Hi, I'm Echo! I like comic books. I mostly read Marvel, but I'm planning to look into DC a little more one day. On this blog you will primarily find my comic fanart & writing, my comic thoughts, and my critical analysis.

You can consider me a Claws of the Cat (by Linda Fite and Marie Severin) enthusiast, as well as a sidekick Bucky Barnes enthusiast (although he's not bad as the Winter Soldier).

For the most part, I really like Tigra/Greer Grant-Nelson and Marvel's golden age characters (like the Invaders/All-Winners Squad, but I also really like Aarkus, the Angel, and the Moon Man).

The content I engage with and create is almost exclusively based on the comics (universe 616). I don't enjoy the movies, and my stance towards them will either be neutral or critical.

Do you think Jim did Toro's hair and that's why he had that horrific terrible no-good all-bad bowl cut? It's something that I wonder about sometimes. I can certainly picture Jim sitting him down and putting a bowl on his head because it's this clever hair-cutting hack he heard about. And then he takes the bowl off and it just looks *bad.* Like, *bad* bad. But it's a nifty and useful hack right? So it can't be that bad. Except it is that bad. Sorry.

"Who the fuck is Robin?" indeed. NEVER forget Bucky's real, canon, and *remarkably* petty beef with Robin.

(To be fair, it's not Robin specific. Little sidekick Bucky beefed with any other kid sidekick he could, just for the love of the game. Holy overcompensation, Cap!)

I find it really hilarious when people start comparing Bucky and Robin like yeah there’s some similarities. You know Child sidekicks, but sidekick Bucky was just killing people. Steve was letting his son/brother figure run around with guns causing terror on the western front. And I find that really hilarious.

I'd say the sidekick who's more of a Robin copy (sorry to say it little buddy, I love you though) is Toro, but since Bucky has the privilege of actually being widely known, he's the one who gets the brunt of the comparison. Still, it *is* really funny how bloodthirsty Bucky was as a kid. I don't think I can say that the retcons (mostly Brubaker but I suppose the silver/bronze age depictions too) necessarily toned it down, but they did make it more serious, I guess. It goes from "okay kid, here's a gun! Go mow down some criminals and Nazis and eldritch horrors with your new best pal Captain America!" to "teaching a kid since childhood that he's fodder for the battlefield (as soldiers are) is going to seriously warp his understanding of the severity of death and that's going to kick him in the face at full-force later on" (see: Captain America & Bucky #621).

Of course, all that serious crap aside, he *was* just killing people. And it was really funny. That kid loved his guns. And in the golden age with Timely, when the characters were all static and more gimmick than cohesive character, the biggest difference between Timely-era Bucky and Toro that I can give as briefly as possible was that, while they were both very much bloodthirsty and energetic, Bucky was more nonchalant/violent when getting into trouble, whereas Toro was more explosive and tended to cry about it, if that makes sense. I'd make a golden age era Robin comparison but alas, I don't really do DC (or National Allied Publications I guess, if I'm making the Timely distinction LMAO). I know golden age era Batman wielded a gun once or twice, but I think I'd be surprised if Robin had. Then again, golden age comics are weird as hell, lmao.

Nothing goes crazier than imagining a team-up between two characters who are literally never going to have a team-up ever. But believe me when I tell you that Tigra and Toro would make for *crazy* narrative foils. Believe me.
