Truth is, kids are really good at âfeeling thingsâ; adults have just had more practice turning feelings into ulcers.

In a hedonistic society, every deviation from the norm is severely criticized.
Reading was then, and remained until the early twentieth century, a more social activity than it is now. Women would read to a feminine family group, while their auditors worked at embroidery or the like. And communication might be kept up at a distance, with books given as presents and containing poems (âlines written on a blank leafâ and so on).

Glitching âBy Handâ: How to Break Media is a workshop taught by Fall 2017 New Media Fellow Alan Page, intended for people who are both new to glitch art and curious about how to start. The class will teach about the unpredictable, experimental, and sometimes tedious nature of glitch art and why iterations are important. From there, the class will experiment with various softwares and apps without using the defaults, and find ways to break and intentionally/unconventionally recreate and manipulate media.
The big breakthrough will come when tech executives clearly acknowledge the central truth: Their technologies are extremely useful for the tasks and pleasures that require shallower forms of consciousness, but they often crowd out and destroy the deeper forms of consciousness people need to thrive.

PORTLAND
During 2014â15, a psychologist from Stanford University called Kari Leibowitz spent ten months in Tromsø trying to figure out how people cope during the cold, dark winters. Together with Vittersø, she devised a âwinter mindset questionnaireâ to assess peopleâs attitudes to winter in Tromsø, Svalbard, and the Oslo area. The farther north they went, the more positive peopleâs mindsets towards winter were, she tells me. âIn the south, people didnât like winter nearly as much. But across the board, liking winter was associated with greater life satisfaction and being willing to undertake challenges that lead to greater personal growth.â It sounds dismissively simple, but adopting a more positive attitude really might help to ward off the winter blues. Kelly Rohan recently published a clinical trial comparing cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to light therapy in the treatment of SAD and found them comparable during the first year of treatment. CBT involves learning to identify patterns and errors in oneâs way of thinking and challenging them. In the case of SAD, that could be rephrasing thoughts such as âI hate winterâ to âI prefer summer to winter,' or âI canât do anything in winterâ to âItâs harder for me to do things in winter, but if I plan and put in effort I can.' It also involves finding activities that a person is willing to do in winter, to pull them out of hibernation mode. âI donât argue that there isnât a strong physiological component to seasonal depression, which is tied to the light dark cycle,â says Rohan. âBut I do argue that the person has some control over how they respond to and cope with that. You can change your thinking and behaviour to feel a bit better at this time of year.â

Journal writing can be a good way to vent feelings, and learn about yourself at the same time. It is ok to cover the pages of your journal with âFUCK FUCK FUCK I HATE THIS!â in bright red ink, if this feels good to you, we recommend that you get an extra-large journal.

Zuckerberg likes to fashion himself as the Great Facilitator: heâs just there to help the rest of us humans achieve our innate potential for constant, constructive communication. Itâs a disingenuously naĂŻve view of human nature and a cannily passive self-portrayal, one that allows him to avoid taking more responsibility for the harm that his invention does along with the good.
