too polished, its gardens too deliberate. Even the ponds seemed arranged to reflect only the best angles of the city. Ba Sing Se liked appearances. It liked order, ceremony, and silence where silence was convenient.

You liked truth.

And truth, in your experience, was almost always under the surface.

You stood with your hands clasped behind your back at the edge of a broad stone walkway, watching a pair of Dai Li agents pretend not to watch the passing crowds. Their expressions were flat, unreadable. Their gloves were immaculate. They stood like carved figures, but their eyes moved too much. That was how you always knew.

A messenger had tipped you off two days ago: a flying bison had been taken through the city, hidden under official transport, escorted in secret.

A ridiculous rumor, if it had come from anyone else.

But in Ba Sing Se, the ridiculous was often the most carefully buried.

You tilted your head as the evening wind shifted, carrying voices from the outer path below.

“See? I told you this place is impossible,” came a boy’s voice, frustrated and quick. “How are we supposed to find one giant flying bison in the biggest city in the world?”

Another voice, calmer and gentler. “Complaining isn’t helping, Sokka.”

You stepped closer to the balustrade and looked down.

There were four of them on the lower road. Two girls, two boys. Travelers by the look of them, though not ordinary ones. One was a little girl in green with a self-assured stance and bare feet, tapping the stone like she owned it. The taller girl beside her had water tribe clothing and the kind of alert posture that said she trusted no city with walls this high. A bald boy with tattoos looked upward with open concern, and then there was the other one—

The one who had been complaining.

His hair was pulled into a warrior’s wolf tail. His clothes marked him as Water Tribe too, though his expression was all sharp wit and impatience. He looked tired, worried, and stubborn enough to argue with the earth itself. He was also, annoyingly, handsome.

As if sensing the weight of your attention, he looked up.

Your eyes met.

He froze for half a second.

Then he said, loudly, “Wow. Ba Sing Se really does have dramatic balconies.”

The little blind girl snorted. “You flirting with architecture again, Snoozles?”

You allowed one brow to rise. “If you’re searching for directions, shouting at buildings is an inefficient method.”

The boy grinned immediately, as if your dry tone were an invitation instead of a warning. “Good to know. Do you offer better methods, or just commentary?”

You should have walked away.

Instead, you found yourself saying, “That depends. Are you lost tourists, or are you looking for something no one in this city wants you to find?”

That got their full attention.

The bald boy stepped forward. “You know something?”

The water tribe girl moved with him, wary. “Who are you?”

You took the stairs down at your own pace, letting them wait. By the time you reached the lower path, the blind girl had angled her head toward you with unnerving accuracy.

“You walk like you think everyone should move out of your way,” she said.

You smiled faintly. “Usually they do.”

She grinned back at once. “Oh, I like her.”

The taller girl did not. You could feel that much immediately.

“I asked who you are,” she repeated.

You stopped a few feet from them. “Someone who hears things. Someone who knows this city far better than you do. And someone who may be willing to help—if you stop looking at me like I’m about to rob you.”

The boy—Sokka, apparently—crossed his arms. “To be fair, this city has been weird from the start. We’re not exactly in a trusting mood.”

“And yet,” you replied, “you’re desperate enough to talk to a stranger.”

The bald one glanced between you and his friends. His worry sat so plainly on his face that it softened your tone despite yourself.

“My name is Aang,” he said. “Our sky bison, Appa, was taken. We think he’s here.”

You nodded once. “I know.”

Sokka took one quick step toward you. “You know where he is?”

“I know that an enormous creature was moved through the city under unusual secrecy. I know the Dai Li have been more active than usual around certain storage compounds. And I know you’ll never get near any of it by asking politely.”

Katara’s suspicion sharpened. “Why help us?”

Because you hated secrets built on suffering. Because Ba Sing Se devoured truth and called it peace. Because if the city had caged a creature loyal enough to carry children across the world, then the city deserved to be cracked open for it.

But you only said, “Because I’m curious.”

Toph barked a laugh. “That’s either honest or terrifying.”

“Both,” you said.

Sokka’s mouth twitched. “I’m starting to like this plan.”

Katara shot him a look. “You’d like any plan if it sounded clever enough.”

He put a hand to his chest. “That is deeply unfair. I also like plans if they involve survival.”

You should not have noticed how his grin looked when he was trying to lighten the fear in the group. You especially should not have liked it.

Unfortunately, you did.

### The arrangement

You led them through a maze of side streets where the city shed some of its polished face. Here, the stone was cracked, the lanterns dimmer, the walls older. Ba Sing Se breathed differently away from official eyes.

As you walked, you explained only what was necessary.

“There’s a supply route used by officials who don’t want records attached to certain shipments,” you said. “One of the compounds along it changed guards three times in one week. That never happens unless something valuable—or dangerous—is inside.”

“Appa’s both,” Sokka said.

Aang’s face fell. “He’s not dangerous.”

You glanced back. “Not to you.”

Toph walked beside you as if you had known each other for years. “So you’re an earthbender.”

“Yes.”

“Good one?”

“Yes.”

She smirked. “I really like her.”

Katara folded her arms. “She certainly likes herself.”

You turned your head just enough to meet her eyes. “Confidence offends people who mistake it for arrogance.”

“Sometimes it is arrogance.”

“Sometimes people are simply correct.”

Sokka made a strangled sound that might have been a laugh he was trying not to let out. Katara heard it and looked even less pleased.

You almost smiled.

By the time you reached an overlook above a walled service yard, dusk had deepened into violet. The compound below looked mundane on purpose: plain stone buildings, narrow courtyards, guarded gates. But you had seen enough hidden places to know when “boring” was a disguise.

“There,” you said quietly. “Two exits. Six visible guards. Probably more inside.”

Sokka crouched beside you. “Okay. Finally, something I understand. A dangerous mission with terrible odds.”

You looked sidelong at him. “You sound delighted.”

“I’m not delighted,” he whispered. “I’m coping.”

The honesty of it surprised a laugh out of you.

He blinked at the sound, then stared for half a second too long.

It did something inconvenient to your chest.

Aang peered over the ledge. “We should go now.”

“No,” you said at once. “We watch first. Rushing gets people caught.”

“We don’t have time to wait!”

“And if you charge in blind, you’ll lose what little chance you have.”

He looked ready to argue, but Toph spoke first. “She’s right, Twinkle Toes. The ground under this place feels weird. Lots of tunnels. Reinforced ones.”

You frowned. “Tunnels?”

Toph nodded. “Like badgers had a meeting with paranoid politicians.”

Sokka sighed. “Great. Of course there are secret tunnels. Why can’t anything in our lives ever just be in a room?”

You looked at him. “Because then what would you complain about?”

He grinned. “You know, I’m getting the feeling you enjoy this.”

“Enjoy what?”

“Me.”

Katara groaned softly. “Sokka.”

You held his gaze a moment too long on purpose. “You are very sure of yourself for someone crouching in dust.”

He leaned closer, lowering his voice. “And you’re very sure of yourself for someone who still hasn’t admitted I’m charming.”

“Charming is not the word I’d choose.”

“See? You thought of a word.”

You looked away before your expression could betray you.

Toph was grinning like a menace.

The first part went smoothly. Too smoothly.

You dropped into the yard with Toph while Aang, Katara, and Sokka circled toward the rear gate. Stone shifted under your feet like obedient water. With two sharp motions, you raised a low wall to block the sightline from the nearest guard tower. Toph sank another guard to his knees in the earth before he could shout.

“Show-off,” she said.

“You say that like it’s an insult.”

“It’s not.”

Inside the first building, however, there was no Appa. Only crates, chained doors, and evidence of recent movement. Scratch marks gouged the floor stones. The kind a creature with claws and panic might make.

Aang touched them with trembling fingers. “He was here.”

“Recently,” you said.

Sokka and the others slipped in through the back moments later.

Katara took in the empty room and rounded on you immediately. “You said this was the place.”

“I said it was one of them.”

“That’s a very important difference.”

“Yes,” you snapped, “which is why I made it clear.”

Aang looked between the marks on the floor and the corridor ahead. “Then we keep going.”

You all moved deeper into the compound, following the signs of transport into the tunnels below. The air grew cooler, damper, and harder to breathe. Torchlight flickered over reinforced stone. Whoever built this place had not wanted escape.

Halfway down the second tunnel, Toph stopped.

“Wait.”

You felt it a heartbeat later: vibration through the rock, too many footfalls at once.

“Ambush,” you hissed.

The walls burst open.

Stone-gloved hands shot from concealed panels. Dai Li agents flooded the corridor in disciplined silence, sleeves snapping, boots scraping, faces expressionless. Aang reacted first, air blasting forward, but the space was too narrow. Katara’s water whipped from her pouch and froze one agent’s wrists. Toph slammed a wave of rock through the floor.

You drove your heel down and sent a jagged column up beneath two agents, hurling them into the ceiling.

Sokka fought without bending, club and sword flashing in the torchlight. He moved like someone who had learned to survive among people stronger than him and refused to let that matter. Fast, clever, infuriatingly brave.

You liked that too much.

“Left side!” he shouted.

You turned in time to block a stone fist aimed at your ribs. The impact jarred your whole arm. You countered hard, twisting the tunnel wall into a crushing arc that pinned the attacker.

Then the floor shifted wrong.

Your own momentum carried you forward as the stone beneath you gave way—a trap panel, disguised and timed. The ground vanished under your feet.

For one sick instant there was nothing.

Then you were falling into darkness.

You slammed one hand out, trying to catch the wall with bending, but the shaft was lined with smooth fitted stone, too slick and too narrow to grip properly at that angle. Your shoulder struck hard. Pain flashed white across your vision.

Above, someone shouted your name.

No—Sokka didn’t know your name. He shouted anyway.

“Hey!”

Then another shape launched after you.

You collided with him halfway down, both of you twisting in the dark. Instinct took over. You shoved one palm toward the shaft wall and forced a ring of stone inward just enough to slow you both. The jolt nearly tore your arm from its socket, but it worked. You skidded to a brutal stop on a slanted ledge of your own making, Sokka half sprawled across you, breathing hard.

Silence rang in your ears.

Then he lifted his head. “Okay,” he said shakily. “That was either incredibly heroic or incredibly stupid.”

You stared at him. “You jumped after me?”

“Well, I wasn’t going to let you smash into the bottom alone.”

“You absolute idiot.”

He gave a breathless laugh. “You say the sweetest things when I save your life.”

You pushed at his shoulder and sat up, wincing. The shaft above disappeared into black. Too high to hear the others clearly now. Dust drifted through the torchless dark.

“You could have died.”

“So could you.”

“I had it handled.”

He was quiet for half a second. “Did you?”

The question struck harder than it should have.

No one in Ba Sing Se asked you that. They either doubted you from the start or assumed you would land on your feet because you always had before. They did not leap into holes after you. They did not look at you like your danger mattered.

You turned away first. “Mostly.”

“Mostly,” he repeated. “Great. I feel much better.”

Despite yourself, you huffed a laugh.

Above, faintly, Toph’s voice echoed down the shaft. “You two alive or what?”

“Unfortunately!” Sokka shouted back.

You called up, “We’re on a ledge. Find another route. The shaft walls are engineered.”

Toph shouted something that sounded like agreement. Aang’s voice followed, strained with worry, then faded with the others as they moved.

That left only the dark, the stone, and Sokka beside you.

He shifted carefully. “Can you stand?”

“Yes.”

You rose to prove it and immediately felt your injured shoulder protest. The ledge extended into a narrow maintenance passage, barely wide enough for one person at a time.

Sokka noticed your flinch at once. “That’s not a yes.”

“It’s still a yes.”

“You are the most stubborn person I’ve ever met.”

“Impossible. I just met you.”

That earned a grin. Softer this time.

He looked different in the dark. Less performative somehow. The sarcasm was still there, but not as armor; more like warmth. Human warmth, pressed against fear so it did not freeze.

“We should move,” he said. “Before your secret tunnel friends come back.”

You took the lead through the narrow passage, one hand trailing the wall. Without open light, you bent by feel—texture, density, seams in the stone. Old work. Maintenance shafts built into the foundation. Useful, if one knew how to listen.

Behind you, Sokka kept close.

After a few moments he said, “So. Do you have a name, or were you planning to remain mysterious forever?”

You hesitated, then gave it.

He repeated it under his breath, as though testing it. You hated how much you liked hearing him say it.

“And you’re Sokka,” you said.

“Wow. You remembered.”

“Your voice carries.”

“That means yes.”

You rolled your eyes even though he probably couldn’t see it.

The passage curved and dropped. At one point the ceiling lowered enough that you had to crouch. Sokka’s shoulder brushed yours in the tight space. Heat flared where he touched you. Annoying.

“You and Katara always fight like that?” he asked quietly.

“We have exchanged perhaps ten sentences.”

“Exactly.”

“She distrusts me.”

“She distrusts everyone.”

“Not like this.”

“No,” he admitted. “Not like this.”

You stopped where the passage opened into a wider chamber with old support pillars. Thin roots had worked their way through cracks overhead. You pressed your palm to one pillar, listening.

“Why?” you asked.

Sokka leaned against the wall beside you. “You really want my guess?”

“Not especially. But go on.”

He considered. “I think you remind her of people who think they can handle everything alone.”

The words landed too neatly.

You kept your face neutral. “And that bothers her?”

“It worries her.”

“She doesn’t know me.”

“No,” he said. “But I’m starting to think she pegged one thing right.”

You looked at him then.

The chamber was dim, lit only by a grating overhead where city light slipped through in pale strips. Enough to see his expression. No mockery in it. No challenge. Just frustrating insight.

“I do handle things alone,” you said.

“Yeah.”

“I do not need rescuing.”

He gave you a look. “You literally got rescued ten minutes ago.”

“I was slowing my fall.”

“By hitting every surface on the way down?”

You glared. He smiled.

Then his smile faded. “For what it’s worth, I didn’t jump because I thought you were helpless.”

You said nothing.

He scratched the back of his neck. “I jumped because leaving you would have felt wrong.”

That was worse.

Much worse.

You turned away and placed both hands on the floor, focusing on the path of vibrations through the chamber. There—hollow space beyond the eastern wall, and movement. Heavy movement.

Your pulse jumped. “Wait.”

Sokka straightened. “What?”

You moved to the wall, pressing your ear close though you did not need to. There it was again: a muffled thud, then a low, familiar rumble.

Aang had described Appa enough times. Massive. Restless. Heavy in a way that had life in it.

“It’s him,” you whispered.

Sokka was instantly beside you. “You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

You spread your stance and drove both hands forward. The wall groaned, seams cracking wide. Stone peeled back in two slabs, revealing a hidden holding chamber beyond.

And there he was.

Appa filled most of the room, fur matted, saddled, chained at the legs and neck to anchored rings in the floor. His eyes widened at the sight of strangers, and he let out a low, exhausted growl.

Sokka breathed, “We found him.”

For one suspended second, triumph cut through everything.

Then alarms sounded.

### The rescue

“Of course,” Sokka muttered. “Why does victory always come with terrible timing?”

Boots thundered somewhere above and beyond the chamber. The hidden room had not gone unnoticed.

Appa strained against the chains, agitated.

“It’s okay,” you said, stepping carefully forward. “Easy.”

Sokka looked at you. “You know he could crush us, right?”

“Yes.”

“Just checking.”

Appa’s nostrils flared. He smelled fear, pain, strange air, confinement. You knew enough about frightened animals to keep your movements steady. Slow. Certain. The chains were heavy forged steel fastened into earth-anchored sockets.

“You can break these?” Sokka asked.

“Not cleanly. But I can pull the anchors.”

“Good enough.”

You knelt and pressed your palm to the floor. The anchoring stones were reinforced, but not immovable. You felt their placement, their stress points, the old mortar packed around them. Then you ripped upward.

The first socket burst free with a shower of rock.

Appa bellowed, jerking one foreleg back. The chain dragged loose.

Sokka rushed to the next restraint, hacking at a leather binding with his sword where metal met harness. “Come on, buddy, we’re getting you out.”

You worked in brutal, precise motions, tearing loose anchor after anchor while the chamber shook with approaching guards. Pain lanced through your shoulder each time you struck, but you ignored it.

The door exploded inward.

Three Dai Li agents entered at once, stone gloves forming. Sokka was between them and you before you could move.

“Hey!” he shouted. “Ugly gloves! Over here!”

He ducked the first strike, slammed his club into an agent’s wrist, pivoted, and took another in the knee. He did not have bending, but he fought like someone who refused to concede the category of impossible.

You finished the final anchor and yanked Appa’s neck chain free.

“Down!” you shouted.

Sokka dropped instantly.

You swept both arms wide, and the chamber floor heaved upward beneath the agents, launching them into the far wall. Stone cuffs snapped uselessly in midair. Appa roared and surged to his feet now that the chains were loose, shaking the whole room.

More footsteps. Too many.

“We need the others,” Sokka said.

“No time.”

“Then we make time.”

You knew your period was coming the second you woke up with that dull, twisting ache in your stomach.

By the time afternoon rolled around, the cramps had sharpened, your back hurt, and every little thing felt irritating in a way that made no logical sense. So when Bolin bounced into the apartment carrying groceries and nearly sang your name, you just groaned and pulled the blanket tighter around yourself.

He stopped mid-step.

“Whoa,” he said, setting the bags down. “That sounded bad. Are you okay?”

You squinted at him from the couch. “Do I look okay?”

Bolin hurried over, concern replacing his usual grin in an instant. “No. Definitely no. What happened? Are you sick? Did you get hurt? Did someone do something? Because I can absolutely—”

“Bolin.”

He stopped.

“It’s just my period.”

He blinked. “Oh.”

A pause.

Then, cautiously, “Okay. That’s... the monthly thing.”

You stared at him.

He lifted a finger. “I know more than that. Probably.”

Despite the pain, a laugh slipped out of you. “That is not reassuring.”

“It wasn’t meant to be,” he admitted.

You shifted, trying and failing to get comfortable. Bolin noticed immediately, his face softening.

“Hey,” he said, crouching by the couch, “what do you need?”

You let your head fall back against the cushion. “Something warm. Painkillers. Maybe tea.”

He nodded with sudden determination. “Done. I’m on it.”

The first time Bolin handled your period, it was chaos.

He returned with painkillers, tea that was definitely too sweet, a hot water bottle wrapped in three towels, two kinds of noodles, chocolate, dried fruit, and—somehow—a little stuffed platypus-bear.

You frowned at the toy. “What is that for?”

He held it out to you solemnly. “Emotional support.”

You stared at him for a second, then laughed hard enough to regret it immediately.

“Ow—okay, don’t make me laugh.”

“Sorry! Sorry.” He looked genuinely distressed. “I’m still learning.”

That much was obvious.

But Bolin stayed with you the whole evening, adjusting the blanket when it slipped, handing you tea before you asked, and rubbing your back with clumsy but well-meaning circles whenever the cramps got especially bad.

That had been months ago.

Now, he was better at it than you were.

You came home one evening feeling off in the way you always did the day before it started—heavy, tired, annoyed at nothing. You barely got the door shut behind you before Bolin looked up from where he was sitting on the floor with Pabu in his lap.

He took one look at your face and said, “Your period’s about to start.”

You stopped in the middle of taking your shoes off. “Excuse me?”

Bolin’s eyes widened, like he hadn’t meant to say it out loud.

“I just meant—uh—I noticed—”

“You noticed.”

He stood, carefully setting Pabu aside. “Please don’t be mad.”

You crossed your arms. “Why would I be mad?”

“Because maybe it’s weird that I can tell.”

You watched him squirm for another second before asking, “How can you tell?”

He rubbed the back of his neck. “You get quieter. And you have this look on your face like if one person says something stupid, you might throw them into Yue Bay.”

You considered that. “That’s fair.”

His shoulders dropped in relief. “Okay, good.”

Then his expression brightened. “Wait here.”

Before you could answer, he darted into the bathroom and came back with a small basket.

You blinked.

Inside were pads, painkillers, your favorite tea, a heating pad, ginger candies, dark chocolate, and the fuzzy socks you’d thought you’d lost weeks ago.

You looked up at him slowly. “Bolin.”

He suddenly seemed very interested in the wall behind you. “I made you a period kit.”

“You made me a period kit.”

“Yeah.” His voice turned sheepish. “You always seem miserable when it sneaks up on you, so I thought maybe if everything was already together, it’d make things easier.”

For a moment, you didn’t know what to say.

It was such a Bolin thing to do—sweet and practical and just earnest enough to make your chest ache in a completely different way.

“You are ridiculous,” you said softly.

His face fell. “Bad ridiculous?”

You reached for the basket, then for his wrist, tugging him closer. “No. Sweet ridiculous.”

His grin came back instantly. “Oh. Good. I like being that kind.”

You guided him down onto the couch beside you and leaned into his side. Almost automatically, his arm settled around your shoulders.

“I also,” he said carefully, “sort of know when it’s due now.”

You tilted your head up. “You what?”

He raised both hands. “Not in a creepy way. In a helpful way! You said once that you hated being caught off guard, so I started counting the days.”

You stared at him.

Then you laughed, softer this time.

“Bolin,” you said, “are you tracking my cycle?”

He winced. “When you say it like that, it sounds alarming.”

“It is a little alarming.”

“I can stop.”

You looked at the basket again. At the heating pad. The tea. The chocolate. The socks.

Then you shook your head. “No. Don’t stop.”

His eyes lit up. “Really?”

“Really.”

He beamed, then reached for your hand and squeezed it gently.

“Good,” he said. “Because I was thinking I could give you a heads-up next time. Like, ‘Hey, y/n, your body may betray you within the next forty-eight hours, so I brought snacks.’”

You laughed and leaned against him again, closing your eyes.

“That is such a weirdly specific act of love.”

Bolin went quiet for a second.

Then, softer than before, he said, “Well... yeah. I love you. So I want to help.”

The words settled warm in your chest, making something in you unclench.

You turned your face into his shoulder, smiling despite the ache in your stomach. “Then help by staying right here.”

Bolin pressed a kiss to the top of your head without hesitation. “Easy. That’s the part I’m best at.”

And when the cramps came in full later that night, he was ready before you even had to ask.

The world had ended twice already.

First when the Maze doors slammed shut behind you, trapping you forever with its stone teeth and shifting walls. Second when you ran for the Glade, blood in your eyes and screams in your ears, only to lose the last shred of light forever.

The Grievers had come that final night — a storm of metal and acid, tearing through the Glade like judgment. You’d fought beside Thomas, beside Minho, dagger in hand and heart pounding. You’d always been the one they relied on — the mapper who memorized every corridor’s turn, who could lead them through blind spots in the dark. Independent to a fault, sharp‑tongued and quick, the girl who never needed saving.

Until you did.

A Griever’s tail had whipped through the chaos, catching you across the face. The acid burned, searing through flesh and nerve until darkness swallowed everything. You’d collapsed, screaming, as hands dragged you toward the closing doors. Thomas’s voice, Minho’s. Someone shouting your name.

And Gally’s roar, somewhere behind — “Get her out!” — before the world went black.

You’d heard his body hit the ground. Heard the wet tear of claws.

You’d thought he was dead.

Now, weeks later, the world had shrunk to echoes and ache. WICKED had captured you and Minho during the chaos of escape, hauling you to this concrete prison buried deep underground. You sat against cold stone, knees drawn up, listening. Minho breathed raggedly beside you, chained to the wall. “They’ll come,” he muttered for the hundredth time. “Thomas’ll come.”

You didn’t answer. Independence had been your armor once — mapping the Maze solo, charting routes no one else saw. Now it was gone, stripped away with your sight. You were broken glass, jagged but useless.

Footsteps echoed down the corridor. Heavy. Multiple.

“Stay sharp,” Minho whispered.

The cell door screeched open. Boots scuffed concrete. A voice — rough, familiar, edged with something desperate — cut through the dark.

“Get her up. Now.”

Your breath stopped.

That voice. Gravel and fire. Gally.

Impossible.

You turned your head blindly toward the sound, heart slamming against your ribs. “Gally?” The word cracked, raw and small.

Silence. Then a sharp inhale.

He was alive.

Rough hands gripped your arms, hauling you upright. You stumbled, disoriented, every sense screaming. The guards — WICKED’s men — laughed as they unchained you, shoving you forward. Minho snarled curses, but you barely heard.

Gally’s voice again, closer now, low and furious. “Careful with her, shanks, or I’ll—”

“She’s blind, not broken,” one guard sneered. “Maze got her good, huh?”

Your stomach twisted. Blind. They said it like it was nothing. Like you were nothing.

They marched you down endless halls — left, right, down stairs that made your knees buckle. You counted steps out of habit, mapping by sound alone. Dripping water. Distant machinery. Gally’s boots, always a pace behind, tense and watchful.

Why was he here? Why alive? You’d mourned him in the dark nights after the escape, replaying his last shout, the thud of his fall. You’d hated him too — for pushing you away, for calling you reckless, for the way his glares always lingered too long on your maps, your hands, your face.

And now he breathed the same poisoned air.

They shoved you into a room that smelled of rust and damp earth. A chair scraped. Someone forced you down, wrists rebound behind your back. Minho landed beside you with a grunt.

“Talk,” a cold voice demanded — Ava Paige, you guessed from the Gladers’ stories. “The serum. The memories. Everything.”

Minho spat. “Go to hell.”

You stayed silent, head high despite the void. Independence was all you had left.

Then Gally spoke — not to them, but to you. “You okay?”

Your throat closed. His voice was so close — just across the table, you thought. Rougher than you remembered, threaded with something raw. Guilt?

“I’m fine,” you lied.

A pause. “Like shuck hell you are.”

Paige’s voice cut in, clinical. “Subject G-47. Immune. Recovered from Maze Trial 3. You’ll assist the extraction.”

Gally’s reply was ice. “Yeah. Whatever.”

The interrogation dragged — questions about the Right Arm, Thomas, the serum. You gave nothing. Minho nothing. Your world narrowed to sound: Paige’s pen scratching, guards shifting, Minho’s steady breaths.

And Gally.

Always Gally — his chair creaking as he leaned forward, fingers drumming the table like he used to in Council meetings. Once, when a guard got too close and you flinched at the movement you couldn’t see, Gally snarled, “Back off.”

The room went still.

Paige continued. But you heard it in his voice — the fracture. The same fracture you carried.

Hours later — or minutes, time blurred in darkness — they dragged you back to your cell. Minho first, then you. Your legs gave halfway, exhaustion and vertigo crashing together. You hit your knees hard.

Strong arms caught you before you fell fully.

“Easy,” Gally muttered, low enough the guards wouldn’t hear. His grip steadied you — calloused palms under your elbows, chest solid against your shoulder. He smelled like sweat and metal and something achingly familiar: the Glade’s dry earth.

You froze, every nerve alive where he touched. “Let go.”

“Not ‘til you’re steady.”

The guards laughed, shoving you both apart. But as the door slammed shut, leaving you alone in the dark cell, Gally didn’t leave.

“You’re really here,” you whispered, voice breaking. “I thought—”

“Yeah.” His back hit the wall beside you. “Thought I was a goner too.”

Silence stretched. You hugged your knees, fighting tears you refused to shed. Independent. Always independent.

“What happened to you?” he asked finally.

“Griever tail. Acid.” You swallowed. “Sight’s gone.”

A sharp breath. “Klunk.”

“Don’t.” Your voice sharpened. “Don’t pity me.”

“Not pity.” His tone roughened. “Anger. Should’ve been there. Should’ve—”

“Stop.” You turned toward his voice, blind eyes useless. “You were dead. I saw it.”

“You saw wrong.”

“Stop treating me like glass,” you snapped one night, shoving the bread away. It tumbled to the floor.

He didn’t flinch. Picked it up, brushed it off, pressed it back. “Not glass. You.”

“Broken.”

His hand caught your wrist — firm, not gentle. “Never.”

But when Orcs marched down from the mountains in the long-ago war, and your folk sent for aid, no elf returned. Their arrows protected their own borders, and by dawn your people’s homes lay blackened.

You had been a child then — just old enough to remember the firelight. Too young to understand politics, just old enough to understand abandonment. So you learned to trust what did not lie: stars, wind, and your own endurance.

When you answered the call to Rivendell, it was not for elf‑lords. It was for the chance to walk the lands as mapper to the Fellowship of the Ring.

You vowed, silently, to keep your maps clean of elven influence.

The valley of Imladris was finer than any tale had promised — silver rivers spilling through pine, starlight like voices caught in bloom. When you arrived, you felt it at once: that keen, high stillness of the immortal. It pressed around you like some gentle hand upon the heart, half peace, half warning.

The Council Chamber was full of strange faces — Dwarves, Men, and Elves together beneath the same sky. You stood a little aside, hood low, parchment and quill bound to your waist. You thought yourself unseen; but one gaze found you nonetheless.

Legolas Greenleaf of the Woodland Realm was as unlike your imaginings as moonlight is to fire. He bore no arrogance in his manner, though every line of him spoke of otherworldly grace. Pale hair, keen eyes like sunlight on frost, voice soft but sure as streamwater. When your glance brushed his, you looked away at once.

It was Legolas who broke the silence when the company was named:

“If by my life or death I may protect it, I will.”

A cry escaped your lips. The mountain swallowed it.

But something caught you — a sharp, firm grasp on your forearm. The world steadied. You looked up to see him: Legolas, perched light as frost upon the narrow path, bow slung behind him, his other hand anchoring you.

“Do not move,” he said, calm against the wind.

You would have thanked him — perhaps — if not for the sting of pride that flared between you. “I had it.”

A faint, breathless laugh escaped him. “So you did.”

He hauled you up onto solid ground, his strength belying the ease of his frame. When you stood, shaking off snow, his eyes searched your face with earnest concern. “You are hurt?”

“Only my patience.”

A flicker of amusement warmed his features. “That heals quickly, I hope.”

You turned from him then lest he see the reluctant curve of your own mouth.

That night, huddled in the lee of stone, the cold settled deep. You winced as you unfastened your cloak — the fall had left a dark bruise along your ribs. You thought you hid it well until a shadow fell over you and a flask of balm touched your hand.

Legolas stood there, his expression unreadable in the dimming fire-glow. “For the pain,” he said simply.

You hesitated. “Is this pity?”

“It is care,” he replied softly. “If that offends you, forgive me.”

“Y/N?” A gentle voice drifted in before the man did. Remus paused on the threshold, as if unwilling to intrude until invited. The lamplight caught in the silver of his hair and the tired lines around his eyes.

I didn’t turn yet. “Is he okay?” The question tore out of me, and my fingers went slack; the spoon slipped from my hand and clattered against the side of the cauldron.

Remus moved at once, wand flicking. The spoon stilled mid-rattle and floated neatly to the table. “He’s alive,” he said softly. “We’ve stopped the bleeding. Fleur and Bill are with him—Molly too, of course. Fred and Bill have gone after the herbs you listed, rather heroically I might add, considering Fred tried to insist he knew the difference between asphodel and angelica.”

A breathy, broken laugh escaped me. “He doesn’t?”

“He absolutely does not,” Remus replied, mouth twitching. “But he’s willing to argue with me about it, which is probably a good sign.”

I exhaled slowly, reaching to adjust the flame beneath the cauldron. Blue fire licked the copper. I began sorting the ingredients I had: dried comfrey, dittany essence, finely sliced valerian.

Remus stepped further in, leaning against the opposite counter rather than looming over me. “I didn’t just come to give you news of George,” he said. “I came to check on you.” His gaze softened, sharpening at the same time in that way only he managed. “And on your… small secret.”

My knife hesitated mid-slice. I swallowed. “I suppose my little secret has a heartbeat loud enough, then?” I asked, keeping my eyes on the roots as I cut them into even pieces.

“Not loud,” he said quietly. “But… distinct.” A faint smile touched his face. “And rather noisy at the moment. I would say anxious. It takes after its mother.”

I huffed a weak laugh, blinking back tears. “That obvious, is it?”

“To someone like me? Yes.” He tilted his head. “Heightened senses have their unfortunate uses. You smell of fear and valerian, you’re exhausted, your magic is all over the place… and there’s another, smaller magic tangled up with yours. Very new. Very determined.”

My hand stilled. I gripped the edge of the counter. “Correct me if I’m mistaken…” he began, the tone almost like he was easing into a lecture, and I felt myself brace. “George does not know.”

I blinked hard, staring at the scarred wooden surface instead of his face. “I found out yesterday, Remus,” I whispered. “Only yesterday. I tried telling him before you all left, I really did, but he wouldn’t listen, he just—he said I should tell him when he came back and then you were all going and—” My voice cracked, and I pressed my hands over my face. “And now look at him.”

There was a pause, the quiet thick with simmering potion and night sounds through the open window. Then a chair scraped, and Remus sat, deliberately lowering himself to my level rather than drawing me up to his.

“Y/N,” he said, gentle but firm. “Listen to me.” I felt, more than saw, his hand hover, then rest lightly on my forearm—a question, not a demand. “George is stubborn. Spectacularly so. But he has an infuriating habit of surviving what he shouldn’t. I’ve watched that family for years. They fall, they break, they grieve… but they get back up.”

My shoulders shook. “He lost an ear, Remus.”

“He did.” His voice didn’t flinch from the truth. “And I won’t pretend that isn’t terrible. I won’t lie to you and say he’s fine. But he is alive. His pulse is strong. His mother is doing what she does best, which is terrorise everyone within reach into cooperating with her. And he has something—someone—to come back for.” His eyes flicked briefly to my still-flat stomach.

“I don’t even know how to tell him now,” I whispered. “Walk up to his bedside and say ‘by the way, I’m pregnant’ while he’s half-dead and joking about being holey?”

His mouth quirked. “I admit his timing for humour is… questionable. But his capacity for love is not.” He held my gaze. “Do you truly believe George Weasley would want to leave you alone with this? With all of this?” He gestured, encompassing the war, the Burrow, the cauldron, my shaking hands.

“No,” I said, barely audible.

“Then trust him to be who he is,” Remus replied. “Reckless, yes. Infuriating, certainly. But brave. Loyal. And absolutely besotted with you.”

I let out a wet laugh at that, tears spilling anyway.

He continued, voice softer. “When Tonks told me about Teddy, I was… ashamed of how I responded. I thought a child was another burden I’d placed on her. Another life I might endanger. I tried to run from it.” His gaze grew distant for a heartbeat. “She did not let me.”

“You tried to run,” I repeated, stunned.

He nodded once. “I was a coward. She was not. She reminded me that children are not burdens, Y/N. They are… reasons.” He looked back at me. “Reasons to come home. Reasons to fight a little harder. Reasons to brew potions at ridiculous hours while an overprotective werewolf loiters in the doorway.”

A shaky smile tugged at my lips. “You, overprotective? Never.”

“Don’t spread it around,” he said dryly. “I have a reputation to maintain.” Then, more gently, “You will tell George. Not tonight, perhaps. Not while he is drifting in and out and making terrible puns. But soon. When you can look at him without expecting the worst.”

I swallowed, nodding. “And until then?”

“Until then,” Remus said, rising to his feet, “you do what you’ve always done.” He gestured to the cauldron. “You brew. You fight the way you know how. You keep him tethered here, in every way you can. In your mind, in your heart, and in that small, very opinionated heartbeat you’re carrying.”

A tear slid down my cheek. I wiped it away with the back of my hand and picked up the knife again. “All right,” I breathed. “All right.”

He moved toward the door, then paused. “Y/N?”

“Yes?”

“When this is over,” he said quietly, “and George is complaining about how loud the baby is at three in the morning, I expect you to remind him that I predicted it first.”

A real laugh broke from my chest, sudden and bright. “Deal.”

Remus smiled, that tired, warm smile that always seemed half for himself and half for everyone else. “Good. Now, do try not to poison my former student. I’m rather fond of him.”

“I only poison Death Eaters,” I said, squaring my shoulders as I tipped the next ingredient into the cauldron. “Everyone else gets the good stuff.”

“Spoken like a true member of the Order,” he murmured, and left me to the soft bubbling of the potion and the steady, invisible rhythm of two hearts instead of one.

Fred, Bill and Fleur returned. Remus smiled at me standing up from his chair. “I believe you are left in great hands.” He spoke and left. Fred approached me and rub my back “How are you?” he asked and I stared at him and then at Fleur and Bill. “They know… soon you’ll have to tell it yourself.”

“I am fine. Remus says that baby bean is anxious and noisy. Probably because his father has a hole instead of an ear but who am I to judge.” I spoke trying to use humor.

I breathed in. And then out. If I saw him like this, I would shatter, and if he saw me, it would only make things worse.
