From January 29 to February 24, Sho Sugita, translator of Japanese Futurist Hirato Renkichi’s collected poems, Spiral Staircase, will tour the US, celebrating the book’s publication with a string of readings from Seattle to NY.

Once called “the Marinetti of Japan,” Hirato Renkichi produced a unique brand of Futurism from the late 1910s and early 1920s through poetry, criticism, and guerrilla performance. Contributing to the earliest productions of Japanese avant-garde poetry, his aggressive experimentation with speed, spatialization, and performability would later influence what became a lively community of Dadaist and Surrealist writers in pre-war Japan.

The second issue of The Equalizer contains a few translations of Kawaji Ryuko. I worked on these translations a while ago as a side project, but hopefully it will be something that I will get back into in the near future. Check out Michael Schiavo's interview on PSA's website, which includes links to both issues of the journal.
Renkichi's futurist poetry manifestos were published in coterie journals between 1916 and 1922, when, poor and suffering from tuberculosis, he died at the age of 29, leaving behind his common-law wife...
There are 6 translations of Hirato Renkichi in Lana Turner (issue 7). It's a massive issue on the Avant-Garde, and I'm excited that some of my translations of Hirato Renkichi are archived alongside an essay by Edoardo Sanguineti on Futurism and Surrealism.

Hirato Renkichi was “the only self-proclaimed futurist poet in Japan”
Although I'm very grateful for Professor Gennifer Weisenfeld's extensive research on the Japanese avant-garde, the above statement from Mavo: Japanese Artists and the Avant-garde, 1905-1931 is a bit misleading. For example, Kanbara Tai explicitly labeled his poems "Futurist." There were a few online ephemera that either cited or paraphrased the above quote, so I thought I should make a quick post to suggest otherwise.
Though not a self-proclaimed Futurist, Yosano Hiroshi showed great interest in Futurism while introducing some of Marinetti's works in his poetry anthology. Browsing through coterie journals like Taimatsu (Torchlight), or in later years Shi to shiron (Poetry and Poetics), one could see the influence of Futurism that Kanbara Tai had placed on the lively poetry community in Tokyo. On a more peripheral sense, Kouchi Nobuko discusses the impact of Futurism on Japanese poets in her recent book Miraiha to nihon no shijintachi (Futurism and Japanese Poets). Though it is true that "self-proclaimed futurists" were rare in print, there was a community of poets in Japan that both felt and were a part of the international literary avant-garde.
