Little Brown Friend
This is something I have been meaning to get out of my chest. I admit America is so much better, but it has never been the best.
Growing up as an immigrant there’s something I’ll never miss. Those painful experiences of prejudice.
People give the glance like I am trying to ask for their acceptance. I AM NOT. I am a proud Filipino immigrant. Freedom and peace is all I want.
When I came in America I automatically felt as an outsider. I was trapped and kept inside my language barrier. What happen to not having any fear? I thought I was welcome here?
It just don’t make any sense. Why are they so threatened? Why are they raising so much defense? Even trying to create an immense wall or a fence.
They see me so different. All because of the illusions they create. Their tense body gestures and judgy eyes are not even the part that makes you want to hate. It’s those feelings they give that makes you want to assimilate!
This is an immigrant’s quest. To struggle in search of belonging. Continuously searching for the common ground. On the land that is so renowned. Where all are “free” and "able" to sleep and sound.
I wish it was that easy. But this is the reality. I am a minority. That is my identity. It will always be hard to succumb to inferiority. But never will I give in to Manifest Destiny.
