Underrated Chicago songwriting gem Mike Martello recently put out a new album with his project, Sheep Numbers. It’s called Talking Backwards, and if you play it backwards it sounds like a message from the Devil. However, if you play it forward, the way I’m assuming it is intended to be played, it’s a celebration of weirdo pop in baroque lo-fi fashion. Heavy nods to fun, early 2000s indie pop styles, friendly chord structures and scales weave throughout the album, while clever verse gratify the intellectual listener.  - C.R.
