i got to watch a few bee hives be opened up today, which was pretty exciting and might have been more thrilling if it was dry out. these are the hives at my alma mater, and i was the one hired to paint them, so it’s pretty cool to see them occupied.

the moon tonight
a small snail friend spotted in the moss.
the fern room at the garfield park conservatory is, by far, my favorite room there. compared to the other rooms, it has a unique topography, displaying the ferns on little fake rocky outcroppings around a pond, rather than having everything flat on a single floor level. this was done to simulate how the region may have looked in the prehistoric era.
it looks pretty cool at night, if i do say so myself.
no, the greenhouse photos aren’t over yet.

palm house at Garfield Park Conservatory, part II. they had done a cute little design in their pond for the blooming of the corpse flower, too.

say hello to Persephone, the corpseflower that bloomed last night at the Garfield Park Conservatory.
as someone who works with animal specimens and is used to the smell of meat that’s gone a bit... off... i have to say that it didn’t smell like rotting flesh to my nose. instead, the smell was more like warm garbage, rotting vegetation, and sweat.
still--an even larger bloom than the last corpseflower i went to see, and much fresher since we got there only a couple hours after it finished opening!
(plus, the entire conservatory was open until midnight)
it’s not quite a christmas miracle, but it is pretty lucky. i’ve been deer-spotting for a while now and I’ve managed to come up with some interesting shots.
oh, and one coyote.
an attempt was made.

it’s late at night so i will very quietly post this photo of a dead animal i found on my walk today.
looking at it, i’m pretty sure this is a mink? i’ve never seen any around here before so it struck me as odd, but some googling supports the idea that it might have been an american mink.
can anyone confirm?
deer spotting. I’m just frustrated that I only caught the male through the car window.
