the  o’lachlans  have  an  extensive  ancestry  that  has  been  intertwined  with  the  history  of  portum.  since  the  beginnings  of  the  sanctuary  town  for  the  occult  of  1693,  early  reports  of  the  settlement  wrote  of  an  extremely  large  mountain  lion  that  prowled  the  cloud  forest  —  a  guardian,  the  eyes  and  ears  of  its  magical  borders.  it  was  eventually  revealed  that  the  sightings  of  these  apex  predators  were  not  actual  mountain  lions  …  it  was  miles’  shifter  ancestors  !

like  all  of  portum’s  residents,  his  ancestors  did  not  remember  how  they  arrived  at  the  dense  forestland  that  is  now  portum  nor  how  long  —-  they  were  early  settlers  in  an  eastern  region  of  taiga  forests,  shifters  of  lynx  and  other  predators  that  soon  dispersed  across  the  continent.  we’ll  focus  on  the  lineage  of  shifters  that  turn  into  mountain  lions  :’)

miles  was  born  and  raised  within  portum  for  his  human  side;  however,  the  o’lachlans  are  dedicated  to  living  a  lot  of  their  time  on  this  earth  as  mountain  lions.  they  often  left  the  boundaries  of  portum’s  dense  forest  to  migrate  across  the  wildlands  —  the  majority  of  his  family  are  also  archeologists,  cartographers,  botanists,  geologists,  and  ecologists.

the  familiarity  of  watching  the  lion  king  on  vhs  with  his  kids  on  the  couch,  mufasa  walking  alongside  simba  as  he  lectures  about  the  delicate  balance  of  the  circle  of  life,  respecting  all  creatures  from  the  crawling  ant  to  the  leaping  antelope.  same  goes  for  his  children  —  respecting  all  creatures,  especially  when  they  reside  in  a  town  where  people  are  vastly  different  from  each  other

at  the  age  of  eighteen,  miles  leaves  portum  to  pursue  his  studies  at  universities  in  america’s  west,  honing  in  on  his  studies  as  a  wildlife  biologist.  (  if  anyone  asked  where  miles  was  from,  his  lil’  white  lie  was  that  he  was  from  a  small,  mountainous  town  in  montana  )

after  a  decade  of  venturing  around  north  america  and  contributing  to  various  research  publications,  miles  returns  back  to  portum  to  use  the  knowledge  he  had  learned  outside  of  portum  (  and  the  knowledge  of  the  supernatural  and  magic  )  to  further  study  the  climate,  ecology  and  find  answers  to  the  mysteries  behind  portum’s  mysterious  ways  of  existing  outside  the  bounds  of  reality

miles’  shifter  form  is  abnormally  strong  and  large  in  stature  compared  to  grown,  male  mountain  lions.  the  straight  -  face  miles  had  to  make  when  he  hears  of  reported  sightings  during  the  70s  of  the  biggest  mountain  someone  has  ever  seen  (  he  hates  lying  ).  def  he  can  take  on  his  Pantherinae  counterparts  and  other  supernatural  creatures  (  at  least  put  up  a  good  fight  )

love,  love,  LOVEESSS  being  a  father  !!  there  is  some  Tension  between  him  and  his  father  /  grandfather  bc  the  majority  of  miles’  children  are  adopted  (  and  not  completely  a  shifter  ).  miles  says  idgaf  i  love  my  spouse  and  my  children  …  and  anyone  else  i  pseudo  -  parent

this  nymph’s  beginning  derives  from  a  spring  morning  in  a  valley  of  a  bed  of  vibrant  wildflowers,  fed  aplenty  by  the  nutrients  provided  by  volcanic  soil.  the  matriarch  of  this  montane  region  caresses  her  soft  features  and  whispers  about  the  greatness  of  the  300,000-year-old  mountain  that  observes  the  luscious  land  it  scars  and  nourishes.  the  nymphs  of  this  realm  see  the  formation  as  somewhat  patriarch  —  relying  on  it  for  protection  &  support  of  the  nature  they  coexist  with  and  preserve.

hundreds  of  years  seem  to  fly  by  for  both  the  nymph  and  the  stratovolcano,  the  both  of  them  transforming  in  not  just  the  physical  sense.  she  matures  —  experiencing  the  complex  inner workings  of  nature,  her  responsibilities  and  honing  in  on  her  magical  abilities.  she  learns  to  manipulate  the  earth  and  its  elements  as  the  mountain  flows  with  andesite  lava  and  erupts  with  layers  in  ash,  forming  its  summit  and  the  highest  peak  in  its  history.  

“  is  it  angry  at  us,  mama  ?  is  it  hurting  ?  ”  the  young  nymph  queries  as  she  flickers  her  gaze  up  towards  her  mother,  the  ground  trembling  beneath  her  toes  as  the  mountain  exhales  plumes  of  volcanic  ash  from  a  distance.  “  no,  my  love.  this  is  not  anger  at  any  one  of  us  —  this  is  a  natural  process  of  destruction  that  brings  on  opportunities  for  new,  plentiful  life  and  replenishes  the  soils  that  grow  our  flora.  it  may  seem  like  unbridled  fury,  my  sapling,  but  it  is  an  uncontrollable  sacrifice  for  new  beginnings  and  nourishment.”

at  the  beginning  of  her  360th  year  on  this  planet,  the  mountain  goes  through  the  biggest  eruption  she  has  seen  so  far  in  her  lifetime.  the  devastation  leads  to  the  loss  of  some  of  her  sisters  and  her  mother,  the  nymph  struggling  with  picking  up  the  responsibilities  they’d  left  behind  to  soothe  the  land  and  the  emotions  of  loss  that  she  hadn’t  experienced  before.  the  aftermath  led  to  the  nymph  to  flee  from  her  destroyed  home,  feeling  not  only  grief  from  the  disappearance  of  her  sisters  and  mother,  but  also  anger  and  fear  towards  the  mountain  that  had  destroyed  all  she  had  cared  for  (  she’s  still  just  a  baby  !  )  

the  town  of  portum  calls  to  her  in  a  whisper  of  the  wind  as  she  leaps  across  grasslands  and  mountain  ranges,  promises  of  sanctuary  and  new  beginnings  —  a  new  home.  she  cautiously  steps  into  its  forest line  and  dense  fog  in  the  year  of  1881.  a  certain  mountainside  and  grove  calls  for  her  —  it’s  not  exactly  like  what  was  her  home  before  the  eruption,  but  she  makes  herself  right  at  home  before  she  explores  outside  her  home  range.  it  takes  the  nymph  decades  to  eventually  step  into  town,  with  enough  encouragement  from  the  seldom  -  few  interactions  with  kind  (  and  some  intimidating  )  supernatural  beings  and  instinctive  curiosity  of  the  nymph’s  nature  to  explore.  

the  nymph  eases  into  civilization,  taking  all  the  time  she  needs  to  balance  her  responsibilities  as  a  nymph  and  indulge  in  new  experiences  being  in  a  community  of  people  unlike  her.  when  she  didn’t  know  what  her  name  was  when  someone  had  asked,  she  beelined  to  the  nearest  library  to  pore  over  books  of  names  and  their  meanings.  the  nymph  chooses  yvonne  —  it  is  derived  from  the  french  word  of  yew  tree  …  ​​the  yew  tree  represents  longevity,  rebirth,  and  resilience

on  the  cusp  of  her  100th  year  of  residency  in  portum  (  and  on  her  birthday  ),  a  catastrophe  occurs  right  before  her  very  eyes  on  a  color  tv  at  rosie’s  diner.  for  months  news  anchors  reported  on  the  mountain’s  earthquakes  and  visible  signs  of  an  eruption,  but  no  one  would’ve  guessed  the  magnitude  of  it.  her  volcano—her  patriarch—experiences  a  massive  collapse  from  its  eruption  that  destroys  its  summit,  magma  bursting  from  its  seams  and  creating  the  largest  debris  avalanche  in  recorded  history.  the  progress  yvonne  had  made  from  the  traumatic  events  that  led  her  to  the  magical  town  seemed  to  have  backtracked,  with  flashbacks  of  lost  sisters  and  destruction  of  fertile  land  —  a  heart  -  wrenching  feeling  that  she  knows  the  nymphs  of  her  homeland  are  experiencing  devastation  and  fear,  and  she  cannot  help.  a  patriarch  in  critical  condition,  sustaining  life-ending  injuries  and  nearly  unrecognizable.    

forty  -  five  years  have  passed  since  the  devastating  eruption,  almost  twenty  years  since  the  last  signs  of  life.  yvonne  has  gone  through  grief  once  more  and  has  moved  on  with  grace.  it  is  all  part  of  the  complex  intricacies  of  nature,  after  all,  and  she  has  new  responsibilities  in  portum.  yvonne  has  the  pines  and  oaks  that  blanket  the  mountainsides  she  resides  in  (  just  as  beautiful  and  impressive  in  size  as  the  mountains  in  her  birthplace  )  to  look  over  ;  she  has  her  new  life  amongst  people  of  all  kinds  —  friends,  hobbies,  passions,  causing  mischief.

yvonne  has  been  an  employee  at  madam  duala’s  for  quite  some  time,  feeling  right  at  home  with  the  dried  herbs  and  natural  elements  that  create  medicines  and  magical  items.  a  part  of  her  magic  she  never  knew  she  could  use,  crafting  soothing  balms  and  enchantments.  she  also  is  a  talented  ceramist,  creating  things  from  mugs,  bowls,  vases,  to  tea  kettles.  it  is  natural  to  her  —  manipulating  earthy  -  clay  effortlessly  on  a  potter’s  wheel  to  create  works  of  art.

she  loves  listening  to  calm  classical  and  jazz  music  !  catch  her  with  a  little  stereo  cd  -  player  propped  on  a  fallen  log,  mimicking  the  ballerinas  and  jazz  dancers  she  has  watched  

she  sells  her  pottery  at  madam  duala’s  but  also  through  the  internet  !  thanks  to  the  magic  of  portum,  her  sender’s  address  is  disclosed  to  her  customers  outside  the  sanctuary  

yvonne  is  also  recently  become  a  pesctarian.  she  has  been  a  vegan  for  quite  some  time  but  has  become  curious  of  other  cuisines.  eventually  her  curiosity  will  get  the  best  of  her  and  can’t  resist  to  try  a  chicken  nugget
